Mexican stadium closed after fans riot, 17 arrests - 23/03/2014
Source : http://www.reuters.com/
Guadalajara city authorities closed the Jalisco stadium on Sunday after fans clashed with police leaving close to 40 people injured and 17 arrested after the local derby.
Fans of the Guadalajara Chivas, who had earlier lit dozens of flares, fought a running battle with outnumbered police on the upper terraces of the stadium near the end of Saturday's 1-1 draw with bitter city rivals Atlas.
Television footage showed police helmets and truncheons flying through the air and officers pushed down the terraces by fans wearing red and white striped Guadalajara shirts.
"We're going to proceed according to the regulations. After revising the evidence we're going to close the building," Jesus Lomeli, general secretary of Guadalajara town hall, told reporters.
Lomeli said 17 people were arrested and media published photos of seals on the gates of the stadium in the city 530 km west of Mexico City with the word "Closed" on them.
"Eight policemen are injured, two of them seriously though out of danger. There are 30 civilians hurt, one of them gravely but out of danger. They are being treated at various hospitals," Lomeli said.
The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) expressed its support to Guadalajara city authorities in their search for the culprits.
"We reaffirm our commitment to a clean game inside and outside the grounds, the Federation will at all times support the investigation so as to identify and punish those responsible for such pitiful acts," a FMF statement said.
Guadalajara took an early lead through striker Aldo De Nigris but Paraguayan Jose Ortigoza equalized in the 72nd minute for home side Atlas.
The Chivas are seventh in the Clausura championship standings with 17 points from 12 matches and Atlas 12th with 14.
Leaders Cruz Azul were held to a 0-0 draw at title holders Leon, who had Mexico's veteran World Cup captain and former Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez sent off in the closing minutes for a second booking.
Cruz Azul have 29 points from their 12 matches, a four-point lead over second-placed Toluca who were looking to close the gap with a win at Atlante later on Sunday.
The top eight qualify for the knockout phase at the end of the 17-match league stage.

Bayern fans banned for bad behavior, club fined - 24/03/2014
Source : http://news.yahoo.com
UEFA has banned Bayern Munich fans from a section of the stadium for the next Champions League game against Manchester United because of discriminatory behavior of supporters.
A banner with the phrase "Gay Gunners" and a crude cartoon image of Arsenal player Mesut Ozil, who is German, was shown at the match against Arsenal in Munich. The English club's nickname is the Gunners.
The closure of one sector will come during the return leg of the Champions League quarterfinals against Manchester United on April 9.
A second banner with the slogans "Say No To Racism. Say Yes To Kosovo" was also displayed. Kosovo if a former province of Serbia whose proclamation of independence is disputed by Serbia.
UEFA fined Bayern 10,000 euros ($13,700) for displaying the "illicit banner."

Peruvian club fined for fans' monkey chants - 25/03/2014
Source : http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com
Peruvian club Real Garcilaso have been fined $12,000 after their fans insulted a Brazilian player with a chorus of monkey chants during a Libertadores Cup match last month.
The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) also warned the Cusco-based team that they would face a home ban in the event of a repetition of the incidents which happened in the match against Brazilian champions Cruzeiro. Real Garcilaso fans repeatedly insulted Cruzeiro substitute Tinga after the former Borussia Dortmund and Sporting player came on as a second-half substitute during the match in the Andean city of Huancayo. The monkey chants began when Tinga entered the field and could be clearly heard on the television broadcast echoing around the stadium every time he touched the ball. The episode prompted condemnation from Brazil President Dilma Rousseff, who described the insults as "lamentable", and her Peru counterpart Ollanta Humala. "Conmebol reiterates its commitment to fight any form of discrimination and racist acts in its competitions," said the governing body of South American football. It added that referees and match delegates would be encouraged to report further incidents.

Brazilian club fined $21,000 for fans' racism - 25/03/2014
Source : http://news.yahoo.com
A sports tribunal has fined Brazilian club Mogi Mirim $21,000 because its fans racially abused an opposing player in a Sao Paulo state championship match this month.
The tribunal issued the fine after fans allegedly called Santos midfielder Arouca a "monkey" while he was being interviewed after a March 6 match. Fans also reportedly told the former Brazil midfielder to go and look for an African team to play for.
Mogi Mirim, whose president is former Brazil star Rivaldo, said it will appeal because it did everything possible to help authorities solve the case.
Nobody was arrested, but the team's stadium will remain closed pending the appeal.

