Hooligans returning to football matches - 01/06/2016
Source : http://www.pressherald.com/
Incidents throughout Europe have caused concern for officials as Euro 2016 approaches.
Hooliganism is making a comeback, and the timing could be bad with four high-risk matches in the first week of the European Championship in a country where the police force is already under a huge strain.
Should one or more of these matches – England vs. Russia in Marseille on June 11; Turkey vs. Croatia the next day; and England vs. Wales and Germany vs. Poland on June 16 – descend into violence, the soccer itself could quickly become overshadowed.
Police forces in France have been stretched since November’s terror attacks that killed 130 people.
The last thing French authorities need is thugs causing mayhem. But in the last two months alone there’s been a soccer violence increase around Europe.
At the French Cup final, fans managed to sneak flares and objects into the Stade de France despite a security wall and triple security checks, and others tried to invade the field, raising serious concern ahead of Euro 2016, where the opening match between France and Romania takes place June 10.
In Germany, several hundred fans from Dynamo Dresden were held back by riot police to stop them attacking bitter rivals Madgdeberg in a third-division match in April, and mass arrests were made in May during the troublesome local rivaley between Frankfurt and Darmstadt.
In the League One playoff final Sunday in London, fights broke out among supporters; Rangers and Hibernian fans poured onto the field to fight in the Scottish Cup final at Glasgow – a throwback to the mid-1980s when hooliganism blighted Britain – Liverpool and Sevilla fans traded punches in the Europa League final in Switzerland; FC Zurich thugs charged down the tunnel last Wednesday to try to attack their own players following relegation from the Swiss Super League, then battled riot police outside.
Although centered on inter-club rivalries, these troubles highlight how hooliganism has been creeping back after several years.
In November, 2014, Francisco Javier Romero Taboada, 43, a Deportiva fans in Spain, died after emergency services rescued him from a river where he was dumped after being heavily beaten during a fight against rival hooligans from Atletico Madrid.
This season the Europa League was hit with violence. Heavy fighting at night between Italian side Napoli and Polish club Legia Warsaw, street battles between Spanish side Athletic Bilbao and Marseille; city center riots in Amsterdam between Ajax and Turkish club Fenerbahce. Other trouble involved Lech Poznan from Poland; Belgian side Anderlecht, and Moscow-based sides CSKA, Lokomotiv and Dinamo.
A further 10 matches at Euro 2016 are identified as risky – including Germany vs. Ukraine; Slovakia vs. England and Russia vs. Wales – and there will be increased border controls and tighter security at train stations and airports, in addition to eight police spotters from each country who will identify potential hooligans.
“All of those who are subject to a banning order will be prevented from leaving their country by their local police in so far as their legislation allows,” said Antoine Boutonnet, the head of French police’s anti-hooliganism division. “Furthermore, we have gathered information on potential risks and will continue to do so during the tournament.”
But hooligans show determination and ingenuity to avoid police detection.

'Bring on the REAL hooligans' France's top casual can't wait for England fans at Euro 2016 - 02/06/2016
Source : http://www.dailystar.co.uk/
FRANCE's top football hooligan has said he can't wait to see some real hooligans when Euro 2016 kicks off.
Guillaume Bacchieri AKA Biba is revered as one of French football's hardest casuals.
He heads up of one of France's most feared firms, BSN, who follow Nice home and away in the French first division.
Their logo is a skull pierced with a bloody dagger and the firm has been known to set off flares and brawl with opposition supporters and police.
But Biba, who has followed his club all over Europe, is now looking forward to seeing real hooligans come to France.
"The Russians, the English, the Dutch – these are real hooligans", said the rock-hard casual.
Biba who has been banned from Nice's stadium until December says he studies opposition ultras on the internet.
And he doubts that the French police will be able to cope with the influx of hooligans.
"How can (the police) organise the Euros when we can't even manage 200 Nice fans?," he added in an interview with VICE Sports.
"When 10,000 Turkish fans come to Nice, what are they going to do?
"That's going to be another level."
It is not the first time England fans have been targeted by rival supporters.
Slovakian and Russian hooligans have also laid down the gauntlet ahead of the tournament.
French security is already on high alert due to violent industrial strikes taking place throughout the country.
There is also believed to be an increased threat from ISIS or other Islamist terror groups in the wake of the Paris attacks last year.

