Thug banned for Newcastle v Sunderland brawl - 01/05/2009

Source : ChronicleLive

FOR the second time this soccer yob has been kicked into touch.

Steven Jary was one of 35 charged after rival hooligan gangs from Newcastle and Sunderland clashed in an organised brawl at the North Shields ferry terminal in 2000.

He was jailed for four months for his part in the battle, described as being like Braveheart.

More than nine years on and Jary, of Horsley Hill Road, South Shields, was caught causing trouble at the Tyne Wear derby at St James’s Park in February.

He was among thousands of Sunderland fans being escorted out of the ground and was seen throwing punches and kicks at police.

Jary, now 34, was later stopped at Newcastle Central Station, where he was arrested.

Now, the married electrician has been hit with a three-year football banning order after being convicted of using threatening words or behaviour at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court.

During the hearing, three officers gave evidence, detailing how they saw Jary throw a series of punches at police.

But he denied the offence, claiming he had been arrested by mistake later in the day.

Magistrates rejected his version and convicted him, for which he received a £510 fine, as well as being ordered to pay £450 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

After the conviction, football banning officer PC Steve Graham gave evidence, applying for Jary to be hit with a ban, partly in connection with his involvement in the ferry landing disorder.

He said: “His conviction in 2001 relates to the most serious and organised incident of football violence I have seen in 15 years of policing football.”

The events in North Shields saw football yobs using mobile phone calls and text messages to co-ordinate a savage battle. Hooligans from the Newcastle Gremlins and the Seaburn Casuals of Sunderland, clashed by the Tyne on March 18.

Belgrade hooligans in Valjevo stabbing - 01/05/2009

Source: Beta

A group of young men engaged in a fight in downtown Valjevo yesterday, with two emerging from the brawl with stab wounds.

Beta news agency learned from the town's Emergency Center that both suffered stab wounds from a knife to their legs, chest and head, but that the injuries were not life-threatening.

Local police (MUP) said that several others who took part in the incident were detained, but would not give any more details in the interest of an ongoing investigation.

Unofficially, and according to eye-witnesses, those who participated in the fight were members of groups of football supporters, who traveled to the western Serbian town from Belgrade to spend May Day there.

Israël: Beitar Jerusalme fined - 01/05/2009

Source : L'Equipe

The Beitar Jerusalem, double champion of Israel in title, bailed out of a point of penalty and a home match behind closed doors, after songs with racist connotation struck up by part of their supporters at the time of a match of Championship, last month. Since 2005, the club passed to more than twenty recoveries before the Israeli disciplinary commission for various incidents. Beitar, currently 3rd with seven lengths of the Maccabi Haifa, leader, should make call of this decision.

Steaua Bucharest defender injured when fans stone bus carrying team

A Steaua Bucharest football player was taken to hospital with a head injury Tuesday after the bus carrying his team to a match was attacked by a group of unidentified people throwing stones, club officials said.

Steaua spokesman Catalin Fainisi said a stone shattered the bus window and hit defender Pawel Golanski on the head. Fainisi was also slightly injured.

The Polish defender needed stitches and will stay in a Bucharest hospital overnight, according to hospital doctor Ioan Sarbu.

Police are investigating the incident and are questioning suspects who had quickly left the scene of the incident.

The team was en route to Buzau, 100 kilometres northeast of Bucharest, for a Romanian league game against Gloria Buzau on Tuesday evening.

Carlisle Utd - Millwall FC - 02/05/2009

Source : Times & Star

Twelve arrests as huge police operation stops Carlisle Utd match trouble

Twelve people were arrested for minor public order offences on Saturday, as a large police presence drowned potential trouble.

Police intelligence suggested that violence was brewing between Carlisle and Millwall supporters, but with more than 100 officers on duty, any bubbling tensions between rival fans were quickly quashed.

Chief Superintendent Don Spiller led the operation, and said he was pleased with how the day had gone.

He said: “It went very well. There were clearly large groups from both sides intent on causing trouble, but because we had sufficient resources we were able to identify trouble early and we could take preventative action.”

In total, 130 police officers, all from Cumbria police, were on duty during the day.

They were joined by mounted officers – including eight horses drafted in from Lancashire police – mobile CCTV units and numerous vehicles. Some officers were travelling around Carlisle in rented Enterprise vans.

Simmering tensions between supporters of Carlisle and Millwall drinking in neighbouring Botchergate pubs led to two heavily policed escorts winding along Warwick Road towards Brunton Park shortly before the game.

Ch Supt Spiller said the level of policing was appropriate given the occasion. “Our staff are experienced in dealing with these situations, and we have learned from it and from the operation as well.

