Hull City fans sentenced over Barnsley violence - 20/09/2011
Source : Thisishullandeastriding.co.uk
NINE Hull City fans were involved in violent clashes which saw hundreds of pounds of damage caused to a social club.
They clashed with opposition supporters before and after Hull City's away game at Barnsley last year.
The Harborough Hill Working Men's Club, which had been designated for away fans, suffered a significant amount of damage before the game.
More violence continued in Barnsley town centre after the final whistle.
Ten people were arrested after the match on October 30 last year, which ended in a 1-1 draw. South Yorkshire Police caught the men following an 11-month investigation.
The Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Alan Goldsack QC, yesterday sentenced five of the offenders at Sheffield Crown Court.
Leon Plattern-Morton, 18, of Tilbury Road, west Hull, was sentenced to eight months in a young offenders institute after admitting affray.
Joe Mains, 20, of Seymour Road, Keyingham, was sentenced to six months in a young offenders institute after he pleaded guilty to affray.
Tom Holtby, 18, of East Field Farm, Aaram, near Beverley, was given a 26-week prison sentence, suspended for two years, for affray. He was also ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work in the community.
Steffan Radley, 18, of Goddard Avenue, west Hull, and Jamie Yates, 18, of Perth Street, west Hull, were given 12-month community orders and 100 hours' unpaid work after pleading guilty to a public order offence.
Two 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old from Hull, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have been sent to youth court to be sentenced for affray and public order offences.
None of them were given football banning orders by the judge, but South Yorkshire Police are considering imposing civil banning orders on them, which would bar them from attending matches.
A ninth Hull City fan, Colin Campbell, 41, received a caution for chanting.
Only one Barnsley supporter was charged.
Richard Burroughs, 24, of Barnsley, was given a 16-week prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, and a three-year football banning order for a public order offence.
South Yorkshire Police pulled together a team of officers to investigate the disorder.
Superintendent David Hartley, policing lead in Barnsley, previously told the Mail: "We began an investigation immediately and have been working closely with our colleagues in Humberside and both football clubs in a bid to identify those involved.
"There is no place in football for this sort of behaviour."

Sweden: AIK Solna - Djurgården - 20/09/2011
Source : Thelocal.se
Football fans stage silent derby protest
The Stockholm derby match between Djurgården and AIK began in deathly silence on Monday evening as fans from both sides staged a protest at all they consider to have gone wrong with game.
For ten long minutes Råsunda football stadium in Solna held an eerie silence as the over 24,000 paying spectators from the bitter rival clubs sought to demonstrate the massive contribution fans make to football.
AIK's supporters club Black Army explained the reasons behind the protest in a comment on their website:
"The stands will be quiet in order to demonstrate the importance of a vibrant and positive terrace culture and to protest against those who want to hurt football and its audience."
The Black Army identified a list of perceived threats to the game including "collective punishment" and "policy decisions which threaten the rule of law" which they argued displayed an "unacceptable attitude to Swedish supporters".
The media are furthermore blamed for "distasteful headlines" and "general hunting of fans" and argued that Swedish football is threatened if "the footballing public continues to be seen as a problem instead of an asset".
Once the ten minutes were up the match reverted to the cacophony of sound and chanting that is expected of a derby between clubs at opposite ends of the Allsvenska table as the closing stages of the season approach.
The first half took an unexpected turn as Kennedy Igboananike scored in the 20th minute to give Djurgården the lead.
After the half-time break supporters from both teams showed a less savoury side of "terrace culture" in Swedish football when they lit a slew of firecrackers and flares, forcing the referee to interrupt the match and pull the teams off the pitch.
The players remained in the changing-rooms for some seven minutes before resuming a hard fought battle that produced no further goals and left AIK's hopes of winning the championship effectively in tatters.
For Djurgården the win was a huge step towards securing their top flight status for a further season and with fellow Stockholm club Hammarby languishing at the bottom of Swedish football's second tier, ensuring a Stockholm derby in 2012.
Stockholm police reported that almost 90 supporters were detained in connection with the match with two arrested for aggravated assault.

Suffolk Police 'sorry' for Norwich City fans missing match start - 21/09/2011
Source : BBC NEWS
Suffolk Police have apologised to Norwich City fans after 400 supporters missed the kick-off of a match against Ipswich Town.
The fans missed the first goal of the match in April due to perceived threats from Ipswich fans outside the ground.
A police review said officers made "a genuine mistake of advising them of an apparent delayed kick-off".
It said a number of fans were held back before the game while the road outside the ground was cleared of home fans.
The derby match at Portman Road had been played on a Sunday lunchtime for 13 years until last season when it took place on Thursday, 21 April - the evening before Good Friday.
'Cynical view' Suffolk Police said there were 19 arrests and 13 people were ejected from the ground.
The police force has declined to make its report available to the BBC.
Kathy Blake, secretary of the Norwich City Independent Supporters' Association, who was with the visiting fans, said she "welcomes the police apology".
"But I tend to be a bit cynical and think it's a PR exercise because they said at the time the operation was a great success," she said.
"The fans were rightly aggrieved by the delay because they missed the first goal."
The report's main recommendation was that "a larger number of specially-trained officers should be deployed".
With the clubs in different divisions this season, there are no more derby games scheduled.

