Police Arrest 60 Ahead Of Football Match
Officers from three police forces are deployed to a town centre and make more than 60 arrests for alleged violent disorder.
The disorder broke out in a number of pubs in the town centre ahead of the non-league fixture on Saturday.
Officers from Warwickshire Police, West Mercia Police, West Midlands Police and British Transport Police were deployed in the town shortly before 10.30am in response to reports of disorder at a number of licensed premises.
Police began arresting dozens of people on suspicion of violent disorder at The Granby pub from 3.20pm.
The suspects were transported by coach to Nuneaton police station and held in custody for questioning.
Chief Inspector Adrian Knight, who was in charge of the response, said officers from all police units involved were "successful in containing the disorder and protecting the safety and well-being of the general public".
"This operation was a true collaboration utilising resources from across the region.
"I am extremely grateful to our regional colleagues from West Mercia, West Midlands and British Transport Police for their support in this operation. It has been a particularly challenging day.
"Warwickshire Police is committed to protecting people from harm, whether they live in the county or are visiting, and we will not tolerate any behaviour which puts them at risk.
"Anyone intent on causing trouble in Warwickshire should be aware that we will deal with them robustly."
He added: "The fact that 62 people have been arrested is testament to our commitment to tackle violence and disorder within the county."
Nuneaton Town chief executive Ian Neale said the trouble was nothing to do with the football club or its supporters.
He said police went to The Granby pub to organise an escort to town for Nuneaton fans, but only three people said they were interested in going to the match.
"They were allowed to leave the pub to take a taxi to the ground, which is two miles away from where the arrests were made," said Mr Neale.
"The Boro is a family club and people who are looking for trouble are not welcome at our ground. Anyone found guilty of any offences today will be banned from the ground for life."
He added: "The club works tremendously hard on community programmes to give young people locally aspiration and opportunities in a working class town and we see ourselves very much part of making positive things happen for the town."

Nearly 90 fans arrested ahead of Nuneaton v Lincoln non-league match
Police called to 'violent disorder' at Nuneaton town centre pubs
More than 80 people arrested in the build-up to the non-league football match between Nuneaton Town and Lincoln City have been released on bail.
Inspector Darren Webster, of Warwickshire Police, said 87 people had been released on police bail while enquiries continue.
The arrests were in connection with an incident of "violent disorder" ahead of the Blue Square Bet Premier fixture on Saturday.
Nuneaton Town chief executive Ian Neale said the trouble was nothing to do with the football club or its supporters.
Mr Webster said: "Everyone has now been bailed in connection with the incident. The senior investigating officer will now evaluate what action needs to be taken."
Riot police from three forces and the British Transport Police were called to deal with reports of trouble at several pubs in Nuneaton shortly before 10.30am.
Officers from Warwickshire, West Mercia and West Midlands Police forces then began arresting dozens of people on suspicion of violent disorder at The Granby pub in the town centre from 3.20pm.
Chief Inspector Adrian Knight, in charge of the policing operation, said it had been "a particularly challenging day".
"Police officers responded to reports of disorder at a number of public houses in the town and were deployed in full protective equipment for their own safety," he said.
"It was important to take a positive approach from the start of the operation and, as a result of that, a significant number of people have been arrested for serious offences and will now be processed."
He added police would not tolerate behaviour which risked the public's safety.
Mr Neale said police went to The Granby pub to organise an escort to town for Nuneaton fans but only three people said they were interested in going to the match.
He said: "They were allowed to leave the pub to take a taxi to the ground, which is two miles away from where the arrests were made.
"The Boro is a family club and people who are looking for trouble are not welcome at our ground. Anyone found guilty of any offences today will be banned from the ground for life."
Mr Neale added: "The club works tremendously hard on community programmes to give young people locally aspiration and opportunities in a working-class town, and we see ourselves very much part of making positive things happen for the town."

Giorgos Katidis Banned From Greek National Football Team For Life For Giving Nazi Salute
Greek football player Giorgos Katidis has been banned from his national team for life after giving a Nazi salute while celebrating a goal in the topflight league.
Greece's soccer federation said Sunday in a statement that the AEK Athens midfielder's gesture "is a deep insult to all victims of Nazi brutality."
The 20-year-old Katidis gave a Nazi salute after scoring the go-ahead goal Saturday in AEK's 2-1 victory over Veria in the Greek league. He pleaded ignorance of the meaning of his gesture – right arm extended and hand straightened. He claimed on his Twitter account that he detests fascism.
AEK and the Greek league are considering separate sanctions. AEK fans have demanded Katidis' dismissal from the team.
Katidis has played for Greek national junior teams but not the senior side.

