Italy : Torino supporters jailed for attempted murder of Juventus fan - 02/03/2014
Source : http://www.adelaidenow.com.au
THREE supporters of Italian football club Torino have been handed jail terms of up to nine years for the attempted murder of a Juventus fan, Italian media reports.
The sentences were handed down at the end of a trial in which four fans of Torino were charged with attempted murder for the December 2012 attack on a 47-year-old Juventus fan outside Turin’s Juventus stadium.
The victim, according to reports from the court, suffered “unprecedented violence” after being surrounded then chased by the group of assailants.
His life was saved in hospital, but despite a number of operations the unnamed victim was left with a “deformed face” and remains in a state of “deep psychological stress”.
On Friday two of the assailants, 27-year-old Francesco Rosato and 26-year-old Daniele Tantaro, were handed nine-year sentences while Alessandro Plazio, 25, was jailed for eight years and four months.
A fourth defendant, Domenico Mollica, 31, was acquitted.
A lawyer acting for Tantaro, Marco Moda, said he would appeal the sentence: “We will lodge an appeal. Without detracting from the seriousness of what happened, we find the charge of attempted murder excessive.”

Roma and Inter draw 0-0 in half-closed stadium
ROME With nearly half the stadium closed to fans as punishment for territorial chants, not much was missed in a 0-0 draw between second-place Roma and fifth-place Inter Milan in Serie A on Saturday.
Roma was ordered to close the sections behind both goals, where the ultras sit, for anti-Naples chants during a cup match last month. Further insults heard against Sampdoria resulted in a third section being closed.
Some 500 fans protested the ban outside the stadium by lighting fireworks and flares.

Fans' chief to complain after trouble at Wolves v Port Vale
POLICE arrested five supporters following crowd trouble at Port Vale's match at Wolverhampton Wanderers yesterday.
At least one Vale fan was detained on suspicion of throwing a smoke bomb, and Wolves supporters were hurling coins, lighters and bottles at the away crowd during the match.
But Ally Simcock, chairman of Port Vale Supporters' Club, claims that both the stewarding and policing at the game were inadequate, which allowed the situation to get out of hand.
She is set to lodge formal complaints with both Wolves and West Midlands Police on behalf of the Vale supporters.
Ms Simcock said: "The Wolves fans were in the stand above us, and throughout the second half they were throwing bottles of pop, coins and lighters down at us. We could clearly see who was doing it, but when we pointed them out to the stewards, they refused to do anything about it. It's a wonder nobody was seriously hurt. They were only interested if someone had been injured, but by that point it would have been too late.
"Outside the ground the police formed lines between the two sets of supporters, but at the other end of the street they were allowed to run at each other. We told the police this but they weren't interested.
"I know there were some Vale fans who were intent on causing trouble too, I accept that. It's disgusting that someone threw a smoke bomb, but if they'd been searching people properly they wouldn't have been allowed to bring it into the ground."

Trouble flared in Poland on Sunday as league leaders Legia Warsaw saw their clash with Jagiellonia Bialystok abandoned.
The Ekstraklasa pacesetters - managed by former Blackburn Rovers boss Henning Berg - were being held 0-0 at home to their mid-table rivals when crowd trouble in the stands at the Pepsi Arena halted the action.
The police were subsequently asked to intervene, before referee Tomasz Wajda called the match off.
At a press conference, Legia safety director Dariusz Derewicz said: "Today (in) the stands (there) were incidents involving spectators.
"As the head of security of the event at about 18:35 (local time) I asked the police for assistance. The police entered and at 18:42 the representative of the city of Warsaw issued a decision…of immediate enforceability of the termination of the event."
Derewicz confirmed that supporters were subsequently asked to leave the stadium.
Legia suggested on their official website that a meeting of league officials will now likely be held on Wednesday, at which a decision will be taken on the outcome of the game.

Fire-wielding hooligans ruin game as they bombard pitch in Belgium
Royal Antwerp's Belgian second division clash was ruined on Saturday by hooligans who charged through the stands and rained flares down on the pitch.
Antwerp, managed by former Premier League star Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, were hosting promotion-chasing Sint Triuden in an eighth vs fourth place clash at their Bosuilstadion.
However, following an advance from the home side's supporters and a deluge of flares being thrown from the stands, the match official had no choice but to abandon the game.
The video, via RAFC.TV, shows how a considerable group of yobs emerge from a tunnel in one of the main stands, before littering the playing surface with flares.
Hooligans also climb over advertising hoardings onto the pitch, evading stewards, before the Antwerp skipper Jonas De Roeck pleads with them to leave.
The match abandonment could see Hasselbaink's young side face sanctions from the Belgian FA - who would no doubt be well within their rights.