Euro 2016 : France minister denies reports on fan zones - 04/06/2016
Source : http://www.espn.co.uk/
A la fin mai, le préfet de Paris envisageait de fermer le site les jours de matchs en Ile-de-France, pour éviter qu'elle devienne le lieu d'affrontements entre hooligans. Depuis, les effectifs policiers ont été renforcés.
The Paris police chief wants more security staff to protect fans at the European Championship France's interior minister said on Friday.
Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, speaking to The Associated Press, denied a report that police chief Michel Cadot suggested closing the Paris fan zone any time there was a Euros match at either Paris stadium for security reasons.
"Mr. Cadot did not say that," Cazeneuve said in his first public comment on the report about possibly closing the fan zones. "Cadot informed me of the conditions under which he could organize it, meaning the extra staff necessary to be perfectly capable of ensuring security."
Paris is one of nine host cities in France for Euro 2016. Closing any Euro 2016 fan zone would contradict weeks of government insistence that authorities have security under control during the June 10-July 10 soccer tournament that mesmerizes Europe. An unprecedented 90,000 police, soldiers, private guards and others ensuring security will be involved, according to the French government.
Cazeneuve said French authorities "are working now on adjusting staffing to ensure maximum security." He did not say how many more security personnel Paris has asked for.
The French government has declined to give estimates for the overall cost of the security, though has said €24 million are being spent on fan zones in the nine cities.
He reiterated that authorities are ready for possible violent attacks or hooliganism.
"I cannot guarantee we will not have a confrontation with terrorists," Cazeneuve said at an event organized by the Danish Foreign Policy Society.
But he rejected calls to postpone or switch the tournament away from France.
"If we are doing that [calling it off], we are meeting the terrorists' will. We will never do that," he said.
In recent days, France has seen widespread flooding, strikes affecting rail traffic and causing gasoline shortages and violent labor protests since the government began pushing through a labor reform law.

Germany follows Russia to send policemen to Euro 2016 in France - 03/06/2016
Source : http://www.tass.ru/
Eight German police will be present at all of Germany’s matches to keep an eye on particularly rowdy fans and help settle potential problems.
A group of German police will participate in maintaining security at the national squad’s matches at the European Football Cup finals in France, the spokesman for the German police unit responsible for operations at sports events, Jan Schabacker, told the media on Friday.
Eight German police will be present at all of Germany’s matches to keep an eye on particularly rowdy fans and help settle potential problems. It is not ruled out that Germany will delegate more police to the match with Poland, due in Paris on June 16. Analysts do not rule out scuffles between fans.
A specialist on fan issues, Gunter Pilz, has warned that the match with Poland was fraught with special risks for security.
As Bouches du Rhone police prefect Laurent Nunez said earlier, Russian police would participate in maintaining law and order in Marseilles at the Russian-England encounter. British law enforcers have arrived in France, too. They will help their French counterparts "maintain order and spot and put under control football fans who pose potential risks."
France will host European Football Cup finals on June 10 - July 10. France’ anti-hooliganism department has analyzed the forthcoming games and identified a group of "high risk matches." The England-Russia clash in Marseilles due June 11 is on the list.

