SK Lierse - La Louvière - Cup - 15/08/2009

Source: mail (thanks to the sender) - La Louvière

Phonecalls were exchanged during the end of the week, announcing our venue.
So, about 35-40 lads (+6 Charleroi)took the road of Lier.
We arrived 2h30 before kick off and announced our arriving and situation but locals refused to come to us and said to come to their pub 15 minutes before the game but we refused due to the risks with police, especially because their pub is in front of the stadium.

But, during the game, a small amount of us (5-6) charged a same number of locals in front of their pub.
Locals received punches and police arrived.

Heart of Midlothian - Sunderland AFC - Friendly game - 08/08/2009

Source : BBC News + Mail

Police and fans clash at station

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has been asked to investigate after football fans and officers clashed in Newcastle.

Northumbria Police said four dogs were hurt in the incident at Central Station, involving Sunderland fans returning from a friendly in Scotland.

Some fans accused officers of being heavy handed in their use of batons.

But the Northumbria force said it was the behaviour of fans which had forced them to take such action.

A spokesman said it had intelligence that hooligans from Newcastle and Sunderland had arranged to meet on Saturday evening after the match.

Unprovoked attacks

He said the force had voluntarily referred the incident to the IPCC.

Amanda Jacks, of the Football Supporters' Federation, said: "I have received about a dozen written statements from both Sunderland supporters and members of the public.

"To the best of my knowledge the supporters who have contacted me have done so independently of each other, and their reports are broadly consistent with each other."

Ch Supt Graham Smith said that fans' behaviour had forced officers to react.

He added: "Batons were not drawn until the unprovoked attacks occurred against dogs and dog handlers.

"At that point officers in support drew batons to deal with the disorder."

Decision to stop train full of Sunderland supporters defended

TRAIN operators and transport police have defended their decision to stop a train full of Sunderland supporters in Newcastle.

Black Cats’ supporters caught-up in a stand-off between fans and police, on Saturday have been asking why the two rival factions were ever allowed to meet.

But British Transport Police and National Express today explained they had no option but to bring a train containing around 40 suspected hooligans into the home of their rivals.

Several football fans, police officers and police dogs were injured in the fracas on Saturday night as Sunderland fans returned from a friendly against Hearts, in Edinburgh.

Since then, Northumbria Police has been criticised with claims they used excessive force against the Sunderland fans as they attempted to usher them out of the station and onto Metros back to Wearside.

Police have insisted that their presence was necessary because they had received intelligence rival hooligan gangs, understood to be the Newcastle Gremlins and the Seaburn Casuals, planned to meet for a pre-organised fight in the city.

But innocent fans have since asked why the ‘football special’ train from Scotland back to the North East did not simply continued on to Sunderland.

A spokeswoman for British Transport Police (BTP) said: “The extra special train was put on as a last-minute decision at BTP’s request because more fans than expected had travelled to Scotland.”

And a National Express East Coast spokesman added: “Following discussions with BTP, we provided an additional train from to provide additional capacity for supporters returning from the game.

“The additional service was operated by an electric train, and the main line between Newcastle and Sunderland is not electrified for our trains.”

Northumbria Police’s Newcastle area commander Chief Supt Graham Smith said: “The operation, on Saturday night, was appropriately planned in response to intelligence received about a pre-planned fight between Sunderland fans returning from Scotland and Newcastle fans in the city.”

“When the first train arrived, containing around 40 Sunderland fans described as ‘risk supporters’, they got off and, when met by police, became confrontational and violent, targeting police dogs, and subsequently our officers.”

Three fans, four dogs and several officers were injured in the fracas that followed.

And as police try trace those responsible, an investigation has been launched into allegations of police brutality.

Northumbria Police has voluntarily referred the case to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Northumbria Police will also carry out its own internal investigation.

Sunderland fan punished for ban breaches - 13/08/2009

Source : Sunderland Echo

A Black Cats fan has been sentenced to a year's community order after two breaches of his football banning order.
Phillip Thomas McClaren, 33, of Victory Street, Sunderland will serve a 12-month community order with six months under supervision after breaching his football banning order last month.