“The vast majority of people were there to support their teams and the trouble was only from a small minority, but a minority can have an impact.

“We have to base the number of officers on the intelligence we have and the threat we face.

“The reason we didn’t have any violence is due to the amount of planning and resources in place.

“We had intelligence that there would be trouble from both sets of supporters so we based our resources on that intelligence.”

Eleven charged following Carlisle Utd match with Millwall (06-05-09)

Eleven men have been charged by police following the crunch match between Carlisle United and Millwall at the weekend.

They will now all appear before city magistrates after being arrested during a massive police operation to quell any potential trouble on Saturday.

More than 130 officers were on duty during the day, with some police on horseback, to identify problems and stop any major disorder flaring.

This followed previous trouble when the two clubs played in the city.

The eleven suspects – eight from Carlisle and three Millwall followers – were arrested and quizzed by officers.

They were later charged with offences including public disorder and being drunk and disorderly.

Those due to appear in court from Carlisle are:

Jonathan Attwood, 24, of Dalston Road, who is charged with being drunk and disorderly;
Stuart Salkeld, 31, of Stockwell Road, Blackwell, who is charged with being drunk and disorderly and possessing an offensive weapon;
Keith Green, 51, of Welsh Road, Harraby, who is charged with being drunk and disorderly;
Stephen Wright, 28, of Marina Crescent, Currock, who is charged with being drunk and disorderly;
Luke Bell, 19, of Millriggs in Corby Hill, near the city, who is charged with public disorder;
Paul Frizzel, 37, of Bedford Road, off Dalston Road, who is charged with public disorder;
Michael Anderson, 31, of Hespeck Raise, Durranhill, who is charged with public disorder;
Michael Cameron, 20, of Eldon Drive, Harraby, who is charged with being drunk and disorderly.
They will all appear at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, May 14.

The three Millwall supporters will appear before the same court on Thursday, May 21.

Police are also set to apply for football banning orders for any following convictions. They can bar hooligans from soccer stadiums.

United won Saturday’s game 2-0 in front of a crowd of nearly 9,500.

In combination with results elsewhere it saw the club saved from relegation to League Two.

Wigan Athletic - Bolton Wanderers - 02/05/2009

Source: english press (thanks to the sender)

Bolton fan knocked unconscious by hooligans

A BOLTON Wanderers fan was knocked unconscious when football hooligans threw advertising boards on to supporters during the Wigan Athletic match.
The incident happened in the Bolton section shortly after kick off at Saturday's game at the JJB Stadium.
Several fans were injured and one needed stitches after being hit by the hoarding.
The club is now appealing for Wanderers fans to come forward with information so the culprits can be dealt with by police.
Bolton fan Alan Houghton, from Bradshaw, was grazed by the board but said at least two other fans suffered cuts to the head.
Mr Houghton, aged 56, who goes to many of Bolton’s away games said he thought the behaviour of some fans had got worse in recent years.
He added: “Someone could have been really badly hurt. I am presuming it was people who had had too much to drink but that sort of behaviour has no place in football.
“I just hope someone will come forward and tell police who was responsible. I don’t know if there is any CCTV but I’d like to think the police will be able to catch these people and will be banned from future matches. They are obviously not real fans.”
Wanderers fan liaison officer, Tony Kelly saw the incident from the commentary box.
He said: "There is no place for mindless thugs like this in football. There were young children and families sitting in the stand and someone could have been seriously injured.
“I have had a number of phone calls already about this incident. I have heard of at least four or five fans getting injured and a close friend of mine was actually knocked unconscious.
“We know who some of the perpetrators are and it is now just a case of getting enough evidence to bring charges so we really need people to come forward.”
The club is liaising with the police.

Football violence at station

HUDDERSFIELD Town fans clashed with Leeds United supporters in a railway station brawl.
The rival fans were involved in a disturbance at Wakefield Westgate station as they travelled back from their respective games on the final day of the League One season on Saturday.
Town’s fans had been at the 1-1 draw with Leyton Orient at the London club’s Brisbane Road ground in East London.
The Leeds supporters had watched their side beat Northampton 3-0 at Elland Road.
It is believed the two sets of fans clashed after Town’s contingent got off the train in Wakefield at about 10.30pm.
Marcus Middleton, of the Town Supporters’ Club, had not been at the game but was told of the trouble.
He said: “As far as I understand it, there were about 40 Town fans who had been drinking through most of the day.
“When they got to Wakefield, the Leeds fans were there.”
He said it was not an organised fight and claimed the Town supporters had been the unsuspecting victims of an attack.
Police were called to the station.
It is not believed anyone was seriously hurt.

