Wembley ban for anti-social fans on day of England v Scotland game - 12/08/2013

Source : http://news.stv.tv

Anti-social football fans will be banned from the area around Wembley Stadium under new police powers for the day of the England v Scotland tie.

Officers around the London ground will be granted the abilities to target groups of two or more supporters under the dispersal zone set up by Brent police and council.

Under the bye-law, police constables and community support officers will be able to ban problem fans from the area around Wembley for 24 hours.

Anyone who has been barred but then returns to the area and is caught could face three years imprisonment or up to a £2500 fine for contravening the dispersal order.

The police and council said the move was in response to the residents and business owners complaints about anti-social behaviour on match days at Wembley.

This included fans loitering in large groups, aggressive and intimidating behaviour to staff at local shops, urinating in communal areas and littering.

Sergeant Pete Goodchild, of the Tokyngton Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "We will continue to carry out high visibility patrols in the area and target offenders. It is our aim, that every resident, business or visitor in Wembley enjoys the right to live and work in peace without being harassed, alarmed or distressed. We will continue to work to identify those responsible and deal with them robustly."

The dispersal zone will be enforced for the entire day on Wednesday, when Scotland take on England in a friendly at Wembley. It is the first time the nations have met since a Euro 2000 qualifier in 1999.

Councillor Aslam Choudry, lead member for crime prevention and public safety in Brent, added: "Having the national stadium on our doorstep is very exciting but it’s important that we prioritise making sure that there’s as little disruption as possible for local residents. The council supports orders that mean Brent residents can feel comfortable and safe on event days and that the excitement of those days positively enhances the borough."

Cyprus : Omonia Nicosia - Aris Limassol - Friendly - 10/08/2013

Source : http://cyprus-mail.com

Fans attack ref in pre-season football friendly

Referees have called for stricter punishments after football fans attacked a referee on Saturday following a pre-season friendly.

The attack against Leondios Trattos, the chairman of the referee association, took place after a game between Nicosia side Omonia and Aris of Limassol at Pelendri.

Omonia fans have held a grudge against Trattos since 2004, when he refereed a match that they believe cost them the title, drawing 1-1 with Paralimni.

Neither club had asked for police presence at the match, which is usually the case with friendly fixtures.

According to the referees’ association’s general secretary Marios Panayi, Trattos was attacked by several Omonia supporters

The referee had to leave the stadium in a police car and was later taken home by another referee.

Despite being injured, Trattos refused to go to hospital to receive medical attention, Panayi told the state broadcaster on Sunday.

Trattos gave a statement to police on Sunday, identifying three people who attacked him.

No arrests have been made yet.

Referees said hooligans were out of control.

“The hooligans’ actions have taken on an uncontrollable form, which is being tolerated by everyone, especially the state,” referees said in a statement.

The lack of strict punishment, indeed the absence of any punishment for such crimes, allowed hooligans to put lives at risk, the referees said.

“Hooligans on Saturday could not even be restrained by members of both clubs, and especially Omonia chairman Stelios Mylonas, who attempted to shield the battered referee,” the statement added.

The association called on the state to take the necessary measures to punish those who took the law into their own hands. It called on the Cyprus

Football Association (CFA) to take measures to also help prevent such incidents from occurring again.

“The CFA should not permit friendly matches from taking place at unsuitable pitches and should cooperate with clubs to find ways to rid the country from hooligans,” the statement added.

Omonia apologised to Trattos and condemned the incident.

The club said its board will hold an emergency meeting to discuss the events and has also expressed their readiness to discuss the matter with the referees.

The CFA said it would act decisively to contribute to the best of its abilities to help prevent acts of ‘terrorism’ which only cause damage to football on the island.

“During a period when clubs are making huge efforts to survive financially, behaviour like this only causes more problems and we hope police investigations will lead to those responsible being charged,” a CFA statement said.

Despite pompous statements frequently uttered by officials, little has been done on the ground to crack down on hooliganism.

Nine Apollon fans were arrested in July following trouble before a friendly game between their team and Anorthosis at the Antonis Papadopoulos stadium in Larnaca.

