Liverpool fans held in Bulgaria - 03/06/2005

Source : BBC NEWS

Two Liverpool fans who watched the Champions League final in Istanbul could be charged with attempted murder over an alleged attack in Bulgaria.

Michael S****** and Anthony W*****, both 18 and from Liverpool, had gone on to a Bulgarian resort after the game.

They were due to fly back to the UK on Sunday but were arrested along with two others by local police on suspicion of attacking a man a few hours earlier.

The alleged victim is believed to have been hit over the head with a stone.

One of the two other men was later released without charge while 19-year-old Bradley T*******, of Liverpool, was given bail but told to stay in the country.

Mr S****** and Mr W***** appeared at Varna District Court on Friday where a judge granted permission for them to be detained for a further 72 hours.

They face a possible charge of attempted murder.

Mr S******' father, also called Michael, said his son was innocent, adding: "This is supposed to have happened at 5am on the Sunday morning, but Michael and his friends went to bed at 2.30am.

"They were all in the same room and his friends have made sworn statements that Michael was with them.

"He's a good lad. He's never been in trouble with the law and he was training to work on the railways.

Fly to Bulgaria

"This is worse than a nightmare for our family, but we'll do everything in our power to prove Michael's innocence."

He added that he would be flying to Bulgaria to support his son.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "The two British men have not been charged with anything. They appeared in court and a judge granted an extra 72 hours so that the investigation may continue.

"A third man has been given bail but is not allowed to leave Bulgaria."

Boca Juniors - Chivas Guadalajara - 14/06/06

Source : AFP + Reuters

Boca game ends in shocking scenes (Reuters)

A Libertadores Cup tie between Boca Juniors and Guadalajara was abandoned in the second half on Tuesday after a supporter attacked a player, fans hurled missiles onto the pitch and the teams fought amongst themselves.
Play at Boca's Bombonera stadium was halted with the score at 0-0 in the 79th minute of the quarter-final second leg tie.
The Mexican side won the first leg 4-0.
Referee Martin Vazquez waited 20 minutes before attempting to restart play, then called the game off almost immediately as a mass of fans gathered ominously behind the Guadalajara goal.
They were apparently preparing to pelt visiting goalkeeper Jesus Corona or scale the fence and invade the pitch.
Television pictures showed Corona with an expression of sheer terror on his face as he walked back to the goal in front of the three-tier stand, ready for the restart.
Almost immediately the game was abandoned.
Trouble initially broke out following one of several brawls on the field.
Boca midfielder Raul Cascini appeared to head-butt Guadalajara striker Adolfo Bautista as the two challenged for the ball, Bautista fell to the ground and when he got up, he was surrounded by angry Boca players accusing him of playacting.
Boca striker Martin Palermo chased Bautista and both were sent off, although the Guadalajara player appeared to do nothing more than try to run away.

MISSILES THROWN

Palermo initially refused to leave the field and was seen to poke the referee and head-butt Bautista before being escorted away.
Meanwhile, Bautista was pelted with missiles as police led him around the touchline towards the dressing-room while objects were also thrown at the Guadalajara team bench.
As Bautista passed behind the Guadalajara goal, a fan who managed to scale the five-metre fence around the field punched him from behind.
He climbed back over the fence and into the crowd to the approval of other supporters and police were unable to catch him.
Almost immediately, goalkeeper Corona appeared to be struck by another missile thrown from the crowd.
The players were then taken to the centre circle as the referee and police decided what to do next.
Meanwhile, a number of fans climbed to the top of the fences around the pitch, threatening an invasion.
Eventually, the referee decided to suspend the tie and the final outcome will now be decided by the South American Football Confederation (CSF).
Boca were already smarting from their first-leg defeat even before Guadalajara's flamboyant president Jorge Vergara raised the temperature on the eve of the game by claiming that his team were going to win 2-0 and silence the Bombonera.
Boca clearly tried to intimidate the visitors from the start of the game with close marking, rough tackling, constant provocation and gamesmanship, forcing the referee to show seven yellow cards in the first half.
However, they were unable to find a way past Corona, who made several outstanding saves.
In the first half, he tipped over a Palermo header while in the second he made another outstanding double save to deny the exasperated Palermo again and also blocked a Diego Cagna shot at close range.

