India: Football match sparks violence; One killed, 15 injured - 23/08/2009

Source: http://blog.taragana.com/sports/2009/08/23/football-match-sparks-violence-one-killed-15-injured-22272/

football match exploded into blasts and violence, causing death of a person, when members of a defeated side opened fire and hurled bombs on the ground in the north eastern fringes of the city Sunday, police said.

“One person was killed when the miscreants fired. At least 15 others were injured,” Deputy Inspector General of police (Presidency Range) S.N. Gupta told reporters.

Enraged over the death, a mob set fire to a resort ‘Vedic Village’ in the vicinity, alleging that the attackers had taken shelter there.

Ten fire tenders have been rushed to douse the fire and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) deployed, Gupta said.

The incident occurred after one of the participating teams could not stomach their defeat in the tournament semi-final, and led by some miscreants came back to the ground and started firing and hurling bombs indiscrimately.

Senior police officers have gone to the troubled area, he said.

Ban warning to football hooligans - 21/08/2009

Source: http://www.whitbygazette.co.uk/news/Ban-warning-to-football-hooligans.5573076.jp

ANYONE from the Whitby area receiving a Football Banning Order this season will not be able to actively support England and Wales if they qualify for the World Cup finals in South Africa next year, said Robert Turnbull, Chief Crown Prosecutor for North Yorkshire.
The Crown Prosecution Service and the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) in collaboration with the Home Office, the Football Association and the Professional Footballer’s Association are committed to operate a robust prosecution policy for football related offences during the next season and beyond.

Mr Turnbull said: “As well as talking violence, disorder and criminal damage, we will deal seriously with offences of racist indecent chanting and other types of hate crime and will apply for a Football Banning Order for those guilty of ticket touting.

“Members of the community whose homes and businesses are close to football grounds and well-behaved fans have the right not to have their lives disrupted by football hooliganism.”

Each CPS area has a lead football prosecutor dealing with Premiership and Football League Clubs who works closely with their police counterparts to tackle football-related violence and hooliganism.

This effective system was praised by the South African Assistant Commissioner Ben Groenewald who said when he attended the first CPS football Conference in April, that he would be interested to implement the same scheme for the South African World Cup in 2010.

Many Hajduk fans banned from entering the EU for five years - 18/08/2009

Source: http://www.croatiantimes.com/news/Sports/2009-08-18/5507/Many_Hajduk_fans_banned_from_entering_the_EU_for_five_years

Two hundred and ten Hajduk Split football fans from the Torcida fan club have been banned from entering the European Union for five years.

The banned fans were arrested during a clash with policemen before the Hajduk-Zilina game on 30 July in Bratislava.

The fan club said today (Tues) it would appeal the ban. It has a lawyer but not the 25,000 Euros necessary for a lawsuit.

The club has decided to collect the money and has set up a stand on Marmontova Street in the city centre where Split residents can donate money.

The club claims it has city residents’ support and hopes it will collect enough money for a lawsuit.

Dinamo Bucharest - Slovan Liberec - UEFA - 20/08/2009

Source : EarthTimes + gsp.ro

Dinamo Bucharest face sanctions over crowd trouble

Dinamo Bucharest face sanctions from football's European governing body UEFA after fans forced their Europa League play-off match on Thursday evening to be abandoned. UEFA said Friday it had ordered Dinamo Bucharest to appear before a disciplinary panel on Tuesday.

Romanian football federation officials said they feared the club could be banned from European competition for several years, a penalty which could lead to the club's financial ruin.

Dinamo were trailing 2-0 at home to Czech side Slovan Liberec in the play-off first-leg tie when supporters tried to invade the pitch in the 88th minute.

The fans had broken through security fencing, forcing Austrian referee Thomas Einwaller to abandon the match.

Tuesday's disciplinary panel comes two days before the scheduled return leg in Liberec. A UEFA official said the disciplinary panel could decide to let the 2-0 result stand or impose a heavier defeat on Dinamo.

Dinamo fans fined for their behaviour during a Europa League match

Four Dinamo supporters have been fined and two of them banned from all stadiums for a year in the wake of the Europa League match between Dinamo and Czech team Slovan Liberec.

Police are continuing their investigation in an attempt to use videos from surveillance cameras to identify fans who broke through fences and entered the track surrounding the stadium in the 87th minute of yesterday (Thurs) evening’s game.

UEFA has announced it will decide on Dinamo Bucharest's punishment for its fans’ behaviour next Tuesday. The club may be banned from European competition for up to three years.