Zagreb fans involved in three racist incidents, say FARE - 10/08/2013

Source : http://sports.yahoo.com

Supporters of Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb were involved in three episodes of discriminatory and racist behaviour in July, the European supporters' group FARE said Tuesday.

Fans of Hungarian club Gyor were reported over anti-Semitic behaviour when their team faced Israeli opposition, while Honved supporters, also from Hungary, repeatedly targeted a Cameroonian player with monkey chants in another game, FARE said.

FARE said that a total of 14 incidents of "racism, xenophobia, extreme nationalism or homophobia", almost all involving Eastern European fans, were reported to them through eye-witness or media accounts.

"This list is only likely to reflect a proportion of the incidents that occurred," it said, adding that the incidents at matches in European club competition had been reported to UEFA.

Dinamo Zagreb fan group 'the Bad Blue Boys' were reported over "homophobic and racist" chanting during a domestic match against Osijek, a Champions League qualifier against Fola Esch and another against Sheriff Tiraspol.

Some of the chanting targeted club director Zdravko Mamic and the Croatian Football Federation, FARE said.

UEFA later fined the club 25,000 euros ($33,200) and ordered a partial closure of the east stand for their next European match following the incident against Luxemburg's Fola.

Gyor fans "targeted the opposition players and supporters with anti-Semitic chants" at their Champions League qualifier at home to Maccabi Tel Aviv on July 17, FARE reported.

The Europa League match the following day between Serbia's Vojvodina and Honved was marred by behaviour of the visiting Hungarian fans.

"The Vojvodina Cameroonian player Aboubakar Oumarouin was targeted with monkey chants from the Honved supporters throughout the match," said FARE.

"Homophobic slogans aimed at the Vojvodina players were also chanted by the supporters of the Hungarian club."

Similarly, Qarabag's Congolese player Ulrich Kapolongo was targeted by monkey noises and racist chanting when the Azerbaijani team visited Poland's Piast Gliwice for a Europa League qualifier.

Slash Wroclaw and Legia Warsaw, two other Polish sides, were also reported because their fans displayed banners which contained far right propaganda and symbols.

FARE's list also included the pre-season friendly between AC Milan and Sassuolo in Italy, where Milan's Guinean player Kevin Constant walked off the pitch in protest at alleged racist chanting.

England - Scotland - 14/08/2013

Source : http://www.scotsman.com

Thousands of Scotland supporters have arrived in London ahead of the first "Auld Enemy" clash with England since 1999.

Around 25,000-30,000 fans have travelled south of the border for the friendly match at Wembley, which is being held to mark the 150th anniversary of the Football Association.

While the game has cheered publicans, police from both sides of the Border are mounting a large-scale operation to keep the atmosphere friendly.

Fan Charlie Cunning, who travelled on a bus from Dunoon with his sons Jamie and Andrew, said: “I’m just looking forward to attending a Scotland versus England game with my two sons for the first time.

“I used to come to all the games in the 70s and 80s. They were raucous trips – absolute carnage. The difference now is that we have a support that polices itself. We look after one another. In those days it was total chaos – and the trains were horrible.”

It may be a fixture rich in tradition and memories – such as the occasion in 1977 when Scotland fans celebrated victory by digging up the Wembley turf and the crossbars were broken – but officials have warned that criminality will not be tolerated.

A heavy police operation is in place across London for the game, the history of which stretches back to 1872. The FA said a considerable amount of “intelligence-led work” has been undertaken, with the police prepared for an influx of fans.

Police Scotland has sent 12 intelligence staff to work alongside the Metropolitan Police and root out trouble-makers, with officers particularly wary of fans amassing in their long-standing meeting point, Trafalgar Square.

Eleven pubs around Wembley have been reserved for Scotland fans only in an attempt to prevent any trouble. Trains travelling from Scotland will be patrolled by additional officers from British Transport Police.

Scotland fan, 23, arrested by police after he dances naked in Trafalgar Square fountain

A 23-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested for drunkenly dancing naked in a fountain.

