West Yorkshire Police mounted a huge security operation at Elland Road for the League One semi-final play-off on Thursday night. Police said the arrests had been made both inside and outside the ground after incidents of public disorder. Games between the two League One clubs have been repeatedly marred by violence over the years. A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said it was not yet clear whether those arrested were Leeds or Millwall fans. Millwall fans had to pick up their tickets from a motorway service station ahead of the game in a police bid to stop potential troublemakers at the match. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, giving Milwall an aggregate 2-1 win and a place in the play-off final at Wembley. *********************************** Source : London Daily News Millwall play-off win overshadowed by violenceMillwall's League One play-off win last night in Leeds was overshadowed by violent scenes in and around the ground. The match was a category C, the highest risk level. Huge police operation Hundreds of police were drafted in to quell any unrest but thousands gathered outside the Elland Road after full time and clashed with officers. Two dozen police horses charged the streets too clear supporters while the away fans boarded their coaches home. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, giving the South Bermondsey club an aggregate 2-1 win and a place in the promotion-deciding play-off final at Wembley. Fans furious at motorway ticket pick up Earlier in the day Lions fans were furious after West Yorkshires Police gave them just one hour in which to pick up match tickets at an M1 service station. Bob Asprey, chairman of Millwall Supporters' Club, called the move "disgraceful" adding: "Never before have we had to pitch up to a motorway service area on the day of a match." "We've got 1,000 supporters turning up there and they've only given us an hour in which to be there and exchange our tickets." A police spokesman said: "Fans have been given around one hour to pick up their tickets, this limits the opportunity for trouble to occur between the times of picking up the tickets and the match starting." A spokesman for Leeds United said: "The ticket allocation mirrors the amount given to the Leeds fans for the first leg. The decision to allocate a 1,000 tickets for both legs was made by the two clubs and the police forces involved." ********************************************************** Source: mail (thanks to the sender)

| Lucerne grapples with tougher hooligan measures - 15/05/2009Source : World Radio Switzerland Football hooligans and how to deal with them - that’s what voters in the canton of Lucerne are wrestling with this weekend. They are voting on whether measures introduced at federal level to combat hooliganism at the Euro 2008 football championships last year should continue to apply. The reason they are voting at all is that policing sports events is the competence of the cantons, and each and every canton needs to approve the rules. About a third of cantons have already done so. But Lucerne is the first to hold a vote because opponents forced a referendum on the issue. Cantons which do not approve the extension of anti-hooliganism laws implemented in the lead-up to Euro2008 will no longer enforce them. | |

| Bosnia-Herzegovina and Poland punished - 15/05/2009
Source : ESPN STAR Sports
Bosnia-Herzegovina and Poland have been fined by FIFA and warned over the future conduct of their fans after crowd disturbances in March.
FIFA's disciplinary committee decreed that the Football Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina must pay 50,000 Swiss Francs (33,300 euros) after fireworks were set off by away fans in the game against Belgium in Genk on March 29.
The incident led to an eight-minute delay when the players were evacuated from the pitch and a supporter also invaded the playing area.
The Polish Football Association were fined 25,000 Swiss Francs (16,650 euros) following their World Cup qualifier in Northern Ireland the day before.
Polish fans were also found to have released fireworks, while police had objects thrown at them in the away end.
The disciplinary committee met in Zurich on May 7 and, in addition to the fines, warned both associations as to their future conduct.
A statement added: "Should incidents of such gravity occur again, harsher sanctions, such as a points deduction or elimination of the representative team from a respective tournament, will be imposed by the FIFA disciplinary committee."
An additional fine of 25,000 Swiss Frances (16,650 euros) was also handed to the Greek Football Federation in relation to the use of lasers and display of politically-motivated banners during Greece's home clash with Israel on April 1.

