Malaysia: Police stay alert for hooligans at football matches - 11/12/2012

Source : http://www.nst.com.my

KUALA LUMPUR: The national stadium in Bukit Jalil has proven to be a happy hunting ground for police this year with the arrest of 32 troublemakers for possession of offensive items.
Cheras police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohan Singh said police seized 47 flares, five knuckle-dusters, a smoke bomb, several knives and even small packets of cannabis from those arrested.
The arrests were made prior and during local and international football matches which were played at the Bukit Jalil Stadium. Five of the 32 have since been charged in court.
Mohan said police were on their toes all the time to ensure that football matches at the stadium were played in the true spirit of the game without any unwanted incidents.
“Football is a national sport which is enjoyed by families. If these troublemakers and hooligans start trouble by lighting flares and causing disturbances, it will not only spoil the event for others but also endanger their safety.”
Mohan said four football fans were arrested on Sunday during the AFF Suzuki Cup first leg semi-final match between Malaysia and Thailand. Two were arrested for lighting flares while the other two were nabbed for attempting to come into the pitch.
“The actions of the four fans tarnishes the country’s reputation and brings the game into disrepute,” Mohan said, adding that the four had been released on police bail pending further instructions from the Public Prosecutor’s office.

Dutch police arrest four more after linesman’s death - 11/12/2012

Source : http://football.thestar.com.my

Amsterdam police investigating the death of a football linesman last week arrested four more suspects on Tuesday.
Richard Nieuwenhuizen, 41, was assaulted after an under-17 match between Buitenboys Almere and Nieuw-Sloten Amsterdam on December 2 and died the following day.
Last week, police arrested four teenagers, two of them aged 15 and two of 16. On Tuesday, they arrested three more teenagers and the 50-year-old father of a Nieuw-Sloten player, they said.
Some 12,000 people joined a silent march through Almere, a satellite town near Amsterdam, on Sunday in tribute to the volunteer linesman.

Banned football fan Scott Everington spotted running from fight in Lincoln - 11/12/2012

Source : http://www.thisislincolnshire.co.uk

A man has admitted breaching a football banning order as violence erupted in Lincoln city centre.

Scott Everington was captured on CCTV outside the Ritz pub in High Street on October 6 as fighting broke out between rival groups of football supporters before the Imps' match with Luton Town.

Despite not being involved in the fighting, his presence put him in breach of his banning order, preventing him from entering a certain area of the city from two hours before or after a Lincoln City match.

Everington, 21, of Binbrook Close, pleaded guilty at Lincoln Magistrates' Court on Friday, November 30.

The court was shown CCTV footage which identified Everington outside the Ritz before running down Firth Road when police arrived.

Marie Stace, prosecuting, said: "There was quite a lot of disorder but none of the CCTV shows him involved in that.

"When the police were reviewing the footage, they identified Everington.

"An officer telephoned him, explained why he was calling and cautioned him during the conversation.

"He admitted being in the exclusion zone during the call prior to interview."

Everington accepted he was seen running away on the CCTV and said it was because he knew he was in breach of his order and did not want to be arrested.

Fining Everington £135, chairman of the bench David Cotton said: "You need to realise that a banning order is a court order.

"If you keep breaching it, you know where you will end up.

"You need to make sure you stick to the terms of the order and if you fail to comply, next time you can expect harsher punishment."

Everington was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victims' surcharge of £20.

Boro top Championship table for football banning orders - 11/12/2012

Source : http://www.gazettelive.co.uk

MIDDLESBROUGH FC has topped the Championship table - for the number of football banning orders handed out to fans last year.

A total of 19 Boro fans were given football banning orders last year - more than any other team in the Championship.

Some 35 Boro fans were arrested between 2011 and 2012 - 13 at home matches and 22 at away matches.

Of those arrests, 10 were for public disorder offences, two were for violent disorder, 12 were for alcohol offences, four for offences against property and one was for possessing an offensive weapon.

Leeds United has the next highest number of banning orders in the Championship with 17 handed out to its fans in the last year.