Leeds United - Manchester United - Carling Cup - 20/09/2011
Source : BBC NEWS
Police condemn 'shocking' violence
Police have described violence at Tuesday night's Carling Cup match between Leeds United and Manchester United at Elland Road as "shocking".
Two police officers were injured and 24 people were arrested as trouble flared.
Both officers were taken to hospital, one with a broken leg and the other with a foot injury before the match.
West Yorkshire Police said they were working with Leeds United to identify those involved in the violence and expected to make "many more" arrests.
During the disorder, missiles were hurled at police and a male fan was assaulted and knocked unconscious.
CCTV footage
Supt Vernon Francis, from West Yorkshire Police, described the violence as "shocking and surprising".
He said police were about to begin searching a "wealth" of CCTV footage taken during the trouble.
Police had earlier said that a Galatasaray flag was displayed by Manchester United fans during the game, a reference to the deaths of two Leeds fans in Istanbul 11 years ago.
There were also reports of chanting by Leeds United fans about the Munich air disaster in 1958 when seven Manchester United players died.
One Leeds United fan, who attended the game, said: "At kick-off the Manchester fans unfurled a huge banner with the word Istanbul on it.
"Now instead of being ashamed to be a Leeds United fan, I am ashamed to be a football fan.
She added: "I am disgusted at the whole affair. It spoils the game I love and for so many others like me."
MP 'appalled' Leeds North East MP Fabian Hamilton said he was appalled by the evening's event.
He said: "I'm quite disgusted, the idea of chanting about the deaths of those two men at Galatasaray 11 years ago is sickening.
"The families must be appalled as well as the other fans."
Mr Hamilton said police should make more use of banning orders to stop offensive chanting.
He said: "I think the police need to use the banning orders that are already possible. I think the best deterrent would be a ban for life."
And he said attacks on police or other football fans was wrong. "The violence was absolutely unacceptable," he said.
Dave Gaertner, from Leeds United Supporters Club, said the behaviour was "totally wrong".
He said: "It's not the first time the Munich song for want of a better phrase has been sung by a small element of the Leeds United supporters.
"I think to mock people that have died because of football is totally wrong and it goes too far."
Hundreds of West Yorkshire Police officers were on patrol for the game in an effort to keep trouble to a minimum.
The injured officers were hurt in an incident prior to the match with further trouble erupting when the game ended 3-0 to Manchester United.

Two police officers injured and 21 fans arrested at Leeds v Manchester United Carling Cup match
Two police officers were injured and 21 arrests made when trouble marred Manchester United's Carling Cup match in Leeds last night.
Both officers were taken to hospital, one with a broken leg and the other with a foot injury, before the Carling Cup clash at Elland Road.
One fan was also assaulted and knocked unconscious.
Most of the trouble flared when United's travelling support was being escorted to the ground.
Bricks and bottles were hurled close to the entrances of the South Stand, where Reds fans were seated.
The arrests were made for public order offences.
United romped to a 3-0 victory over their old foes from the other side of the Pennines.
But the match was marred by offensive chants from fans of both sides inside and outside the ground.
Leeds fans made airplane gestures and sang songs about the Munich Air Disaster while United fans unfurled a banner reading 'Istanbul' - a sick reference to an incident when two Leeds fans were stabbed to death in the Turkish city before a European game.
One fan who was at the match said: "Both sets of supporters were at it. The 'Munich' chants came from Leeds fans at the side of the United section.
"The 'Istanbul' banner appeared straight after kick-off. I'm not sure if it was then confiscated but it didn't reappear.
"Through the game their were chants from United fans of 'Always look out for Turks carrying knives', and 'Where were you in istanbul?"
West Yorkshire Police deployed hundreds of officers for the match because of fears that the historic rivalry between the two clubs would spill over into violence.

Turkey: Fenerbahçe - Manisaspor - 20/09/2011

Fenerbahçe's jailed chairman grateful for female fans
Fenerbahçe President Aziz Yıldırım, who is currently in prison as part of a major match-fixing investigation, has thanked female fans who filled Fenerbahçe's Şükrü Saraçoğlu Stadium on Tuesday for showing their support for their team.
As a result of new rules approved by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), which say only women and children under the age of 12 will be admitted to games, for free, played by teams that have been sanctioned for the unruly behavior of their fans, tens of thousands of enthusiastic Fenerbahçe female fans and young boys filled the stadium in Kadıköy to watch the Fenerbahçe-Manisaspor Spor Toto Super League week three match on Tuesday night.
Impressed by the scene, the club's jailed chairman released a statement for the team's female fans, saying while watching the match he felt the support of all Fenerbahçe fans. “I saw the long queues you waited in to get a ticket. I saw the young people, children and women donning the team's colors. I heard you all saying Fenerbahçe and I felt your great support for Fenerbahçe. I thank our fans for allowing me to feel these feelings,” he said in the message, which was posted online on Fenerbahçe's website.
Yıldırım is a major suspect in the match-fixing investigation, which concerns claims that some club officials and footballers had rigged games in the Spor Toto Super League as well as the Bank Asya League 1. In July, police raided homes and football club premises, detaining some 60 people suspected of fixing football matches in the two leagues last season.
Many high-ranking football officials from various Turkish clubs, including Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş, have been arrested on charges of fraud and match-fixing. A total of 31 individuals, including agents, former footballers and club managers, were arrested in two waves of arrest in the probe, with Fenerbahçe Chairman Yıldırım being the highest profile figure taken into custody as of yet.