Around the 75th minute, Chivas' Adolfo Bautista was hauled down from behind on a counterattack. In response, Bautista then taunted his opponents with hand gestures indicating Guadalajara's 4-0 advantage. Boca's Martin Palermo was enraged at Bautista, and took a swipe at him after the play. Palermo was immediately issued a red card, and furiously argued with Uruguayan referee Martin Vazquez, before continuing to chase after Bautista, who was also ejected.
Shortly afterward, as Bautista was being escorted off the field by police in riot gear, fans started to throw objects at him, with some bouncing off the police shields.
A spectator, dressed in a bright yellow replica jersey, came onto the field and tried to throw a punch at Bautista. The surprised police then turned their attention to the fan, who dashed to the sideline and tried to climb over the barrier back into the stands. Two other fans, perched atop the barrier that surrounds the outer rim of the field, helped pull the man back over.
Both teams and the referees retreated to midfield as some of the rowdy fans in the cramped stadium nicknamed Bombonera -- Spanish for candy box -- began to pelt the field with debris.
After a lengthy delay, play looked like it was going to resume, as Corona put the ball down for a free kick. But instead Vazquez blew his whistle and pointed to midfield, signifying the end of the match.

Six suspects left in soccer probe - 15/06/06

Source : BBC NEWS

West Yorkshire Police have six people left to identify after a poster appeal about suspected football hooligans.

The group are believed to have been involved in clashes which followed Leeds United matches against Cardiff City and West Ham United.
Twenty-six people have already appeared in court charged with affray and public order offences.
Det Supt Phil Sedgwick, leading the inquiry, hailed the response to the appeal so far as "excellent".
The six men detectives have yet to identify are all believed to have been involved in throwing missiles at police or general disorder.
All are believed to be fans or followers of Leeds United, a West Yorkshire Police spokesman said.
"We are just asking for some extra help to identify the outstanding suspects," added Mr Sedgwick.

Boca coach resigns over spitting incident - 16/06/06

Source : REÜTERS

Boca Juniors coach Jorge Benitez resigned on Wednesday after television images showed him spitting at a Guadalajara player during the previous night's stormy Libertadores Cup tie.
The incident occurred during an on-field brawl in the second half of a tense quarter-final tie as the home side headed towards elimination from the tournament they won three times between 2000 and 2003.
With Boca trailing 4-0 from the first leg in Mexico, Tuesday's second leg remained goalless when the referee was forced to abandon the match in the 79th minute due to crowd violence sparked by the brawl.
"On the basis of the pictures which have been shown today (Wednesday) by various media organisations, the board of directors have decided to accept the resignation offered by Jorge Benitez," club president Mauricio Macri said.
"The game did not finish in the way we wanted and we apologise to Chivas (Guadalajara) because the incidents which happened during the game do not fit in with our prestigious 100-year old institution."
"We may suffer footballing defeats, and many more successes, but it should never be in doubt that we are sportsmen, gentlemen and good hosts."