Banning orders – which range in length with a maximum of 10 years – are given to anyone convicted of a football-related offence, or who engage in violence and disorder at football matches.

They are banned from Boro games home and abroad. And on some occasions magistrates can ban them from attending any football stadium.

The convicted hooligans must also report to a police station on the day of every England fixture.

And football banning orders have continued to be handed out to Boro fans this year.

In August 18-year-old Derry Sargent was handed a five-year ban for consistently causing disorder at Boro home and away games.

The teenager, described as “a bit of a nuisance” was handed the ban at Teesside Magistrates Court after an application made by police.

One of the matches he caused violence at was the Leeds match at the Riverside on October 16, 2010.

Sergent received head injuries from a clash with a rival supporter and threw missiles at mounted police officers.

In another game, at Hartlepool’s Victoria Park on July 31 this year he was part of a large group of fans who were seen “throwing punches” and setting off a firework near the ground.

Gary Warren, 40, a dad-of-two, of Broughton Avenue, Middlesbrough was given a five-year football banning order by Teesside magistrates.

Warren had previously had a football banning order, which he had breached twice.

His disorderly conduct was at a number of fixtures including a Leeds game in October 2010.

In March this year seven Boro fans were handed football banning orders at Doncaster Crown Court totaling 60 years. This included a father and son, as reported, inset.

They were arrested for their part in trouble before Middlesbrough’s 2-1 victory over Sheffield United on Saturday, April 9, last year. Violence erupted in the beer garden of a pub in Sheffield before the match.

And in May this year former Yarm public schoolboy, Scott Bird was banned from attending football matches for three years.

He was seen to be “at the forefront” of trouble at a number of Middlesbrough matches including a Boro home match against Leeds in October 2010 and a game against Stoke City in August 2008.

A spokesman for Middlesbrough Football Club said: “We are committed to maintaining a safe environment for all supporters and families at the Riverside.

“The club welcomes the support of the police in identifying and banning anti-social individuals and we will continue our aim of giving everyone a safe and enjoyable experience when they visit our stadium.”

Police hunt football fans after train vandalised - 12/12/2012

Source : http://www.wharf.co.uk

Football hooligans who demolished the inside of a train on route to a Charlton and Crystal Palace match earlier this season are being hunted by transport police.

The incident took place on a service from London Bridge to Charlton before the Championship fixture on Friday, September 14.

Police have released CCTV images of two men wanted in relation to the attack, which saw light bulbs smashed and light gratings pulled down on the rush-hour service.

Six men have already been arrested.

Officers say the group intimidated commuters on the journey and attempted to smash the train's windows.

Detective Constable Jason Schweiger, the investigating officer, said: "We believe the group of men were travelling to watch Crystal Palace play Charlton at The Valley around 7pm.

"They had boarded a crowded commuter train at London Bridge and began pulling down light gratings, ripping off and throwing seat covers, smashing light bulbs and banging on and attempting to break windows. They were also heard to be chanting."

The detective added: "This was obviously an intimidating experience for other passengers and we have conducted an in-depth investigation into the incident to try to identify the people responsible.

"This has included working through forensic opportunities, viewing CCTV footage and speaking with witnesses. Images have also been circulated to other police forces and on police intelligence systems but unfortunately to no avail.

"From viewing CCTV on board the train we have now isolated images of four men we would like to speak to. This was a packed train and I am certain that there are people out there with information that could help our investigation."

Spartak Moscow fans sentenced for fighting before Celtic match - 12/12/2012

Source : http://www.bbc.co.uk

A Russian lawyer has been sentenced to 12 days in prison for fighting with Celtic fans before last week's Champion's League match in Glasgow.

Alexsey Filatov, 36, admitted breach of the peace and resisting arrest over the incident in the city's Fielden Street.

Co-accused Alexey Fedorov, 22, a bank clerk from Russia, was also sentenced to 12 days after he admitted breaching the peace and assaulting police.

Both men were released after their sentences were backdated to 6 December.

