England : Four Everton FC fans sue police after claiming they were "maliciously" prosecuted over crowd trouble at Arsenal - 13/05/2014

Source : http://www.dailypost.co.uk

Trouble broke out at the Emirates after Toffees fans subjected to 'unpleasant behaviour' from home supporters

Four Everton fans are suing police after claiming they were "maliciously" prosecuted after crowd trouble broke out during a Premier League match.

Blues supporters, Christopher Dutton, 25, Alex Ramsden, 34, and twins Jamie and John Martin, 35, were sat close to a segregation barrier when tensions boiled over between rival fans at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium October 2008.

They were variously arrested for alleged police obstruction, violent disorder, affray and being drunk in a football ground - but later cleared of all charges by magistrates.

They have now launched a bid for compensation from the Met police, insisting they were victims of false imprisonment, assault and malicious prosecution.

The force denies all those claims, saying there were reasonable grounds for arresting the men and enough evidence to charge them.

Opening the case for the Evertonians at London's Royal Courts of Justice, Sarah Hemingway claimed they were subjected to "unreasonable force" and "fabricated and elaborated" evidence.

She said the four had travelled to the capital from Liverpool on an Everton club coach and enjoyed no more than three pints of lager each before the "low-risk" Premier League clash, which Arsenal won 3-1.

CCTV footage played to the court appeared to show cups and smaller items being lobbed by home supporters onto angry away fans in a lower tier of the 60,000 seater stadium's Clock End.

Miss Hemingway said: "Everton fans in the away stand were subjected to unpleasant behaviour by Arsenal fans, particularly those in the stand above them.

"The unpleasant behaviour included objects being thrown and dropped upon them and also spitting."

The barrister said trouble sparked after furious members of the Everton support moved towards a segregation barrier, which separated the fervent home and away supporters, and remonstrated with Arsenal stewards to act.

Amid troubled scenes, police were called in and the twins, Mr Ramsden and Mr Dutton, who were sat beside the barrier, were hauled over it and arrested, Miss Hemingway told the jury.

"They will say that they were in the wrong place at the wrong time in a situation that was created by poor stewarding and poor policing," she added.

The barrister said Jamie Martin, of Tyne Close, Kirkdale, was trying to push other Everton fans back when police dragged him over the barrier and arrested him.

His twin brother, of Ennerdale Drive, Netherton, "was struck several times by a police baton", including a blow to his head, before he was also detained, Miss Hemingway added.

Mr Ramsden, of Oxford House, Bootle, was among a group of Toffees when he too was dragged over the barrier, while Christopher Dutton, of Downing Road, Bootle, was hit on the thumb with a baton, then taken into custody, she said.

The four men were each taken to Holloway Police Station and held for between three and five hours before they were bailed.

John Martin was later charged with affray and being drunk in a designated football ground.

Jamie Martin was charged with violent disorder; Mr Ramsden was charged with affray and being drunk in a stadium, while Mr Dutton was accused of one count of obstructing police.

But they were each cleared of all charges after a trial in November 2009.

Miss Hemingway argued that the police employed "excessive and injustified force" in detaining the men and insisted their case should never have got to the criminal court.

"We say it was not reasonable to have prosecuted them for these offences in the first place, in light of the evidence against them," she said.

"The charges have been, we say, fabricated and elaborated in police witness statements that appear to state that the claimants were drunk, aggressive or violent - so much so that this amounted to criminal offences."

From the witness box, Mr Dutton, who was attending his first away match in London on the day, said of the criminal trial: "It just felt pointless. I shouldn't have had any charges against me."

He said the hearing had left him feeling "down" and observed of the evidence against him: "It just did not seem to add up."

Mr Dutton said there had been "banter" between rival fans in the first half but tensions ramped up after the break, when "cups, drink cans and bottles" were being thrown by Arsenal supporters above block 23.

"There were people complaining to the stewards [that] there was spitting and coins", Mr Dutton said, branding the behaviour by gunners supporters "unacceptable".