FOUR FINGERS

Trouble broke out at the Bombonera stadium after Guadalajara forward Adolfo Bautista clashed with Boca's Raul Cascini.
Bautista showed four fingers to the crowd, indicating the aggregate score, and enraged his opponents, sparking a brawl in which he and Boca striker Martin Palermo were sent off.
Television pictures and media photographs showed that Benitez spat at Bautista as police led him along the touchline to the dressing room.
Bautista was also punched by a fan who scaled the five-metre high fences around the pitch and kicked by a ball boy as he was led away.
As missiles rained down on to the field, referee Martin Vazquez called the game off.
Macri said club officials involved in the trouble would be disciplined, including those who helped the fan climb over the fence and back into the crowd after attacking Bautista.
Palermo, who head-butted Bautista in the neck after being dismissed, was also repentant.
"I lost control," he told Radio Mitre. "When I saw the pictures, I realised I made a mistake."
Appointed as interim coach in November, Benitez was given the job on a long-term basis one month later after Boca won the Copa Sudamericana, the region's equivalent of the UEFA Cup.
Even before the game, Benitez had been under fire for his controversial rotation system and especially for leaving striker Guillermo Barros Schelotto, a Boca stalwart, on the bench.
Their recent domestic form has been dismal and Boca have slumped to 14th in the 20-team table.
Not even a 2-1 win over arch-rivals River Plate has been enough to save their season.
As a result, Boca have no chance of qualifying for next year's Libertadores and will have to wait until 2007 for another attempt at the competition.

Police Hunt Flare Thrower - 16/06/06

Source : SPORTINGLIFE

Police investigating an incident when a flare was thrown on to the pitch during Manchester United's match against Southampton, have released a picture of a man they want to question.
The lit flare narrowly missed Southampton goalkeeper Paul Smith after it was hurled from the stands at St Mary's Stadium.
Detectives have uncovered an image of a man standing in the crowd holding a lit flare only moments before the incident.
Officials were forced to halt the match, on March 12 this year, for two minutes while the flare burned out and was removed from the pitch.
Chief Superintendent Andy Holt of Greater Manchester Police described the action as "extremely dangerous".
He said: "Officers from Greater Manchester Police have been working closely with their counterparts in Southampton and both football clubs to trace the man who threw the flare.
"We now need the public's help to identify the man in the picture.
"This type of activity is extremely dangerous and we will not tolerate flares being taken to matches in the UK.
"You cannot underestimate how dangerous this could be. There have been incidents in Europe of flares being thrown at matches and fans and emergency services staff suffering horrific injuries.
"I would urge anyone who knows who this man is to contact the police. I would also remind people who are thinking of taking flares to matches that this is an issue which the police take very seriously. We will not tolerate individuals putting fellow football supporters at risk."

Italian football supporters stage anti-Albanian protest - 16/06/06

Source : AFP

Right-wing and skinhead football supporters converged on a small town in northern Italy to attend the funeral of a local youth who was killed in a fight with Albanian immigrants, amid extreme racial tension.
After the funeral for Claudio Meggiorin, a 23-year-old waiter who was stabbed to death on Saturday when he tried to intervene in a fight outside his cafe in Besano, the groups held a rowdy march through the town.
The groups which had names such as "blood and honour," "Viking Inter 1984" and "Ragazzi della Skinhouse," had earlier sung the Italian national anthem with raised-arm salutes after the funeral.
The mayor of the nearby town of Varese, a member of the populist Northern League party, appealed for calm.
Two young Albanians aged 17 and 21 were arrested shortly after the killing of Meggiorin.
The next day local residents of Besano were reported to have rampaged through the town looking for Albanians to attack. A policeman was slightly injured and an Albanian had to be hospitalised.
Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu intervened on Wednesday to warn the crowds that "no-one should take the law into his own hands."

Sao Paolo - River Plate - Copa Libertadores - 22/06/2005

Source:AP

Fans of Argentine club River Plate clashed with Brazilian police on Wednesday before the team's Copa Libertadores semifinal against Sao Paulo at Morumbi Stadium.
Police said no serious injuries were immediately reported.
Sao Paulo fans also threw rocks at the bus carrying River Plate players as they arrived at the stadium, breaking six windows but not injuring anybody before police intervened.
Police used riot batons to ward off River Plate fans who reportedly were upset with the police's decision to prohibit them from displaying team banners in the stadium. Globo TV showed the fans breaking their wooden seats and using them to confront the policemen.
``We were attacked and had to defend ourselves,'' police major Valter, who would give only his first name, told local Radio Jovem Pan. ``Some of our officers suffered minor injuries, but the situation was quickly under control.''
Globo said as many as 14 people, including policemen and River Plate fans, were treated at the stadium for bruises and minor cuts.