Leeds United: Yob who punched police dog spared jail - 07/05/2009

Source : Yorkshire Evening Post

A supporter who punched a police dog in the head when trouble flared after a Leeds United v Millwall clash has been spared jail.
A police handler instructed his dog to bite 39-year-old Michael Reilley, who was in a mob charging at police, Leeds Crown Court heard.

Prosecutor, Jonathan Sharp said that as the dog bit Reilley he punched the dog in the head using a "full swing" of his right hand.

The punch caused the dog to release its grip on Reilley.

The incident was captured on CCTV as police tried to hold back a mob of hooligans trying to get at Millwall fans kept in the ground after the match at Elland Road on October 27, 2007.

Mr Sharp said Reilley, who was shouting abuse, swearing and threatening officers, was part of a crowd police were trying to clear from Wesley Street.

Reilley was spotted making "come on" gestures to police during a lull in the trouble.

Mr Sharp said: "As a result of that the crowd erupted again."
Reilley was arrested after police publicised photographs taken of troublemakers during the incident.

Mr Sharp said a police officer with 20 years' experience described the level of determination shown by the mob "as high as anything he had witnessed, including the Bradford riots."

The Recorder of Leeds, Judge Peter Collier handed Reilley a 16-week prison sentence suspended for two years with 12 months' supervision.

Hearts fans facing lifetime ban for running onto pitch during Hibs clash

Season 08/09 - May Kbug4w

HEARTS will ban for life the supporters who invaded the Tynecastle pitch during last night's Edinburgh derby, but may still face sanctions from the Scottish Football Association.

Campbell Ogilvie, Hearts managing director and an SFA vice-president, today promised a full investigation into the events which resulted in two arrests and 15 ejections from the stadium following bad behaviour.

Trouble erupted after Derek Riordan's 79th-minute penalty for Hibs, which brought the game's only goal.

• Hearts fan pitch invader 'expected easy win'

He began celebrating in front of Hearts fans, resulting in a pitch invasion by angry supporters.

Hearts are now to study video footage of home supporters entering the field following the goal, including two from the Hibs end.

The angry supporters ran on to the pitch and one attempted to confront the Hibs forward as he celebrated, prompting referee Steve Conroy to step in.

The night's violence didn't end there, as Hibs captain Ian Murray was allegedly struck by a coin, understood to have been thrown by a Hearts fan.

Mr Ogilvie said: "The club will fully investigate the incident."

"We will take the necessary action against any supporter found guilty of an offence. Irresponsible behaviour will not be tolerated."

Hibs midfielder Ross Chisholm also claimed to have been grabbed by Hearts player Christian Nade.

He said: "I was going to celebrate with my team-mates and fans and one of their players comes over and assaults me. I did get a fright, he grabbed me by the throat. You do not do that to anyone in the street so you should not do it here."

Hearts' code of conduct for spectators states that anyone convicted of offences for misconduct will receive a life ban from Tynecastle.

Lothian and Borders Police confirmed that two males were arrested last night and are due to appear in Edinburgh Sheriff Court today.

Inspector Graham Low said: "There were 15 ejections from the game and their details have been noted by the clubs."

Concerns have been raised about security at the game, with Hibs manager Mixu Paatelainen, who asked for police protection at the dug-out during the game, also questioned if there were enough stewards. He said: "I felt there was quite a small number of stewards on that far side, I was surprised by that. It's a derby match, a volatile atmosphere. Players' safety is the most important thing but thankfully it was under control very quickly."

He also said there was inadequate protection near the away side's dug-out. He said: "There was no steward on the right-hand side and every time I went there I got quite a mouthful. It was just in case, to avoid things happening. I wanted to make sure nothing happened."

Riordan has been criticised for celebrating his goal in front of Hearts fans. Earlier this year, he was investigated by police over an alleged obscene gesture made to rival fans during another derby game.

He is unlikely to be investigated for last night's incident though, as no action was taken by the match referee.

A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE
THOUGH the 1980s saw some of the worst derby day crowd trouble, more recently games have been marred by pitch invasions and missiles.

In August 2003, around 20 Hibs supporters managed to get onto the pitch following a 1-0 win over Hearts. Hibs faced an SFA rap for the pitch invasion which followed Garry O'Connor's fifth-minute goal in a derby in March 2002.

Hearts striker Gary Wales was also hit by a cardboard cup full of cola and 11 fans were thrown out of Hibs' stadium.

Police were forced to move in to stop a pitch invasion at a match on February 20, 1994. Officers dodged flying punches and coins as they were jostled by 50 Hibs fans.
