England : Football hooligans admit Shrewsbury town centre fight - 03/08/2013

Source : http://www.shropshirestar.com

Sixteen football hooligans, including four teenagers, have admitted being part of a massive town centre brawl before a Shrewsbury Town match.

They were involved in a fight with a rival group from the West Midlands before Shrewsbury’s League One match with Walsall on October 14 last year.

And they have been warned by a judge that they could face lengthy bans from football matches for their actions.

The fighting in Shrewsbury started in Mardol before spilling into Smithfield Road in front of horrified Sunday shoppers.

Three police officers were injured as they tried to restore order, including Constable Lee Saunders who suffered a broken leg.

All 16 were banned from attending any Premier League or Football League matches until they are sentenced when they appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday.

They must also stay away from Shrewsbury Town’s Greenhous Meadow ground as a condition of being granted bail.

Fifteen of the men admitted charges of violent disorder, while another pleaded guilty to encouraging other people to engage in violence.

The men include Shrewsbury residents Russell Wilson, 47, Lewis Gardiner, 18, Alexander Pugh, 18, Calum Marsh, 23, Stephen Hawkesford, 36, David Jones, also 36, Callum Gwilliams, 19,

Luke Dodd, 24, 19-year-old Aaron Pinches, Daniel Jones, 25, Shaun Peach, 24, and Simon Llewellyn, 34, as well as Paul Walker, 42, and Andrew Copeland, 38, both from Church Stretton, and Ross Gall, 29, from Weston-super-Mare.

Another man, Talal Alsadek, 29, from Shrewsbury, denied a charge of violent disorder but admitted encouraging other people to engage in violence.

He will not face trial for the violent disorder charge.

Judge Robin Onions said the men could all face longer bans from football matches as part of their sentences, and granted them all conditional bail.

The men will all be sentenced in the week of September 16.

Two further men have denied charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in connection with the brawl. They will face trial on a date to be set.

The men have been brought before the court after an extensive investigation by officers at West Mercia Police, who used CCTV footage of the fight to establish the role played by everyone involved.

On the day of the match 15 people were arrested by police. Seven people were arrested in connection with the fight before the match, while a number of other incidents also took place inside and outside the ground.

In total 29 people were charged over the brawl, and the men from the West Midlands involved will appear at Shrewsbury Crown Court next week.

Russian football hooligans clash again in St. Petersburg - 06/08/2013

Source : http://www.upi.com

Rival Russian football fans sporting makeshift boxing gloves clashed in St. Petersburg over the weekend for the second time in a month, police said.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs for St. Petersburg and Leningrad region said it was investigating a Saturday incident in which about 30 football hooligans fought briefly near a subway station, RIA Novosti reported.

"Around [1 p.m.] police received a report of a group fight at the Chkalov metro station," the ministry said. "Upon arrival, police details found no one present due to the brevity of the conflict."

Preliminary reports indicated it was a melee involving about 30 people, the ministry said.

The official statement said the fight happened in a square across the street from the station and that police are actively looking for participants of the fight.

Football fans posting on the Internet said the fight was between backers of the FC Zenit St. Petersburg and Spartak Moscow football clubs, with combatants wearing Zenit's blue-white-blue and Spartak's red-and-white, the Russian daily Komsomolskaya Pravda reported.

A witness identified only as Alex said brawlers wore bandages around their fists as makeshift boxing gloves, which usually indicates the involvement of organized "okolofutbolnoy" soccer hooligans.

"Young men, 17 or 19 years old, around 30 of them, were fighting," he told the newspaper. "On their hands were wound bandages. The fight did not last long, and where they went when they left, I don't know."

Police were trying to sort out the circumstances of the mass brawl by interrogating witnesses such as passers-by, employees and vendors in nearby subway kiosks and shops.

The fight was similar to a July 7 conflict in St. Petersburg in which 50 brawlers fought near the Sennaya Sqaure subway station involving fans of Dynamo St. Petersburg -- including the "Nevsky Syndicate" and "Mobile Group" fan clubs -- and Tula Arsenal, Komsomolskaya Pravda said.

That battle featured mixed martial arts-style fighting with brawlers wearing makeshift gloved and mouth guards, ending with the arrests of seven people. The detainees were released a day later.

Another brawl broke out in August 2012 at St. Petersburg's Moskovskaya metro station when a crowd of local fans descended on supporters of FC Anzhi Makhachkala, with 50 men beating 16 fans of the Dagestani club. The attackers claimed it was revenge for the 2004 Beslan school hostage crisis, which ended with the deaths of more than 380 people.