They were due to be sentenced next month but Glasgow Sheriff Court was told that the hearing was accelerated at the behest of the Russian Embassy.

'Serious offence'

Sheriff Charles McFarlane QC told the pair: "Whilst Alexsey Filatov committed on the face of it a more serious offence than Alexey Fedorov, I am going to deal with both of you equally.

"Rather than admonish you both, I am imposing a sentence for a period of imprisonment each of 12 days which has the effect that you will be released today."

He also imposed an 18-month football banning order in the UK on each accused.

Four other men, Evgeny Morozov, Vladamir Chiscyakov, Gorgy Morozov, Valery Grishko were given Football Banning Orders for fighting with rival fans.

The court was told that at about 19:00 on the evening of the match, police followed a group of 50 to 60 Spartak Moscow supporters from Merchant City to Celtic Park.

The fans crossed the road to a burger van, where a crowd of about 40 Celtic fans were standing. The groups "squared up" to each other and were shouting and singing.

Punches thrown

Police got between the two sets of fans before Filatov threw several punches at the Celtic supporters.

Two police officers pulled him back and attempted to arrest him for breaching the peace but he struggled violently.

The court was told that police attempted to force a group of Celtic supporters back. Fedorov was seen throwing punches at the fans and kicked a police officer.

Solicitor advocate Liam O'Donnell, representing Filatov, told the court his client graduated as a corporate lawyer in 1998 and had travelled to London first before making his way to Glasgow.

He said Filatov had not been part of the group and was going to see the match on his own, but joined the group of fellow supporters because he "felt intimidated" by the Celtic fans.

Football ban for Aberdeen fans who attacked Celtic supporters - 12/12/2012

Source : http://news.stv.tv

Two Aberdeen FC supporters who attacked visiting Celtic fans have been banned from attending football matches.

Christopher Kyle and Martin Pratt carried out the assault on Union Street in Aberdeen on March 3 this year on the day of an SPL clash between Aberdeen and Celtic.

The pair were sentenced at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

Kyle was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment and a 15-month football banning order, and Pratt to an 180-hour community payback order and a six-month football banning order.

The court heard that the men, both from Aberdeen, were involved in an incident with rival fans which resulted in one man being repeatedly punched and kicked by Kyle.

Speaking following sentencing Vicki Bell, Football Liaison Prosecutor for the North of Scotland, said: "The behaviour of Christopher Kyle and Martin Pratt was totally unacceptable both in law and to all genuine football supporters.

"Whether the offences are committed at the match itself or, as in this case, while travelling to or from the stadium, we will do all in our power to bring those who perpetrate such crimes to justice."

Chief Superintendent Adrian Watson, Aberdeen Division Commander, welcomed the sentencing.

He said: "Grampian Police is committed to stamping out all forms of unacceptable behaviour, both at matches and in the aftermath of games.

"Anyone who visits Aberdeen, be it for football, shopping or just a night out, should feel safe, and it is unacceptable that these two individuals made the choice to behave in a way that could have resulted in someone being seriously injured.

Mr Watson continued: "These banning orders should send out a clear message that not only Grampian Police but Aberdeen Football Club and the fans themselves, will not tolerate this type of behaviour, whether it is during a game or out in town afterwards.

"These orders really hit the perpetrators where it hurts, by preventing them from watching football anywhere in the country for long periods of time and is a powerful way to supplement traditional sentences.

"It is unfortunate that the very few continue to act in this way, but rest assured, anyone who acts in a similar manner will be tracked down and dealt with in the strongest terms."

Bundesliga to vote on stadium security proposals - 12/12/2012

Source : http://www.dw.de

German football fans have united in silent opposition to proposals to introduce tighter security in and around the stadiums. But in the face of increasing violence, Bundesliga clubs are under pressure to take action.

Season 12/13 - December - Page 3 923185hanover

"We have to do everything possible to ensure that our football stadiums become safer places for the 99.5 percent of fans who are peaceful," said the president of the German Football Association (DFB), Wolfgang Niersbach, in the lead up to Wednesday's vote on new security measures.