McClaren breached his ban by failing to report to Gill Bridge Police Station and surrender his passport on July 14 and 15 and again on July 19, when Sunderland were due to play a friendly match in Portugal.

McClaren admitted all offences at Sunderland Magistrates Court.

Houghton Magistrates' Court imposed a football banning order on McClaren in April, after he ran on to the football pitch during a game.

He breached the order twice in June after he forgot to attend the police station.

Solicitor Duncan Emmerson said this was because McClaren had failed to receive documents notifying him of dates after confusion over his address and the poor health of his mother.

Alongside the 12-month community order and supervision request, McClaren twas ordered to do 80 hours of unpaid work and to pay costs of £86 to the court.

McClaren's football banning order is due to be removed in 2012.

Macedonia : FC Vardar Skopje - Makedonija Djorche Petrov - 16/08/2009

Source : B92 News

Hooligans arrested after attacks

The Macedonian Interior Ministry has filed charges against hooligan fans of the Vardar football club who threw rocks at ethnic Albanians.

Police did not give the names of the nine hooligans who injured five Albanians before the derby between Vardar and Makedonija Djorche Petrov.

Interior Minister Gordana Jankulovska said that a total of seven people were injured and that several vehicles were also damaged.

The Party of Albanians and the opposition Social Democratic Alliance condemned Sunday’s incident and asked for the police to justly punish those responsible.

“It is absolutely unacceptable to have such cowboy and vandal acts take place in the middle of day. Officials of the Interior Ministry must expect that there will be a high level of risk of incidents at sporting events of this nature,” the Social Democratic Alliance stated.

The Democratic Party of Albanians said that the ruling coalition, made up of VMRO-DPMNE and the Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) – another ethnic Albanian party – are "still treating Albanians as second rate citizens", and that the Sunday’s incident was "akin the Crystal Night in Germany in 1938", when Nazis conducted a pogrom of the Jewish population.

DPA accused DUI of not protecting Albanians' interest and asked them to leave the government.

DUI for its part asked Macedonia's MUP and the government to find out who the perpetrators of the violence were.

Earlier today, reports said that four people were injured after the football game.

A group of Vardar supporters "pelted rocks at people and destroyed several cars after their team lost", club spokesman Borche Peshevski told the AP.

Local Telma TV quoted eyewitnesses as saying that a group of several dozen young men "attacked mostly [ethnic] Albanians".

Media are reporting that riots blocked a bridge is Skopje for about four hours.

The four were treated with light injuries in a local hospital.

Worst Football Riots - Part II - 1/08/2009

Source : Goal.com

This weekend here at Goal.com we are running a two part special series on some of the worst football riots the beautiful game has ever seen. In this, the second part, Subhankar Mondal looks at such 10 such cases.....

11. Vasco da Gama v Sao Caetano 2000 (Brazil)

During the final of the 2000 Copa Joao Havelange between Vasco da Gama and Sao Caetano at the Estadio Sao Januario in Rio de Janeiro, fighting between rival supporters started. This led to the collapse of a fence and 60 injuries.

12. Dinamo Zagreb v Red Star Belgrade 1990 (Croatia)

On May 13,1990 Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb hosted former Yugoslav and now Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade at the Maksimir Stadium. Football hooliganism was already quite prominent in Croatia at the time. Over 3000 Red Star supporters had traveled for the match and before it began, a number of small fights broke out. Fighting lasted for over an hour in spite of the arrival of police with water cannons. Hundreds of people were injured.

13. PSG v Hapoel Tel Aviv 2006 (France)

French club PSG and Israeli side Hapoel Tel Aviv clashed with each other at the Parc des Prince in the UEFA Cup on November 24,2006. Hapoel won 4-2 but violence ensued after the match. PSG supporters chased a French fan of the Israeli club and kept on shouting racist slogans.

A police officer tried to protect the Hapoel fan and amidst the volatile and confusing situation one fan was shot dead and another was seriously injured. The entire incident led to intense discussion among authorities on how to curb racism and violence in French football.