Glentoran call for inquiry - 22/06/06

Source : BBC NEWS

Glentoran officials are demanding an independent inquiry into the violence after the game with Linfield at the Oval on 23 April.

The call comes after an IFA hearing into the trouble had to adjourned.
It was cut short due to alleged discrepencies in the report on the violence presented to the clubs and the one given to the IFA hearing committee.
The Irish Premier League champions have already sought legal advice with a view to taking court action against the IFA.
"We think we have been misled," said Glentoran chief executive Tom Dick.
"The report said it would contain factual information but it is full of innuendoes, people's opinions and very little fact.
"There are too many answers and not the ones we are looking for."
Serious crowd trouble marred the crucial league clash between the Big Two rivals at the East Belfast venue.
Rival fans threw missiles at each other and fought on the pitch after Glentoran won 3-2 thanks to a late goal from former Linfield star Chris Morgan.
It was some time before riot police came on to the pitch to restore order.

Football ban will stay say judges - 17/06/2005

Source : BBC NEWS

Four men who were involved in a brawl have failed to have orders banning them from football grounds overturned.

They claimed the street fight had nothing to do with the sport.
But the prosecution alleged the Heanor four were part of a group associated with football hooligans called the "Derby Lunatic Fringe".
Mr Justice Goldring, sitting with Mr Justice Nelson in the Court of Appeal, refused to grant them permission to challenge the football banning orders.

'Now too late'

He said the Crown gave notice it would be asking for the bans, the prosecution saying it accepted the guilty pleas to affray and did not proceed against others or on violent disorder charges on that basis.
The judge said: "By now seeking leave to appeal against the orders, the applicants are attempting to go behind what had been agreed and the way the case had been put at first instance. It is now too late to do so."
Tom W*******, 20, of Broadway, Adam M*****, 19, of Wilmot S*****, James M*****, 19, of Ella Bank Road and Peter G*****, 21, of Marshall Street, all pleaded guilty to affray at Derby Crown Court.

'Pumped up'

They were each sentenced to a 200-hour community punishment order, a four-month curfew, a three-year football banning order and ordered to each pay £250 costs.
Police who attended the street fight described the four as "pumped up and aggressive".
Irshad Sheikh, for the four, told London's Criminal Appeal Court they were long-standing friends who, with partners, had visited pubs celebrating the bank holiday Monday on 12 April 2004.
He said they were not football hooligans, and the melee began after one was subjected to racial abuse and the Crown had not proved it had been football-related.