This year again saw an increase in violence at Bundesliga and other German matches. In extreme cases, hundreds of fans stormed the pitch, forcing an interruption of the game.

One of the most dramatic incidents came in October this year when Hannover and Dynamo Dresden fans clashed after a German Cup (DFB Pokal) fixture. The DFB's sports court punished both clubs on Monday this week, fining Hannover 70,000 euros ($90,650). The court also banned Dynamo Dresden, which is notorious for its violent fans, from taking part in the competition next year. For a second division side like Dresden, cup games against top-league opponents can provide a crucial financial boost.

Most of the incidents followed the same pattern: Fans of the home side attacked supporters of the other team - for instance when Cologne supporters hounded travelling Borussia Mönchengladbach fans last season by throwing bottles and rocks. They then jumped into cars and chased the Gladbach bus out of town, and several kilometers down the Autobahn.

Tasked with stepping in to halt such clashes, the police often bear the brunt - with officers getting injured or squad cars suffering damage.

There has been a steady rise in soccer-related violence in Germany over the past 10 years. During this timespan 1,165 policemen and 4,044 football fans were injured, with a total of 41,335 people arrested before, during and after Bundesliga matches. These statistics were compiled by the federal government in Berlin in response to questions from the opposition at the end of last year.

The October 31 violence between Dresden and Hannover fans scarcely pointed to improvement after the report's publication.

Germany's most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia, is home to more than a quarter of all professional Bundesliga clubs. At a time of budgetary constraints, the authorities there are keen to see the clubs pick up some of the policing tab.

"Our police devote almost one third of their time to football security issues which Bundesliga clubs refuse to deal with," according to North Rhine-Westphalia's interior minister, Ralf Jäger, who says the cost of police operations is spiralling out of control.

In response to comments like these from top politicians urging clubs to act, the German Football League (DFL), which operates the Bundesliga, and the national governing body (DFB) have come up with 16 proposals.

One of them would force clubs to pay for police operations and any damage done to police property on match days. There is also a plan to require clubs to send their own security personnel with traveling fans to keep an eye on potential troublemakers before, during and after road games - and help diffuse any trouble. Fan representatives from both teams are to be included in preparations well in advance of any given match.

Another important point on the agenda is the stricter enforcement of an existing zero-tolerance policy towards flares and fireworks inside stadiums. Fans defy the blanket ban on a regular basis, lighting up flares in tightly-packed standing areas, sometimes hurling them in the direction of the opponents' supporters or onto the pitch. To prevent such behavior in future, the clubs want to introduce video surveillance of the stands throughout matches and tougher controls at the stadium entrances.

There are new provisions for what are classified as "problem matches" - local derbies between bitter rivals, whose fans have a long-standing and deep-rooted animosity and can be expected to clash before or after a match. Schalke and Dortmund are one example: Following the ever-emotional "Revierderby" derby two months ago, 180 hooligans were arrested.

The new proposals include allowing clubs to reduce the number of tickets allocated to the visiting team's fans, currently at around 10 percent of total capacity. This and the possible reduction of standing areas are among the most contentious issues.

Fan organizations say supporters will have to foot the bill for heightened security, by virtue of increased ticket prices.

They argue that especially standing areas are vital so as not to exclude those who can't afford the high price of tickets in the seating areas - in other words those faithful grassroots fans who are the heart and soul of German fan culture.

The security proposals, which are to be put to a vote on December 12, have prompted an unprecedented, nationwide fan response: The first 12 minutes and 12 seconds of all Bundesliga games on the last three matchdays were played in front of tens of thousands of silent supporters - a reference to the December 12 date.

The fans have protested with banners whose motto loosely translates as: "Without a voice, there's no atmosphere."

"Football fans fear they're being stigmatized in an unfair way,” said Volker Goll, the spokesperson for KOS, an organization that coordinates the various fan projects. He wants to see the clubs reach out more to the fans and include them in developing ideas for the future.

