Police arrest 12 fans during Birmingham City's match against Millwall at St Andrew's
A DOZEN arrests were made yesterday as Birmingham City beat Millwall at St Andrew’s.
But West Midlands Police said the game passed largely without incident.
A police spokesman revealed that six Millwall and six home supporters were arrested for public disorder and alcohol-related offences before, during and after the match at St Andrew’s, which Birmingham City won 3-0.
And he said that two police officers were treated for slight injuries at the ground.
A total of 17,901 home and 1,064 away fans attended the game.
The police helicopter was heard overhead before and after the 90 minutes. Match commander Chief Insp Ian Marsh said: “There was an effective policing operation put into place before, during and after the match.
“That meant that officers were able to deal quickly with any of the minor offences that took place.
“The small number of offences were caused by a very small number of fans from either side.
“The majority of fans who attended did so with good intentions and were there to enjoy the match.”
There had been concern that the game might attract trouble because Millwall fans have a history of hooliganism.

Poland ready to tackle football hooligans - 12/09/2011
Source : CNN
In preparation for co-hosting next summer's Euro 2012 football championship, Poland has been transforming itself. With help from EU funding, new airports, roads and impressive stadia are all set to be completed well in time before the first match kicks off in Warsaw on June 8. From the infrastructure to the event itself, organizers are now focusing on the matches that will be played in four of Poland's cities. "Now we are looking at organizational issues and the most important in that is safety. Poland is not more dangerous than other European countries, "said Adam Giersz, Poland's Minister for Sport and Tourism. Great strides have been made in eradicating violence and hooliganism from football matches across Europe, but it remains a concern and on-going problem in many countries, including Poland. The Polish Cup final in May between Legia Warsaw and Lech Poznan was marred by violent scenes and UEFA, European football's governing body, warned the Polish Football Association after hooliganism during the country's international match against Lithuania in March. However new laws on assembly and who can enter stadia were passed earlier this year and led to numerous arrests. "They are already frightened because they were already arrested," said Gronkiewicz-Waltz, Warsaw's mayor. "They were punished, some of the leaders were already punished by the courts and so I think (Euro 2012) will be ok." Poland has looked to the UK for examples of how to improve safety around football matches. "Our new safety law is based on the British system," said Giersz referring to the way English football clubs and UK government enacted numerous measures to remove a violent minority from attending football matches. "The main points are to get rid of anonymity. Everyone at the stadium must be recognized by name and surname." It is hoped that the face-recognition technology being trialed that can identify banned hooligans will be ready in time for the competition and augment other security measures, such security cameras and restricting access around stadia to ticket-holders. The country will be under the spotlight in June, but many believe the planning and measures taken by Poland's government and the event's organizers will leave a positive legacy. "I think new the stadiums in themselves will create more interest in football," said Krzysztof Dowhan, coach of Legia Warsaw. "Fans will be able to enjoy the sport in more comfortable surroundings. Also I think more players from abroad will come to play in Poland which will in turn raise the standard of our game."