14. Scouts Club v Fire Brigade 1999 (Mauritius)

This was not a on-pitch or inside-stadium violence but it was ghastly nevertheless. After a match between Fire Brigade and league champions Scouts Club in May 1999 in the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, seven people were burned to death after rioters threw petrol bombs in a casino. Scouts fans couldn't take in the defeat and went on a rioting-spree, torched sugar cane fields and attacked police vehicles.

15. AS Roma v Lazio 2004 (Italy)

The Rome derby is one of the most volatile and hotly contested derbies in the world, both on the pitch and off it, and in March 2004 there was yet another reason for people to get even more intimidated by it.

Two minutes into the second half of the march and flares were thrown onto the pitch, and before long the entire stadium was wrapped up in heavy smoke that made play impossible. Both Roma and Lazio fans wanted the match to be abandoned as they alleged that child had run been down over by a police vehicle outside the stadium, an accusation that the police vehemently denied.

Moments later three Roma 'ultras' from the 'curva sud' came onto the pitch and 'talked' to club captain Francesco Totti after which Totti was heard shouting at his then coach Fabio Capello, "If we play on now, they'll kill us".

The match was subsequently abandoned and by the end of the night there had been injuries to 60 policemen and 15 fans; 36 fans were either arrested or summoned. Perhaps this is not one of the worst incidents of fan violence but is a vivid illustration of how much power the 'ultras' have in the game.

16. Salernitana v Piacenza 1999 (Italy)

On May 24, 1999 southern Italian club Salernitana traveled to northern Italian club Piacenza in search of a victory that would keep them in the Serie A. They suffered a defeat and consequently suffered relegation to the Serie B and the 1,500 disappointed Salernitana fans were provided a 'special train' to return back south.

The special train became 'special' for violence as the Salernitana supporters wrecked the train and constructed havoc during the journey. They threw stones at people on the platform at every stops and fought with the 12 policemen on board (half of those policemen were young females).

When the train was passing through a tunnel, some fans lit up a fire in order to escape from the train and subsequently escape arrest in Salerno. An entire carriage was burnt down and four died because of severe burns.

17. Atletico Madrid v Real Sociedad 1998 (Spain)

Prior to a UEFA Cup tie between Spanish sides Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad in 1998 in Madrid, Sociedad fan Aitor Zabaleta was stabbed in his heart by an Atleti 'ultra'. It was in the month of December and the occasion was the UEFA Cup third-round, second-leg match in the Spanish capital. Shortly before the match, 28-year-old Zabaleta was chased by right-wing Atletico supporters and stabbed in his chest. Zabaleta was rushed to the hospital but passed away nine hours later.

18. Panathinaikos v Olympiacos 2007 (Greece)

On March 29, 2007 hooligans of Panathinaikos and Olympiacos fought against each other. 500 fans were involved and the violence was so intense that in April 2007 all sports stadiums in Greece were closed down for two weeks.

19. SD Compostela v Deportivo la Coruna 2003 (Spain)

Deportivo la Coruna defeated SD Compostela 1-0 in the King Cup's at the Santiago Compostela in October 2003 and it was supposed to be an occasion of celebration for Depor supporters. But for Manuel Rios Suarez it was anything but, as he lost his life because of injuries sustained in violence. He was 31 years of age and his death came as a huge shock to Spain, leading the country's top sports daily Marca to lament, "what should have been a night of celebration was converted into a grim spectacle because of savage aggression and the actions of a madman at Castalia."

20. IFK Goteborg 1970 (Sweden)

At the end of a match in 1970 that saw IFK Goteborg suffer relegation from the Allsvenskan, supporters of the Swedish club invaded the pitch, destroyed the goalposts and fought with the police. The match is significant for the fact that this is supposed to be one of the major incidents of hooliganism in Sweden at the time.

Bolivia : Blooming fined and given 3-0 defeat after player attacked - 18/08/2009

Source : Reuters

Bolivian club Blooming have been fined and handed a 3-0 home defeat after a fan ran on to the field, attacked a visiting player and forced an international club match to be called off.

The South American Football Confederation (CSF) said on Tuesday that the Santa Cruz-based team would have to pay $10,000 following the incident in 66th minute of the game against Uruguay's River Plate on Aug. 11.