"I think we should ask why clubs and politicians don't make better use of the expertise of fan organizations,” Goll said.

In response to initial protests, fan clubs' suggestions were included in the paper that is to be voted on now. But this has not apeased all of them.

"If emotions cannot be expressed freely inside the stadium there is a real danger that bottled-up aggression will be released elsewhere in society," warned Goll, saying similar security steps Italy or England had not led to an improvement.

Instead, the German fans argue, Germany is the only country in Europe where everyone can still afford to buy a ticket to a top-flight match with good football and a breathtaking atmosphere. And that is what they hope to preserve.

Marseille victims of hostile reception

Season 12/13 - December - Page 3 806026scb

Marseille were on the receiving end of alleged racist insults and the threat of their bus being pelted with stones at Bastia on Wednesday.

The game was played behind closed doors at the Stade Armand Cesari as punishment for violent incidents involving Bastia fans during the Corsican derby at Ajaccio in October.

However, authorities granted permission for a giant screen to be erected in a car park adjacent to the stadium, meaning a few hundred Bastia fans gathered to watch the game.

While the arrival of the OM team coach was greeted with taunts, there were also minor explosions. The hostile atmosphere meant plans for visiting president Vincent Labrune and Bastia counterpart Pierre-Marie Geronimi to lay a wreath at a memorial to the 18 fans killed when a temporary stand at the stadium collapsed before the 1992 French Cup semi-final between OM and Bastia had to be delayed.

Though the ceremony eventually took place, kick-off was briefly held up due to smoke from flares, lit outside the stadium, drifting across the pitch. While Bastia coach Frederic Hantz claimed "it was more unsettling for us" to play inside an empty stadium, the OM players were far from impervious to the atmosphere. "I can't deny that, off the pitch, we could hear quite of lot of things," said captain and goalkeeper Steve Mandanda.

Marseille's 2-1 victory, courtesy of a fine strike from Mathieu Valbuena and an Andre Ayew penalty with ex-Blackburn forward Anthony Modeste replying for the hosts, was followed with alleged racist insults directed towards certain OM players as they returned to the team coach. Their departure was then delayed by police, who had been informed the coach would likely come under attack from Bastia hooligans throwing stones en route to the airport.

"Great three points on that farmer's field. No fans in the stadium, but loads outside throwing fireworks," Joey Barton said on his Twitter account, adding: "Freezing cold showers as well."

France : Bastia barred from playing at home after violence - 13/12/2012

Ajaccio - Bastia

Bastia have been barred from playing at home until further notice after supporters of the top-flight club were involved in a series of violent incidents, the French League (LFP) said on Thursday.

Fans threw a barrage of fireworks outside the Furiani stadium on Wednesday as Bastia's 2-1 Ligue 1 home defeat by Olympique Marseille was played behind closed doors.

"Regarding all the serious acts committed by some Bastia fans during this game and previous ones ... the disciplinary commission has decided to bar the club from playing in their stadium until further notice," the LFP said in a statement.

The ground was empty for the encounter with Marseille after ugly incidents marred the game at neighbours Ajaccio in October.

A linesman was also hit by a missile in Bastia's League Cup game against Lille two weeks ago.

German football fans protest security crackdown with wall of black cards

Fans of Bayer Leverkusen and Hamburg held black cards and lit flares Saturday as they protested new security measures to be introduced in German football stadiums.

German clubs have agreed a toughened set of rules for supporters due to concerns over a rise in violence connected to the sport, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

The Guardian's David Conn reported earlier this month that supporters groups "have interpreted the suggestions ... as a means by stealth to sedate German football's raucous, standing fan culture."

Arrests after flare-up at A-League match

Season 12/13 - December - Page 3 416450sydneyfc

POLICE arrested three men and a teenage boy after flares were thrown, chairs were smashed and a pre-match brawl erupted between fans at Sydney's A-League soccer derby.