But when Everton fans complained to stewards along the segregation barrier where Mr Dutton was sat, they were told "to go back to their seats", he told the jury.

Mr Dutton said he was trying to stop Jamie Martin from being pulled over the barrier by stewards - "defending and protecting him" - but he had no idea police were present until officers hauled him into the gangway.

"I seen the police and they were just throwing batons," he explained, "they were just striking the batons on people and they just seemed to be random strikes."

He said he was left "in pain and shocked" when an officer's baton whacked his thumb.

Paul Stagg, for the Met, played the court a 45-minute CCTV excerpt from cameras inside the Emirates which showed the escalating tensions between the two sets of fans, stewards and police in the lead up to the incident.

He will argue that officers used completely reasonable force, had grounds both to arrest and charge the four Toffees and supplied entirely proper evidence against them, notwithstanding their subsequent acquittals.

If the Everton fans are successful in their claim, the jury will then be asked to decide the amount of damages they are due.

Cyprus : Fans banned from attending footie game for inciting violence - 16/05/2014

Source : http://cyprus-mail.com

Four football fans accused by police of inciting violence have been banned from attending a championship decider between AEL and APOEL in Limassol on Saturday, as the force geared up for the game with the highest risk of trouble this season.

Late on Thursday, police raided the two teams’ fan clubs in a bid to foil any plans to cause trouble but eventually went away empty handed.

Four people were contacted by the police on Friday and were asked not to set foot in the stadium, or face a fine and possibly prosecution.

Police contacted the fans via mail, claiming that they had “credible information that they were inciting hatred and violence.”

While the police letter makes no mention on why these fans were singled out, one of them told news outlet themaonline that he had posted a picture on Facebook showing AEL fans holding flares.

The police actions are part of police measures ahead of the final game of the season that would also decide the champion.

Clashes between the two teams’ fans in Nicosia in April saw several people injured, one seriously.

Fans attending Saturday’s derby will have to present identification or else face being turned away, police said on Friday.

The ID number must also be written on the back of their tickets so they can be matched.

Police stressed that fans without ID cards will not be allowed in the stadium, despite having purchased a ticket.

The gates at Tsireion stadium, AEL’s home ground, will open at 2:30 pm and the game will start at 5:00 pm.

Police urged fans to show up as early as possible to avoid unnecessary delays.

Around 7,400 tickets – 5,000 will go to AEL — have been issued for the game.

Over 700 police officers are expected to be deployed — 400 inside and the immediate area outside, while 300 will tasked with directing traffic, manning roadblocks and monitoring the fans outside.

“We are using every tool at our disposal. More staff, more checks, everything. We want to make sure that law-abiding fans enjoy the game without feeling threatened by hooligans,” a senior police officer told the Cyprus Mail.

Both teams agreed with the police on how their fans should travel to the stadium.

APOEL fans should use the western side of the stadium while AEL fans are required to approach from the eastern side.

Police will also be cutting -off the streets around the stadium.

The police warned that they will not allow entrance to anyone found carrying a flare or a firecracker. Entrance will also be denied to those carrying motorcycle helmets.

The police also raided both APOEL and AEL fan clubs late on Thursday, in an attempt to catch fans preparing to cause trouble red-handed. “We raided the fan clubs on information that some hooligans were trying to stir-up trouble. We didn’t find any evidence of wrong-doing so our officers vacated the premises without any arrests,” the senior officer said.

Russia : Zenit fan who punched Dynamo Moscow player arrested - 15/05/2014

Source : http://www.vancouversun.com

A Zenit St. Petersburg fan who punched Dynamo Moscow captain Vladimir Granat during a Russian Premier League game on Sunday has been arrested after handing himself in to police.

Dynamo were leading 4-2 in the 86th minute when a few hundred Zenit fans invaded the pitch and defender Granat was punched in the head, leaving him with a concussion.

The match was abandoned after the referee consulted with the match delegate.

