Rival Soccer Fans Clash After Pre-season Friendly
RIVAL soccer fans clashed after a pre-season derby game between Cardiff City and Newport County last night, smashing shop and house windows and fighting in the streets. Bottles and other missiles were thrown in a series of disturbances involving scores of supporters in and around Newport Stadium, Spytty Park, where Cardiff City FC beat Newport County FC 1-0 in the friendly. Officer reinforcements from Gwent and South Wales police forces and British Transport Police were called in to quell violence that flared during and after the game, resulting in seven arrests for public-order offences. No one was thought to have been injured. The seven who were arrested - from Cardiff, Rhondda and Newport - were being held in custody at Newport Central police station early this morning. After the disturbances, a large contingent of Cardiff supporters were dispatched on trains bound for the capital, where they dispersed peacefully. Sergeant Steve Dawkins, of British Transport Police, who escorted the Cardiff fans back from Newport, said, “It began during the match. There was a hard-core group of around 40 to 50 Cardiff City fans causing trouble. It was a bit hairy, bottles smashing at your feet. We did our best to contain them and keep them separated.” Wallace Brown, director of Newport County FC, said last night, “This is obviously something that shouldn’t happen, but within the confines of the ground there did not appear to be any extensive problem. “We had a crowd of 1,000 for the game and everyone enjoyed it.” Inspector John Drinkwater, of Gwent Police control room, said the full extent of the damage was being assessed by officers. _________________

12 arrests as Town lose to Reading
A dozen football fans were arrested as Swindon Town lost 2-0 to Reading.
Witnesses reported that up to 60 Swindon fans were involved in fights and scuffles with their Reading opposite numbers during and after Saturday's clash. Officers from Thames Valley Police escorted many Swindon fans from Reading station to the Madejski Stadium.
A police spokesman confirmed that 12 fans had been arrested over alleged public order offences and acts breaking laws on conduct in football grounds. He also said a number of buses transporting fans had their windows broken. No further details including whether those involved came from Swindon or Reading were available.
Skirmishes were visible behind the Swindon goal from three minutes after kick-off, and spilled into the surrounding area afterwards. One Swindon fan who witnessed some of the trouble was Tony Norris, who was with family and friends.
Mr Norris, 37, from Nine Elms, said violence seemed to flare early in the match, when a group of Swindon fans were put into a part of the stadium which contained Reading supporters. He added: One or two people got hostile to one another. But the one guy who seemed to be the cause of the trouble was the one the police didn't arrest they arrested a couple of others.

| Halifax: Club faces action after referee attack - 21/08/2000
Source: http://www.halifaxcourier.co.uk
HALIFAX Town face action from the football authorities after a supporter ran from the crowd and struck the referee during Saturday s home game with Lincoln City. HALIFAX Town face action from the football authorities after a supporter ran from the crowd and struck the referee during Saturday s home game with Lincoln City.Referee George Cain was back on the halfway line moments after the visitors had levelled the scores when the man, who raced from the north stand, approached him. Several Lincoln players came to the official s aid and the invader was escorted off the field by a policeman. Mr Cain, from Seaforth, Merseyside, is certain to include the incident in his routine report of the match to the Football Association and that could spell trouble for the Shaymen. Halifax Town director Ray Crabtree was quick to condemn the fan s actions promising that he would be banned for life. The fan will be banned from the ground sine die, said Mr Crabtree. And anyone else who does that sort of thing in the future will receive exactly the same treatment. The club will support the police in whatever action they decide to take against him. The club are likely to hold a review of stewarding procedures after the man ran a full 60 yards to get to the referee. We will be meeting with the people concerned with steward management, said Mr Crabtree. There is an on-going programme of training in the opening weeks of the season and this incident will be covered in that. Mr Crabtree said he was aware of the implications of the fan s actions to the club, adding that he was hugely disappointed by the whole incident. This kind of incident damages the club s reputation. We are spending a lot of money to ensure professional standards and that was not the standard of stewarding we expect. The fan was arrested by an officer from Lincolnshire Police who had been helping counterparts from Halifax at the game. He was charged with affray and encroachment onto the pitch and will appear before Calderdale magistrates at a later date. Magistrates have the power to ban him from all football grounds in the country. Police ranked the match in the lowest category A - where no trouble was expected.

| Halifax - Rochdale: Security - 24/08/2000
Source: http://www.halifaxcourier.co.uk
80 OFFICERS READY FOR SHAY DUTY
A LARGE police presence is expected when Rochdale fans return to the Shay for the first time since trouble marred last season s match between the two teams. More than 80 officers will be on duty inside and outside the ground during the third division derby on bank holiday Monday. Sixteen people were arrested after trouble broke out in the Skircoat stand shortly after kick-off on February 12. Four Halifax fans and eight Rochdale fans were later prosecuted for their part in the clashes. Police had ranked that match as the lowest risk-grade, category A, but 40 Rochdale fans got into the section reserved for Halifax fans in an organised attempt to cause trouble. Only stewards were on duty inside the ground on the day. But Monday smatch will be classed as the highest risk, category C, with officers on the turnstiles to ensure the crowd remains segregated. PC Chris Lund, football intelligence officer for Halifax police, said: It is fair to say the vast majority of supporters want to just watch the football. Up until last season there had been no real trouble at the fixture, but it is just a case of whether they want to get back at each other. PC Lund stressed that officers will be helped by police intelligence on hooligans. Two Rochdale officers will also be at the game to spot potential trouble makers. Licensees will be linked to police andto each other through the Pubwatch radio scheme.