| Huddersfield Town and Leeds United fans in court over football violence - 15/05/2009
Source : Huddersfield Daily Examiner
EIGHT men have been charged over Valentine’s Day violence sparked by Huddersfield Town’s clash with Leeds United.
The men – believed to be seven Town fans and a Leeds fan – are charged with violent disorder in Huddersfield town centre on Saturday, February 14.
Officers were called to Cross Church Street, Byram Street, John William Street and Westgate to deal with a number of incidents.
Investigations using CCTV footage led to the arrests of the men, who have now been charged and bailed to appear at Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court on June 5.
But police are still looking for four men pictured in CCTV images printed in Saturday’s Examiner.
Police issued warnings before the match, which Town won 1-0, that they would come down hard on troublemakers.
And Kirklees Det Chief Insp Dave Knopwood said: “We will not tolerate violence before, during or after football matches and this demonstrates the lengths we are prepared to go to stamp it out.
“The people who do involve themselves in such offences are not fans and do not represent the thousands who regularly attend the matches in Huddersfield.
“The police work closely with Huddersfield Town Football Club to ensure that we are able to cut out any elements of disorder and deal robustly with anyone committing such offences.”
Huddersfield Town chief executive Nigel Clibbens said: “People who see football as an opportunity to cause disorder and participate in violent conduct have no place at the Galpharm and are not seen as the true supporters they often purport to be.
“They are certainly not welcome here.”

| Murder police call for derby calm - 15/05/2009
Source : expressandstar.com
Police have called for calm at next season’s Birmingham derby after a Villa fan was jailed for life for murdering a fellow supporter.
Season ticket holder Christopher Priest was killed almost instantly when he was mown down by Lee Mockble in the aftermath of the club’s 5-1 victory over rivals Birmingham City in April last year, in what was described as “dreadful act of revenge.”
Lifelong Villa fan Mockble, aged 21, is now serving a life sentence after being found guilty on Wednesday of murdering Mr Priest following a trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court.
Mockble’s Volkswagen Golf had been damaged with a pint glass thrown by Mr Priest’s friend, who mistook the passengers for Blues fans. But moments later the driver turned round and drove towards the group on the wrong side of the road, killing the 26-year-old almost instantly.
Police have described the killing as the result of misplaced football hostility and have pleaded for respect from both sets of supporters when the cross-city clubs meet for the first time since the tragedy next season.
Senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector Nick Walton, from Queens Road police station, said Mr Priest’s death showed that football should never be important enough to lead to such violence.
“The Birmingham City and Aston Villa game would ordinarily have a police presence,” he said. “Next season we will monitor any intelligence but we are confident this is firmly an isolated incident which will not have an impact on next season’s fixtures and we would urge people to behave in an appropriate manner out of respect for Christopher and Christopher’s family,” he said.
“During the trial witnesses spoke of this man’s death stemming from a rivalry between supporters of Birmingham City and Aston Villa after the match.
“Whilst there was never any suggestion that this was a pre-meditated attack based purely on football rivalry, during the course of the investigation it became clear that the initial events leading up to Christopher sustaining his injuries began as a result of a bit of football-based hostility initiated by persons associated with Christopher.
“Football fans attend matches in this city in their thousands and the vast majority are law abiding and would be horrified by what happened that day, no matter what team they support.
“Regardless of motive, this was a tragic case where a young man was robbed of his life.”
Det Insp Walton added he was “ecstatic” with the verdict which was the result of a long and complex inquiry.
“This trial begun at the anniversary of his death, and it has been a difficult and traumatic time for Christopher’s friends and family. I hope the verdict goes some way to helping them move forward with their lives,” he added.