Dinamo was losing to Slovan Liberec by a score of 0-2 when Austrian referee Thomas Einwaller halted play in the 88th minute at Catalin Haldan stadium.

Images issued over station clash - 25/08/2009

Source : BBC NEWS

Images have been released of men suspected of being involved in a clash between football fans and police at Newcastle railway station.

Trouble broke-out as officers carried out an operation to prevent a pre-arranged fight between Newcastle and Sunderland hooligans on 8 August.

Police had met hundreds of Sunderland fans at the station as they travelled home from a friendly game in Scotland.

Some fans have accused police of being heavy-handed during the operation.

The Football Supporters' Federation has called on Gary Garland, IPCC commissioner for the North East, to resign over a decision not to investigate police behaviour during the clash.

The men featured in the CCTV stills were among the Sunderland supporters who arrived at the station.

Ch Supt Neil Mackay, of Northumbria Police, said: "A criminal investigation is under way to identify the main offenders from both the Newcastle and Sunderland groups and ensure that action is taken against them.

"We've already identified a number of people involved in the disorder and are studying CCTV and video footage so we can trace all those involved."

Rotterdam bans free dance parties for two years - 25/08/2009

Source : Expatica Netherlands

Following the dance party at Hook of Holland which left one dead and six injured, Rotterdam mayor has banned free large-scale dance parties.

The mayor of Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb, has banned free large-scale dance parties in his city for the next two years.

The decision was prompted by the violence at a dance party at the Sunset Grooves beach in Hook of Holland on Saturday, during which guns were drawn and a 19-year-old man was shot dead.

Out of six others who were injured, three remain hospitalised.

It is not known whether this decision will also apply to events already scheduled to take place.

In a letter to the city council, Aboutaleb said there were around 12 separate shooting incidents at the event.

While it remains unclear how the fighting started and who the gunmen were, sources within the police force suggested the police themselves may have been the only ones firing guns at the party.

A film clip on Youtube shows four men drawing weapons. Witnesses claimed they were plain-clothes policemen who felt threatened when their identities were exposed by a large group of partygoers including football hooligans. They allegedly fired shots into the air first and aimed at specific people.

A spokesperson for the public prosecutor's office said the ongoing investigation will take into account this version of the story but does not rule out other evidence that suggests other people may have fired first.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the police union ACP, Gerrit van de Camp, has called for an investigation into whether the organisers did enough to prevent the violence.

He added some officers estimated the crowd to be between 40,000 and 50,000 people present, while the permit was for 25,000.

Both the police and the organisers knew that football hooligans were planning to go to the party. The organisers say they could do nothing since it was a free event.

Mo more large-scale beach parties at Hook of Holland

The chairman of the local council, Paddy Roomer, has announced in a radio interview that Hook of Holland will not be issuing permits for any more large-scale beach parties. "I have to take responsibility and say: this will never happen again."

Aboutaleb also announced an investigation into the increasing violence at music events and football matches.

Speaking at a press conference, Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb said it was "a shocking incident with a tragic outcome" while socialist party MP Ronald van Raak commented: "Alcohol makes people aggressive and then there's no reasoning with them."

UEFA punishes Dinamo for fans´ violent behaviour - 25/08/2009

Source : Romanian Times

Romanian football club FC Dinamo Bucharest has wound up losing its 20 August match with Czech club Slovan Liberec by a score of 0-3.

UEFA’s Control and Disciplinary Body ruled today (Tues) that the match, which had been halted in the 88th with the Czech team ahead by a score of 2-0, should be recorded as having ended with a score of 3-0.

The body thereby punished Dinamo for its fans’ violent behaviour during the match. Dinamo will face Slovan Liberec again on 27 August in Europa League play-offs, and the extra goal in the Czech club’s favour could be a factor in determining which team will move on.

UEFA also ruled Dinamo will have to play its next three home games in European competition in an empty stadium and pay a 50,000 Euro fine.

Dinamo may appeal the decisions within three days.

UEFA could have banned Dinamo from European competition for up to three years.

West Ham UTD - Millwall FC - Carling Cup - 25/08/2009

Source : SKY NEWS

One Stabbed In London Derby Footie Violence

One person has been stabbed when hundreds of Millwall and West Ham fans clashed in organised violence after a local derby.

At least three people were taken to hosptal and several others were injured during "planned" violence inside and outside West Ham's Upton Park.

Trouble initially erupted outside the east London stadium, ahead of the Carling Cup game.

Onlookers said Green Street, where the stadium's main gate is located, was filled with several hundred West Ham and Millwall fans before the match.

