Zambia - Congo - 02/06/2007

Source : Reuters

Stampede kills 12 after Zambia soccer match

A stampede in Zambia killed 12 soccer fans and injured many others after a match between the home team and Congo Brazaville late on Saturday, police said on Sunday.
Copperbelt police chief Antonnell Mutentwa told Reuters 46 soccer fans were injured and admitted in hospital in the copper mining town bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), 450km (280 miles) north of Lusaka.
Mutentwa said fans were trampled underfoot by fellow soccer supporters as they rushed to leave the stadium after Zambia beat Congo Brazaville 3-0 in an African Cup qualifier.
Mutentwa said the cause of the stampede was unclear, though one witness said it had been caused by people rushing to get aboard free transport. Police launched an investigation.
Some people were kept at the Konkola mine hospital with serious injuries, while 26 others were discharged after receiving treatment, Mutentwa said.
"Some fans suffered serious injuries and are still in hospital for treatment and observation while those with minor injuries were treated and later discharged last night," he added.
Zambia played Congo in a must-win game in Chililabombwe to revive hopes of qualifying for the final rounds in Ghana. Its largest stadium, in the capital Lusaka, had been declared unfit by the government to host international matches.
A witness told Reuters by telephone from the nearby town of Kitwe that the stampede occurred when fans started to rush out for buses which had been provided to ferry soccer fans from other parts of the mineral-rich region.
"There was a rush for free transport which took place and caused a major backlash which led to the deaths of the soccer fans," the witness said.
In 1997, 10 soccer fans died in a stampede at the Independence Stadium in Lusaka after Zambia beat Sudan 3-0 in a World Cup qualifying match for France in 1998. That disaster was triggered by a supporter who told other fans there was a bomb about to explode in the stadium.

'Liverpool fans are the worst in Europe' - 03/06/2007

Source: Reuters

Liverpool supporters have been identified as the worst behaved at European matches in a report to be handed by UEFA to the British Government in Brussels on Tuesday.

The report, which has been compiled by undercover police agents from a neutral European force over the last four years, will be given by UEFA president Michel Platini to British sports minister Richard Caborn.

UEFA spokesman William Gaillard told Reuters: 'The incidents involving Liverpool fans have been well known to us before the trouble at the Champions League final which involved Liverpool fans last week.

'That was just the latest example. What other set of fans steal tickets from their fellow supporters or out of the hands of children? We know what happened in Athens, and Liverpool fans were the cause of most of the trouble there.

'There have been 25 incidents involving Liverpool fans away from home since 2003 and these are in the report -- most teams' supporters do not cause any trouble at all.'

Problems occurred at the Champions League final when fans with forged tickets and even without any ticket gained entry to the Olympic Stadium for the match against AC Milan, while dozens of fans with genuine tickets were refused entry.

When Liverpool fans did try to gain entry the situation threatened to escalate out of control and the Greek police fired tear gas and used batons.

Liverpool have submitted their own report to UEFA which criticises the security arrangements for the final.

Gaillard added: 'You must ask yourself why at the same match, with the same conditions, there was no trouble with the Milan fans - only the Liverpool fans.'

Liverpool fans were held responsible for the disaster at the 1985 European Cup final at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels when 39 mainly Italian fans died after a wall collapsed following a charge by Liverpool fans before the match against Juventus.

The tragedy led to English clubs being banned from European competition for five years.

Denmark - Sweden - 02/06/2007

Source: Reuters + danish press

Denmark fought back from three goals down to draw 3-3 with Sweden in a Euro 2008 Group F qualifier on Saturday which was abandoned a minute from time after a fan attacked referee Herbert Fandel.

The result will not be confirmed until an investigation by UEFA's disciplinary committee following receipt of the referee and delegate reports, UEFA said on their Web site.

Local media announced somewhat prematurely that Sweden had been awarded the match 3-0, but the outcome cannot be decided until the disciplinary committee have ruled on the matter.