| Airdrie United - Partick Thistle - 02/05/2009
Source : Airdrie and Coatbridge Advertiser
Airdrie hooligans in running street battle
AIRDRIE football hooligans were involved in a mass brawl that left a man seriously injured in hospital .
Over 100 hate-filled rival fans clashed before a match between Airdrie United and Partick Thistle at Glasgow’s Firhill Stadium.
The incident took place at 2.20pm on Saturday, May 2, in Arlington Street, near Woodlands Road, in the west end of the city.
Bottles were thrown as the fans traded blows in an orgy of violence, which saw a 38-year-old man treated for a “serious” head wound.
Police have examined CCTV footage and say they are “confident” of making arrests.
They are also looking into reports that English hooligans attached to Premiership clubs were involved.
Sources believe the meeting of the rival gangs of supporters was pre-planned.
The match itself - which Airdrie United won - passed off with out incident.
One contact said: “The numbers on each side and the location of the fighting shows that this was definitely set up in advance.
“Arlington Street is not close to Firhill and well over 100 fans were there, possibly as many as 140.
“Airdrie and Partick Thistle fans hate each other and it’s not the first time something like this has happened.
“It goes back a long way that’s why most of those involved were in their 30s and 40s.
“It’s kind of pathetic, really, guys at that age carrying on like wee boys.”
Glasgow police are now looking for witnesses to contact them to fully establish the sequence of events.
Officers have studied CCTV footage from cameras in the area and spoken to local businesses in a bid to identify those involved.
They expect to be able to name many of the perpetrators and have issued a stark warning.
Inspector Douglas Stevenson said: “Anyone who was involved in this incident should come forward before we visit them.
“We are confident that we will be able to identify many of those involved and it will lead to subsequent arrests.
“It would be better for them to come forward rather than wait for the police to chap their door.”

| Football ban order upheld by magistrates - 15/05/2009
Source : The Herald
AN ARGYLE supporter has lost his fight to overturn a football banning order after police said he mixed with the notorious 'Central Element' hooligans.
Plymouth magistrates upheld the order, which bans 23-year-old Shaun Vincent from all Argyle and England games for the next four years.
The court heard how Vincent, of Colwill Road, Mainstone, had shown good behaviour during a previous two-year banning order. Since it had been lifted, however, police had observed Vincent's presence at a number of violent altercations involving known football hooligans calling themselves the Central Element, a court heard.
On one occasion, in November last year, he was seen walking with up to 60 others moments before two Cardiff City-supporting fans were left with facial injuries in Central Park.
Vincent's solicitor, Jodie Baker, told the court her client had no previous convictions for violence and there was no proof that he had committed any violent crimes. Click here for more
She said: "His mere presence with other people isn't enough to justify this order."
Vincent is also banned from entering Torquay or Exeter on match days.

| Football hooligans given the boot for three years - 16/05/2009Source : Evening Chronicle FOUR football hooligans have been given the boot. The louts have been involved in major dust-ups involving yobs across the UK and on the continent in recent years. But today, their thuggery has caught up with them and they are now banned from the sport for three years. Paul Peet, of Durham City, is a known members of the Newcastle Gremlins gang and was one of more than 80 people involved in ugly scenes in the Dutch town of Breda in 2003. Newcastle Magistrates’ Court was presented a dossier of disorder relating to the 49-year-old, detailing his involvement in nine separate outbreaks of disorder. He was hit with a three-year football banning order, along with fellow yob Alan Kelly, 42, of Jarrow, South Tyneside, who was arrested for chanting racist songs at an England away game. And Andrew Moffit and Michael Peareth have also been banned after details of their part in disturbances during a Newcastle United pre-season friendly in Carlisle were given. Moffit, 24, of Sunniside, and Peareth, 35, of Dunston, both Gateshead, were part of a mob which clashed with Carlisle supporters, terrifying innocent families in a pub. Police today hailed the bans given to the quartet, which mean they cannot go to games in England and Wales and must stay out of towns and cities where Newcastle United play. Sgt Glenn Patterson, of Northumbria Police’s football intelligence unit, said: “These results show we will take a hard line against all forms of football-related disorder. “We are glad these banning orders will prevent known risk supporters attending football games for the foreseeable future.” | |