They said bottles and bricks started being hurled shortly after 6pm.

A 29-year-old man, who runs a kebab shop in Green Street said: "All hell broke loose, it was very frightening. It's not every day you see stuff like that.

"There were West Ham fans on one side and Millwall on the other. They were being kept apart by the police. There were West Ham fans for as far as you could see along the street.

"Bottles and bricks were being thrown from the back and some were hitting West Ham fans at the front. There were loads of people with blooded faces."

Inside the stadium, pockets of violence also broke out. Some supporters made it on to the pitch.

The rival fans taunted one another as news of the fighting outside filtered through.

Several people were arrested in the unrest outside. Police said the disorder was caused by people without tickets who had planned to start trouble.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said more officer reinforcements were called to the scene.

"There is large-scale trouble involving hundreds of fans which we are dealing with at the moment," he added.

A number of arrests were made for disorder and breaches of banning orders outside the game.

A 44-year-old man was stabbed in the chest in Priory Road, close to the stadium.

He is in a stable condition in hospital, and police said the attack was linked to the disorder.

Another man is believed to have been stabbed at a pub while another man was taken to hospital with head injuries.

Sky's home affairs correspondent Mark White said police described the violence as "serious" and "organised".

He added: "They were always aware that any game between West Ham and Millwall is what they describe as a high-risk game.

"There is a history of trouble between these rival sets of supporters so there would be more officers at this match than other lower risk games that are taking place.

"We are told that because of the organised nature of this, the violence was serious.

"And some fans outside the ground have described it as some of the most serious trouble they have seen between these two sets of supporters for some time."

Hunt For Hooligans After Riot Erupts At Game

Police are scouring CCTV footage as they hunt for hooligans who rioted at a football match, leaving three people seriously injured.

A man was stabbed in the chest and two others were taken to hospital in what police described as "large-scale" violence which broke out between rival West Ham and Millwall fans.

At least 10 people were arrested.

The trouble erupted before, during and after last night's game at Upton Park in east London.

The FA has condemned the violence and says the culprits should be banned from football for life.

Fans began to clash outside the stadium shortly after 6pm, lobbing bricks and bottles and starting small fires as police tried to intervene.

Inside the ground, fans fought with police and stewards and play was suspended when scores of supporters invaded the pitch.

A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said officers were now scanning CCTV footage to identify those behind the clashes.

Describing the ugly scenes, a 29-year-old man, who runs a kebab shop in Green Street said: "All hell broke loose, it was very frightening. It's not every day you see stuff like that.

"There were West Ham fans on one side and Millwall on the other. They were being kept apart by the police. There were West Ham fans for as far as you could see along the street.

"Bottles and bricks were being thrown from the back and some were hitting West Ham fans at the front.

"There were loads of people with bloodied faces."

He said he closed his shop for two hours as the violence flared. He added that the clashes continued after the match kicked off.

Another man, aged 19, who did not want to be named, said: "People were chipping bricks off buildings and throwing them at police. I saw one officer getting kicked as he was on the ground."

One fan said he saw about 30 police with shields and batons "storm" towards the Boleyn pub near the ground.

He said the night "seemed to belong to another era".

The Football Association vowed to investigate the violence and said anyone involved would be banned from football for life. "They have no place in our game," said a spokesman."

There is bitter rivalry between West Ham and Millwall supporters.

But West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola said: "Here, I've played seven years and I've never seen it like this. It's certainly not good for football. I was completely shocked."

Millwall boss Kenny Jackett added: "There were no Millwall fans on the pitch. They stayed where they were supposed to.

"I wasn't aware of the stabbing outside the ground. I'm very sad to hear that.

"We've got a passionate game in this country, but when it oversteps the mark then things have to be done."

Fan stabbed as hundreds of hooligans riot at match between Millwall and West Ham

A football fan was stabbed during vicious clashes between hundreds of rival fans at a match between Millwall and West Ham last night.

At least 10 people were arrested after bitter rivalry between the two clubs notorious for hooliganism sparked clashes before, during and after the game.

The Carling Cup match had to be suspended when scores of supporters invaded the pitch at Upton Park in east London and bricks and bottles were thrown at officials and police.

The 44-year-old was stabbed in the chest just yards from the West Ham ground and is today in a stable condition in hospital.

Two other fans had to be taken to hospital for treatment to less serious injuries after what police called 'large-scale' violence.

Officers and football club officials are now scouring CCTV footage to try and pick out those responsible, who face being banned from matches for life.

Millwall and West Ham have one of the longest-standing rivalries in English football but have rarely been in the same division and have not played each other since 2005.