The fracas began after Denmark's Christian Poulsen was sent off just before the end of the game for striking Markus Rosenberg in the Danish penalty area.

Fandel signalled a penalty for Sweden, but before it could be taken, a supporter rushed onto the pitch and struck out at the German who handled last week's Champions League final between AC Milan and Liverpool.

Fandel immediately blew the whistle and walked off the pitch.

At least two more supporters managed to force their way onto the pitch in the minutes just after the incident.

Sweden rushed into a 3-0 lead after 26 minutes with Johan Elmander scoring twice and Petter Hansson adding the other.

Denmark fought back with goals from Daniel Agger, Jon Dahl Tomasson and Leon Andreasen who made it 3-3 15 minutes from time.

'This was supposed to be a soccer party,' Danish goalie Thomas Sorensen told Reuters after the cancellation. 'But then these two ill tempered incidents happen and that is really an anti-climax.'

This was a game that was perhaps too entertaining but that ended very tragically,' Swedish coach Lars Lagerback told Swedish television after the match.

'You don't know what kind of people they are (that run onto the pitch) and what they have in their pockets,' Sweden's assistant coach Roland Andersson told Swedish national TV.

****************************************************************************************
COPENHAGEN, June 4 (Reuters) - The drunken Danish fan who attacked referee Herbert Fandel who then abandoned Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier between Denmark and Sweden, apologised to his countrymen for spoiling their chances of making it to next year's finals.
"I so want to say I'm sorry to everyone in Denmark. I spoiled a fantastic evening for so many," the 29-year-old Dane told Danish paper Ekstra Bladet in an interview.
The man, identifed only as "R" by the paper, cannot be named for legal reasons but said at a court hearing he had drunk 15 to 18 beers before the match and had little memory of the actual incident.
He did remember he was angered by Fandel handing a red card to Denmark's Chritian Poulsen and wanted to tell the referee his decision to dismiss the player was "nonsense".
Denmark had rallied from 3-0 down to 3-3 but the match was abandoned in the 89th minute when he jumped over the low fence at the Parken Stadium and headed straight for Fandel just after he awarded Sweden a late penalty.
He then struck out at the refree, before he was fended off by Danish players. He made it back to the stands before being seized by match stewards and later police.
The man that Ekstra Bladet called "the most hated and probably also the unhappiest in Denmark," told the paper he still had difficulties believing it had happened.
"I haven't slept all night in my cell. The last thing I ever wanted was to hurt the national team and I hope someday I will have the chance to apologise in person for what I did to the referee," he said.
UEFA's Control and Disciplinary panel will meet later this week to decide whether to allow the match to stand at 3-3, replay the game, or award a victory to Sweden.

Scandinavian press in uproar after pitch invasion - 03/06/2007

Source: Reuters

Danish and Swedish newspapers were uncompromising over Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier, lashing out at the fan who attacked referee Herbert Fandel and at security arrangements at Parken stadium.

Denmark had rallied from 3-0 down to 3-3 but the match was abandoned in the 89th minute when a fan wearing a Danish jersey rushed onto the pitch and assaulted Fandel after he awarded Sweden a penalty.

'42,000 spectators were witnesses to Danish football's black day. A day where Denmark's self-image as a restrained and decent football crowd was jeopardised by a fool without self control,' Jyllands-Posten wrote on Sunday.

The trouble began when Dane Christian Poulsen was sent off for punching Markus Rosenberg in the penalty area.

Fandel awarded a penalty to Sweden but before it could be taken a man rushed on to the pitch and attacked the German referee. Danish players stepped in and Fandel then blew the whistle and walked off the pitch.

Danish media on Sunday identified the attacker as a 29-year-old Dane living in Sweden and reported he was released after a hearing early on Sunday.

The result of the Group F tie will not be confirmed until an investigation by UEFA's disciplinary committee.

But the Danish Football Association (DBU) said it would not protest if UEFA gave Sweden victory and DBU general secretary and UEFA disciplinary committee member Jim Hansen said he thought victory would be awarded to Sweden.

