135 detained, 11 injured in fan clash in Colombia

Police say they have detained 135 people after fan violence left 11 people injured in Colombia.

Authorities said on Thursday three people were in serious condition after fans from America and Deportivo Cali clashed before, during and after the teams' match in the Copa Colombia on Wednesday in Cali.

The violence occurred even though fan groups from both teams agreed on a peace pact ahead of time.

Officials said a policeman lost a finger during the clashes.

Last Sunday, one man was shot dead and nine people were wounded in knife attacks after fans of Medellin rivals Atletico Nacional and Independiente fought each other and among themselves.

Police reported 315 arrests and confiscated more than 450 knives at the time.

Rioting fans interrupt Athens derby

Rioting fans clashed with police and delayed the start of the second half of the Athens derby between Panathinaikos and Olympiakos Pireaus by 45 minutes at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday.
Fans of the home team threw flares, railings and seats at the police as they tried to move in and quell the trouble with teargas.
Panathinaikos have already been punished once this season for the unruly behavior of their fans and were ordered to play a match behind closed doors.

The Greek league game between leader Olympiakos and Panathinaikos was abandoned with eight minutes to go on Sunday because of escalating clashes between fans and the police.

Police announced that 57 people had been detained and a further 20 arrested, while nine police officers were injured, two of them seriously.

"We dedicated several thousand personnel to policing the game and we faced, beginning two hours before the game started, escalating attacks,» police spokesman Athanassios Kokalakis said.

Olympiakos, four points ahead of Panathinaikos before the game, was leading 1-0 from Djamel Abdoun's 51st-minute goal.

No Olympiakos fans attended the game at Olympic Stadium in accordance with a league policy not to allow visiting fans due to fears of violence.

Sports general secretary Panos Bitsaxis said on television that the state had taken «the best possible security measures» and accused football clubs of doing nothing to curb the fanatical supporters and of opposing the state's attempts to impose tougher sanctions. Bitsaxis left open the option of postponing the next round.

According to league rules, Panathinaikos is facing having three points deducted and a steep fine, up to €180,000, and could play several games in front of empty stands. Up to two points could also be deducted from the following season.

Clashes between police and fans started before the game, when hundreds of youths without tickets tried to enter the stadium. The conflict continued throughout, forcing the second half to start 35 minutes late.

A group of about 200 hooded individuals were seated in a VIP section, next to the players' tunnel. Some of them carried clubs and iron bars. They were confronted by a line of riot police on the other side of a trough, who they attacked at halftime.

At one stage, about 30 of the hooded hooligans isolated two policemen and attacked them with clubs and bars. The beating went on for about five minutes before another detachment of riot police came to their colleagues' rescue.

In the second half, Panathinaikos fans set fire to seats in the upper and lower decks. Referee Tassos Kakos abandoned the game when firebombs were added to the mix of projectiles thrown at police and photographers.

The firebombs — which were also thrown at police outside the stadium — were water bottles filled with gasoline, liquid ammonia and little sticks of dynamite.

"The noise was so much that the players could not concentrate,» Olympiakos coach Ernesto Valverde said.

The stadium's electronic scoreboard caught fire and was damaged. Fire trucks entered the stadium's track to put out the fires but were attacked by fans, so trucks with water cannons were used instead. The fires were eventually put out.

"We had been cooperating with the police for almost a month in preparation for the game,» league general manager Michalis Anagnostou said. «The result was not what we wished for.»

Broadcaster NovaSports did not show any of the images of exploding firebombs, instead focusing entirely on the match.

Owner Forthnet Group released a statement saying they «will continue to isolate violent scenes and any message irrelevant to football.»

Volley: Apollon Limassol - Galatasaray - 15/03/2012

Greek Cypriot lunatics of Apollon Limassol attacked Galatasaray Women Volleyballers

The Galatasaray women’s volleyball team had to endure an attack by Greek cypriot fans after a game against the Greek Cypriot team Apollon Limassol.

Galatasaray players suffered the attack from home fans after beating Apollon Limassol 3-0 in an away game in the CEV Cup competition. Greek Cypriot fans threw seats, lighters and firecrackers at the Turkish team’s players. Turkish players were also negatively affected by the pepper spray used by Greek Cypriot police officers.