England : Birmingham City and Aston Villa thugs hit with prison sentences for cup violence - 05/06/2016
Source : http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/
Seven football fans have been jailed and banned from attending future matches after disorder at last year’s Aston Villa and Birmingham City derby clash.
The rivals met in the Capital One League Cup at Villa Park in a match classified by police as high risk.
Around 400 officers were drafted in on September 22 to keep the peace and the opposing supporters apart.
But before the match a 200-strong group of Birmingham City fans tried to break through a police cordon to reach rival supporters.
Birmingham Crown Court heard how police were subjected to abuse and spitting while missiles between the two sets of supporters rained down on them.
Following a police appeal six handed themselves into police and pleaded guilty to affray.
Aston Villa fan Harry Steward, 30, of Daw End Lane, Walsall, also admitted affray after being seen by police throwing a coin at Blues fans after Villa’s 1-0 victory. He was jailed for eight months.
Others jailed for eight months were; Daren Naven, 46, of Queslett Road, Great Barr, Arron Richards, 24, of Ridgewood, Shard End, Joshua Moore, of Warstoll Lane, Kings Heath, and Sean Timlin, 24, of Church Road, Yardley.
Jack Beddows, 20, of Kings Heath High Street, Birmingham, was sent to a Youth Offenders Institute for six months.
Dean Powell, 49, of Rickyard Piece, Quinton, received nine months because he entered a guilty plea at a later stage in proceedings.
Jailing the men Judge Patrick Thomas QC told them; “The incident we’ve seen reflects the behaviour of a mob fuelled by drink.
“Anyone seeing the footage we’ve seen would be appalled...I think you were as well.
“The threat level was high. Police were called upon to exercise calmness and discipline to prevent something much more serious happening.
“This could have escalated into something really really nasty.”
In a meeting with probation officers, Richards said; “It’s just a football match, we see it as banter but the police see it differently.”
His barrister, along with representatives for other men, said Richards was ashamed and sorry and urged the judge to hand down a suspended sentence.
All of the group were deemed a low risk of re-offence by probation officers.
But sending them to immediate custody Judge Thomas said; “I regret I cannot suspend the custodial sentences which must follow from this behaviour.
“Some of you have steady jobs while others have family responsibilities you take very seriously.
“That was for you to think about, nothing compelled you to do what you did.
“You could have stepped back, what you did you did with understanding.
“The police do a job and they are entitled to receive the protection and support of the courts when they do it.
“I deeply regret the effect this will on your lives and the lives of others.
“But nothing on earth made you behave the way you did and you must bear the consequences of it.”
The group of Birmingham City supporters were being led from Witton train station to the North Stand which had been designated the away end.
But as they passed gates by the North Stand some of the group surged forward to reach rival fans.
Harinderpal Dhami, prosecuting, said police held the fans back and at one point had to wear riot helmets because of missiles.
The six Blues fans handed themselves into police following an appeal in the media.
Steward gave his name to police after being seen to throw a coin at rival fans.
He was arrested the following day.
All seven were handed football banning order keeping them away from matches for seven years.

Cauldron of Death: Euro 2016's hardest hooligans pitted together in massive melting pot - 06/06/2016
Source : http://www.dailystar.co.uk/
The Euro 2016 draw has pitted Croatia, Czech Republic, Spain and Turkey together in Group D – but it is off the pitch where tournament bosses will be casting a nervous eye.
All four nations have heaped shame on the football world in the past with their behaviour.
The match between Croatia and Turkey this Sunday at the Parc des Princes in Paris could be the most explosive match of the month-long tournament, starting this Friday.
England will meet Turkey in the last 16 if certain results go their way.
Euro 2016 bosses have identified five "sensitive games" in the group stages alone which could kick off.
England’s matches against Russia and Wales have been earmarked as “sensitive” with supporters from all three countries already goading each other online.
With terror fears at an all-time high, domestic strikes starving the country of fuel and migrants continuing to surge through from southern Europe as we reach peak summer, France is at breaking point.
And that is before the tournament has even started.
Organisers will be hoping they do not have to add ugly footie fan violence to their growing list of problems which could cripple France. Hooliganism in Croatia, Turkey and Czech Republic is rife in their domestic leagues.
And it is not unusual for their hot-headed supporters to try and make a name for themselves on the international stage either.
In 2014 Croatia fans threw flares onto the San Siro pitch in Italy forced the referee to pull the players off the pitch.
The Euro 2016 qualifier nearly had to be called-off mid-match.
All of Group D are infamous for their hooligans firms which were set up in the 70s and 80s.
Football hooliganism in Croatia hit an all-time low when an ultra leader kidnapped a Hadjuk Split fan and raped him with a broom handle for two days in the 1980s.
Football experts believed there are more than 30 organised gangs operating around football matches in Czech Republic alone.
Turkish fans have not been without blame.
From Galatasaray's "Welcome to Hell" banner greeting Manchester United in 1993, to the 2000 UEFA Cup semi-final when two Leeds United fans were stabbed to death, Turkish fans have caused football bosses headaches across the world.
Dr Nicolas Hourcade, an academic focusing on football culture, said: “The Turkey-Croatia match presents a large risk.
"The Turkish always bring huge numbers of supporters. There's an on-going spat between Turkish fans and Parisian hooligans,” referring to two clashes between Paris St Germain and Galatasaray fans in 1996 and 2001.
The latter was stopped for 25 minutes at the Parc des Princes after fighting broke out in the stands and several pitch invasions sparked chaos.
In Spain, the death of a Deportivo La Coruna supporter during running battles between supporters in November 2014 will live long in the memory.
Javier “Jimmy” Romero Taboda had to be fished out the river after fights began on Sunday morning four hours before his team’s match with Atletico Madrid.
The 43-year-old dad-of-two became the 11th person to have died in football-related violence in Spain since 1982.