That would leave Denmark struggling even more badly in fourth place.

Jyllands-Posten criticised the safety arrangements at Parken saying in an editorial it was depressing to think how serious the consequences for Denmark could be, but praised Fandel's decision to abandon the match.

Police said the aftermath had been relatively calm in Copenhagen, although 32 people were arrested near the stadium and in central parts of the city.

Russian spies plan crowd trouble at vital match - 04/06/2007

Source : terrace.splinder.com

Season 06/07 - June 24075222

RUSSIAN spies are plotting crowd violence at Wednesday's England versus Estonia game.

The feared SVR intelligence service - successor to the defunct KGB - is understood to have infiltrated neo-Nazi gangs to spark trouble on the terraces.

Estonian authorities say they have evidence of a Russian plot - designed to cripple the neighbouring host country's booming tourist trade - and are working to expel embassy staff in capital Tallinn.

Around 1,500 England fans are expected to travel to the former Soviet republic for the crucial European qualifier. The intelligence has been passed to UK police who have already flown out to spot known soccer hooligans. Last night a senior western diplomatic source said: "The Kremlin and the SVR are working flat out on Estonia. The aim is to undermine the credibility of Estonia as a power and show how strong modern-day Russia can be."
Unrest could cripple Estonia's trade in weekend breaks and cruises - and leave it open to exploitation by Moscow.

Liverpool Fans Not The Worst - Platini - 06/06/2007

Source: sportinglife.com

UEFA president Michel Platini has denied Liverpool fans are the worst-behaved in Europe while his organisation's spokesman William Gaillard has been called a "clown" by the Anfield club's co-owner Tom Hicks.

Gaillard, who enraged Liverpool earlier in the week by referring to a dossier of 25 incidents involving the club's fans at European matches, has also been called on to resign by a Liverpool fans group official.

Gaillard had said: "We know what happened in Athens, and Liverpool fans were the cause of most of the trouble there.

"There have been 25 incidents involving Liverpool fans away from home since 2003 and these are in the report - most teams' supporters do not cause any trouble at all."

Gaillard confirmed the dossier would be handed to the Government's Minister of Sport, Richard Caborn, at a meeting with Platini in Brussels on Tuesday.

But after that meeting had taken place, Platini intimated he did not think Liverpool's fans were the worst-behaved in Europe.

When asked if Liverpool fans were the worst-behaved in Europe, Platini replied, "No."

Platini declined to elaborate further, and UEFA were not willing to release the contents of the dossier, but the day of confusion will have done nothing for the image European football's governing body on Merseyside.

Hicks had stepped into the row over the organisation of the Champions League final in Athens and the behaviour of Liverpool fans, some of whom stole tickets from fellow fans while others charged the gates to force their way into the ground in scenes of chaos that ended with Greek police using tear gas.

Gaillard had made his comments about Liverpool fans' behaviour in Europe in the wake of constant criticism about the organisation of the final between Liverpool and AC Milan.

Hicks told Sky Sports News: "The UEFA man is a clown. The guy from UEFA doesn't know what he's talking about.

"UEFA did not handle this right at all. To give 17,000 tickets to the two teams, particularly knowing Liverpool are going to bring 40,000 fans, is insane.

"It's a classic case of a bureaucrat trying to take the pressure off himself. They didn't handle it right, they didn't have proper ticketing procedures and unfortunately there were counterfeit tickets.

"There were fans who paid their hard-earned money to get their tickets and they get to the stadium and are told there is no more room. Are they (the fans) mad? Sure they're mad."

The call for Gaillard to go came from Phil Hammond, spokesman for the Hillsborough Support Group, the organisation that acts for the relatives of the disaster of 1989, where Hammond lost a family member.

He said: "The faults at the Athens final were 10% the fault of Liverpool fans, 90% the fault of UEFA.

"UEFA should get their house in order, people are going to die at their football matches, I can say that as someone who has lost someone and someone who went through what happened in Athens.

"If something like that happens again, someone is going to die at one of their games. It will all be down to you.