Zenit fan Alexey Nesterov, 45, said he had tried to speak with Dynamo Moscow officials after travelling to the capital.

“Yesterday I went to Moscow and tried to talk with representatives of Dynamo and also Vladimir Granat,” Nesterov told reporters. “They said they did not want me to be present and they did not want to see me.

“The police were hunting for me like I was Chikatilo! (Andrei Chikatilo was a notorious Soviet serial killer).

"I want my case to be applied to the letter of the law.

"There was no fight, everything happened spontaneously, just like a street fight. It is not possible that I broke Granat’s jaw, or something like that,” Nesterov added. Zenit, who were leading the league standings going into Sunday, have been penalised with a 3-0 technical defeat, fined one million roubles ($28,500) and ordered to play two home games behind closed doors and another three with a section of the stadium closed where the team`s ultras sit.

England : Arrests over violence at Gateshead v Grimsby game- 16/05/2014

Source : http://www.shieldsgazette.com

POLICE today revealed they have arrested a total of 16 fans following the Gateshead v Grimsby Town conference play-off semi-final.

On the day of the match, Sunday, May 4, eight fans were arrested after disorder, and yesterday police arrested eight more.

Yesterday’s arrests include two 17-year-olds from South Shields, who were detained on suspicion of conspiracy to commit violent disorder.

Also arrested in connection with the same offence are four men from Gateshead, aged 19, 45, 46 and 49, a 33-year-old man from North Tyneside, and a 43-year-old from Newcastle.

They have all been released on bail pending further enquiries.

On the day of the match, five people from Gateshead were arrested.

* A 24-year-old man was arrested and subsequently charged with breaching condition of a football banning order.

* A 30-year-old man was charged with being drunk and disorderly.

* A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct and bailed.

* A 42-year-old man was given a fixed penalty notice for being drunk and disorderly.

* A 16-year-old youth was cautioned for possessing a class A drug.

Three men from Grimsby were also arrested.

One, aged 46, was charged with being drunk and disorderly, and two others were cautioned - a 45-year-old for being drunk and disorderly and an 18-year-old for possessing a class A drug.

Police are warning Gateshead fans travelling to Wembley for Sunday’s Skrill Premier play-off final, against Cambridge United, to make sure their behaviour does not cause problems in the capital.

Detective Inspector Andy Fairlamb said: “We want to make people aware that anyone found causing disorder at football matches in our area will be identified and dealt with.

“When we receive reports of problems linked to sporting or other events we will always seek to identify those responsible, and where possible take action to bring them before the courts.

“We are also liaising with our colleagues in London ahead of this important match for Gateshead to prevent any problems occurring.

“We know this is a big game for one of our local teams and we don’t want the bad behaviour of a few to mar what will be a great sporting day out for many true supporters.”

Cyprus : AEL - APOEL Nicosie - 17/05/2014

Ref calls off title decider as firecracker hurts APOEL defender

THE Cyprus football association KOP will decide who takes the championship title after referee Demetris Mashias suspended Saturday’s crucial game just six minutes into the second half when firecrackers, thrown by AEL fans, hurt an APOEL player and a doctor.

The suspension could dash all hopes for the Limassol side to win the title for the second time in three years, as it was just three points clear of the Nicosia side and needed a win to lift the crown. On the other hand, if APOEL wins the ruling, it could win the title and head confident into Wednesday’s Cup final at GSP in Nicosia against Ermis Aradhippou.

Brazilian defender Kaka and doctor Costas Schizas were hurt by a firecracker thrown from the AEL fans’ stands in Limassol’s Tsireion stadium in the 51st minute of the game, when the score was still at a nail-biting 0-0. They were put on stretchers and rushed to hospital. Three minutes earlier, fans from the APOEL stand had thrown other objects onto the field.

The record 500 police, brought in to prevent clashes among fans of the two clubs known for their violence, were moved in and after an hour’s deliberation, the referee and his assistants decided the game would be suspended.

