Celtic fined £21,000 by Uefa for fans' misbehaviour in Europa League - 28/03/2012
Source : http://www.guardian.co.uk
• Celtic punished over offensive banner and fireworks incident • Incidents occurred at Europa tie in Udinese in December
Celtic have been fined €25,000 (approx £21,000) for fans' misbehaviour in the Europa League game against Udinese in Italy last December, Uefa has confirmed.
After the 1-1 draw at the Stadio Friuli, the Parkhead club were charged with "the displaying of a banner of an offensive nature and the setting off of fireworks by supporters".
The decision to fine Celtic was made by Uefa's control and disciplinary body on 23 February.
A Uefa spokesperson said: "It is nothing out of the ordinary that it wasn't announced then. We can have 100 cases at the monthly meetings. Celtic did not appeal."
Some Celtic fans held aloft a two-part banner which insulted Uefa, days after the club were fined about £12,700 for "illicit chanting" involving pro-IRA songs at a Europa League game against Rennes at Celtic Park.
Several flares were also let off and one was thrown on to the pitchside track. Celtic banned for life one fan who was arrested in Italy over the alleged assault of a club steward, and who they say was one of those responsible for the banner.
The manager, Neil Lennon, and the chief executive, Peter Lawwell, hit out at the "rogue" element within their support on the day after the game.
The club also vowed to sift through photographic evidence to find those fans responsible for the use of the flares, warning that they will take "appropriate action".
Lawwell said: "It is very frustrating. Those people are not Celtic supporters. We will weed them out and these guys will not get back into Celtic Football Club.
"One or two silly little juvenile boys doing funny kids' pranks and stuff is bringing the whole of Scottish football down."
Lennon added: "My only surprise is that they got the spelling [on the banner] right. I am very disappointed, they have let me down, they have let the board, players and background staff down and 99.9% of the support down."

Millwall: Lions fan banned for 10 years - 26/03/2012
Source : http://www.thesun.co.uk
MILLWALL have banned a supporter for 10 YEARS for goading Leeds United fans with a Turkey flag at the New Den.
Leeds fans Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight were stabbed to death in Istanbul ahead of a UEFA Cup semi-final against Galatasaray in 2000.
And some sick Millwall yobs taunted opposition supporters with the Turkish flag during Saturday's 1-0 home defeat.
The Lions have worked tirelessly to keep thugs away from the club and they have confirmed the culprit who smuggled in the flag has been banned.
Club spokesman Deano Standing said: "The man concerned was apprehended after the match and is not welcome at our club for an entire decade. He has been banned.
"We worked so hard with Leeds to make sure this game passed off without trouble and it did — but the club does not condone the behaviour of a minority of the crowd.
"It is disappointing this person got into the stadium with the flag as there were checks in place.
"There is no place for that kind of thing at the Den."
Last April, the Championship side banned four supporters for waving Turkish flags in their 3-2 win over Leeds.
The South London club last week warned such flags were banned from being taken into the stadium ahead of Saturday's match.
But FA and police chiefs will be alarmed that one was being openly paraded on the terraces.
There were also sick chants of "always look out for Turks carrying knives" and "Istanbul" coming from the Millwall terraces.
A police spokesman said: "Millwall have banned a male for a considerable period of time for waving Turkish flag at visiting fans."

Angry Levski Sofia fans make point with road blockade
Levski Sofia players and coaches were rescued after angry fans threatened them following their second consecutive Bulgarian league defeat on Thursday, police said in a statement. Levski, considered as Bulgarian title favorites, lost 1-0 at champions Litex Lovech to lie fourth in the standings. Supporters were so disgusted by their team's performance that they set up a road blockade and tried to storm the club bus on the trip back to Sofia. Frustrated fans, who also threw stones, bottles and other objects onto the pitch during the tense game, were escorted away by police. Levski appointed Georgi Ivanov as coach on Tuesday, a day after Nikolay Kostov resigned after the surprising 1-0 home defeat by Minyor Pernik - Kostov's first league loss since he took over last November.

Israel: Jerusalem police arrest 16 football fans over racist attack - 30/03/2012
Source : http://sports.ndtv.com
Israeli police have arrested 16 suspects in connection with a racist attack by Jewish football fans on Arab cleaners at Jerusalem's main shopping centre, a spokesman said on Friday.
"Israeli police have until now arrested 16 suspects based on CCTV footage," Micky Rosenfeld told AFP.
"All of the suspects (were arrested) in connection with racial incitement."
He said 10 of them had been questioned and released pending the outcome of the investigation. The other six would appear before Jerusalem magistrates later on Thursday and police would ask they be remanded in custody.
The incident occurred on March 19 when Beitar Jerusalem fans flooded out of Teddy Stadium into the nearby Malcha mall and assaulted Arab employees, chanting "death to Arabs," according to media reports.
The first reports emerged only four days later in the left-leaning Haaretz newspaper, which said "hundreds" of fans were involved.
According to Haaretz, the fans spat on several Arab women sitting with their children and when Arab employees at the mall tried to intervene, they were assaulted.
Fans of Beitar Jerusalem, which has never had an Arab player, have long been associated with anti-Arab racism, and the team has been punished in the past for the behaviour of its supporters.Israeli police have arrested 16 suspects in connection with a racist attack by Jewish football fans on Arab cleaners at Jerusalem's main shopping centre, a spokesman said on Friday.