River Plate, leading 1-0, were given a 3-0 win in the Copa Sudamericana first round, first leg tie. The tournament is the region's equivalent of the Europa League.

"The referee reported a serious situation with the entry of a supporter on to the field of play," the CSF said in a statement.

River went ahead in the 61st minute, five minutes before the fan ran on to the field and attacked visiting striker Henry Gimenez.

The decision to call off the match sparked protests from Blooming fans, who hurled assorted missiles and flares on to the pitch.

The fan, reported by local media to be carrying a knife, was arrested.

Northern Ireland: Local football fans in court - 19/08/2009

Source: http://www.carrickadvertiser.co.uk/articles/news/8823/local-football-fans-in-court/

TWO Linfield fans from Carrickfergus and Ballycarry have been fined £200 each for disorderly behaviour at a cup game at the Brandywell football ground in Londonderry.
Undercover police officers travelling with Linfield fans in 2008 saw Jamie Stirling, 20, of Dromore Road Carrick and Warren Coard, 20, from Ballycarry, behaving disorderly, the court heard.
A prosecution lawyer told the court that both men were seen attempting to climb over a segregation barrier in the stadium. The undercover police officers also heard the defendants shouting sectarian slogans at rival supporters. Both were arrested after the game at the Crescent Link in the Waterside where the Linfield supporters had been escorted when the game finished.
The lawyer said that Stirling, who had just started a job as a machine operator, was also seen banging his fists on the barrier and lifting his shirt towards rival supporters.
He was also heard shouting "Derry scum", the court was told.

Birmingham City fan faces extradition to Portugal - 19/08/2009

Source: http://www.birminghammail.net/news/top-stories/2009/08/19/birmingham-city-fan-faces-extradition-to-portugal-97319-24478781/

A BLUES fan convicted of involvement in a riot five years ago during the Euro 2004 tournament is facing extradition to Portugal to serve a two-year prison term.

Garry Mann, originally from Birmingham but now living in Faversham, Kent, said he was left “quite distraught” by the decision.

Mann received the prison sentence for his alleged role in football-related violence outside La Bamba bar in the Algarve resort of Albufeira in June 2004.

The 51-year-old former Duddeston Manor school pupil was kicked out of the country within 24 hours of his arrest after a fast-track trial and was expected to serve his sentence here.

But the authorities in Britain did not enforce the two-year term.

Mann, who has always protested his innocence, had heard nothing more until February when he was unexpectedly arrested under a European arrest warrant and told that the Portuguese authorities wanted him back to serve the term there.

In a judgement yesterday, Senior District Judge Timothy Workman, at City of Westminster Magistrates Court, dismissed claims he did not have a fair trial or that the four-and-a-half years since the alleged defence should rule out extradition.

The former firefighter said he would appeal to the High Court.

Mann, whose bail was renewed, said: “I find it quite unbelievable he should find against me after all the evidence he’s listened to.

“I find it quite unbelievable that he’s basically chosen to ignore most of the defence case, mostly the human rights issue. I got five minutes with the defence team to get my case together.

“How can anyone not see that I didn’t have a fair trial?”

Mann’s lawyers had claimed he underwent a fast-track procedure which produced an unfair trial.

At the hearing last month, his counsel Anthony Metzer said there had been a retrospective decision to take him to Portugal after he did not serve the jail term in Britain, and it would be ‘an abuse of executive power’ if he were extradited.

“He has continued since to be a law-abiding person in this country, he’s a family man, he has been working throughout, and simply put the matter behind him,” he added.

Following his conviction in Portugal in 2004, his sister-in-law Bernadette Mann, speaking outside his mother’s Bordesley Green house, said he was with his brother Mark in another bar about a mile away from the rioting.

Hundreds of the Serbian club's fans gathered in Prague's medieval Old Town Square with some hurling beer glasses and other objects at passersby and others smashing nearby windows.

Riot police, who had beefed up security ahead of the match following other crowd trouble involving Red Star fans, responded. Eight people were injured in the resulting clashes, although none seriously, news website IDNES reported.

"Police detained 150 fans. Of that number, 38 ended up at the police station for further investigation. Twelve will be charged with criminal offences," Prague police spokeswoman Andrea Zoulova said.