Swedish league match abandoned after death of Djurgarden fan in assault
• Supporter of Stockholm club died from head injuries, police say • Season-opener with Helsingborg ended after 42 minutes
A supporter of Stockholm club Djurgarden has died from head injuries sustained in an assault before his team's opening Swedish league match at Helsingborg, police said on Sunday, with the match subsequently abandoned before halftime.
"I can confirm that a person has died at Helsingborg Hospital. He was brought there after an incident at Karntrappan in central Helsingborg," police spokesperson Ewa-Gun Westford told website Fotbollskanalen.
The incident occurred half an hour before kick-off on the opening weekend of the Swedish league. Rumours of the 40-year-old's death spread through the terraces 40 minutes into the match, prompting Djurgarden fans to storm on to the pitch. Referee Martin Hansson took the players off in the 42nd minute and a tense standoff between police, security staff and fans ensued.
A decision was taken to abandon the game with the score tied at 1-1, shortly before the police confirmed the man had died.
Football in Sweden has long been plagued by violent incidents, with several matches being abandoned in recent years due to pitch invasions and fireworks being thrown on to the field.

Napoli fine angers fans - 29/03/2014
Source : http://www.southwales-eveningpost.co.uk
THE fine handed down to Napoli after hundreds of Swans supporters missed a chunk of the Europa League clash has been condemned as a “token” punishment.
The Italian club has been fined £21,500 by Uefa after nearly 700 fans missed the first 20 minutes of the match at Stadio San Paolo.
The Jack Army had been advised to avoid public transport and instead use police escorted buses because of concerns about potential clashes with Napoli supporters, and delays meant they missed the Jonathan de Guzman goal in a match Swansea eventually lost 3-1.
Swans fan, Guto Llewelyn, who was among the travelling supporters, has criticised the size of the fine.
He said: “Swansea fans paid hundreds of pounds to get to Napoli, simply to support the club.
“To then be held back on buses for hours, forcing the vast majority to miss around a third of the game, was disrespectful and unfair to say the least.
“The meagre fine from Uefa can be paid with money Napoli find behind the sofa. We are not the first fans to suffer in this way, and because of Uefa’s tokenistic punishment, we will not be the last.”
Following the game, a Swansea City spokesman described the fans’ treatment in Italy as deplorable.
He added: “Our supporters were impeccably behaved in Italy and were again a credit to the club. For them to be treated in this manner is totally unacceptable.”

Atletico Madrid youth side fined €10,000 following racist chants - 28/03/2014
Source : http://www.goal.com
Uefa has also issued a partial stadium closure after crowd trouble in the recent meeting with Manchester City, while Napoli and Porto have also been punished for fan unrest
Atletico Madrid's youth side have been fined €10,000 and hit with a partial stadium ban following racist abuse in a recent match with Manchester City.
Uefa launched an investigation after City's 1-0 win in the Youth League round-of-16 meeting on February 26 was marred by alleged racist remarks directed at Devante Cole, the son of former Manchester United and England striker Andrew Cole.
Europe's governing body has since decided there are grounds to take action against the Spanish club's youth sector, prompting the decision to issue a fine and order a section of the ground to be closed for the next home match in the competition, as confirmed on their official website.
Meanwhile, Italian giants Napoli have been fined €26,000 after crowd trouble in the recent Europa League meeting with Swansea City.
Uefa revealed action was taken as a result of "insufficient organisation, illicit banners and setting off of fireworks" in the 3-2 second-leg victory over the Welsh club.
Eintracht Frankfurt have also been punished with a €30,000 fine after fireworks were thrown from the stands in their Europa League encounter with Porto on Febrary 20.

Two fans arrested at Newport County v Portsmouth clash
TWO people were arrested after Portsmouth and Newport County football fans clashed in the city centre on Saturday.
A man in his thirties was arrested on suspicion of assault but was released with no further action. A man in his fifties was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and has since been bailed pending further enquiries. Both men were from the Portsmouth area.
The disorder happened in both the city centre and at the Rodney Parade ground. A Gwent police spokeswoman said that enquiries into the disorder were "ongoing" with CCTV taken from within the ground and outside being reviewed. She said this may lead to further action and possible arrests.
More than a 1,000 Portsmouth fans descended on the city centre on Saturday to face Newport County and Gwent Police praised the vast majority of these fans for supporting in the “right spirit”.
There was a heavy police presence around the city centre on Saturday, which included dogs and officers on horseback. A team of officers contained a large group of fans outside the Queen’s Hotel before walking them through the city centre.
Will Pannell, bar manager at The Lamb pub on Bridge Street, had a doorman to help with the extra crowds but said there wasn’t any trouble, with both Portsmouth and County fans drinking together.
He said: “It was busier than expected. There was a good bit of banter – a bit of chanting, but no trouble. It’s always good in here.”