Cyprus: 15 football hooligans charged and released - 27/03/2012
Source : http://www.cyprus-mail.com
POLICE have arrested 15 football fans in connection with violence that broke out after a match between the youth teams of Nicosia rivals APOEL and Omonia on Sunday. The clashes resulted in five policemen being injured and hospitalised. The incidents came just two days after the two teams met in the championship on Friday, which again resulted in profound violence, when two Omonia fans were attacked in their car at GSP Stadium’s roundabout and almost set alight, when two APOEL fans on motorbikes threw a flare in the car window. This was after the car was completely smashed up with crowbars and bats. A police spokesman yesterday said that after Sunday’s match had finished, fans of one team started throwing stones onto the pitch – at GSP stadium’s practice areas – and then attacked two fans from the opposing team as they started to leave the stadium. As police attempted to intervene, the fans turned on them and started attacking the policemen with bats and stones. He said five police officers were injured and treated at Nicosia General Hospital. “One (policeman) had a fracture to his head and received stitches, the other has bruises and scratches, another has an injured arm, and another has an injured leg. The fifth officer is showing symptoms of sciatica,” said the police spokesman. Police reacted by securing a search warrant for the two teams’ fan clubs, which they followed through on Sunday night. They arrested 15 suspects from both teams, after finding seven bats, a spray and two helmets. The suspects were yesterday charged in writing and released, to attend court at a later date. Meanwhile, police yesterday said they were intensifying investigations to find the two motorcyclists responsible for the attack on the two Omonia fans on Friday. They said they were collecting evidence and interviewing people, to find the people who tried to burn the two fans alive. The two teams will meet again Saturday for the championship play-offs. The game will be played behind closed doors because Omonia, the home side, was punished for fan trouble in a previous fixture.

Historic Euroleague Final Eight derby marred by crowd trouble
Thursday’s game was a special event, with the country’s top two women’s basketball teams battling for survival on the European stage. The game itself was a thrilling event worthy of the country’s fiercest sports rivalry and it broke the Final Eight attendance record with 8,574 supporters at the Abdi İpekçi Arena, according to the organization’s website.
However, the positive spots were marred by crowd trouble between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe fans. Fireworks were lit and debris was thrown onto the court several times during the game, becoming all the more heated after the final buzzer.
The scenes were familiar for any sports event in which the two teams come face to face, but there have been efforts to prevented such events lately with strict rules. On a number of occasions in recent years no visiting fans have been allowed at matches between the two teams in the football league, and just small number of visitors have been allowed in to basketball and volleyball games. March 29 was an exception, as it was part of an international competition.
“It is usually said that everyone missed those days when the stadiums were filled by equal portions from each team,” NTV Spor basketball pundit İsmail Şenol said yesterday. “But after that game, we all saw that 50/50 fans are a distant dream for Turkish sports.”
Eurosport quoted Euroleague pundit Jeff Taylor as saying the game “came pretty close” to being halted due to the events.

ANOTHER FOOTBALL FAN SHOT DEAD IN BRAZIL
A football fan was killed in a weekend fight between rival groups in central Brazil, the fourth fatality resulting from fan violence in less than a month.
Authorities on Sunday said 23-year-old Diego Rodrigo Costa de Jesus died after being shot in the back during a confrontation between supporters from Goias and Vila Nova in the central city of Goiania on Saturday.
Two Palmeiras fans were killed last week in a fight at Sao Paulo, and a Guarani supporter died about two weeks ago about 100 kilometres away.
A series of incidents related to fan fighting at the beginning of 2012 had already raised concerns with Brazil hosting the 2014 World Cup. Fan violence had appeared to be mostly under control in the past few years but the recent surge has authorities scrambling to find solutions for the change.
Police in Rio detained 60 Botafogo fans who reportedly were waiting for buses carrying rival Fluminense fans near the Engenhao stadium, where the teams played on Sunday. The group, including about 10 minors, were carrying rocks and pieces of wood, according to police. The fan group was not allowed to enter the Engenhao.
In southern Brazil, a few supporters from Gremio and Pelotas invaded the field after the match and confronted each other and police, but no serious injuries were reported.
Sunday's death occurred in the same city where four Goias fans were wounded by gunshots in January. De Jesus was also a Goias supporter.
Authorities said Saturday's fight began when the rival groups ran into each other at a public park in Goiania. A Vila Nova fan reportedly was armed and started shooting, and de Jesus was hit while trying to run away. Police said de Jesus had a disability in one of his legs and was not able to flee with his colleagues.
Authorities detained seven people accused of participating in the fight on Saturday evening, but it wasn't clear if the suspected shooter was among those in custody.
Last Tuesday, 19-year-old Palmeiras supporter Guilherme Vinicius Jovanelli Moreira was declared brain dead after injuries sustained in a fight involving nearly 500 people just before a match between Palmeiras and Corinthians on March 25.
A day earlier, 21-year-old Palmeiras fan Andre Alves was buried after dying from a shot in the head in the same confrontation, which also left a 23-year-old shot in the hip a 17-year-old hospitalized with head injuries.
Police closed the headquarters of fan groups from Corinthians and Palmeiras and detained a few people suspected in participating in the fight. The fan groups also were prohibited from attending matches.
There hadn't been a death linked to fan violence in Brazil since early last year, when a Corinthians supporter was killed after reportedly being ambushed by Palmeiras fans. Police believe last weekend's fight came in retaliation for that death.
About two weeks ago, a 28-year-old fan of small club Guarani died from head injuries after fighting with Ponte Preta supporters in the city of Campinas.
Fan groups from the top Sao Paulo state clubs -- Palmeiras, Corinthians, Sao Paulo and Santos -- have been involved in several incidents before matches this year, but there have been recent problems in other parts of the country too.
In addition to the four Goias fans wounded in a shooting in January, other four were shot after a fight that left 80 people detained in Rio de Janeiro late last year, and there were also confrontations between rival groups in the northeastern state of Bahia.
Another death related to fan violence in Brazil occurred in November 2010, when a 19-year-old Cruzeiro fan was repeatedly beaten with iron bars during a brawl between dozens of rival fans in Belo Horizonte.