One West Ham fan said the violent scenes 'seemed to belong to another era'.

Up to 1,000 riot police battled to contain the clashes when the fighting started shortly after 6pm as thousands of fans made their way to the ground.

Trouble flared before the match began at 7.45pm as fans started punching each other and throwing bricks and bottles.

John Whittingham, 35, a caretaker who lives near the ground, said: 'There were lots of scuffles and fights before the game. I saw a couple of people with bloody faces.

'People were throwing bricks but I haven't got a clue where they were finding them. Some people were trying to rip bollards off the pavement. There were also some fires lit.'

Tensions then completely boiled over as West Ham took the lead in extra time and around 60 fans ran on to the pitch.

One Millwall fan said: 'It was like a war zone outside the stadium. I brought my kids with me and they've seen some violence that is indescribable.'

Among the spectators in the ground was actress Jaime Winstone, engaged to Lily Allen's brother Alfie.

Miss Allen begged on social-networking website Twitter: 'Millwall-WestHam, stop fighting, my Jaime is there. If anything happens to her... I don't know, just stop it!'

Police and stewards had battled to keep the two sets of fans apart during the game as they taunted one another as news of the fighting outside filtered through.

But when the game ended, hundreds of fan invaded the pitch again and had to be forcibly removed.

A 56-year-old man said: 'There were a lot of lunatics around. The thing is, between these two sets of fans, it's hatred. The teams haven't played each other for so long so I suppose it was always going to kick off.'

The manager of a nearby kebab shop said: 'All hell broke loose, it was very frightening. It's not every day you see stuff like that. There were West Ham fans on one side and Millwall on the other. They were being kept apart by the police.

'There were West Ham fans for as far as you could see along the street. Bottles and bricks were being thrown from the back and some were hitting West Ham fans at the front. There were loads of people with blooded faces.'

A Football Association spokesman said: 'We absolutely condemn all of the disorder that has occurred at Upton Park this evening both inside and outside of the ground.

'We will be working with all parties, including the police and clubs, to establish the facts surrounding tonight's events. We strongly expect all culprits to be banned from football for life. They have no place in our game.'

West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola also spoke of his shock, saying: 'It's certainly not good for football. I was completely shocked. Totally. I knew it was a game that meant a lot for the two sets of supporters, but I didn't imagine it like this.

'What can I say? I'm a sport man. I love the game. I love to go on the pitch and try and make it exciting for the supporters and enjoyable for everybody to watch. This was beyond my powers.'

Millwall boss Kenny Jackett added: 'There were no Millwall fans on the pitch. They stayed where they were supposed to. There were a lot of people on the pitch. The lads gathered together and came to the sides, as they should have.

'I wasn't aware of the stabbing outside the ground. I'm very sad to hear that. We've got a passionate game in this country, but when it oversteps the mark then things have to be done.'

The clashes are the worst violence between the clubs for decades. Formed by rival dockers in London's East End in the late 19th century, the two have long been known for their rivalry.

Slavija fans afraid to spend the night in Serbia - 26/08/09

Source: blic.rs

Fans of Slavija Prague who are traveling to tomorrows UEFA League qualifications game against Red Star are afraid to spent night in Serbian capitol Belgrade.

Out of fear for their safety they will spend the night in Hungary and they will arrive to Red Star stadium “Marakana” just before the kick off. Slavija has asked of Serbian police to escort the 2 buses with about 80 Slavija fans the moment they cross the border. FC Slavija management and Czech media are afraid that Delije might launch the revenge attack on Slavija fans because of the last weeks police intervention in Prague before the first game of 4th leg qualifications.

- We are preparing directions for them, in order to know how to conduct in Belgrade. They should refrain from any political declaration. It would be best if they would put on Slavija shirts when they arrive to the stadium. - said the new Slavija PR Ondřej Zlamal for Lidové newspapers.

Zlamal has marked the Red Star management allegations, that the police attacked orderly Red Star fans for no reason and that FC Slavija didn't want to help them in any way, not just after the clash with police but also during the entry to stadium, as “incredible”

Slavija fans trip organizer, Robert Shubrt, has linked the FC Slavija conduct warning with Serbian police.

- They have prohibited us access to Belgrade, to move about the downtown would be too dangerous. We wanted to visit Novi Sad at least, but Serbian police didn't recommend us to. - said Shubrt for the Tiden weekly.