The arrest comes after thousands of football fans descended on Trafalgar Square head of the friendly against England.

Fountains were reportedly switched off after washing up liquid was poured into them, causing the square to flood with bubbles.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "At approximately 3.20pm today police arrested a 23-year-old man for being drunk and disorderly after he was spotted dancing naked in the fountain at Trafalgar Square. He was taken to Charing Cross police station where he remains in custody."

Scotland fans filling Trafalgar Square fountains with bubbles ahead of England clash at Wembley

Tartan Army are roamin in the foamin' as they party in central London before first clash with Auld Enemy in 14 years

The sound of the bagpipes echoed across Trafalgar Square as Scotland's famed Tartan Army gathered ahead of tonight's clash with England.

Scottish fans - sporting kilts, facepaint, big grins and the odd ginger wig - covered walls in the shadow of Nelson's Column with the Saltire flag as they passed the time before kick-off at Wembley.

The pools beneath the square's famous fountains filled with men and bubbles as the Scots seemingly put some bottles of washing-up liquid to mischievous use.

Michael Connell, 48, a mechanic, came with a group of fans from the Armadale Sons of Wallace club in West Lothian and travels to as many Scottish internationals as he can.

"If we win, there will be a party. If we lose there will be an even bigger party but it will have been after 90 minutes of inconvenience," he said.

"It would be sweet if we could get something, a win, over England. It would be the best feeling in the world.

"We are passionate and we like to party."

Man who struck horse to appear in court - 14/08/2013

Source : http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk

A FOOTBALL fan who punched a police horse during last season’s Tyne-Wear derby has been charged with violent disorder.

Barry Rogerson, 45, has been bailed by Northumbria Police to appear before Newcastle Magistrates Court on September 9.

Mr Rogerson, of Bedlington, Northumberland, was filmed squaring up to Bud, a police horse from West Yorkshire, before appearing to throw punches at him.

The Newcastle supporter was among the crowds as fans clashed with police after losing 3-0 at home torivals Sunderland in April.

Poland : Legia Warsaw hit by UEFA fine and sanction due following racist abuse in a Champions League tie - 14/08/2013

Source : http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk

THE Polish side have been censured after reports of racist abuse in their July Champions League win over Welsh side, The New Saints.

UEFA has fined Legia Warsaw 30,000 euros (£25,700) and ordered a partial stadium closure for their next European home game because of racist behaviour from supporters during a Champions League second-round qualifying tie with The New Saints.

The sanction, which relates to incidents during the Polish club's matches with the Welsh outfit on July 17 and 24, will be imposed during Legia's play-off second leg at home to Steaua Bucharest on August 27.

Legia won the tie with TNS 4-1 on aggregate and went on to defeat Norwegian side Molde in the next round to book a play-off meeting with Romanian club Steaua.

For the second leg on August 27 Legia have been ordered to close the north stand of their Stadion Wojska Polskiego.

A statement on UEFA's official website confirmed its control and disciplinary body had charged the Polish club under Article 14 of the UEFA disciplinary regulations on racism, other discriminatory conduct and propaganda, in relation to incidents in both legs against TNS.

England: Sunderland ‘monkey chant’ fan banned after racist gesture at West Brom’s Lukaku - 05/08/2013

Source : http://www.sunderlandecho.com

A BLACK Cats fan who made an offensive monkey gesture during an SAFC game has been banned from the Stadium of Light.

Liam Jones’s three-year football banning order will also see him barred from entering any other Premiership ground after he admitted the racist abuse while in the crowd watching the Black Cats take on West Bromich Albion.

Jones had initially denied the offensive behaviour on November 24, when the home side lost 4-2, but pleaded guilty at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court on the day of his trial.

He was arrested 24 hours after the Echo printed a photograph of him making the gesture at Romelu Lukaku when the Belgian striker scored for West Brom at the Stadium of Light.

The 22-year-old, of East Vines in Hendon, was charged with causing racially aggravated harassment, alarm or distress.

After he was questioned by police, he claimed he had been doing a “chicken dance” while in the stand.