Seven football fans arrested after fight outside York city centre pub
SEVEN football supporters were arrested and another 16 ordered to leave the city centre following incidents before and during York City’s home match.
North Yorkshire Police said a fight broke out outside the Pink Pony in Gillygate at about 2.15pm on Saturday before the game at Bootham Crescent against Port Vale.
A spokeswoman said a bottle and a glass were thrown during a fight between York and Port Vale fans, but it was not believed anyone had been injured.
She said 16 people had been given orders to leave the city centre and not return for a specified period of time, and three men were arrested for public- order offences and drug-possession offences.
CCTV footage was being examined by officers, she added.
She said three fans arrested on Saturday were from Stoke-on-Trent: a 20-year-old for using threatening words and behaviour and two 19-year-olds on suspicion of possessing Class A drugs.
She said two York fans, aged 18, were also arrested yesterday on suspicion of affray.
She said it appeared the vast majority of the 16 fans told to leave the city were from York, with their ages ranging between 15 and 18.
A spokesman for the Pink Pony pub spokesman said the fight had happened outside the premises and had had nothing to do with it.
The force spokeswoman said that in a separate incident, at about 4pm, two men from Stoke on Trent, aged 23 and 43, were arrested for using threatening words and/or behaviour towards the police outside Bootham Crescent.
Also, at about 1.40pm, staff at the Hole in the Wall pub in High Petergate had called police to say 15 to 20 football fans were gathering outside, but were being refused admission because they appeared under age. They subsequently dispersed.
At about 2pm, a 45-year-old man in St Sampson’s Square who was behaving in an alcohol-fuelled, rowdy manner was also ordered to leave the city, but she did not know if this incident was football related.
Police have appealed for witnesses to the incident outside the Pink Pony to phone 101.

Fans arrested over alleged racism
Two men have been arrested over alleged racially-aggravated offences following Sunday's game between Chelsea and West Ham, the Metropolitan Police has confirmed. The pair have been bailed and will return later this month, with police confirming that the two men were from the section of West Ham fans at Stamford Bridge. The police are also investigating incidents of coin-throwing that took place during the Premier League clash. Coins and other objects, including bottles and a hot dog, were thrown in the direction of Chelsea's players as they celebrated Frank Lampard's goal in front of the away supporters. John Terry is also believed to have been struck by a missile while warming up by the West Ham fans. The Football Association has said it will discuss matters with the police and the two clubs involved before deciding whether to launch their own investigation. Chelsea and West Ham will work together to investigate the incident, with CCTV footage being studied in an attempt to identify the targets. The Hammers could be punished by the FA over what happened, and released a statement in which they said anyone found to have thrown coins faced the possibility of a ban. "Any individual found to have acted in an inappropriate way will have to face the consequences of their actions, including the possibility of a ban from attending future matches,'' the statement said. Chelsea ran out 2-0 winners against the Hammers, thanks to goals from Lampard and Eden Hazard.