Footie fan stripped naked and beaten for sitting in rival team's stand in shock clip
The man had bought a ticket for the game and was given a seat in the rival stand.
His team, Atlanta, were playing home side, Platens, at the Vicente Lopez stadium in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires.
The fan managed to keep his identity hidden despite being surrounded by hundreds of the opposing team’s fans.
But when the ref awarded Atlanta a penalty he could not help but celebrate.
Within seconds he is surrounded by a group of over 10 men who beat him as he lays on the ground.
The footage then leaps to the bewildered man being led out of the stands completely naked by the yob fans.
Once outside the stadium a police patrol took him to a nearby hospital where he was treated for head trauma.

Germany invites hooligans' victim to Euro 2016 opening game - 07/06/2016
Source : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/
The German football federation (DFB) has invited a former policeman who was brutally beaten by German soccer hooligans during the 1998 World Cup in France to the team's opening match of Euro 2016.
Daniel Nivel, whose head injuries were so severe he spent several weeks in a coma and never fully recovered, was attacked by several German fans in Lens on June 21, 1998.
Now the 61-year-old Nivel has been invited to be the DFB's guest of honor for Germany's Group C game against Ukraine in Lille on Sunday.
"He has been invited by the DFB and as far as I know he's coming," DFB spokesman Jens Grittner told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "He wants to stay in the shadows though, he doesn't want to do any media work or anything like that. But he's coming."
Nivel has been a guest of the German team before. In 2000 the DFB established the Daniel Nivel Foundation to investigate and attempt to curb violence in football, as well as to help victims.
Four of Nivel's attackers received prison sentences of between 3½ and 10 years.
"It was Germans who did this. We should never forget it," former DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach said on the federation's website.