The same month saw a similar clash between Zenit and Spartak fans on a St. Petersburg street corner, in which the participants wore no club colors to avoid attracting police attention, the newspaper said. Fifteen people were detained in that incident, but again, all of them were released.

Last month, the Russian Federation Council approved the compiling of "blacklists" of soccer hooligans and toughening penalties for offenders, Interfax reported.

The law provides for fines of up to $450 for violators and a new form of punishment -- an administrative ban on visiting matches for up to seven years for particularly persistent offenders.

Under the new law, the Russian government also approved the rules of conduct for fans and will now maintain a list of people who are prohibited from visiting official sports competitions.

Scotland : Celtic close Green Brigade stadium section - 03/08/2013

Source : http://www.shropshirestar.com

Celtic have closed a section of their stadium after repeated warnings to a fans group over safety breaches during home matches.
• Celtic close a section of their stadium after safety breaches
• Fans in Section 111, where the Green Brigade sit, will be relocated or given refunds

Section 111, home to the Green Brigade, a group of Celtic fans who style themselves after so-called Ultra groups, will be offered refunds or an opportunity to relocate.

The Green Brigade are known for prominent banner displays and vociferous chanting. But the club has acted after the group ignored repeated warnings from the club to comply with safety notices that demanded an end to practices such as “body surfing” and the “lateral movement of spectators”.

In a game against Cliftonville in a Champions League qualifier last month, the Green Brigade set off fireworks within the ground, contravening Uefa’s stadium safety policy.

The group has also gotten the club into trouble with the European football governing body over “illicit chanting” in 2011.

In 2010, the Green Brigade caused further controversy after unveiling an anti-poppy banner which prompted fierce criticism from Northern Ireland DUP MP Gregory Campbell.

Grobari Leader Takes Captain Armband From Marko Šćepović

Football is about the fans and for them, but things might become dangerous when they get too much power in their hands. While fans have the right to protest and show their displeasure with a team’s failure, embarrassing a player from the team you support is something that shouldn’t be allowed to happen. And yet Marko Šćepović was humiliated by the leader of the Grobari, the leading firm of Partinan Belgarde supporters (Ultras), who took away his captain armband after getting knocked out of the Champions League by Ludogorets of Bulgaria.

Partinzan lost 3-1 on aggregate, including 1-0 at home, with Šćepović, a 22 year-old striker who is the Vice-Captain to Sasa Ilic, coming on in the 68th minute to try and turn things around. Partinzan needed only one goal thanks to their away goal in Bulgaria, but couldn’t find the net, hitting the woodwork once and getting some fine saves out of goalkeeper Vladislav Stoyanov.

Their hopes were shredded when Ludogorets were awarded an 88th minute penalty, converted by Hristo Zlatinski. This sent Partizan fans into an outraged mood (not for the first time), leading to the scenes at the end, with the players too afraid to stand up to the fans, having their way with the young Šćepović, whose only fault was not being good enough to secure and put Partizan in the playoff of the Champions League qualifiers.

Serbia : Police probe fan snatching Partizan captain's armband - 08/08/2013

Source : http://asia.eurosport.com

Serbia's Interior Ministry is to investigate an incident in which a Partizan Belgrade fan tore the captain's armband off striker Marko Scepovic after a Champions League match.

The leader of a die-hard fans' group vaulted over a barrier and pulled off the armband after the Serbian champions were beaten 1-0 by Bulgaria's Ludogorets at home in a third qualifying round, second leg match on Tuesday.

"The MUP (interior ministry) will investigate whether the individual who entered the stadium had been given permission by Partizan football club to be where he was at the time of the incident and the circumstances that led to it," said Vanja Vukic, the MUP national secretary.

The incident occurred on the athletics track behind one of the goals as out-of-favour Scepovic, who was constantly jeered by the 22,000 crowd after coming on as a substitute, approached a stand to salute home fans after the 3-1 aggregate defeat.

Scepovic told a press conference on Wednesday that he had willingly given up the armband to the fan after a poor performance which "merited discontent among the supporters".

Former Partizan captain Nenad Stojkovic, who won three league titles with the club and made 32 appearances for the former Yugoslavia in the 1980s, said: "In my day police would have arrested the entire stand if this had happened.

"Only the relevant club officals can strip a player of the captain's armband and what happened amounts to an assault against Partizan, although Scepovic does not meet the requirements to be a team leader," the 57-year-old told daily Sporstki Zurnal.