"I agree with what Tom Hicks has said, the man is a clown to come out and say what he did. He is claiming Liverpool fans did this, that and the other, but not what UEFA did wrong.

"Nobody will now believe anything he says, they should get rid of him as a spokesman, he should go. He should have kept his mouth shut until they found out what really happened."

Following the meeting between Platini and Caborn, a working party will be set up by UEFA to look into suitable venues for major European finals, and Caborn has offered them help from the Football Licensing Authority, the body set up in the wake of the Hillsborough disaster.

Caborn told PA Sport: "We want to learn from the past and make sure we can have safe grounds for supporters.

"I suggested they set up a working party, which was well received by Mr Platini, and I have offered the expertise of the Football Licensing Authority who are respected on a worldwide basis.

"They will be looking at major European finals and I hope they can start setting some standards for clubs entering the competitions that they have to meet certain criteria.

"It was a very useful and constructive meeting with Michel Platini and he wants to make sure we do not have a repeat of events in Athens."

Reds skipper Steven Gerrard said his friends and family who went to the final in Athens found the organisation lacking.

Gerrard said: "It upsets me because we've travelled everywhere together for the six or seven years I've been in the first team.

"From what I've seen their behaviour has been fantastic. I had friends and family at the final. Their opinion was that the organisation wasn't good enough.

"But as far as I'm concerned the European Cup final has got to be in a bigger stadium with better organisation. Our set-up wasn't good enough either. Our hotel facilities weren't good enough."

Hunt for football hooligans - 07/06/2007

Source : Halifax Today

FOOTBALL hooligans who caused a match to be stopped before the final whistle are being hunted by police.
West Yorkshire Police are calling for the public's help and have released images of eight people believed to be involved.

They initially released 10 images but two of the men have since contacted police.

On Saturday, April 28, a pitch invasion occurred at Elland Road at the match between Leeds United and Ipswich Town. This led to the game been halted, although the match was later finished.

So far 11 people have been charged with public order offences.
Police have now issued a poster featuring a further 10 people they wish to speak to.

Detective Insp Phill Wright from City and Holbeck Police said: "We are appealing to anyone who may know who they are to let us know.

"You will not be asked to give evidence, we simply want to know who they are.

"If you see yourself in the poster, please contact your nearest police station immediately.

"There is no place for disorder of any kind in West Yorkshire and anyone involved in this type of offence will be tracked down and brought to justice."

As people from across the region attend the matches, West Yorkshire Police have made the photographs widely available.

Police prepare for derby battles - 05/06/2007

Source : Lancashire Evening Post

Football thugs are threatening to mar next season's Preston-Blackpool clash, the Evening Post can reveal.

Next season - thanks to Blackpool's promotion - the two sides meet for the first time since 2000, and yobs from both ends of the M55 are already using Internet message boards to threaten violence.

Blackpool hooligans are also warning they will look for trouble when they meet fellow Championship side Burnley next season, leading police to promise a "significant operation" at all games between the Lancashire rivals.

Preston's top officer Chief Supt Mike Barton said the PNE-Blackpool clashes "immediately featured" in planning for next season, with fans of each club savouring the opportunity to cause mayhem when the sides meet at both Deepdale and Bloomfield Road.

On one message board called Lancashire Lads, a Blackpool fan wrote: "PNE, you are gonna get done over next season. If I were you, I wouldn't walk the streets of Preston on a match day, never mind by the seaside."

A North End fan retaliated: "Come to Deepdale if you dare."

On another football forum a post called 'Blackpool Muckers ready to destroy PNE' adds: "All you Preston and Burnley scum best get ready for the shock of your lives."

And on a site dedicated to the Blackpool Muckers hooligan firm, a North End supporter calling himself PFP White Youth says: "If you think you will just come and take over then you're very mistaken and you'll find that out twice this season.

"Times have changed. You used to be able to come to Preston and take over, we accept that, but no more."

