Police were scrambled to a motorway service station after reports of fighting between rival football fans on Boxing Day night.

Trouble is said to have flared between Wigan and Stoke City supporters - despite the pair not actually playing each other.

Earlier in the day Stoke lost at Birmingham whilst Wigan went down 2-0 at nearby West Brom.

And the two groups of fans are said to have clashed whilst both at services on the M6 on the way home from the Midlands.

There were reports on social media of the groups, some of whom were said to be in fancy dress, throwing bins at each other's buses.

Another fan who claimed to be there said it was "absolute scenes" as fellow travellers watched on.

Staffordshire Police said they were called to reports of 'disorder' at Hilton Park services between junctions 11 and 10a of the motorway.

A photo from the service station showed a number of police cars parked up in the coach park.

Varese fan dies, four Napoli supporters stabbed and alleged racist chanting at Serie A match

Daniele Belardinelli aka "Dede" 35-year-old Varese supporter and member of the Blood and Honour group, was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery after being hit by a van but later died, while in a separate incident, four Napoli fans were stabbed around an hour before the game as ultras from Inter and Napoli clashed.

One of the Napoli fans needed hospital treatment for wounds to the abdomen and two Inter ultras have been arrested in connection to the attack.

The atmosphere during the match remained hostile, with Napoli manager Carlo Ancelotti demanding the game to be suspended because of alleged racist chanting.

Ancelotti said post-match: "There was an abnormal atmosphere, we asked for the suspension of the match and three times they made an announcement over the PA.

"The player's (Kalidou Koulibaly) nerves were shaken, he was nervous.

"Koulibaly is always well behaved and a professional, and doesn't often let himself go. But the chanting went on for the entire match.

"We asked three times to do something but it just went on. The solution? The match can be stopped but they need to have an idea when.

Inter Milan will play two home league games behind closed doors following the alleged racist abuse of Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly on Wednesday.



The Italian side will also play a third match at the San Siro without opening the 'curva' section of the ground, popular with fans known as 'ultras'.

Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti said he asked for the match to be suspended three times and that Koulibaly was targeted in the 1-0 defeat.

Inter are deciding whether to appeal.

A supporter who was with a group of Inter Milan fans died after being knocked down by a van amid violence before the match in Milan.

Four Napoli fans were hurt and one of them was stabbed, police said.

Inter's next three home league games are against Sassuolo on 19 January, Bologna on 3 February and Sampdoria on 17 February.

In addition to the punishment for Inter, Serie A have given Koulibaly a two-match ban after the Senegal international was sent off.

Police launch hunt to find fans after Manchester United supporter assaulted at Cardiff City game

Police are investigating an incident where a Manchester United fan was left with facial injuries after an incident inside Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday.

Shocking footage emerged at the weekend of a United fan being thrown out of the Cardiff City end of the stadium, with the video showing stewards removing the supporter, wearing a red coat, who had incurred the wrath of home fans.

Shouts of "just fuck off" and general abuse being hurled in the direction of the fan as he's being marched out can be heard.

A second video later emerged, which appeared to be filmed on the concourse at the Canton End, seemed to show a continuation of the same incident.

The supporter is escorted to a fire door by what looks to be a member of security as Cardiff fans continue abuse heard in the previous video.

Shortly before he is kicked out of the stadium, the man leading him out has to physically stand in between the United fan and a group of what appear to be Cardiff supporters.

At one point, a fan appears to throw beer at him as he leaves through the door.

Now, police have confirmed they are investigating an assault after a 21-year-old man suffered facial injuries.

A South Wales Police spokeswoman said: "We are investigating an assault in the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday evening.

"A 21-year-old man from Ely , Cardiff, suffered facial injuries and officers are working with the club to identify those responsible.

A Cardiff City spokesman at the weekend: "We removed the supporter for his own safety and it was obviously a very difficult situation to deal with.

"The size of Manchester United's fanbase and the game mean supporters can acquire tickets from all different sources, but our stewards dealt with it in a swift and efficient manner."

A total of seven away fans were believed to be ejected after being discovered in home supporters' areas.

Yesterday, during the fight between Inter and Napoli ultras, a fan of the home side was killed after being hit by a van. La Gazzetta Dello Sport have published a long article about the man, whose identity was revealed earlier today.

Everyone called him "Dede". He was one of the leaders of Varese’s supporters. The red and white fans have always been twinned with Inter. Daniele Belardinelli, 35-years-old, was the point of reference for the ultras of Varese.

In 1998, the movement Blood & Honor was born. Nine years after the foundation, he was already the leader of this group that, on 11 November 2007, protested against the police outside the Franco Ossola stadium, at the end of the Serie C2 Varese-Lumezzane match.



The ultras, led by Belardinelli, didn't want the game to be played to give a strong signal after the murder of Lazio supporter Gabriele Sandri, which occurred on the morning of the same day. The Blood & Honor had asked Sean Sogliano, at the time sporting director of Varese, not to go ahead with the match.

The tension was not lacking because Belardinelli hit the manager with a slap in the face. For this action, at the conclusion of investigations conducted by the Anti-Crime Division of the Varese Police Headquarters, Belardinelli received a 5-year Daspo (football ban).

It was not the only episode in which Dede was involved. In 2012 he had received another Daspo from the Varese Police Commissioner for five years, since he was the protagonist of the clashes during a friendly match between Como and Inter, which ended with two hours of urban warfare.

Married and father of two children, in Varese he was also known for his successes with the Fight Academy of Morazzone. Belardinelli was a partner in a flooring and tiling company based in the Cantone of Ticino.

"He loved football, but we did not talk about it because I support Juventus and he supported Inter. I do not know what to say, he was a cheerful man," said one of Daniele Belardinelli's uncles.