Part of Slavija fans is arriving by plane, and Slavija management doesn't know, for now, the exact number of fans who will travel, because the tickets will be sold in Belgrade. It is already clear that the number won't be large because Czech media are reporting as it is definite that Delije are preparing the hell welcome for Slavija fans.

Czech media are referring to the most extreme threads from Delije internet forum and are ignoring the reports from Belgrade's Czech radio correspondent, that the majority of internet comments from Serbia condemn the behavior of Red Star fans in Prague and the looting of gas stations.

Lidové newspapers is confident that every Czech who dares to go tomorrow to the second leg match in the Serbian capital is hero. Czech newspapers Denik warned that the Serbian fans are among the most dangerous in Europe and that they are, according to Denik, in 3rd place for their violence.
First are, according to Denik, the polish hooligans, whom fights some times end with killings, in 2nd place are the Russians, while Serbian fans are seen as extreme nationalists – and Denik added that the most violent clashes are those between domestic Red Star and Partizan fans.

Following the Serbian fans according to Denik are Croatian fans, in particular Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split fans.

Twenty CH-lads by coach because it was a so-called "combi-game".
Our coach took another road as other seasons.

Riot organised on the internet - 27/08/2009

Source : The Sun

Worse than the ‘70s

SHATTERED victims of football's night of shame branded it WORSE than the hooligan hell of the 1970s yesterday.

Innocents caught up in the orchestrated riots that left soccer reeling told of their terror - as it emerged the East London thugs used hi-tech tactics unheard of three decades ago.

The horrifying bloodlust that saw riot cops battling more than 700 rampaging brutes at West Ham's ground was marshalled via mobile phones and the internet.

One ringleader's message posted on a web forum as Tuesday's derby with Millwall loomed summed up the violence thugs were hell-bent on.

It taunted: "Make sure you bring your bats and don't bring your kids."

Lifelong West Ham fan Paul Hunt, 56, said hours after the savagery left four people in hospital, one of them stabbed in the chest: "It was worse than the 70s - just madness."

Paul, from East Ham, was working as a doorman at a pub close to the ground as mayhem erupted.

He and boss Ron Bolwell, 70 - landlord of The Queen's pub - saw metal railings ripped up, people battered to the ground and cops pelted with bricks, bottles and darts.

Ron said: "When I first took over here there was a match against Millwall but the trouble then was nothing like this.

"I've never seen thugs baying like that. There were hundreds - if not thousands. I saw one man knocked unconscious. Another had been hit over the head with a brick.

"The police were outnumbered 20 to one with bottles and glasses being thrown on them. Some of the fans were acting like animals."

Frantic cops ordered him to shut his besieged pub as they tried to clear the area. Another bar was trashed. At least one car was overturned.

Thirteen people were arrested. Barmaid Ann Whiting, 67, said: "I've lived here all my life and the violence was the worst I've seen.

"There were kids on buses coming through while it was going on. They must have been absolutely petrified."

Shopkeeper Hamad Kham, 26, who has lived near the Hammers' Upton Park stadium for 20 years, said: "The ringleaders were pumped up like animals, throwing bricks and bottles, and lighting fires.

"I saw a police officer on the floor getting kicked."

Security guard Mohammed Gulli, 36, whose flat overlooks where the fan was stabbed, said: "It was horrible." Last night the stab victim, 43, was "stable" in hospital.

A mum-to-be was among others injured. She was reportedly hit in the face by a brick.

The game itself - a Carling Cup clash which West Ham won 3-1 - had to be halted three times after repeated pitch invasions.

Police had rated the derby a Category Five violence risk - the highest.

Two thousand Millwall fans turned up WITHOUT tickets - and cops were furious when 200 of them were let in.

Rival fans goaded each other via text.

A typical message read: "Come now or don't come again."

Hammers supporter Paul Gibson, 34, said: "We started getting texts saying a West Ham fan had been stabbed.

"They spread around the ground, almost sparking a riot. Police started wading in and batons were flying."

Cops, who had 500 officers on duty, called in 250 reinforcements.

Last night they confirmed the violence inside and outside the ground was "pre-planned and organised".

Messages on fan websites were being probed as gloating yobs posted even more yesterday. One Millwall fan calling himself "lionsroar" crowed as he sneered at West Ham supporters: "You got turned over on your own manor."

Another lout boasted: "Broke my banning order restrictions... am confident of getting away with it."

Both clubs vowed to help track down those behind the violence - as The Sun yesterday found a drunken lout we pictured invading the pitch.

Dad-of-four Richard Burgum, in his 40s, bleated at his home in Dagenham hours after turning himself in to cops: "I'm no hooligan. I just got carried away."