She said police were still determining what to do with the remaining 100 fans.

Slavia won the playoff round first-leg match 3-0.

In April, 95 fans were arrested following a derby between city rivals Partizan and Red Star after they clashed with police and set fire to 1,300 seats at Partizan's stadium.

Red star were forced to play one home match behind closed doors after the trouble.

Street violence as prelude to Slavia v Red Star clash
Hooligans spark state of emergency in Prague

For an umpteenth time in the history of Red Star’s trips for away European matches – this time for the first leg of the Europa League tie against Slavia in Prague – the Belgrade side’s so-called travelling supporters caused disorder and violence in the city they landed in. Fifty-odd Red Star hooligans looted a series of service stations on their way to Prague, where their beloved team had their stiff test against Slavia. The epilogue is 44 fans detained, who were instantly deported from the territory of the Czech Republic.

- “As for the club’s organization of the match, we’re talking about the strictest security measures this stadium has seen. There were around 220 stewards and security members at the game. All tickets were personalized, while the distribution of away tickets was organized by Red Star football club,” says Slavia Prague press agent Ondrej Zlamal.
The clash at the Stadion Eden had been labelled a high-risk game, as the Czech police, using the last season’s experience when Dinamo Zagreb fans wreaked havoc throughout Prague, did everything to prevent any rampages this time around.
- “The game was described as a high-risk one, mostly because of the away team fans. They possess flares, they are infamous for their violence and aggressiveness when under the influence. The police have been on stand-by since 8am, and there are 280 troops at disposal,” Prague police spokeswoman Eva Maklikova said on a press conference.
The Prague forces called-up to stave off any skirmishes around the city include riot police troops, police with dogs, cavalry, while a police helicopter flew over the Slavia ground throughout the game.

South Africa: Hooligans will hear, but not see matches - 22/08/2009

Source: http://www.iol.co.za/index.php?set_id=1&click_id=13&art_id=vn20090822124347313C965263

Two police cells capable of holding eight soccer hooligans each have been built at the Green Point 2010 World Cup Stadium as part of the tough security measures being put in place to curb bad behaviour during matches.

Hooliganism at soccer stadiums will not be tolerated and those who misbehave will be locked up, warned the SA Football Association WP president Vernon Seymour.

"It sends out a clear message that when you set foot in this stadium you must behave yourself," Seymour told the Weekend Argus.

He was referring to the incident last week when Kaizer Chiefs fans went on the rampage at Newlands Stadium in a soccer game against home team Ajax.

Chaos erupted during the MTN8 semi-final. Chiefs have been slapped with a R500 000 fine. An amount of R350 000 has to be paid immediately and R150 000 has been suspended.

About 500 seats were damaged on the grandstand and unruly fans also threw bottles and vuvuzelas on to the field.

One of the city's 2010 directors, Dave Hugo, said the two holding cells could contain about eight people each. "They will hold culprits temporarily until they are taken to a police station."

Deputy Police Commissioner Andre Pruis has indicated that as part of security measures all host cities would have a dedicated police station with separate holding cells, a courtroom for speedy judgments and a Home Affairs office for possible speedy deportations.

The Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Bill is also aimed at improving security at stadiums.

Supporters could face a fine or imprisonment if they engage in delinquent and anti-social behaviour inside a stadium venue, or along a route to it - including engaging in racist, vulgar, inflammatory, intimidating, or obscene language or behaviour.

After a meeting with Ajax management yesterday, the CEO of the Premier Soccer League, Kjetil Siem, described the actions of Kaizer Chiefs supporters as "disgraceful" and said he believed the incident would serve as a wake-up call to the possibility of hooliganism during the World Cup.

He said: "With security under the spotlight, the PSL will assist not only Ajax Cape Town, but all our clubs with security planning and deployment around Category A matches. We have already decided to deploy 100 PSL security guards to Cape Town on October 4 when Ajax Cape Town host Kaizer Chiefs in an Absa Premiership clash at Newlands."

He said they would make provision in their budget for further training in security matters in line with World Cup standards, regular workshops on security and a security manual being developed for clubs and the PSL.