'The worst violence I have ever seen anywhere in my life': Football intelligence officer recalls South Wales derby clash - 05/03/2014
Source : http://www.walesonline.co.uk
Simon Chivers says the Cardiff City of today is unrecognisable from the one he supported as a boy on the terraces
Trouble flares as seats are torn up and thrown at Ninian Park on a dark day for the derby in 1993
Simon Chivers shudders at the thought of Wednesday, December 22, 1993.
Then the young Cardiff City fan was witness to one of the most notorious nights in derby day history as warring sets of Cardiff City and Swansea City fans clashed inside and outside Ninian Park.
The game was marred by Swans’ fans ripping out seats, Cardiff fans invading the pitch and running battles between both sets of supporters.
“I remember it vividly,” says Chivers, who is now a football intelligence officer with South Wales Police. “That’s the worst violence I have ever seen anywhere in my entire life.”
More than 20 years later and the situation couldn’t be more different. There’s not been any notable issues between the two sides for 16 years and the officer from Church Village intends it to stay that way.
The self-confessed Bluebirds obsessive has been with the force for 15 years and is one of the stars of Police 24/7, which returns to our TV screens on BBC One Wales tomorrow night.
The new series follows a week in the life of South Wales Police, the largest force in Wales. In the opening episode, the eyes of the world are on the Welsh capital for the first derby in the Premier League between Cardiff and Swansea.
We encounter the football intelligence officer and his team as they take on the enormous operation of policing the thousands of fans travelling from Swansea to the capital with the potential for trouble never far away.
For the 39-year-old, appearing in front of the camera was a unique experience – one he admits he had reservations about initially.
“It was completely different to how I expected it to be. I thought it would be quite intrusive and they would be on my shoulder the whole day but they weren’t, they were excellent.
“When I had to do my bits to the camera I did those, but when I had to do my job they melted into the background and I forgot they were there.”
Police and football have never been the easiest of bedfellows – the tragedy of Hillsborough tells us that – but the officer reveals he was happy to be involved as he was keen for the force and his unit to be seen in a different light.
“I want to promote a positive image of South Wales Police and the football intelligence unit. I’m very proud of what I do and passionate about the things that surround football because I’ve been involved in it for a such a long time with the club as a fan and latterly as a police officer.”
Chivers, who was taken by his dad to his first match – against Rotherham United in 1986 – had been a regular fixture on the terraces at Ninian Park throughout the ‘90s and witnessed the violence that dogged the clubs for many years – to the point where Cardiff City was almost stigmatised by its own unwelcome reputation.
When he started out as a part-time police spotter in 2002, providing intelligence on fans to the South Wales Police football intelligence unit he was more than versed in the ebb and flow of matches, and so it was no surprise when he joined the unit full-time in 2006.
In those years he’s seen the club transform its fortunes – on and off the pitch. Cardiff City Football Club is unrecognisable from those dark days in the ‘90s, twice winning family club of the year in recent times and projecting an image that is a million miles away from the snarling beast of yesteryear.
Chivers attributes this startling transformation to two major factors: “Before, fans were seen very much as the problem and not part of the solution,” he says. “That isn’t the way it should be.
“I can accept that there were times, certainly through the ‘90s, when fans did misbehave but the flip side of that was that there were many forces around the country that had a ‘meet and beat’ attitude rather than a ‘meet and greet’ attitude.
“They treated Cardiff fans poorly and behaved poorly which causes a degenerating level of behaviour at away games. The Soul Crew (Cardiff’s notorious hooligan group) were relatively small in number, but they would be involved in situations and act as a catalyst to start other Cardiff fans off. Then you would have a lot of people misbehaving in one place.
“What the current intelligence regime has done is to say that the majority of people who are going to come to your town and city to watch Cardiff City are law-abiding people who if you treat them well will behave well.
“If you have a minority who don’t behave well, we’ll identify them and you can deal with the people who are not behaving and not have a problem with hundreds of people – just those few.
“The other side of that is the introduction of football banning orders has really worked when it comes to deterring people from violence at football matches. Many of the hooligans who used to follow Cardiff City are football fans first and foremost. They didn’t just go for a fight, they went because they loved the club.
“So the thought of first of all losing your liberty and secondly the thought of not being able to watch Cardiff for between three and 10 years (the varying levels of football banning orders) have put a lot of people off it.
“I suppose in the early ‘90s there was very little consequence unless you were very unlucky about being involved in that sort of stuff but it’s completely different these days.”
Chivers gives a stark warning to anybody thinking of misbehaving at a football match in 2014.
“We’ve had one Cardiff fan who threw a single punch at a match and spent four years in prison. The deterrents are so great now it just isn’t worth it.”