Panathinaikos manager hit square in the face with a soft drink thrown by Olympiakos fans
The Derby of Eternal Enemies lived up to its name as Sunday's match between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos featured a number of scary incidents. One of which involved Panathinaikos manager Yiannis Anastasiou drinking a Coke in the most surprising and painful way possible. But before the animosity between the two sides boiled over, the most frightening moment of all occurred in the 30th minute when 21-year-old Olympiacos striker Michael Olaitan collapsed on the pitch without any physical contact.
Olaitan was taken off on a stretcher and brought to a hospital. Thankfully, initial reports were that he was in stable condition and his collapse was caused by "viral myocarditis caused by an infection."
Visiting Panathinaikos opened the scoring just before halftime and as the game wore on and they scored more goals, the home supporters grew restless. Coming off a midweek triumph against Manchester United in the Champions League, the Olympiacos supporters quickly forgot their joy from a few days earlier. The flares that lit up the stands were thrown onto the pitch and one of them hitting Panathinaikos goal scorer Marcus Berg.
Then, the riot police came out when an Olympiacos fan threw a Coke cup full carbonated syrup and ice that hit Anastasiou right in the mouth.

Huddersfield Town fan assaulted by gang after home game on Saturday
A Huddersfield Town fan was knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked by a gang of four men during a football related brawl in St George’s Square.
The fracas, which police have just made public, happened on Saturday at 6.20pm after the Town game against Barnsley at the John Smith’s Stadium.
Police were called and one officer was assaulted during a struggle.
Police then arrested five males aged 50, 49, 41, 28 and 26 who have since been bailed.
Acting Det Insp Ian Thornes said: “Police were called at 6.20pm to St George’s Square after reports of an affray. Officers attended and during the arrests one officer suffered a injury to the hand.
“Five males were subsequently arrested on suspicion of affray. One suspect was also arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer.”
Detectives are now studying CCTV footage of the train station area to help with the ongoing enquiry.
Det Insp Thornes added: “All five males were detained in custody overnight on Saturday and released on police bail the following morning. Enquires are ongoing.”
The trouble off the pitch came after Barnsley issued a formal apology following heated exchanges between their players and travelling fans. The club launched an investigation after midfielder Stephen Dawson and winger Brek Shea responded to a section of angry supporters after the final whistle on Saturday.

Five football fans arrested in connection with a brawl following last summer's England-Scotland friendly at Wembley - 07/03/2014
Source : http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk
SUPPORTERS from both sides were involved in a fight in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, after England beat Scotland 3-2 on August 14.
FIVE football supporters have been arrested in connection with a brawl following last summer's England-Scotland friendly at Wembley.
The arrests were made in Scotland by officers investigating football-related disorder.
Supporters from both sides were involved in a fight in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, after England beat Scotland 3-2 on August 14.
The Metropolitan Police arrested two men aged 25 and 26 from Glasgow and two men aged 19 and 27 from Dundee.
A 21-year-old from Bonnybridge, Falkirk, was also arrested as part of Operation Arrowtip on Wednesday and Thursday. All five have been bailed.
Superintendent Andy Barnes, who leads Operation Arrowtip, said: "Violence amongst supporters has no place in football, be it before, during or after a match.
"The vast majority of supporters which attended last year's England vs Scotland match behaved in the right spirit and this was an isolated incident.
"These arrests show that anyone who chooses to engage in violence will be pursued by officers and arrested."
Thousands of Scotland supporters travelled to London for the fixture at Wembley Stadium, the first time the two sides had met since 1999.
There were two arrests at the match - one for drunk and disorderly behaviour and the other for public disorder.

Liverpool football fans seek £1m in damages for 'human rights breach' after police forced them to stay on board coaches without toilet breaks as they were escorted from away match - 07/03/2014
Source : http://www.dailymail.co.uk
500 fans were travelling on coaches from Sunderland in March 2011 They say police escort banned them from getting out at service stations Now the supporters are seeking more than £1million in compensation
A group of Liverpool football supporters are suing the police for more than £1million after they were 'wrongfully imprisoned' on their coaches on the way back from an away game. Members of Spirit of Shankly (SOS), a 'supporters' union', claim their human rights were violated during the four-hour journey from a match against Sunderland. The fans, including disabled supporters and mothers with young children, say they were not allowed to go to the toilet at motorway service stations because the officers escorting their coaches would not let them off.
SOS is launching legal claims against Durham, North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, and Greater Manchester police forces over the incident in March 2011, which involved 500 fans travelling on 12 coaches. 'The mood of most people on the coach was very irate,' said SOS committee member Roy Bentham. 'There were kids and women who couldn't use the facilities and the toilets were blocked.
'A lot of people were thirsty and dehydrating. It was quite a warm day. There were kids who were crying. We had a disabled lad on the coach and he needed the toilet and it was horrendous. 'We are [talking about] a seven-figure sum settlement and that's before the legal costs. The claim will go forward on wrongful imprisonment because the police's actions on that day were not proportionate and were unreasonable, and they were heavy-handed.' Mr Bentham said he expected proceedings to start in court later this year.
Disabled fan Chris McNulty said he felt 'humiliated' by the ordeal of being confined to the coach, and had since shunned the transport. Other supporters said they were banned from getting off at one of the vehicle's scheduled stops. Mark Milsom, of West Yorkshire Police, said: 'The force received a letter in September 2013 representing supporters who attended the Sunderland vs Liverpool fixture in March 2011. 'Our legal department replied to the letter repudiating any legal claim, and we have had no further correspondence on the matter.' A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: 'We have spoken to our civil litigation department and they have no record of any papers being served on them in relation to this or of any other complaints relating to that day.' Durham Police and North Yorkshire Police declined to comment on the fans' claims.