Greek Cypriots should be banned from international sports

Turkish Youth and Sports Minister Suat Kılıç strongly condemned the incident. “I condemn the Greek Cypriot violence against Turkish players at a time when the Greek Cypriot administration was getting ready for EU term presidency in an unfair and illegal manner,” Kılıç stated. ‘ I invite the international sports world to be more sensitive by not ignoring the violence perpetrated by Greek Cypriots against guest players. The Greek Cypriots should be banned from all international sports activities as they do not act in harmony with the Olympics spirit.”

Last year Pınar Karşıyaka, a Turkish men’s basketball team, came under attack by crazed Greek cypriot fans after a game with APOEL during the FIBA Men’s Euro Challenge Cup.

The European Volleyball Federation has just warned the Greek Cypriot club Apollon Limassol.

Cyprus: AEL Limassol - Apollon Limassol - 15/03/2012

Source : http://www.cyprus-mail.com + http://www.sentragoal.com.cy

Limassol derby abandoned after crowd trouble

THE Limassol derby between AEL and Apollon was abandoned on Sunday afternoon after Apollon supporters repeatedly threw objects onto the Tsirion Stadium pitch.
When Silas scored for AEL deep in injury time to give his side a 3-1 lead, various objects started raining down, leading referee Yiannakis Anastasios to abandon the game.
Early in the second half, Anastasios had first stopped the game and headed down the tunnel with his assistants after several objects were thrown onto the pitch by Apollon fans.
The interruption lasted for approximately ten minutes and it seemed as though that was the end of the trouble until the Portuguese midfielder’s goal.
“It is sad that such a good game will be discussed at the federation’s disciplinary court,” said AEL said spokesman Avraam Ploutis afterwards.
“We believe that our team earned the three points, because there is no doubt what the cause of the trouble was.
“It is unfair to the players of both sides to invest so much effort and then for someone to deny them the opportunity to claim the well-deserved victory on the field.
“In my mind there is no doubt which team will get the three points. I want to congratulate our fans on not responding to the provocations as that was the right thing to do and by doing so they have protected their loved club,” he added.
Elsewhere, Andre Alves scored his second league goal for Omonia as the Nicosia powerhouse record a narrow 1-0 victory over Enosis Neon Paralimni, while defending champions APOEL topped Anagennisi in Derynias 2-1 with Esteban Solari scoring the winner 20 minutes from time.
With one game remaining in the regular season of the national championship, Omonia lead the standings with 56 points, while APOEL are in second with 55.
AEL drop to third on 54 after their abandoned game.

Arrests after Limassol football violence

TWO teenagers and a 26-year-old man have been arrested in connection with violent clashes that took place after Limassol football rivals Apollon and AEL met on Sunday.
According to a police spokesman, the violence started well before kick-off. Two 16-year-old boys were arrested after being spotted on CCTV hurling two red cylinders at Apollon fans.
As they then attempted to enter the Tsirion Stadium, they were stopped by police and searched. They confessed to possessing firecrackers and throwing them at Apollon fans. They were arrested a little while later.
Police later arrested a 26-year-old for shouting abuse at members of the force and attacking an officer and stealing his wireless radio.
The match was cut short twice by referee Yiannis Anastasiou, both times due to objects being thrown onto the pitch by fans in the Apollon stands, including a firecracker that landed next to the linesman. In an eventful game, which saw a player from each team being sent off, members of rapid reaction unit MMAD were forced to intervene twice to calm agitated fans.
In the end, the game - which at the time of the second and final interruption saw AEL lead 3-1 - was cancelled and the Cyprus Football Association will decide the outcome.

Carlisle United - Preston North End - 20/03/2012

Source : http://www.lep.co.uk

Six arrested in violent PNE clashes

Six arrests were made after clashes between Preston North End football fans and rival supporters.

Cumbria Police has confirmed four people have been charged following the incidents in Carlisle ahead of the club’s goalless draw at Carlisle United on Tuesday night.

Thomas Coyne, 52, of Claremont Avenue, Leyland, was charged with being drunk and disorderly and will appear at Carlisle Magistrates Court on April 3.

They confirmed a 15-year-old youth was given a warning for a public order offence and a 20-year-old man from Lancashire was also handed a fixed penalty ticket for a public order offence.

A police spokesman said: “Police in Carlisle dealt with a number of people for disorder incidents prior to the Carlisle United and Preston North End match.