Euro 2016 : Marseille chaos: England fans clash with French hooligans as Euro 2016 kicks off early - 09/06/2016
Source : http://www.dailystar.co.uk/
AT LEAST one England fan was seriously injured as fights broke out between rival supporters in Marseille – before Euro 2016 had even started.
The supporter was seen lying unconscious in a pool of blood after suffering a head injury in clashes broken up by riot police using tear gas and baton charges.
Fighting broke out near two bars where hundreds of England fans had spent Thursday drinking in the French city’s Old Port area.
Local French youths are thought to have attacked Three Lions' fans outside the Queen Victoria pub and O’Malley’s, an Irish bar next door, at 11.45pm on Thursday – 48 hours before Saturday's first group game between England and Russia.
One fan called Simon from Leeds said: "They were baiting us, and then attacked.
''None of the England fans were doing anything wrong – a few of us had a bit much to drink, but that was all.
"Suddenly a French gang appeared and started attacking us and throwing stuff.
"We had to defend ourselves, and then the police showed up."
Violence reportedly broke out after right wing French football fans – known as the "Marseille Ultras" – attacked England fans.
The French police then fired tear gas in a bid to disperse the mob.
The two groups then reportedly launched broken chairs and tables at each other.
Shocking footage shows French police attempting to break apart brawls with riot shields.
Ambulances were seen arriving on the scene just after midnight on Thursday.
Fans scattered in different directions, as restaurants and bars in the area quickly shut doors and pulled down shutters.
England fan Chris Lord, from London, said: "This was a really nasty attack.
"The gang knew exactly where we were, and clearly wanted to hurt us."
Witnesses report England fans were chanting: "ISIS, where are you?" and "We love you ISIS, we do."
The song refers to warning Islamic State may try to carry out a terror attack on fans at the tournment.
Fans scattered in different directions, as restaurants and bars in the area quickly shut doors and pulled down shutters.
England fan Chris Lord, from London, said: ‘This was a really nasty attack. The gang knew exactly where we were, and clearly wanted to hurt us.’
By the early hours police had blocked off roads around the Old Port, using dogs and vans to stop traffic getting through.
Meanwhile, gangs of local thugs could be seen taunting England fans who were trying to get back to hotels.
French fans accused English supporters of starting the trouble.
Marseille resident Nicolas, 26, told the Daily Star Online: "Several hundred, even thousands, of English – so-called "hooligans" – came especially to destroy everything.
"The police are overwhelmed and don't know what to do anymore."
Every pub in Marseilles has been barred from showing live games on huge outdoor screens.
At the 1998 World Cup scores of people were hurt, more than 100 arrested or deported and some England supporters jailed after violence flared before and after the Three Lions' clash with Tunisia in Marseille.

A HOO'S WHO Amazing portraits show the men who ruled the terraces in the 70s, 80s and 90s - 10/06/2016
Source : https://www.thesun.co.uk/
AT THESE are the faces of the hooligans who brought terror to the football terraces for decades.
The sinister portraits – released ahead of Euro 2016 – are part of a series from acclaimed photographer Simon Harsent.
His new work explores football hooliganism through petrifying portraits of the football firm leaders themselves.
Entitled GBH (Great Britain’s Hooligans) the series brings people face-to-scary face with some of the country’s most notorious hooligans.
Simon said: “It’s an examination of social discontent in Britain as the beautiful game presented an ugly face, and how the decisions of a few men 30 years ago have impacted their lives today.
“I’m not trying to glorify them or condemn them. These are portraits of people who chose one path in life and now have all turned their lives around.
“There is a written piece in the exhibition catalogue by my brother and co-collaborator on this project that talks to each of the guys about what was going on in their life at the time.
“It talks about the complexities of trying to generalise football hooligans, because there is no one single reason that young males are drawn to it.”
Although the men pictured all had different stories to tell about how they got involved in trouble, there was one common theme.
“One thing I did hear from a few of the guys was that it was like an addiction and if looked at like that I think we might perceive it in a different light,” revealed Simon.
“If you have other addictions such as drugs there are treatment programs but the so-called cure for a football hooligan is jail time.”
Riaz Khan of Leicester’s Baby Squad said: “Being part of a firm gave you that sense of belonging. I was always on the fringes when I was at school. I never belonged to any sub-culture or gang because I was Asian.
“When I was at school, racism was rife and gangs of boneheads would chase us just because of the colour of our skin.
“When I started following the Baby Squad, I felt protected and also brave because now we had lads who would defend you through thick and thin.
“!I felt invincible. I wasn’t a troublemaker – only at the football.”
Danny Brown, of Aston Villa’s C-Crew describes the beginnings of his firm and how it hit back at the rise of racism at football.
“The name C-Crew is short for ‘Corner Crew’, we took the name from the part of the Holte End where we stood and watched the matches from. We were the first multi-racial football crew in Britain – it brought together youths from different areas of Birmingham during the Eighties,” he said.
For Millwall’s Ginger Bob being part of a football firm appeared pre-destined.
He said: “You’re indoctrinated and brainwashed by your nearest and dearest.
“Everyone comes from the same few roads, it’s like an extended family and you’re representing your area.
“I went to a match in Feb 1967, just before I turned nine – I used to go with my dad. There was a bit of trouble and, even at a young age, I wanted to get involved. frothing at the mouth with eyes popping out of my head, but you can’t do much at that age.
“If there’s any fighting around you, you look for an opportunity to go up behind someone and give them a sly punch in the kidneys or kick them in the leg and then back off.
“You’re only a kid, but you want to do something for the cause.”
Many of those in the exhibition have since turned their lives around.
Cass Pennant has become a particularly prolific author and publisher and is now moving into film production.
Barrington ‘One-Eyed Baz’ Patterson focused his formidable physique, passion and drive into both mixed martial arts and kickboxing and became an IKF champion.
Danny Brown took time to involve himself in youth work in schools and youth centres, while the Baby Squad’s Riaz Khan gained an MA in English Language teaching and teaches at college and university.
Gary ‘Boatsy’ Clarke’s has featured on numerous documentaries and Jason Marriner continues to make his voice heard by speaking at various events around the country.