| FC Barcelona - Villarreal - 16/05/2009Source : Goal.com + ABC.es 65 Arrested And 51 Injured In Barcelona CelebrationsBarcelona's title celebrations turned ugly on Saturday evening as a minority of fans turned on the police... Trouble flared in Barcelona, after Pep Guardiola's team officially won the league title, as revellers clashed with police and security forces in the city centre. The Blaugrana were crowned champions after Real Madrid were beaten by Villarreal and around 15,000 people gathered at the top of Las Ramblas in the Canaletes area and in Placa Catalunya. Celebrations remained lively but peaceful, with a large number of families joining the in the festivities, but that all changed at around 3am when the police came under attack from a group throwing cans and bottles. Catalan police, known as the Mossos, and the Guardia Urbana, looked to quell the disturbances and warned fans to disperse or be removed from the area. As objects rained down on them, including a bicycle, the police moved in, with the Mossos arresting 40 people and the Guardia Urbana 25, with four minors included in the list of those detained. Around 36 fans were injured, while eleven Mossos officers and four Guardia Urbana officers were treated for cuts and abrasions as the trouble continued for half-an-hour. Barcelona fans have been to the area at the top of Las Ramblas, where they traditionally meet to celebrate trophy wins or wins against Real Madrid, three times in the past few weeks. | |

| Two Porstmouth Fans Banned For Three Years - 16/05/2009
Source: http://www.scorespro.com/news/20090516/two-porstmouth-fans-banned-for-three-years.html
Two more football supporters have been banned from attending matches for three years after they were found guilty of yelling indecent chants at English defender Sol Campbell of Portsmouth during a Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur. The game, which Portsmouth won 2-0 at Fratton Park in Portsmouth on Sept. 28th, was marred by racist and homophobic crowd behaviour.
Ian Trow, 42, of Milton Keynes, and a 14-year-old boy, who can’t be named for legal reasons, earlier pleaded not guilty at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court to a charge of indecent chanting. However they were in a group of Spurs fans who were identified by the police as yelling racist and homophobic remarks at Campbell during the game.
Trow was also fined 500 English pounds and the teenager was given a conditional discharge for 12 months.
Campbell upset Tottenham fans when he left Spurs for their north London rivals Arsenal seven years ago. Campbell then went to Portsmouth after leaving Arsenal in August 2006. The former England international defender is regularly jeered by Tottenham fans whenever he plays against his former club.

| Aston Villa fan murder: Car passenger revealed to be convicted thug - 17/05/2009
Source: http://www.birminghammail.net/news/birmingham-news/2009/05/17/aston-villa-fan-murder-car-passenger-revealed-to-be-convicted-thug-97319-23643425/
A MAN who sat next to murderer Lee Mockble as he drove his car at Aston Villa fan Christopher Priest is a convicted thug who was involved in a similar revenge attack four years ago.
Oliver Higgins, 21, was arrested on suspicion of murder hours after the claret and blue fan was killed near Villa Park following last season’s derby clash with Birmingham City.
Blues supporter Higgins, of Kings Norton, was picked up by border control officers at Folkestone ferry port as he attempted to cross to Spain.
Officers questioned him under caution but neither he nor fellow car passenger Ryan Pedley, 20, were charged with any offence.
Mockble, 21 and from Hall Green, was sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum sentence of 12 years, after being found guilty of Christopher’s murder on Wednesday.
Today, the Sunday Mercury revealed that Higgins narrowly escaped jail after being convicted of a similar attack in 2005.
He had been a front seat passenger in a van which mowed down teenager Andrew Richards in a revenge attack after its wing mirror had been smashed.
Higgins and his accomplice then chased the 17-year-old before assaulting him and stealing his gold chain – as well as threatening to bite his ear off.
In the same year, he threatened to burn down his parents’ house while both his mum and dad were inside.
He later pleaded guilty at Worcester Crown Court to making threats to destroy property, assault, causing actual bodily harm, and stealing a gold chain.
Higgins was sentenced to a three-year community rehabilitation order, on condition he complied with psychiatric treatment after reports concluded that he had shown signs of a personality disorder.
Judge Andrew Geddes said he had “callous unconcern for the feelings of others” and “a low threshold of aggression. Yet the judge ruled out jail to give him a “last chance”.
Lethal
Four years later Higgins found himself sitting in the £10,000 VW Golf next to Mockble, who used the vehicle as a ‘‘lethal weapon’’.
Before Christopher, 26, was murdered a pint glass was thrown at the car, smashing the window and injuring front seat passenger Pedley. The car drove off and Pedley, from Yardley Wood, swapped seats with Higgins who had been sitting in the back seat.
Mockble then deliberately drove at the Villa fan in a “dreadful act of revenge”, Birmingham Crown Court heard.
It has also emerged that at the time of the murder both Higgins and Mockble were on bail after an affray. The killer later received a custodial sentence, while Higgins was ordered to pay a fine.
Last night, Christopher’s uncle Mike Ross said what happened inside the car in the moments before the murder remained a ‘baffling’ mystery.
He said: ‘‘We want to know what was going on, and what was being said, that drove Mockble to do what he did. In the eyes of the law Pedley and Higgins are innocent but they are two of three people who knew exactly what happened in the moments leading to Christopher’s murder.
“Neither gave evidence at the trial, so these are questions we will never know the answer to.”
Detective Inspector Nick Walton, who led the inquiry for West Midlands Police, said: “As heard in court both Pedley and Higgins were in the car when Mockble used it as a lethal weapon to kill Christopher Priest.
“Once we had ascertained that neither had been driving the vehicle, there was no evidence to suggest they had been involved in Mr Priest’s death.”
At Higgins’s court hearing in 2005 his defence barrister, Tom Schofield, said that although Higgins represented a continuing risk he was not “inherently dangerous”.
Neither Higgins nor Pedley were available for comment last night.