“A number of Preston supporters travelled up by coach to Penrith then took a train to Carlisle and were escorted by Police officers into The Griffin, which is the designated supporters club.

“Prior to the game there were some altercations between the two sets of fans and a number of supporters were escorted to the ground and there was some minor disorder inside The Griffin pub.

“There were further minor incidents of disorder reported near to the ground and over 50 dispersal orders were issued by police which resulted in a group of Preston fans being directed to leave Carlisle.”

The spokesman added there was no disorder during the League One match and fans enjoyed “a friendly and safe match” in North End’s first trip to the border club since 1997.

Ian Burrows, 41, of New Wellington Street, Blackburn, was also charged with a public order offence and will appear before magistrates in Carlisle on April 5.

Two other men, Liam Hethertington, 22, of Semple Road, Carlisle, and Christopher White, 27, of Prescott Road, Carlisle, were charged with a public order offence and a racially-aggravated public order offence respectively.

They will appear at Carlisle Magistrates Court on April 5.

England: Dad and son among seven Boro fans banned for 60 years - 21/03/2012

Source : http://www.gazettelive.co.uk

A FATHER and son are among seven Boro fans who have been hit with football banning orders totalling 60 years.

The hefty bans have been handed to the Middlesbrough supporters after violence flared before a game in Sheffield.

The seven were handed custodial sentences and lengthy banning orders for affray and violent disorder when they appeared at Doncaster Crown Court.

They were arrested for their part in trouble before Middlesbrough’s 2-1 victory over Sheffield United on Saturday, April 9 last year.

Violence erupted in the beer garden of a pub in Sheffield before the match.

Rival fans threw glasses outside the Roebuck Tavern on Arundel Gate, in the city centre, at around 2.30pm.

When a Blades fan confronted a number of Middlesbrough fans about their actions, he was attacked and beaten unconscious nearby, causing extensive injuries.

The victim was left needing surgery after the savage attack during which he was kicked in the head and body.

South Yorkshire Police led an investigation with Cleveland Police and North Yorkshire Police.

CCTV footage was used to convict the seven Boro fans who were found guilty of the disorder.

A Billingham dad and son were sentenced for violent disorder.

Jack Thomas, 19, of Hardy Grove, was given two years in a young offenders’ institution and a nine-year ban. His father Gerard Thomas, 45, also of Hardy Grove, was handed a two-year prison sentence and a nine-year ban.

Meanwhile Carl Davison, 20, of Burniston Drive, Billingham, was sentenced to six months in a young offenders’ institution for affray and handed a six-year football banning order.

His cousin Daryl Davison, 24, of Lomond Avenue, Billingham, was sentenced to two years in prison for violent disorder and given a nine-year banning order.

Patrick Hebblethwaite, 19, of Northallerton, was sentenced to nine months in a young offenders’ institution for affray and banned for nine years.

Jack Baker, 17, from York and Harry Gregory, 18, also from York, were both sentenced to 12 months in a young offenders’ institution for violent disorder and handed a nine-year ban.

Two Sheffield United fans were also found guilty of affray in connection with the incident in the beer garden. David Jones, 27, from Sheffield, was sentenced to 12-months imprisonment and given a six-year banning order.

The other man failed to appear at the hearing last Friday and will be sentenced at a later date.

DC Jamie Smith of Cleveland’s Football Banning Unit, said: “The sentences handed out should act as a warning to anyone thinking of getting involved in football violence or disorder.

“Most of those sentenced had no previous convictions, yet still received custodial sentences.

“The joint investigation between ourselves, South Yorkshire Police and North Yorkshire Police really has been successful as these banning orders are the toughest I’ve seen, demonstrating that violence at matches will not be tolerated, and should you get involved, you will be removed from the game.

“Whilst the vast majority of football supporters continue to behave well, those that do misbehave at football matches will be dealt with robustly.

“Youngsters drawn into this violent culture should think carefully about how much they love the game. A moment of gratuitous violence can result in a lengthy ban, so think carefully about your behaviour at matches.”

Utrecht football hooligans stand trial - 21/03/2012

Source : http://www.rnw.nl

Seventy-four supporters of FC Utrecht are on trial in their hometown of Utrecht on Wednesday. They have been charged with rioting after December’s match between FC Utrecht and FC Twente.