The police said that fans were leaving rather peacefully, while it also announced that the main roads around the APOEL club in the capital would be closed to traffic, for fear of violent outbursts or celebrations by the rowdy fans.

Three points separated the two sides going into yesterday’s title decider with the Limassol club knowing that either a win or a draw would be enough to earn their second championship in three years.

APOEL went into the game knowing that only a win would be enough to give them their first back-to-back league titles since the 1948/49 campaign when they sealed three consecutive league wins.

The first half saw the home side defend efficiently, and their aim to contain an APOEL team which had no other option than to go for all three points worked well.

In a typically heated atmosphere for a game of such importance, the match saw tempers flare leading to more petty squabbles rather than clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities for either side.

Ultimately, the match was marred by an incident in which fans through objects onto the field, some of which hit players and staff, leading to the game being suspended with the score at 0-0.

APOEL entered the field with the best defence, having conceded just 25 goals in 36 matches, and the most fearsome attack, scoring 77 goals, but it remains to be seen as to whether they can retain their records.

While the title remains undecided, both APOEL and AEL will be in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League as the 2014/15 season will be the first to include two Cypriot clubs in the preliminary rounds of Europe’s elite competition.

KOP will have to decide whether the game will be awarded to either of the two teams or if the game will be continue from suspension time. Alternatively, there is also the possibility of the game being replayed from the start.

Osasuna - Real Betis - 18/05/2014

Source : http://www.theguardian.com

Fans injured at relegated Osasuna's game with Real Betis

Osasuna and Real Valladolid will join already relegated Real Betis in the Spanish second division next season after a nail-biting final day of action in La Liga was disrupted when a barrier collapsed at Osasuna.

The match in Pamplona was halted for around 30 minutes when the barrier tumbled to the ground following Osasuna's 12th-minute opening goal against Betis and fans spilled on to the pitch.

Around 60 fans were treated on site for minor complaints and 10 were taken to hospital but none suffered serious injury, according to the local Red Cross.

The Spanish professional league (LFP) decided there would be extended half-time breaks in the other three games involving relegation-threatened sides to allow the Osasuna-Betis match to catch up.

QPR - Wigan Athletic - Play-off - 09/05/2014

Source : http://www.london24.com

A shocking video of QPR fans punching, kicking and shoving stewards down the stairs during their Championship play-off match with Wigan has been released by police.

The Met are appealing for help in identifying five men they would like to speak to after violence erupted during the match at Loftus Road in west London.

It kicked off during the second half of the semi-final second leg between Queens Park Rangers and Wigan Athletic, which Harry Redknapp’s team won 2-1 in extra time, when stewards attempted to remove a man from the upper tier of the South Africa Road stand.

His fellow fans became aggressive towards staff, who were pushed down the steps of the stand and then repeatedly attacked.

Chief Superintendent Colin Morgan from Specialist Crime and Operations Public Order Branch said: “This incident started with some pushing and shoving at the top of the stand.

“It quickly turned nasty as a large group of supporters and stewards fell and were forced backwards down the steep stairway that separates the stands.

“It was made worse by some supporters who then chose to punch, push and kick at the stewards. It was pure luck that no one was badly hurt.

“We will deal robustly with those responsible for disorder, whether inside or outside football venues, and we will bring them to court.”

Six fans arrested during cup win celebrations

Police arrested six people on Wednesday when fan celebrations got out of hand after the football cup final between APOEL and Ermis in Nicosia.

Two of its officers were injured during the trouble, police said.

APOEL won their 20th cup after beating the Aradhippou side 2-0 at the GSP stadium.

The Nicosia team’s supporters celebrated the win outside their club but at around 11.30pm, when most people had left, some fans started throwing stones at the police who used tear gas to disperse them.

Six people were arrested, police said, adding to the four detained before the 7pm game for possession of firecrackers.