"We often used to meet because we both worked in constructions - the uncle continued - I do not know what happened, I heard the news from TV," he concluded.

Celtic team bus pelted with smoke bombs as huge police presence in place for Old Firm match at Ibrox

A huge police presence has been put in place at Ibrox ahead of the second Old Firm derby of the season.

Cops from Police Scotland have set up a steel cordon to keep both sets of fans apart before kick-off at 12.30pm.

Officers on horse back were also in attendance outside the Govan stadium as the Celtic team bus arrived.

As the Celtic team bus arrived prior to the game it was pelted with smoke bombs as police guided the vehicle to the entrance.

Police were seen filming fans as the tension outside the stadium heated up.

The heavy police presence comes after Rangers slashed Celtic's ticket allocation for the marquee match to around 800 briefs.

Previously Celtic supporters were given the entire Broomloan end which meant around 7000 could attend the game.

Celtic reacted to the cut in allocation by Rangers and slashed tickets given out to Gers fans.

Peter Lawwell, Celtic chief executive, revealed at the Hoops' AGM that the club were considering rejecting their tickets over safety fears.

A bus carrying Bologna fans was left in ruins after being attacked by Bologna ultras.

The vehicle was taking a number of Toro fans to Rome for a Serie A game against Lazio at the Stadio Olimpico.

A group of rival Bologna fans were travelling to Naples, but decided to attack the bus with missiles at the Chianti motorway services in Tuscany.

Early reports from Italy suggest no fans have been injured.

A Torino fan on the bus told Corriere Torino: “We were going by bus, we stopped at the first motorway after Florence to have a coffee.

“We did not realize, at least not me, that behind us we had just stopped a coach of Bologna fans, who were going to Naples.

“Suddenly we heard dull hits, we were throwing ourselves against everything, especially stones and stones, I do not know where they got them.

“We saw the back window of our bus shatter, the police arrived shortly after, they escaped, I do not know who they were.”

Fans who 'threw missiles and flares' during Rochdale Football Club's clash with Bradford City now face banning orders, club bosses have warned.

Trouble was sparked during the match on Saturday after Bradford scored their first goal and home and away fans began to hurl insults, followed by flares and other objects, across Spotland Stadium.


Stewards had to intervene during the Sky Bet League One game, which was attended by around 5,700 fans.

Bradford City have now joined Rochdale chiefs in condemning the actions of a 'small minority' of fans from both clubs alleged to have been behind the incident.

Richard Partington, Rochdale Observer Sports Editor, who was covering the match, described 'heated discussions' between around 30 Bradford fans and up to 18 Rochdale supporters.

He said: "It was around 3.20pm after the first goal that I saw the first flares being thrown.

"The second time Bradford scored more flares were let off, it was darker then and more noticeable.

"Then there were things being thrown in both directions. I don't think there was a police presence at the match so it was dealt with by stewards."

With an attendance of 5,673, the stadium was much busier than usual.

In a statement released on Sunday, Rochdale club bosses vowed to investigate the shocking behaviour - and ban those responsible from future matches.

Describing the incident as 'unacceptable', they said the behaviour had 'interrupted the competitive but happy nature of supporters who turned out to back their team in an impeccable manner'.

They added: "The throwing of dangerous pyrotechnic flares and other missiles will not be tolerated.

"Both clubs have a zero-tolerance stance on any irresponsible action that places the safety of spectators at risk, and may also harm the excellent reputation of the vast majority of supporters.

"Investigations by Dale and the Bantams have already started, and those found to have been involved in such incidents will be issued with banning orders.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank the vast majority of supporters from both clubs who behaved impeccably.

"We will do our utmost to ensure incidents like this do not happen again."

The three Inter ultras arrested will remain in prison after police described a “military-style ambush” of visiting Napoli supporters.

Although Inter fan Daniele Belardinelli was run over and killed by a vehicle during the clashes, it is alleged he was part of the group who laid a trap for the Napoli ultras ahead of the match on Boxing Day.

A statement from the authorities in Milan explained the three fans under arrest, Francesco Baj, Simone Tira and Luca Da Ros, have been denied bail.

This is because the attack was “a military-style ambush operation, pre-ordained and prepared at some distance from the stadium.

“These clashes were among the most brutal expressions of a gang-style subculture that used the techniques of clashes between political factions rather than sporting events.”

The three fans were denied bail, because only Da Ros “showed he was prepared to reconstruct what happened and was aware of the gravity of the events.”

It is believed that Inter ultras were joined by hooligans from Varese and Nice, who are twinned with the Nerazzurri.

Marco Piovella suspected of planning Napoli fan ambush

An Inter Milan ultra leader was arrested Monday in the death of another of the club's ultra leaders in scuffles ahead of the 1-0 win over Napoli on Boxing Day.
   Marco Piovella, 34, nicknamed 'Il Rosso' (Red), is one of the heads of the Boys S.A.N. ultra group and has for years orchestrated their pre-match displays of banners.
   He is believed to be the brainchild behind the pre-match ambush of Napoli supporters in which Daniele Belardinelli was run over by an SUV.
   Prosecutors said Piovella "has the power to influence fans and he may re-offend".
   They described him as "dangerous and reticent". Belardinelli, 39, another far-right ultra leader from Inter's twinned Serie D club Varese, was run over while Inter fans armed with hammers, sickles and iron bars attacked Napoli vans and coaches.
   The violence spurred a hooliganism row which also concerned monkey chants at Napoli's Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly.
   Italy's sporting judge closed the San Siro for the next two Inter games, and the ultras' curva for a further one.
   Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said closing stadiums was "the wrong answer".
   Napoli coach Carlo Ancelotti said teams should take it upon themselves to suspend play after racist chants, a suggestion supported by many other Serie A bosses.
