Police arrest nearly 200 fans after Libertadores final - 29/01/2001

Source: Reuters

Almost 200 fans of South American champion Boca Juniors were arrested and detained overnight for offenses committed at Thursday night's Libertadores Cup final or in the celebrations which followed, police said.
"There were 150 arrested for causing criminal damage or disobeying authority, 11 for drugs offenses and one for counterfeiting tickets," said federal police spokesman Carolina Altamirano on Friday.
"Later, during the celebrations, 28 were arrested for causing criminal damage," she said.
Television pictures showed angry fans clashing with police outside the Bombonera stadium in the working-class neighborhood of La Boca after being unable to get in to see the second leg of the final against Mexico's Cruz Azul.
Police used teargas to disperse supporters and play was held up for six minutes in the first half after it drifted across the pitch.
Boca lost the match 1-0, making the score 1-1 on aggregate, but won the title on a penalty shootout.
After the match, thousands of fans flocked to the Obelish landmark in the city center, damaging nearby shops. Two schools near the stadium were also seriously damaged, police said.
Others drove through the city, hooting their car horns and waving giant Boca flags from the windows.
Inside the stadium, supporters responded to appeals from the club not to invade the pitch at the end of the game, enabling the team to receive the trophy and complete a lap of honor.
Argentine supporters traditionally celebrate title-winning performances by invading the pitch en masse at the final whistle and attempting to strip the players of their kit.

Steward hurt in cricket chaos - 17/06/2007

Source: BBC

A cricket steward has been taken to hospital suffering suspected broken ribs and other injuries after a pitch invasion marred Pakistan's victory over England.

Hundreds of fans charged onto the Headingley pitch and England captain Alec Stewart took the unusual decision to concede the game on "safety grounds" with Pakistan still two runs short of their 157 target.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said disorder continued around the Leeds ground after the match and officers made several arrests.

The scenes at the NatWest Series game have been condemned as "disgraceful" by players and pundits alike.

High-tech stumps

The injured steward was hurt as he attempted to protect Headingley's high-tech stumps from supporters, and was carried from the playing area on a stretcher.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Some people have been arrested. Exact numbers are not clear at this stage.

"There has been some damage at the ground."

Later, another spokesman said the situation had calmed down.

Former England coach David Lloyd branded the invasion "a mad stampede" and said he feared it would lead to calls for perimeter fencing to be introduced for one-day internationals.

An England and Wales Cricket Board spokesman said the steward had been kicked and suffered multiple injuries.

"He was knocked to the ground and he was kicked. He has two broken ribs and he has suffered some damage to his spleen and he is being kept in hospital overnight."

Inquiry

Chris Hassell, chief executive of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, which staged the match, said it would hold an inquiry into events surrounding the invasion.

"We are looking into the issues now and we will be having a review in the next 24 hours to look at the situation," he said.

Coventry: Police want to quiz fans - 15/06/2001

Source: Coventry Evening Telegraph

DETECTIVES investigating football-related violence close to Coventry City's Highfield Road ground have released pictures of two men they want to identify. Det Con Craig Wooldridge said police believed the two fans were involved in violent disorders before and after home games. They were filmed by police as part of an ongoing operation to clamp down on football hooliganism. The first picture is taken from a police film taken outside the Highfield Road ground on November 4, when City played Manchester United. The second is from the Coventry versus Leicester City game on December 10. Police filmed fans outside the Beer Engine pub in Far Gosford Street. Detectives are keen to speak to both men. A total of 11 other Coventry City fans were today due to appear at Coventry Crown Court, as part of the same police operation. The charges range from affray to violent disorder and relate to incidents at both the Leicester and Manchester United games, as well as the Coventry v. Tottenham match on October 14. Det Con Wooldridge said another person had handed himself in to police and was expected to be questioned next week.