Cyprus : Tougher measures ahead for fan violence- 20/05/2014

Source : http://cyprus-mail.com

IN LIGHT of Saturday’s events, in which a football player was injured by a firecracker thrown from the stands and the title-deciding game abandoned, the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) has decided to strengthen its punitive measures against football clubs for their fans’ violent behaviour.

Following an extraordinary board meeting on Tuesday, the CFA said its disciplinary regulations will be amended for the following season to include a three-strike rule against football clubs when their fans bring ‘dangerous objects’ into the stands.
“For transferring dangerous objects into stadiums, three offences will trigger the closing of part of the club’s stands at their next home game,” the statement read.
“Any additional offence will trigger a ‘closed-doors’ match at the responsible team’s next home game in which entrance will only be allowed to pensioners and children under 12, escorted by their mothers,” it added.
The CFA has also introduced more stringent rules for throwing objects onto the pitch or at the opposing team’s fans. Each of these will immediately incur a ‘closed-doors’ match at the responsible team’s next home game with the same rules as above.
“Three such instances will incur a deduction of points, with the number of points deducted increasing with each additional offence,” the CFA warned.
The statement clarified that the term ‘dangerous objects’ will be clearly defined and incorporated into the association’s disciplinary regulations.
In addition to the above measures, the CFA proposed that the government imposes a ‘fan identification’ scheme for Nicosia’s GSP stadium, Larnaca’s Antonis Papadopoulos stadium and Limassol’s Tsireion.
“These schemes operate by the use of a fan card that is different for each club,” the CFA clarified.
Football’s governing body also proposed the immediate trial of offenders arrested for football violence, and the banning of hoods and masks in the stands.

Portuguese police detain 258 people over chaotic weekend

The Portuguese police force announced on Monday it detained 258 people over the weekend, with tens of thousands of Spanish football bans arriving in Portugal's capital Lisbon to watch the European Champions League final.

According to the PSP police force, 31 of these detentions were due to theft while 17 were due to drug trafficking. The police also seized five firearms and 2,400 doses of drugs.

The report also stated that 15 detentions were made of resistance and bullying of employees, 11 because of illegal possession of arms and eight due to domestic violence and 13 due to illegal gambling.

Real Madrid defeated Atletico de Madrid 4-1 in the 120-minute match on Sunday night at the Luz stadium in Lisbon amid cheers of over 60,000 fans, most of whom came from the neighboring Spain over the weekend. The Spanish club secured a record 10th title in the competition, 12 years after their ninth victory.

Paris St Germain have been called before UEFA's disciplinary commission over allegations of racism by their fans at last month's Champions League clash against Chelsea in Paris.

The allegations concern "racism, other discriminatory conduct and propaganda" during April 2's home leg of the quarter-final, according to the governing body. PSG won the match 3-1 but went on to lose the tie on away goals.

A UEFA statement released to Press Association Sport read: "Disciplinary proceedings have been opened against PSG on 16 May 2014 for alleged offences concerning 'racism, other discriminatory conduct and propaganda' at their UEFA Champions League quarter-final played against Chelsea in Paris.

"The UEFA control and disciplinary body will decide on the matter on 17 July 2014.

"We do not make any further comment until the official disciplinary decision is announced by end of July."

The match was preceded by clashes between rival supporters on the streets of Paris, with Chelsea fans reportedly chanting racist abuse and making Nazi salutes while a group of around 100 PSG ultras targeted travelling fans.

A report on the website of Paris newspaper Le Parisien on Tuesday evening indicated that a group of disabled Chelsea fans had filed a complaint after objects including chewing gum and a bottle were thrown at them during the game at the Parc des Princes.

UEFA's disciplinary regulations specify a minimum sanction of a partial stadium closure for a club found guilty of a first offence of racist abuse by their supporters.

Article 14 of the regulations also states: "A second offence is punished with one match played behind closed doors and a fine of 50,000 euros.

"Any subsequent offence is punished with more than one match behind closed doors, a stadium closure, the forfeiting of a match, the deduction of points or disqualification from the competition.