Chief Supt Barton of Preston police said: "Our job is to make sure decent fans can enjoy these derbies in safety. The history of these derbies means we will have to have a significant policing operation both at Deepdale and Bloomfield Road."

Police warning to football hooligans - 05/06/2007

Source : Bolton News

Police are warning football hooligans not to travel to Estonia for the Euro 2008 qualifier between England and Estonia tomorrow.

A number of fans are expected to travel from Manchester to the match in the Estonian capital Tallin.

Plain clothed football intelligence and uniformed police officers will be stationed at the airport to prevent known or potential troublemakers travelling to the match.

advertisementA spokesman said: "Greater Manchester Police will rigorously enforce banning orders, as part of Operation Ringlet, restricting the movements of known troublemakers.

"There are a number of routes fans can fly to attend the match and officers will be monitoring all options available."

Officers will also be working to identify potential new offenders. Police will apply for banning orders for people suspected of travelling to commit violence.

The Football Banning Order Authority (UKFBOA) has sent out letters to specific people who are subject to Banning Orders.

The recipients must follow certain courses of action, such as reporting to a police station on the day of the match and surrendering their passport. Any breaches of the conditions will be treated seriously.

Chief Inspector Chris Ullah from Manchester Airport Police Station said: "Anyone thinking of travelling to Estonia with the intention of causing trouble should think again.

"We will have plain clothes officers working to spot known trouble makers and uniformed officers will be providing a high-visibility presence at the airport, talking to fans.

"In previous operations, the majority of people approached by officers were genuine supporters who were co-operative and understanding about what we are doing. No-one wants to see a small minority of people spoiling the football for genuine fans."

Real fan view
Bastards charged 20 minutes after the players went, and didn´t let the fans to celebrate the title as usual.

The strongest attacks took place in Cibeles square (place of the celebration), and they attacked everyone, no matter who was it.

By that time me and some of the lads were up the street in Colon square (5 minutes away walking from Cibeles square), and as we noticed what was going on down in Cibeles we tried to reach the place, but we didn´t had to do that as bastards came all the way up the street with horses and vans, driving in a dangerous way just to disolve the fans, so we found them face to face in Colon square. A bit of throwing stuff went on untill they used those special guns they have.

However only one hour after the first charge in Cibeles, only a few lads stayed attacking the police in different streets, but there wasn´t an organised resistence against cops, so finally by 02.30 - 03.00 thing was up.

Once again the spanish bastards showed that they are the worst of western europe, and probably one of the worst in the whole continent.

CHAMPIONS!!

PS: 108 injured lads, and some cops as well.

Sweden: Football violence leads to 130 arrests - 20/06/2007

Source: http://www.thelocal.se (thanks to the sender)

Nearly 130 football supporters were arrested during the Stockholm derby match between arch-rivals Hammarby and Djurgården on Tuesday evening. Some 110 supporters were kept in cells overnight, suspected of rioting and vandalism.

The violence started in Östermalms Torg in central Stockholm. Hammarby supporters turned up to the square in a genteel part of town a couple of hours before the match. The square is a traditional meeting point for Djurgården fans.

"The area to which they turned up has been subjected to vandalism," said police spokeswoman Towe Hägg.

Large numbers of police were deployed to keep the two sides apart.

Djurgården fans were kept inside The Londoner pub against their will.

"Police have locked a large number of Djurgården fans here in the restaurant - I don't dare go out; I'm staying in the kitchen," one staff member at the pub told news agency TT at the height of the disturbances.

Three windows at the pub were broken, as was a large number of glasses. But the pub's manager blamed the police, rather than supporters, for the incidents.

"There has never been violence before. This would never have happened if the police had not tried to keep them in," he said.

Police told the supporters that they could go to the stadium if accompanied by police along a special route. The fans refused, and police decided therefore to keep them in the pub.

"We didn't want them to come out and start fighting the Hammarby fans," said Diana Sundin of Stockholm Police.

Those fans who were arrested were taken to various police stations in the Stockholm area. Prosecutors decided to keep 110 of them in detention, according to police.