He was due to stand trial in June this year, but the case was adjourned until this month, when he changed his plea just before the case was due to begin.

Magistrates slapped Jones with an 18-month conditional discharge and imposed a three-year football banning order, which means he will not be able to attend any Premiership games. The sentence was welcomed by Northumbria Police, whose officers investigated the initial allegations.

Chief Superintendent Steve Neill said: “Racist behaviour of any kind will not be tolerated and Northumbria Police will fully investigate any reports made to us.

“We know people who are responsible for these actions are part of a small minority and would continue to encourage anyone who sees this kind of behaviour to report it to us and help us rid football of any racism.”

Charity Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC) said the case showed that such conduct was unacceptable.

Paul Kearns, the charity’s chief executive, said: “Show Racism the Red Card welcomes this verdict and we are pleased to see that the issue of racism is being taken seriously.

“SRtRC has delivered educational workshops to thousands of young people in Sunderland since 2004 and hope that this verdict acts as a deterrent to others, and once again serves to demonstrate that racism has no place in our society.”

SAFC banned Jones from its ground while the investigation was carried out, which is in line with its policy.

England: Twelve charged over Luton v Millwall FA Cup trouble - 14/08/2013

Source : http://www.standard.co.uk

Police have charged 12 men with public order-related offences in connection with incidents which took place following the FA Cup 5th round tie between Luton and Millwall.

Bedfordshire Police said that, prior to kick-off at the match at Luton's Kenilworth Road ground on February 16, there was a "short stand-off" between officers and a minority of fans in the areas of Dudley Street and Old Bedford Road.

Following the game, a number of incidents also took place in the town centre, a force spokeswoman said.

Bedfordshire Police led a large operation surrounding the hotly-anticipated fixture, which Millwall won 3-0, with officers from six forces involved.

The police were primed for possible trouble, with 300 officers on duty, because a previous cup tie between the sides descended into violence in 1985 - an event which became known as the Kenilworth Road Riot.

A total of 12 men, ranging in age from 19 to 39, will appear before magistrates in Luton today.

Four men have been charged with affray. They are Christopher Fowler, 36, of Chantry Avenue, Kempston; Benjamin Currington, 25, of Clifton Road, Shefford; Nicky Sanders, 21, of Whipperly Way, Luton; and Tyrone Fuge, 39, of Lowther Road, Dunstable.

Six men have been charged with one count of Section 5 public order. They are Daniel O'Keefe, 19, of Aldbanks, Dunstable; Aaron Timms, 19, of Stewartby Way, Stewartby; Grant Mitchell, 19, of Parys Road, Luton; Joshua Plumb, 19, of St Leonards Street, Bedford; Kevin Davis, 33, of Queensdale Crescent, Shepherd's Bush, west London; and Thomas Howson, 19, of Mentmore Crescent, Dunstable.

Liam Jones, 26, of Chapel Street in Luton, has been charged with one offence of Section 5 public order and being drunk and disorderly, while Ben Smith, 25, of Williams Way in Flitwick, has been charged with being drunk and disorderly.

Together with the Bedfordshire force, officers from Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, the Metropolitan Police Service, mounted officers from Thames Valley Police and British Transport Police were involved in policing the fixture between Luton and Millwall, and ensuring that fans of the south London club travelled safely.

During the Kenilworth Road Riot, the football ground was ransacked, and there were running battles between police and supporters, ending with 31 arrests.

England (rugby): Warrington Wolves - Widnes Vikings - 15/08/2013

Source : http://www.warringtonguardian.co.uk

Five Widnes fans arrested following crowd trouble at derby

FIVE Widnes fans were arrested following crowd trouble in Thursday's derby clash at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Troubled flared midway through the first half when a second smoke bomb was let off. One had gone off before the match started from fans in the West Stand.

As stewards went to find the culprit, fighting started and police intervened.

Officers have confirmed this morning five people were arrested and have spent the night in the cells at Runcorn Custody Suite.

Police say they continue to be questioned.

Following the incident, Widnes Vikings RLFC released a statement on its website saying the fans will be banned from games for life.