The accused will be tried in three separate sessions, in which they will appear before the judge in groups of four. The judge will immediately hand down his verdict. The proceedings will take place behind closed doors because a number of the accused are minors.

The 74 were tracked down on the basis of CCTV footage, which was shown on a number of television shows in which the police enlist the public's help to solve crimes.

The rioting started when supporters of the visiting FC Twente team began throwing fireworks at the FC Utrecht family section. Rioting then erupted outside the stadium. Regular police officers and riot police were pelted with fireworks, bicycles and rocks. A number of officers were injured and warning shots were fired to disperse the hooligans.

The FC Twente hooligans are to appear in court in Almelo soon.

Greece: Panathinaikos docked FIVE points after rioting fans fight with police - 23/03/2012

Source : http://www.dailymail.co.uk

Panathinaikos have been dealt the stiffest punishment in Greek Super League history after extreme violence between fans and police.
The league's disciplinary committee docked five points from the side and has forced them to play four games behind closed doors, as a punishment for the scenes which caused their derby match against Olympiakos at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday to be abandoned.
The league said the match would be recorded as a 3-0 loss for Panathinaikos who would also pay a fine of 252,500 euros (£210,894) for failing to maintain order at the game.

The club were deducted three points from this season's table and two points from next year's.
The strict penalties are part of a new sports law which the Greek government passed in February aiming to clamp down on football violence.
Panathinaikos have exercised their right to appeal and their case will be heard next week.

The violence at the Olympic Stadium, the ground which hosted the 2004 Olympics, was some of the worst seen in recent seasons.
The start of the second half was delayed by 45 minutes as fans pelted police with Molotov cocktails, flares and missiles, and the game was subsequently abandoned altogether with nine minutes remaining with Olympiakos 1-0 ahead.
Twenty police officers were injured and more than 50 arrests were made while three fire engines were called in to extinguish flames as hundreds of fans set alight sections of the stands.
Three of those arrested were charged with possession of explosives, police said.

The club had already been in trouble with the Super League's disciplinary committee this season for crowd violence and were forced to play one match behind closed doors earlier this month.
With five games remaining, Olympiakos now have an 10-point advantage and look odds-on to retain their Super League title, which would be their 39th.

No Olympiakos fans attended the game at Olympic Stadium in accordance with a league policy not to allow visiting fans due to fears of violence.
'We dedicated several thousand personnel to policing the game and we faced, beginning two hours before the game started, escalating attacks,' police spokesman Athanassios Kokalakis said.
Sports general secretary Panos Bitsaxis said on television that the state had taken 'the best possible security measures' and accused football clubs of doing nothing to curb the fanatical supporters and of opposing the state's attempts to impose tougher sanctions.

'The noise was so much that the players could not concentrate,' Olympiakos coach Ernesto Valverde said.
'We had been co-operating with the police for almost a month in preparation for the game,' league general manager Michalis Anagnostou said. 'The result was not what we wished for.'

Israel: Jerusalem Football Fans Beat Arabs in Riot - 19/03/2012

No Arrests Despite Video of 'Disgraceful' Rampage in Mall

Hundreds of supporters of Beitar Jerusalem football team assaulted Arab cleaning personnel at the capital’s Malha shopping center on Monday, in what was said to be one of Jerusalem’s biggest-ever ethnic clashes. “It was a mass lynching attempt,” said Mohammed Yusuf, a team leader for Or-Orly cleaning services.
Despite CCTV footage of the events, no one was arrested. Jerusalem police said that is because no complaint was filed. Witnesses said that after a soccer game in the nearby Teddy Stadium, hundreds of mostly teenage supporters flooded into the shopping center, hurling racial abuse at Arab workers and customers and chanting anti-Arab slogans, and filled the food hall on the second floor.
Shortly afterward, several supporters started harassing three Arab women, who sat in the food hall with their children. They verbally abused and spat on them.”
The attackers also asked Jewish shop owners for knives and sticks to serve as weapons but none consented, witnesses said. Avi Biton, Malha’s security director, sent a force of security guards in an attempt to restore order, but they were outnumbered. He called the police who arrived in large numbers about 40 minutes after the brawl started. At about 10.30 P.M., they evacuated the mall and the management shut its doors.
“I’ve been here for many years and I’ve never seen such a thing,” said Gideon Avrahami, Malha’s executive director. “It was a disgraceful, shocking, racist incident; simply terrible.”