"If the circumstances of the case require it, the competent disciplinary body may impose additional disciplinary measures on the member association or club responsible, such as the playing of one or more matches behind closed doors, a stadium closure, the forfeiting of a match, the deduction of points or disqualification from the competition."

Ex-Hibs casuals fight Leeds fans in Benidorm - 29/05/2014

Source : http://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com

FORMER Hibs casuals on holiday in Benidorm to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Capital City Service (CCS) were attacked by hooligans linked with Leeds United outside a pub.

Around ten of the veterans – who were wearing T-shirts and hats emblazoned with ‘30 Years On Top’ – were left bloodied after being set upon by the rival firm at the Spanish resort’s Ibrox Bar.

Outnumbered three to one by the Leeds thugs – who were on a stag do and bumped into them by chance – the Hibs contingent were assaulted after their CCS clothing was spotted.

Aged from their 30s to 50s, the men were among up to 150 past and present CCS members who travelled to Benidorm to mark the anniversary of the hooligan firm, formed in 1984.

After the attack, around 70 of the CCS group spent several hours searching for the Leeds faction across Benidorm to exact revenge, but failed to find them.

Shocked holidaymakers described seeing police and ambulances swarming around the bar following the violence, which erupted on Friday night.

Most of the Hibs group had not been actively involved with CCS for a number of years.

Sources said they had travelled to the Costa Blanca on a “jolly” to watch the Champions League final on Saturday night between Real Madrid and Athletico Madrid.

Of the ten caught up in the brawl, it is believed most suffered minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment.

It is understood at least one Hibs fan was arrested following the melee, but that could not be confirmed by the Foreign Office or Spanish police.

A source said: “There was a very large group of Hibs fans who went to Benidorm to celebrate 30 years of the Capital City Service. It was essentially a bit of a jolly. Although there were current CCS members among them, most were older men with families and things. They weren’t looking for trouble on the holiday, but about ten of them happened into a bar where about 30 or so Leeds casuals were on a stag party.”

Another source said: “It was older Hibs guys who were attacked by this bigger gang of Leeds casuals. It looked like a bad one but they all scattered when the police arrived.”

Many of the Hibs group flew back to Edinburgh on Sunday to watch the Easter Road side relegated from the Premier League following the play-
off defeat to Hamilton on penalties.

A Benidorm holidaymaker, who witnessed the fighting, posted a message about the incident on Twitter. He wrote: “Hibs casuals caused mayhem outside the Ibrox Bar last night. Still police tape all over the pavement.” A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are aware of reports of an incident involving British nationals in Benidorm and we stand ready to provide consular assistance.”

Cyprus : Arrested football fan released on bail - 26/05/2014

Source : http://cyprus-mail.com

The 25-year-old man arrested in connection with the interruption of the championship match of AEL-APOEL last week was released on Monday, after posting €10,000 bail.

The man is to appear before the Limassol District Court on June 20, to face charges of igniting a flare while on the stadium stands, which led to the interruption of the game.

The 25-year-old AEL fan was the cause of the interruption of the crucial championship game, after he allegedly shot a cracker at the APOEL bench and injuring a player who has to be hospitalised.

Limassol police published photo of the alleged culprit, who appeared to be wearing a hoodie, sunglasses, and a bandana to cover his face. AEL’s club president Andreas Sofocleous had promised to pay €5,000 to anyone who gave information regarding the fan’s whereabouts.

Cyprus Football Federation (CFA) decided last week the game –that will decide the championship – be repeated on neutral grounds without fans. The decision angered APOEL fans, who argue that the according to CFA law the ruling should have favoured their team, since the referee in his report cites the cracker shot by AEL as the reason he interrupted the match.

APOEL fans are voicing their disagreement by staging a march in Nicosia on Tuesday. According to a press release issued by the team’s fan club, the fans demand that “justice is done” and that “CFA doesn’t equate the guilty with the innocent”.

The march will take place at 7.15pm at the Kolokassides roundabout.