| Tottenham: Pair guilty of 'indecent' chants - 15/05/2009
Source: http://msn.football365.com/story/0,17033,8705_5325714,00.html
A man and a boy were found guilty on Friday of shouting "shocking and disgusting" homophobic chants at a football match.
Ian Trow, 42, of Kingshill Drive, Deanshanger, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, and the 14-year-old had pleaded not guilty at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court to the charge of indecent chanting.
The charges relate to chants made at Portsmouth defender Sol Campbell during a match against Tottenham at Fratton Park on September 28 last year.
After a three-hour trial, Georgette Holbrook, chairwoman of the panel, found the two defendants had chanted "Come on gay boy, that's my gay boy".
She said: "We find that the words used were in extremely bad taste, they were inappropriate, shocking and disgusting, and as such they were indecent."
Sophie Stevens, prosecuting, said: "The police and members of the public considered there was significant abuse from the travelling Tottenham supporters, abuse above what is perhaps wrongly accepted at a football match."
The magistrates were shown a DVD of footage recorded by police showing Tottenham fans at the match.
Angie Cunningham, defending, said the video footage was examined by a professional lip reader who said the youth, who was 13 at the time, could be seen pointing and shouting: "Come on gay boy, that's my gay boy".
She added that Trow could only be seen saying the words: "Come on, that's my gay".
But the magistrates ruled that Trow had said the same words as the boy.
Ms Cunningham said it could not be assumed that the two defendants joined in other chants heard at the match.
She added: "They passionately and whole-heartedly believed their behaviour and language didn't overstep the mark of what is acceptable behaviour and language at a football match."
The video footage also showed other chants which were shouted by up to 2,500 fans.
In a statement read to the court, Campbell: "I felt absolutely disgusted at this and I didn't react because of my profile and I feared I might make the situation worse and cause problems.
"I felt totally victimised and helpless by the abuse I received on this day.
"It has had an effect on me personally and I do not want it to continue. I support the police in their action."
Following the match, Hampshire Police released images of 16 people wanted in connection with the chants.
A total of 11 were arrested and four men pleaded guilty to the offence in January and were sentenced to a three-year football banning order and a fine.
Three men and two 15-year-old boys have been given police cautions, according to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
Both Trow and the 14-year-old boy were banned from attending football matches for three years.
Trow was fined £500 and ordered to pay £400 costs and £15 to a victim surcharge fund.
The 14-year-old was given a conditional discharge for 12 months and ordered to pay £400 costs.
Miss Cunningham said both defendants intended to appeal against the conviction.