Besiktas tells fans not to stir up trouble - 14/09/2011
Source : SI.com
Turkish police are taking measures to counter protests, including possible plans to invade the pitch, during a politically charged Europa League match between Besiktas and Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv. Thursday's match in Istanbul comes amid deepening tensions between the two countries after Israel refused to apologize for a raid on a Gaza-bound ship last year that killed nine activists, prompting Turkey to expel top Israeli diplomats, cut military ties with the country and vow to send navy vessels to escort aid ship in the future. Israel has defended its raid on the flotilla, saying its troops were defending themselves against activists who attacked them as they boarded. The Turkish government has assured Maccabi of its safety, rejecting calls for the game to be played at a neutral venue. The Israeli team arrived at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport under tight security Wednesday with riot police lining an exit at the airport to form a corridor between the terminal and a team bus. Police also stopped traffic to allow the bus to travel, the state-run Anatolia news agency said. CNN-Turk television said about 5,000 officers have been assigned to police the game and protect the Israeli players and dozens of traveling fans. The Israeli armed forces have authorized Maccabi players currently carrying out their military service to travel to Istanbul for the game, Maccabi said. There had been reports those players would not be allowed to travel to Turkey for security reasons. "Politics and football should not be mixed,'' Maccabi coach Mordehay Iwanir said. "We have no concerns about being here. We have no fear.'' Israel's Yediot Ahronot newspaper described a stands for the 100 or so Maccabi fans expected to attend the game as a "cage'' and said the Turkish security forces would not allow any interaction between the fans. Turkey is eager to avoid a repeat of a European Cup basketball game between Bnei Hasharon and Turk Telekom in Ankara in 2009, when the Israeli team was forced to flee to the locker room as hundreds of fist-pumping and chanting Turkish fans pelted them with bottles, protesting an Israeli ground offensive in Gaza. The game was postponed because the Israeli team did not return to the court. In a statement issued Wednesday, Besiktas said police were taking measures to thwart protests that were being organized on social networking websites, including a possible pitch invasion. The statement came after Besiktas officials late Tuesday held a meeting with police and the Istanbul's governor's office to coordinate security ahead of the game. "Both (Besiktas) and the Istanbul Police Department officials are closely watching these and taking the necessary measures,'' the club said. Besiktas called on fans to show the Israelis hospitality that is often touted as a characteristic trait of the Turkish people, and warned that the club could face punishment by UEFA for any unruly fan behavior. "We see (the game) as an opportunity for our fans, who are known to be gentlemanly and loyal to the spirit of fair play, to once again display their hospitality,'' the club said. "It is the great Besiktas fans' duty to avoid certain actions that may cause our club to be sanctioned by the UEFA. "The fans should merely support our club in an impassioned manner.'' Turkish-Israeli relations hit a new low earlier this month when a U.N. report into the Israeli raid said the country's naval blockade of Gaza was a "legitimate security measure,'' but also called the raid on the flotilla that tried to break the blockade "excessive and unreasonable.'' Turkey rejected the report, saying it does not recognize the blockade's legitimacy. It said ties with Israel would not return to their normal level until Israel apologizes, compensates the victims' families and lifts the blockade of Gaza. Last week, Israel expressed regret for the loss of lives and said it was time for the two countries to restore their former ties. Turkey took strict security measures during last year's European Volleyball League tournament and closed a game between Turkey and Israel to the public. A small group of protesters were stopped by police two blocks away from the venue as they voiced anger over Israel's May 31 raid on the Gaza-bound flotilla. Before another volleyball match between Israel and Serbia during the tournament in July, protesters scuffled with police, pounding police shields with Palestinian flags. In previous years, an Egyptian football player assaulted an Israeli player during a league match in Turkey.

Fifteen fans arrested at Old Firm game
Fifteen supporters were arrested at this weekend’s Old Firm clash between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox.
Strathclyde Police Assistant Chief Constable Campbell Corrigan said the policing operation was "straightforward" and that the "vast majority" of the 50,000 crowd behaved sensibly.
He said: "Supporters did not engage in sectarian singing however the behaviour of a few was unacceptable and as a result 15 people were arrested for a range of offences including four for alleged sectarian offences. The arrests took place in and around the stadium."
The arrests came as MSPs considering legislation to tackle hate crime, including sectarianism, attended the match to understand the issues police face on the frontline. Among those at the game, which Rangers won 4-2, was Holyrood's Justice Committee convenor Christine Grahame.
She said: "I think what perhaps concerns me is the funding and resources that have to go into this, because there are over 300 police here today, and we believe there are around 500 stewards. I have been very impressed with the containment. There are searches done in advance, but they are done discreetly.
"I think what I am concerned about now to look at is when the fans leave the stadium and go elsewhere, and certainly when they were coming towards the stadium. I think we are going to listen and see what the transport police have to say."
The committee has already heard evidence from security chiefs at both Rangers and Celtic as well as Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland, fans, pundits and academics.