Euros ban for 78 hooligans - 10/06/2016
Source : http://www.blackpoolgazette.co.uk/
Almost 80 football hooligans have been ordered to hand over their passports during the Euro 2016 tournament, it emerged today.
Lancashire Police said 78 people across the county had been made to surrender their passports to prevent them travelling to any games.
Officers have spoken to 104 known troublemakers in the county who are currently subject to football banning orders. It is understood a nationwide ports operation is in place to stop anyone evading the ban and sneaking on to ferries or planes for the tournament, which started in Paris last night.
A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “ As part of the nationwide ports operation, officers across Lancashire have spoken to other individuals known to have previously been involved in football related violence or disorder and have been advised about the operation which may see them being prevented from travelling to France in a bid to prevent any disorder.”
It coincides with the force’s ‘Ugly Consequences of the Beautiful Game’ campaign, which aims to prevent an increase in domestic violence, alcohol related violence and road offences during the sporting event.
Additional officers will be on patrol around the county to help ensure match days pass off peacefully.
On Thursday night, one England fans was arrested alongside a local man after police used tear gas during a clash in Marseille. Police said one was arrested for assaulting a barman and the other for violent disorder.

England fans in fresh clashes with riot police in Marseille
England fans have clashed with police for a second day in the French port town of Marseille.
Supporters who had been drinking for most of the day at the Queen Victoria pub in the Old Port district threw bottles at French riot police, who used tear gas to disperse them.
The officers, who wore full riot gear, were seen marching towards hundreds of England fans who ran away down the street.
The clashes came after a night of violence in the city in southern France and just hours before the first game between the hosts and Romania in Paris.
One England supporter suffered a head injury in Thursday night’s brawl after being hit across the face with a wooden chair, and according to reports, some England fans were heard chanting: “Isis, where are you?”
Bare-chested England fans dodged the gas deployed by police as an afternoon of drinking and singing turned ugly.
Police with helmets, batons and shields grappled troublemakers to the ground amid beer bottles and rubbish strewn across the cobbled streets.
The supporters are in Marseille ahead of England’s game with Russia on Saturday.

After a relatively peaceful morning, violence erupted around 3pm. Around 60 riot police marched on fans as they congregated outside bars and hotels on the harbour.
It was unclear what sparked the tactic, but some fans responded by hurling bottles at the advancing police.
One man, believed to be English, appeared to have been knocked unconscious. A witness said that the victim had been kicked repeatedly in the head. The identity, or nationality, of the assailants is not known.
Nine people were arrested, including five who had travelled from England, on Friday, the second day of clashes between police and fans in Marseille.

Big russian action today when they arrived suddenly in a place, parallel to the old Marseille harbour. Russia-England 10-0. No doubt about the organisation and the idea to confront. No police reaction and old English faces who had to retreat.