Egypt: 38 soccer fans charged with violence - 14/03/2013
Source : http://www2.wjbf.com
Egyptian prosecutors have charged 38 members of a die-hard soccer fan club with belonging to an illegal group and other offenses, one of the first signs of a crackdown on the powerful sports organizations that have been at the forefront of the country's protest movement, lawyers said Thursday.
President Mohammed Morsi meanwhile reached out to the city of Port Said, plunged into unrest by recent court verdicts related to a 2012 soccer riot. He promised to "preserve the rights of the people" and discover the "real criminal" behind violence in the Mediterranean port.
Soccer fans, known as Ultras, became a major political force during the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak in 2011 and the subsequent tumultuous transition. They are known for their longstanding animosity with the police.
The charge of belonging to an illegal group appears to be an attempt to pressure the powerful Ultras network, one of the most organized movements in Egypt after the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood. But a crackdown could also backfire, as Ultras are some of the country's most active protesters and regularly clash with police.
Ahmed Ezzat, a rights lawyer who is looking into the case, said the 38 members of the Ultras Devils club were arrested Wednesday during a protest in the Nile Delta city of Shebeen al-Kom. They were also charged with attempting to set fire to a provincial court house and insulting police officers.
He said security has already been beefed up in the town amid concerns that supporters of the detainees may rally demanding their release.
Ezzat said some members of the group had been protesting the arrest of one of their members, Mohammed Gamal Helal, who is charged with attempting to overthrow the government. He said others were picked up at random. Ezzat said at least 15 in the group are minors.
Protests are unusual in Shebeen al-Kom, the capital of Menoufia province a region known for its support of Mubarak-era officials but not otherwise a hub of political activity.
Egypt's state news agency quoted prosecutorial officials as saying the arrested will be held for 15 days pending investigation.
Tensions between the Ultras and the police spiked Saturday when a Cairo court issued verdicts related to the Port Said soccer riot in February 2012, in which 74 people mostly members of a Cairo Ultras club were killed. Most of those convicted were from a rival Port Said sports club.
Two police officers received 15 years for gross negligence and failure to stop the killings, in a rare incident of security officials being held responsible for deaths. But the soccer fans wanted more police to be held accountable for the incident and other episodes of violence. Seven other police were acquitted, and when the verdict was announced suspected Ultras set fire to a police club and a soccer federation in Cairo.
Ezzat denied that the Menoufia protesters set the court building on fire, saying that a flare commonly used by Ultras at rallies hit the building. He said the detainees reported being beaten.
The charge of belonging to an illegal group was frequently used against the Brotherhood when Mubarak was in power. The group was outlawed for decades yet unofficially tolerated.
In his short televised address to Port Said residents, Morsi promised a full investigation into recent violence that claimed the lives of scores protesters and residents. It was triggered last month by an earlier round of verdicts in which 21 Port Said residents were sentenced to death.
The weeks since have seen heavy clashes between protesters and police, ending with military stepping in and taking charge of the city security.
"We feel sorry to see a drop of blood dripping from the body of any of our sons," Morsi said. "I promise you that when investigation is over, all rights of families of the martyrs will be preserved," he said.
"The truth will come out and you will know the real criminal," he said.
Residents blame the police's excessive use of force for the killings. They say that Morsi gave police the green light to crack down on their protests.
Separately, a pan-African rights commission has ruled that the Egyptian government must reopen an investigation into the sexual assault of women protesters in 2005 during the height of political opposition to the Mubarak regime a rare case in which an Egyptian human rights case has been taken to an international forum.
The African Commission on Human and People's Rights said that the Egyptian government must restart the case within 180 days and compensate the four victims who complained to the commission after they exhausted legal avenues at home. They were part of a group of Cairo demonstrators attacked by men in civilian clothes who appeared to be operating alongside the police and officials, with women singled out.
State authorities have said repeatedly that there was not enough evidence to prosecute officials or agents operating with the police.
Egyptian rights groups sought the opinion of the quasi-judicial body tasked with reviewing human rights among members of the African Union. Hossam Bahgat of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, one of the groups that presented the case to the commission, said the decision "sends a clear message that there are other avenues for victims of human rights abuses who are confronted by a wall of impunity granted by the regime's law enforcement and prosecuting officials."
Despite having occurred eight years ago, the decision "has everything to do with today's Egypt," said Bahgat. "In fact, there has been an increase in sexual assaults on protesters in the past few months. And impunity for the police is more entrenched."
Bahgat said his group is taking another notorious case to the commission intrusive "virginity tests" performed on over a dozen women protesters during the reign of the military council that replaced Mubarak. A military officer was acquitted in the case tried before a military tribunal.

Two fans arrested for alleged racism offences at Chelsea v West Ham
• Police confirm two men were from West Ham section of crowd • Police are also investigating incidents of coin-throwing
The Metropolitan police has arrested two men due to alleged racially aggravated public order offences as part of its investigation into the crowd disturbances during Chelsea's 2-0 home win over West Ham United on Sunday.
The force is also looking into the incidents of coin-throwing by West Ham supporters, in which the Chelsea captain John Terry was struck as he warmed up as a substitute on the touchline during the first half. Further objects were thrown at Frank Lampard, the former West Ham midfielder, as he celebrated his 19th-minute goal with Terry in front of the visitors' enclosure.
The police confirmed that the two men arrested were from the West Ham section at Stamford Bridge. They have been bailed with return dates set for late March.
The Football Association says that it will liaise with the Met, speak to both clubs and consider the relevant match reports before it decides whether to bring any charges against West Ham.
The east London club have promised to work with Chelsea to identify the supporters involved in throwing the objects, with a view to banning them from attending matches.