A spokesman said: "Sadly, a small minority of our fan base have once again brought the club into disrepute by their behaviour at the Warrington game last night.

"As always, the majority of our fans were a credit to the club and played an integral part in inspiring the players to a historic victory against all of the odds, versus the Wolves.

"I want to reassure our fans that the club will not rest until this minority of individuals are routed out of our club, and banned for life.

"We will only end this unacceptable behaviour by working together, to name, shame and ban any individuals involved.

"What this minority need to recognise is that each time they step out of line, they damage the brand of the Widnes Vikings that we all work so hard to create, and also potentially expose the club to a fine from the Rugby Football League.

"Surely they would rather we spend our time and resources strengthening the club both on and off the field.

"I urge them to recognise that they have a role to play in taking the club forward as opposed to dragging it backwards.

"The name and shame campaign will be utilised so that the families, friends and employers of these people become aware of the inappropriate behaviour they are engaging in and the shame they bring to themselves and their club.

"In addition to the banning orders it is highly likely that some will also receive criminal convictions that will stay with them for life.

"I know that our true and loyal fans will support this name and shame campaign as they will not want our reputation in the game to be damaged."

England : Police Charge 24 Fans Over Tyne-Wear Derby Day Rioting - 16/08/2013

Source : http://tyneandwear.sky.com

Police investigating the rioting following the Tyne-Wear football derby have charged 24 fans.

The violence, which saw one man apparently punch a police horse in the face, erupted following Newcastle's punishing three-nil defeat to Sunderland on Sunday April 14.

Northumbria Police have charged 24 people with violent disorder following an extensive investigation.

They are: Alan Graham, 21, of West Road, Benwell, Newcastle, Daniel Wood, 21, of May Close, Hebburn, South Tyneside, Tony Rooke, 18, of Heaton Park Road, Heaton, Newcastle, Jason Daw, 25, of Gainsborough Avenue, South Shields, Michael Barker, 24, Carnaby Close, Prudhoe, Northumberland, Gary Boyd, 20, of Clavering Road, Swalwell, Gateshead, Robert Brown, 29, of Vallum Court, Arthurs Hill, Newcastle, Thomas Simpson, 22, of Edgewell Road, Prudhoe, Northumberland, John Guthrie, 22, of Bristol Street, New Hartley, Blyth, Northumberland, Reece Gillon, 21, of Stancley Road, Prudhoe, Northumberland, Sam Miller, 19, of Blue Bell Way, Harton, South Shields, Barry Rogerson, 45, of Hartlands, Bedlington, Northumberland, Callum Graylish, 18, of Wilfred Street, Byker, Newcastle and James Hills, 18, Sidings Place, Lambton Lane, Durham

A number of youhs who cannot be named were also charged. These are a 17-year-old from Wallsend, a 16-year-old from Wallsend, a 15-year-old from South Shields, a 14-year-old from Gateshead, a 15-year-old from Prudhoe, a 15-year-old from Newcastle, a 17-year-old from Gateshead and three 16-year-olds from North Shields.

All those charged are due to appear at Newcastle Magistrates' Court week commencing Monday, September 9.

They are subject to bail conditions preventing them from attending any Newcastle United football matches.

As part of the investigation police released CCTV images of a number of people they needed to speak to in connection with the disorder, making more than 100 arrests in addition to the 29 that were arrested on the day.

This is still an active investigation and a significant number of advice files are being submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service for a decision on further charges.

Chief Superintendent Gary Calvert, Newcastle Area Commander, said: "This has been an extensive investigation and it is still ongoing, with an excellent response received from the public to identify some of those people in the CCTV images.

"As a result of enquiries we are now in a position to charge people with violent disorder and they will appear in court in due course. In the meantime there are strict bail conditions in place.

"This sort of disorder which took place in April is unusual and as we've already said, it is not reflective of the behaviour of true football supporters.

"When any kind of violence takes place we will do everything possible to make sure those suspected of being involved are traced to ensure the safety of families and supporters attending the games."