One middle-aged England fan was knocked unconscious after the Russian hooligans charged at England supporters
Trouble between Russian and England supporters has flared up for the third successive day as the Old Port district in Marseille was left resembling a war zone.
Riot police have now fired water cannons into the crowd to try and quell the violence, with officers aiming blasts at England fans as they try to seal the dockside square by pushing rival supporters into surrounding streets.
As violence exploded in he Old Dock district on Friday and Saturday riot police and dog units relied on tear gas to disperse the crowd but the use of water cannons shows a step up in their presence as the battle between fans and locals shows no sign of stopping.
One England fan who had been knocked to the ground and kicked in the head during a clash with Russian fans is now fighting for his life in hospital.
The Russian hooligans, who reports say were armed with knives, charged at England supporters and set upon the middle-aged man, this afternoon.
The Provence newspaper reported: 'An England supporter is in between life and death. The man who is in his 50s, who received a number of blows to the head, is in a critical condition. He suffered a number of injuries.'

Russian hooligans hunt down England fans in sickening street battles in Marseille
Shocking scenes of violence have broken out again in Marseille as England and Russian fans have fought running battles in the streets.
A gang of 20 or so Russian fans all clad in black have been hunting the English in horrifying scenes - with one man filmed being punched and kicked on the ground as French police watched.
The Russian gang emerged from a side street and walked into main square.
They looked for English fans to fight but no-one would take them on. They then chased english everywhere.
One England fan was jumped by a gang of Russian hooligans after getting split up from his friends.
Three Lions fan Louise McMahon, from Redditch, Worcs, who came to the man's rescue, said: "The bloke was from London and in his 30s."We saw it happen.
He was on his own and then about five or six Russians just jumped him.
"They hit and kicked him and literally ripped his England shirt off his back. They nicked his iPhone and money too.
"The poor bloke was really shook up. We got him inside the bar where we were and he's going to be okay."
Cops in full riot gear with dogs and batons have moved in force against rival fans in the Old Port area of the city.
A middle-aged England fan was jumped by a group of Russians, who pinned him to the floor and stole his shirt. A local bar owner dragged him to safety.
Violence erupted in the main port area at around 4.15pm.
Riot police rushed a group of England fans out of a side street, sending crowds running.
The largest group of Three Lions followers in the square retaliated by throwing bottles at officers.
Mirror reporter Martin Fricker filmed footage of riot police throwing tear gas canisters and stun grenades into the crowd.
Snatch-squads of police hit both English and Russian fans with batons in another part of the marina.
Tweeting live from the scene fellow Mirror man Andy Lines said: "England fans throwing bottles at police also hit their own fans and the press - including me.
"A bottle of Heineken smashed into my leg but hit my phone charger in my pocket and didn't hurt at all.
"A terrified French family next to me fled in terror. They had two children one in a puschair.
"They looked disgusted as a I helped them to get down by the harbour and away from the danger.
"The dad just said: pourquoi? (Why?)"
Meanwhile gangs of local youths fought with England fans on the Rue Saint Saens, forcing bars to close their shutters.
Russian fans have reportedly charged at England fans as the rivals clash in the streets ahead of tonight's Euro 2016 match.
A middle aged England fan has been beaten unconscious as rival supporters clash.
Reports on the ground in the French city suggest the violence has been led by 'organised Russian hooligans.'
It comes after a group of England fans were ambushed by French hooligans in the city as they sat enjoying a beer in a picturesque square.
Video footage shows a group of thugs walk past the group of England supporters as they are sitting peacefully at a table enjoying food and drink.
But then one of the mob launches a bottle at the diners followed by a barrage of chairs and tables.
Police arrive and start to throw tears gas as some of the England fans retaliate.
There are fears tonight's match will see a repeat of Friday's chaos, which forced police to use tear gas as gangs from rival teams fought running battles in the streets of the French city.
At least 11 England fans have reportedly been arrested.