Rotherham United - Sheffield Wednesday - League Cup - 06/08/2013

Source : http://www.thestar.co.uk

Police have condemned a ‘nucleus’ of South Yorkshire football hooligans who pelted officers with bricks and bottles.

Officers had missiles hurled at them after Rotherham United beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 in the League Cup on Tuesday.

Chief Inspector Caroline Rollitt, who oversees policing at football games, said a ‘core nucleus of about 30’ Rotherham supporters were involved in the violence, which lasted up to 10 minutes.

She said the gang were now following the Millers – and were involved in clashes with rival fans when their team played Burton Albion and Chesterfield last season.

Police are now trawling CCTV footage of the latest disturbance, which happened on Main Street and near the railway station, and two arrests have been made so far.

Chf Insp Rollitt said: “Rotherham is a family club, but what we saw at the end of last season – and what is rearing its head again this season – is a nucleus of about 30 lads who follow Rotherham, with the intention of violence.

“We have investigations ongoing into the disorder at Burton and Chesterfield and some of that core group have been and will be arrested.

“The group decided to come out in force on Tuesday, but we stopped them getting to the Wednesday fans, so they turned their attention on us and started throwing bricks and other missiles.

“This group is risking the reputation of Rotherham United, so our message to other fans is come forward with information and we will act.”

Sweden : Malmö FF - AIK Solna - 11/08/2013

Source : http://www.thelocal.se

Arrests made after football violence

Police were forced to call in reinforcements for an Allsvenskan match in Malmö after rival supporters clashed with the club installing metal detectors outside the stadium as a security measure.

Fans of Malmö FF and AIK had previously done battle in the Lilla Torg square of the city on Saturday night. They were joined by supporters, known as Ultras, of Helsingborg and Danes from across the water for a brawl which resulted in arrests and 15 brought into custody.

A hotel where fans of AIK from Stockholm were staying was later cordoned off to ensure the safety of the travelling support from the capital.

On Sunday the violence escalated when fans encountered each other again in the popular Ölcaféet bar which is packed with Malmö supporters on match days.

A heavy police presence was soon on the scene to break up the dispute. Helicopters were also dispatched to monitor events from the sky before, during and after the match between the long-standing Allsvenskan rivals.

Officials from Malmö FF football club installed metal detectors for the first time in their history outside the stadium as an extra security measure.

"It's part of security work that began after an incident against Helsingborg in 2011. We decided on doing this a month ago," Per Nilsson, the club's CEO told local paper Sydsvenskan.

Violence between 'ultras' of Malmö and Skåne rivals Helsinborg have become increasingly common. Last year, Malmö FF player Simon Thern was the subject of a death threat during a match between the two sides in Helsingborg.

"The information we have is that 2300 AIK supporters have come for the match which is more than for the games against Helsingborg," added Per Nilsson.

Premier League New Boys Cardiff City Top Football's Most Violent Fans League - 11/08/2013

Source : http://www.ibtimes.co.uk

Cardiff City have banned more fans from their ground than any other English club, a new study has revealed.

The Premier League new boys, who have long been blighted by a reputation for hooliganism, have issued a total of 135 banning orders to stop unruly fans from attending their matches.

Premier League title contenders Chelsea and Manchester United come in second and third with 112 and 98 banned fans respectively.

Leeds United and West Ham United make up the top five, with 91 and 78 fans banned from their grounds.

More than 2,700 supporters have been banned from attending games across the 92 league clubs.

The teams with the best behaved fans are League One's Milton Keynes Dons and League two's Burton Albion, who have not had to impose a banning order on any of their fans.

Supporters of the Bluebirds have said the table does not give a fair indication of the behaviour of Cardiff City fans, as many of the bans came as a result of a "one off" incident against Chelsea in the 2010 FA Cup.

Supporters from both teams were involved in clashes near Chelsea's Stamford Bridge ground, resulting in more than 90 convictions for disorder and affray.

Vince Alm, chairman of Cardiff City Supporters Club, told the Sun: "We did have problems in years gone by but the police put a lot of resources in - and it has worked.

"We may be top of the league for banning orders but we will soon drop like a stone in coming years as orders expire.

"We only had one arrest last season. We are getting bigger attendances but arrests have gone down. It shows we are going the right way."

A group of Bristol City supporters were banned for a total more than 100 years after being involved in a mass brawl outside the Cardiff City Stadium on 16 February.

A total of 32 fans were banned for between three and eight years following the violence.