Ajax Cape Town said it would look at increasing security and putting a more stringent management plan in place when hosting games at home after Kaizer Chiefs fans went on the rampage.

The WP Rugby Union has also said that the PSL would be denied games if they did not put proper management strategies in place.

WP Rugby spokesman Gavin Lewis said the repairs to Newlands Stadium were completed earlier this week and the stadium was now "100 percent".

On Wednesday night Santos played Bloemfontein Celtic at the stadium.

Lewis said they maintained a "very good" relationship with Cape Town clubs Santos and Ajax. "All the repairs are completed and Wednesday's match went perfectly. We still maintain a good relationship with the clubs and we are ready for three rugby matches today."

Asked whether they were concerned about hosting Chiefs, who attract the biggest crowds with a reputation for unruliness, Lewis said: "Our agreement with clubs and organisations is only that we lease the venue. The management is up to them, subject to a proper management plan. In future we would want to address it for bigger matches".

Ajax spokesman Mark Meyer said they had still not received the bill for damages so he did not know how much they had to pay.

He said the PSL was responsible for last Saturday's management plan and Ajax had been asked by the PSL which security company they used.

They recommended ADT, who worked alongside traffic and police officials as a joint operations team.

Ajax face Chiefs in October, again in the Absa Premiership.

"We will go ahead according to the plan on paper. We have always submitted management plans when security is our responsibility. We have used ADT for the past 10 years and we have faith in their service. Our plan includes how much security and where they will be situated. When there is an incident, however, it is up to the Joint Operation Centre (JOC), police and traffic included, and they make the call on how a situation will be handled," Meyer said.

Meyer said they were confident their management plan was sufficient to deal with huge crowds.

"However, if a man is going to pull a chair from the concrete stand, it's going to take a while to get to him. But we feel our security plan is sufficient with the JOC. We don't condone this kind of behaviour and we will pay what we need to," Meyer said.

Judge orders convicted football hooligan's extradition to Portugal for Euro 2004 riot - 19/08/2009

Source: The Telegraph

An English football hooligan, Garry Mann, should be extradited to Portugal to serve a jail term after he was convicted of rioting during the Euro 2004 tournament, a judge has ruled.

The 51 year-old former fireman, from Faversham, Kent, is however, set to appeal the ruling to the High Court after he claimed the judge had “ignored” his defence.

He was jailed for two years by a judge in Portugal, within hours of the June 15 riot in the Algarve resort of Albufeira, and immediately deported after he found to have helped orchestrate the violence.

Mann, who had denied the charges, claimed he underwent a “fast-track” legal procedure, producing an unfair trial, had inadequate legal advice after only seeing his lawyer for “five minutes” and had no access to a proper interpreter.

But in his judgement, handed down on Tuesday, Senior District Judge Timothy Workman rejected those claims and dismissed concerns the four-and-a-half years since the alleged incident should rule out extradition.

“I am satisfied whilst (Mann) might have optimistically hoped that he would not have to serve the sentence out, but it would be in no way oppressive for that lawful sentence to be served,” the judge told Westminster magistrates court.

"This being a convicted case… there are no grounds for finding there was any abuse of process in this court.

“I'm satisfied the extradition is not barred by virtue of the passage of time, (Mann’s) extradition is compatible with his rights and I am therefore ordering his extradition to Portugal."

He said he was satisfied that Mann knew why he was arrested, the judge had properly conducted the case and that the group had had time to mount a proper defence.

“I am satisfied that the voluntary deportation from Portugal was a measure taken to prevent further offences rather than alternative to the sentence of imprisonment opposed,” he added.

Outside court, Mann said he could not understand why the judge had “ignored” his defence.

“How can anyone say on the basis of the evidence that we produced that I did have a fair trial,” he told The Daily Telegraph.

“I just find it unbelievable.”

His case was backed by Fair Trials International, whose chief executive Jago Russell, criticised the judgement.

This week, The Daily Telegraph reported that hundreds of Britons will be extradited for minor misdemeanours ranging from driving offences and drunkenness to more bizarre crimes such as stealing chickens, under the new EU rules which come into force next year.

The judicial review is expected sometime later in the autumn.