At Saturday night's showdown between Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers, six flares were thrown and several chairs smashed by a group of Wanderers fans, Detective Superintendent Gavin Dengate told reporters on Sunday.

Loud detonators were also set off at several train stations, he said.

Supt Dengate warned fans that police would not tolerate such dangerous behaviour.

"We're not going to see here what may be seen unfortunately throughout parts of Europe and other parts of the world."

Soccer authorities would decide whether to ban the men from attending further games, Supt Dengate said.

Police identified alleged offenders from CCTV footage and charged two men, aged 21 and 28, with possessing a non-firearm for discharging an irritant in a public place.

They will appear in the Downing Centre Local Court on January 8.

A 16-year-old boy was also arrested for allegedly throwing flares and will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act.

Another man was charged with affray and resisting arrest after a brawl between fans near Central Station.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage and expect to make more arrests.

Football Federation Australia corporate affairs manager Kyle Patterson says the federation will consider banning offenders from future games.

"We do have a zero tolerance," he told Macquarie Radio.

"It was regrettable that last night a fantastic event with over 26,000 people was spoilt by a few irresponsible fans.

"They'll pay a price for what they've done."

Police issue warning to Wanderers over flares, arrests during derby clash with Sydney FC

POLICE will officially warn Western Sydney Wanderers supporters over their behaviour following arrests and violence during Saturday's derby against Sydney FC.

Three Wanderers fans were arrested for throwing flares, while police are still reviewing CCTV footage from Allianz Stadium to identify and arrest more perpetrators this week.

Wanderers fans were also involved in fights near Central Station as they arrived by train from the west, and some fans caused disturbances to traffic in Moore Park by blocking roads.

The Wanderers' official support group, The Red and Black Bloc, posted a photo of the flares on the pitch on their Facebook page yesterday.

A police source told The Daily Telegraph yesterday they would meet with the Wanderers in a bid to stamp out further trouble ahead of Friday's home game against Adelaide United at Parramatta Stadium.

"There were problems prior to the game last Saturday, we will be meeting up with the club," the source said.

"There was some fighting when they came out of the railway station.

"They blocked off roads, there were a lot of flares."

Two men, aged 28 and 21, have been charged with possessing "non-firearm for discharging irritant" in a public place and were bailed to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on January 8.

The third person arrested for throwing flares - a 16-year-old boy - will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act.

Flares were thrown from the crowd on to the stadium turf just before match kick-off, and another was lobbed close to Wanderers goalkeeper Ante Covic after the visitors scored the opening goal in the 24th minute.

Police are poring over video footage from the ground and could make more arrests this week.

"This is a very serious issue and police will not tolerate people throwing flares," said Eastern Beaches Local Area Commander, Superintendent Gavin Dengate.

"It is an extremely dangerous practice and serious injuries can occur.

"Two people have been charged and a young person arrested and we will be reviewing CCTV with the intent of identifying further offenders."

The Wanderers won the match 2-0.

Afterwards, the Western Sydney fans celebrated with their team and were deliberately kept back while Sydney FC's fans left early, ensuring there was no encounter between the two groups outside the ground.

Australia :Adelaide United - Wellington Phoenix - 16/12/2012

Wellington striker alleges racist fan abuse

Wellington Phoenix striker Paul Ifill has accused Adelaide United fans of racially abusing him during his side's 3-1 loss in the Australian A-League.
The British-born former Barbados international tweeted his displeasure after Sunday's match, saying he was subjected to racial abuse from a small number of fans at Adelaide's Hindmarsh Stadium.
"Bad times poor result and racist abuse from a minority of fans," he wrote, adding in a follow-up tweet: "no problem with a bit of banter but a line was crossed today."
The 33-year-old, who has been with the New Zealand-based Phoenix since 2009, said it was the first time he had experienced such treatment in the A-League.
The Phoenix said it was treating the matter seriously and had asked Football Federation Australia (FFA) to launch a full investigation.
"We have also been in communication with Adelaide United regarding the incident and have accepted Adelaide United's unequivocal apology for the incident," it said in a statement.
Adelaide United said it would assist any investigation by the FFA and stadium management, as well as supporting any sanction imposed on spectators found to have abused Ifill.
"Adelaide United FC conveys its concerns to Paul Ifill, as this incident does not reflect views or expectations of Adelaide United FC," it said in a statement.

