Thirteen fans held before Rhyl clash
THIRTEEN football fans were arrested at the weekend before Rhyl’s European clash with Irish side Bohemians.
North Wales Police said the men were held on public order offences because of a fight in the town centre before Rhyl FC’s 4-2 Intertoto Cup defeat on Saturday.
Chief Inspector Rob Kirman said the men arrested were Irish fans who had come over without tickets and North Walians from outside Rhyl.
He said: “The majority of Bohemians fans at the game were very well behaved. The ones that we have arrested came without tickets.”
Football fans had criticised police for asking Rhyl’s pubs to shut for an hour after the game to discourage Irish fans from staying.
Fan Graham Stubbs said there had been no trouble at the first leg of the tie in Dublin the previous Saturday, which the Irish side won 5-1.
He said: “There was no trouble at all, it was a wonderful weekend. This is disgraceful. There’s no need for it all.”
Rhyl Fans’ Association vice-chairman Mike Jones said: “All the fans were mingling for a couple of pints and arranging to meet in Rhyl. Now they’re up in arms. Why can’t they police it like a normal Saturday night? ”
Dudley Arms barman Brian Drones said he had never known anything like it. He said: “They asked all the town’s pubs to close for an hour so they can get the Irish fans to the station.”
Chief Insp Kirman said the decision was a “sensible precaution” because of information about both sets of fans.

16 arrested as fans clash before Rhyl game
A BRAWL between forty yobs ended with 16 arrests by police in riot gear in Rhyl on Saturday.
Around 20 people believed to be from the Wrexham area were involved in the fight, before the 2.30pm kick-off at Rhyl FC’s European Intertoto Cup second leg match against Dubliners the Bohemians.
It is thought they may have travelled to the seaside resort for a pre-arranged battle with Irish visitors, but none were thought to be connected with Rhyl FC.
Police in riot gear made 16 arrests after they swooped in to quell the problems in and around the Queens Shopping Centre and on the High Street.
The meet-up between around 40 rivals stunned shoppers on the busy trading street.
Before the match police had advised a lockdown of pubs and off-licences after the game, following intelligence about potential troubles surrounding the fixture, which was won 4-2 by Bohemians, 9-3 on aggregate.
Police staged a major security operation at the game with officers in full riot gear on patrol to separate fans.
Richard Henderson, White Rose Centre shopping manager, said: “A gang ran riot in the Queen’s Centre before it spilled onto the street outside McDonalds.
“They were gravitating toward the White Rose Centre but the police stopped them in their tracks. Emotions were running high but the police handled the situation very well and were right on top of it.
“There were masses of officers here and a load of people were bundled into police vans and taken away.”
North Wales Police said 16 arrests were made before the match for various public order offences in Rhyl town centre.
It is not thought anyone was injured.
But events quietened down and the match and pub lockdown passed peacefully.
A spokesman from pub Caskeys said: “The atmosphere here was totally different to what we have heard about in the town centre. There were around 70 fans here before the game and 200 after.
“They were the real fans and there was not an ounce of trouble all night.”

There was no sign of injuries and it was not clear if the police used rubber bullets or blanks in the incident at the Plaza Canovas de Castillo in front of the Thyssen Museum in central Madrid.
Tens of thousands of ecstatic Spanish fans partied into the night in central Madrid in an otherwise friendly atmosphere to celebrate the country's first major international football trophy in 44 years.
At the Plaza Canovas de Castillo, fans also danced in the Neptune Fountain.

| Mild punishment for drunken British hooligans - 18/06/2008
Source: http://www.eurotopics.net
For some time now the number of complaints about drunken British tourists in the Latvian capital of Riga has been increasing. Now a policeman has been beaten up. The Latvian newspaper is appalled that the perpetrators have been released from custody: "This was not a case of disrupting the public order, it was a crime. The men had blood alcohol levels of 1.5 per mille, but they still knew what they were doing. It is also questionable whether they would have attacked a uniformed police officer who was just doing his job if they had been in central London. And moreover it is questionable whether the district court in Riga would have granted bail and allowed the perpetrators to go free without serving a prison sentence if they had been Latvians. 8,000 lat (11,400 euros) is a laughable amount in such a case."