Manchester - 30/06/2005

Source : AFP + BBC

Manchester United fans clashed with police at the English Premiership side's Old Trafford ground after the sons of the club's new US owner visited the stadium for the first time since their family takeover.
Greater Manchester Police arrested a number of people during the angry protest on Wednesday evening and deployed dog units and special anti-riot officers, a spokeswoman said.
According to a report on the BBC website, the three sons of Malcolm Glazer, the 76-year-old American tycoon who completed his takeover bid earlier this week, were forced to leave Old Trafford in police vans.
Around 200 Manchester United fans staged the protest outside the ground after learning that Joel, Avi and Bryan Glazer were at Old Trafford for their first look at the stadium.
The trio are all members of the Old Trafford board, installed by their father earlier this month when he assumed control of the club and de-listed United from the Stock Exchange.
On Tuesday, Glazer passed the 98-percent mark in his buy-up of Manchester United shares, allowing him under stock market rules to compulsorily purchase the remainder and complete the takeover.
Glazer, who owns NFL franchise Tampa Bay Buccaneers, launched his formal cash takeover offer on May 13, valuing the club at 790.3 million pounds (1.16 billion euros, 1.47 billion dollars).
However, many Manchester United fans bitterly oppose the deal, worried that the massive borrowing needed to finance Glazer's bid will saddle the previously liquid club with unnecessary debts, forcing up ticket prices and reducing transfer spending.
Mark Longden of the independent Manchester United Supporters Association, which has led opposition to the takeover, said fans had wanted to "confront" the three Glazer sons.
"We are blocking all the exits in an attempt to force the Glazers to face us," he said as the protest took place.
"This is a peaceful protest but we intend to get our message heard."
Earlier Wednesday, the three sons met representatives from the Premier League and Football Association, as well as Sports Minister Richard Caborn and United chief executive David Gill.
"We have had some really positive meetings," Joel Glazer, tipped by many to become United chairman soon, said after the talks in London.
"We are delighted to have met the game's leading administrators and the sports minister so early in our time at United and we are grateful to them all for making the time to see us.
"There's been a lot in the UK press about us in the last 18 months and this has been an invaluable chance to tell the men who run the game what the truth is.
"I hope they are reassured by our experience in sport and our passion to keep Manchester United successful."
Fans' groups have threatened to boycott games and merchandise, and have even set up a rival club, FC United.
But players and staff seem unfazed by the furore.
Speaking from the team's week-long training camp in southern Portugal, assistant manager Carlos Queiroz said: "The difference between Manchester United and other clubs where I have been in my life is this: here no one enters into a panic."

*************************************************************

Joel, Avi and Bryan Glazer had to leave Old Trafford in police vans on Wednesday after fans angry at the £790m takeover protested outside the stadium.
The Glazer brothers, sons of new owner Malcolm, were making their first visit to the club since taking it over.
Echoes of "die, Glazer die" rumbled around the stadium as about 300 fans vented their frustration.
Barriers were erected around the ground as fans tried to stop the Glazers leaving and two arrests were made.
It took more than 100 Greater Manchester Police officers and a massive security operation to get the Glazers out of the ground as fans swarmed around the stadium.
Some fans pelted police vans with missiles and police in return used batons and scores of dogs to try to get the supporters under control.
Colin Hendry, from the Manchester United Independent Supporters Association, said he thought police were too heavy-handed.
"There were barricades across a road and people were standing and chatting," Hendry told BBC Radio Five Live.
"The barricade went up, the Glazers started to move and people sat down in front of the barricade.
"But police in riot gear, with batons, without warning, without instruction to disperse, just attacked those people."
However, a Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman said: "Police were called to Old Trafford following reports that a number of fans were protesting outside.
"High visibility patrols, dog handlers and officers from the tactical aid unit went to Old Trafford to ensure the protest remained peaceful."
Joel Glazer, who is expected to be confirmed as chairman of the club, is believed to have spent part of his evening recording an interview for the club's television station, MUTV.
The interview will be broadcast on Friday evening.
Shareholders United, who oppose the takeover of the Premiership club, insisted Wednesday's protests showed there was still significant ill-feeling towards the Glazer family.
"The Glazer family are the enemies of Manchester United," said Shareholders United vice-chairman Sean Bones.
"We find them disgusting and repulsive. They may have captured the club but they only have it on a temporary basis.
"It might take a long time, maybe two or three years, but we are showing Glazer that we won't give up.
I can't see Glazer or his sons actually turning up at Old Trafford for a match because the repercussions would be enormous

"In the long-term the Glazer brand will be suffocated. The previous Manchester United brand was peerless in terms of sporting brand names.
"The Glazer brand is toxic and tarnished, uncool and unstylish. Glazer will lose the war."
The Glazers were accompanied on a tour of Old Trafford by chief executive David Gill and commercial director Andy Anson, who had been ousted and then reinstated to the United board by Malcolm Glazer.
Their visit followed meetings with club sponsors and discussions with English football's governing bodies, plus Sports Minister Richard Caborn.
On Thursday the brothers are expected to return to Old Trafford to address staff before heading back to Florida.
But former Manchester United player Arthur Albiston fears the Glazer family will never be able to actually watch a match at the ground.