No trouble between Plymouth Argyle and Exeter fans at Devon derby clash

POLICE said there was no major trouble between football fans at the Devon derby on Saturday.

A spokesman for the Devon and Cornwall force said only one person was arrested outside Exeter City's ground during the game with Plymouth Argyle.

He added the man was suspected of using abusive language towards officers and may not even have been attending the game, which kicked off at noon.

In 2010 more than 20 people were arrested at the first Devon derby between the two clubs in eight years.

But the last three clashes between the rivals have passed off without major incident.

Almost 6,500 fans, including 1,200 Argyle supporters, attended the game.

Dutch Teenagers Arrested for Death of Football Linesman - 16/12/2012

Source : http://www.vincenttimes.com

Roses were spread across his hearse while football players wore black armbands during the games to pay tribute to “a real football man.”

The death of Richard Nieuwenhuizen rocked the world of Dutch football last week when reports came out that a group of teenage footballers engaged in a violent attack against Nieuwenhuizen that allegedly led to his death.

The players reportedly punched and kicked Nieuwenhuizen, who was rushed to the hospital after the incident but succumbed to death a day after, according to BBC reports.

Four football players coming from the Amsterdam club Nieuw Sloten, all aged between 15 and 16, reportedly engaged in the violent attack.

Nieuwenhuizen was performing his official duties during a game as volunteer linesman for Buitenboys Club in the town of Almere the day he was attacked by the gang of players. His son was playing that time with the rival team of the Sloten and, according to BBC, saw what had been done to his father.

The death of the linesman immediately sent a wave of shock to the Dutch sports world, triggering questions on the culture of violence cultivated by the sport.

The latest BBC report said that four more were arrested Tuesday in Amsterdam, one being a 50-year-old man.

Three of those earlier arrested have already presented themselves in court and have been charged with homicide, physical attack and public violence by authorities, according to the report.

The 41-year-old Dutch linesman is survived by his three children.

Police authorities have encouraged to surface those who have evidence such as photos and videos of people who were present during the incident.

The fallen linesman was interred Monday in Almere with thousands attending. Sympathies also echoed during games of football clubs Sunday by allowing a minute of silence before the professional games started, reports said.

For the Buitenboys team and their coach, the violent incident is unacceptable. According to coach Egor van Gelden, he was able to disperse the attack but one of the boys reportedly came back and kicked the lineman’s head. Even then, the damage was already irreparable because Nieuwenhuizen fell into a coma and eventually died.

BBC reported that the Dutch Football Association, or KNVB, has issued a strong call for respect, but when asked what should be done to stop the violence, the group was not able to provide definite answers.

The association also said that the attack against Nieuwenhuizen was the “worst attack” in football history in the country.

BBC reported that a similar violent assault resulted to the death of a football fan when one player from a Dutch team kicked him in the chest.

According to one amateur referee and sports blogger, the culture of violence in Dutch football could start from the youth, who sees unruly behavior even from their parents.

Huub Bellemakers recalled his experience in the said BBC report when he was head-butted by a player when he issued a red card to the said player. “We Dutch people don’t like being told,” he said.

He added that certain courses of actions must be done to prevent violence and protect those involved in the game.

The professional players should also act as role models by avoiding violence and doing something good that the youth will emulate.

Several others expressed their sympathies particularly the chairman of the Buitenboys Club where the Dutch linesman was a volunteer, who said that Nieuwenhuizen “was a real football man.” Meanwhile, Dutch sports minister Edith Schippers referred to the incident as “terrible.”

The Nieuw Sloten Club, where the attackers came from, was also taken aback by the violent incident and said that it will prevent the players from playing for the club, removed itself from the Dutch league and momentarily suspended the team’s operations, reports said.