| Chester vs Chesterfield: Hooligans sentenced for pre-match clash- 20/06/2008
Source : http://www.chesterchronicle.co.uk/
A FOOTBALL hooligan has been jailed and banned from watching Chester City for six years for his part in a city centre clash.
Trouble flared before City’s first game of last season when rival Chesterfield fans clashed with home supporters in the city centre on August 11, 2007.
The violence began at about 1.30pm at Kaleyards, near the Frodsham Street car park.
On Friday, three Chester City supporters and 16 Chesterfield FC fans were sentenced for affray and using threatening or intimidating behaviour at Chester Crown Court.
CCTV footage of the brawl showed several of them throwing bottles, branches and punches in broad daylight.
Chester fans Adam Futcher, 21, of Greenfields, Upton, Brian Curtis, 40, of Browning Close, Blacon, and Dale Cooper, 21, of Olivia Street, Bootle, Liverpool were sentenced with 16 Chesterfield supporters.
Both Futcher and Cooper had been before the same judge, Nicholas Woodward, in 2005, following a clash between Chester and Wrexham fans outside Chester railway station.
Futcher, a window cleaner, was at the front of the group of Chester fans and admitted punching two people, breaching an ASBO.
Judge Woodward told him: “You can be seen beckoning the Chesterfield fans to come over. When they do you are involved in direct violence.”
Convicted of affray, he was jailed for 12 months and handed a six-year football banning order.
Curtis was convicted of the lesser public order offence.
Curtis was given a three-year football banning order and ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work and pay £250 prosecution costs.
Cooper, seen throwing a large stick which did not hit anybody, received a 12-month prison term, suspended for two years. He was also given a two-year supervision order, told to attend the substance-related offending programme, handed a six-year football banning order and must pay £250 prosecution costs.
Of the 16 Chesterfield fans arrested, 12 were convicted of affray and four of public order offences.

| Lithuania - Estonia - Baltic Cup - 01/06/2008Source : http://www.alfa.lt Baltic football riotsLithuanian football fans rioted in the Latvian resort city of Jurmala during and after the football game between Lithuanian and Estonian teams late on Saturday, reported Latvian Football Federation spokesman Martins Hartmanis. "The municipal police did not manage to control the crowd, therefore police special unit was asked for help," said Hartmanis. Six Lithuanian football fans were arrested and several people were taken to the hospital. Meanwhile, the police reported that one football fan has been detained during riots. The police received a call after drunken Lithuanians had damaged two cars. Two criminal procedures have been launched. Lithuanian football fans vandalized seats at the stadium and lightly injured policemen who tried to prevent the riot. The Lithuanian football fans had fights with the Estonians after the game. At the end of the game the Lithuanian team managed to hit a goal, and three Estonian fans ran onto the field. Lithuanian fans began jumping on chairs, breaking them. When the police tried to stop them, they were hit with fragments of chairs, injuring policemen. About 100 chairs are broken, and the toilets of the new stadium vandalized. Clashes between Lithuanian and Estonian football fans continued when the game was over and they left the stadium. According to the federation, about 300 Estonian fans and about 150 Lithuanian fans had arrived to the games. The police detained three Estonians and one Lithuanian, but later released them as they had not been the rioters. There were no incidents during the Lithuanian-Latvian game on Sunday. The Lithuanian Football Federation (LFF) is prepared to compensate damages to Latvia's sea resort town Jurmala's stadium. "Representatives of the Latvian Football Federation requested compensation for 86 chairs broken by Lithuanians in the stadium. An official letter has been handed in to Director of Lithuanian national teams Robertas Tautkus. Damages will have to be covered", LFF Spokeswoman Vaiva Zizaite told the Baltic News Service In its first match of this year's Baltic Cup, the Lithuanian national team scored a 1:0 victory against the Estonian team, which lost the second game in a row. A riot broke out in the stadium after the winning goal by Valerijus Mizigurskis during the 87th minute, at which time three Estonian fans ran out onto the field and their Lithuanian counterparts started jumping on the stadium's chairs. "Such behavior on the part of our fans is not justifiable. Another two buses filled with fans arrive to Riga today. I hope such an incident will not repeat itself", Zizaite said. The final game of the Baltic Cup will be between the Lithuanian and Latvian teams. ******************************** Latvia to seek compensation after stadium violenceSource : Reuters Baltic Cup hosts Latvia will seek compensation from Lithuania and Estonia after fans tore up sections of a stadium on Saturday. Lithuanian fans clashed with police and tore up some 100 seats in a stadium in the seaside resort of Jurmala, about 20 km (12 miles) from the Latvian capital Riga. "The Latvian Football Federation will ask the Lithuanian and Estonian football federations to pay compensation for the damage done at the stadium and to the police," the Latvian association said in a statement. The incident happened just as the match, won 1-0 by Lithuania, was ending. | |
