| Austrian Police Satisfied with Public Order in Euro-2008 - 12/06/2008
Source : Trend News Agency
Austria, Vienna, 12 June / corr. Trend News A.Aleskerov / Gunter Platter, the Minister of Internal Affairs, is satisfied that the first 4 days of Euro 2008 were successful for the Austrian Police. “The first days of Euro 2008 were quiet for the police. Our strategy turned out to be effective during these days,” the Minister said in Vienna on 12 June, summing up the first 4 days of championship.
On 8 June, incidents happened among the fans in the centre of the Klagenfurt city and at the Fanzone in Vienna after the German-Polish match. However, the police took the situation under its control and prevented major problems through in time and adequate interference in this incident, Platter said.
On 10 June, about 10,000 - 12,000 Swedish fans marched in Salzburg. Thousands of football fans celebrated the victory of their teams practically without any police interference in Innsbruck.
A total of 250 of 500,000 fans have been arrested during the first 4 days of championship. About 300 incidents, covering pocket thefts and forgery of tickets have been fixed during these days.

| Trouble erupts after Euro 2008 clash - 12/06/2008
Source : Bedford Today
10 arrests as football fans clash
Ten men were arrested in Luton town centre on Sunday night after a fracas broke out following the Euro 2008 clash between Germany and Poland.
Police were called by staff at The White House in St George's Square after ugly scenes at the final whistle.
Germany won the match - which was played in Klagenfurt, Austria - 2-0.
Yesterday a police spokeswoman said that despite England's failure to qualify for the tournament, beat patrols have been stepped up for the duration of the tournament.
Officers descended on St George's Square at 10.40pm to tackle the disturbance, and anyone who saw the drama unfold has been urged to get in touch.
All the arrested men have been released on police bail pending further investigation.
The police spokeswoman told the Luton News: "Beds Police will proactively continue to police football events to ensure that members of the public can enjoy themselves safely.
"We will not tolerate anti-social behaviour or disorder of any nature, and anyone participating in a disturbance shall be dealt with robustly.
"We're using additional officers, but obviously we're looking at each individual match to determine where we're going to use our resources. We're keeping an eye on who's playing."

| Hooligan alert for Croatia v Germany game - 12/06/2008
Source : Footylatest
The Austrian police are gearing up for another night of violence in the small city of Klagenfurt as 43,000 fans are expected to descend on them in the next few hours.
At least 3,300 police and hooligan spotters have been drafted in to cope with the influx after there were 157 arrested at the Germany v Poland game on Sunday. Most of the arrested fans were German and at least four were known to be notorious hooligans.
Wolfgang Rauchegger, police commander for the local province said that they had been tipped off that tonights game would be a focus for the troublemakers:
"After information from colleagues abroad we are expecting that some fans classed as risk individuals will try and reach Austria. We have numbers but I don't wish to disclose them."
"We are expecting that it will be an essentially peaceful football party, but we are not naive and we have prepared for the fact that there could be incidents," said Rauchegger.
Both Croatia and Germany's borders are not so far from Klagenfurt and their are patrols organized to try and root out any known offenders before they enter the country but with such huge numbers arriving in a short space of time their are bound to have limited success, so there will be heightened tension all over the city this evening.

| Brazilian banned 12 matches after clash with police - 12/06/2008
Source : Reuters
A Brazilian player has been banned for 12 matches after he was sent off, made insulting gestures to the crowd and fought with riot police during a game 10 days ago. Botafogo defender Andre Luis was found guilty of insulting the referee, ungentlemanly conduct and "an attitude contrary to sporting discipline and morals" following the incident during Brazilian championship game against Nautico. Nautico were given a two-match home ban for their part in the scenes, in which other Botafogo players also clashed with riot police who responded by using pepper spray and truncheons, Brazilian football's disciplinary tribunal said on its Web site (http://justicadesportiva.uol.com.br). The Recife-based club were also fined 40,000 reais ($24,390) for failing to take proper security measures. The trouble began when Andre Luis was sent off in the first half for a second bookable offence. As he left the pitch, Andres Luis made insulting gestures to Nautico fans and kicked a plastic bottle into the crowd. He then argued with police and was arrested by an officer who grabbed him from behind. Although he managed to wriggle free, Andre Luis was re-captured, frog-marched away by around 10 policemen and taken to a mobile station outside the stadium. Other Botafogo players joined in the skirmish and complained that police squirted them with pepper spray and prodded them with truncheons. The trouble held up the match for 12 minutes. The police action brought a furious protest from Botafogo president Bebeto de Freitas.

| 6 German hooligans stopped at Swiss border - 13/06/2008Source : Associated Press Swiss border guards refused six German hooligans entry into the country Friday. Passport checks showed the six men, aged 23 to 33, have a history of violence at sporting events, border police said in a statement. Two knives, two mouth guards and several padded gloves were found during a search of the men's car at a border crossing near Basel. Police are on alert for foreign hooligans who might cause trouble at the European Championship, which is being hosted by Switzerland and neighbor Austria. And in Rome, authorities banned Romania fans from erecting a giant TV screen to watch the match between the two countries for fear of possible violence. There are officially 560,000 Romanians living and working in Italy, but tensions rose in Rome last year after an immigrant was arrested and accused of beating to death the wife of an Italian naval commander. "We wanted to put up a giant screen but have given up the idea," said Eugen Terteleac, chairman of the Association of Romanians in Italy. Terteleac advised supporters to stay home and watch the match. The Italian government last year gave local authorities power to expel EU citizens considered dangerous, and Italian foreign minister Franco Frattini said in May the government would seek to expel foreigners who break the law.

A Poland fan at the European Championship was given a five-month suspended sentence by a court in southern Austria on Friday for attempting to resist arrest.
Bernd Lutschounig, a spokesman for the court in Klagenfurt, said the man had been in custody since Sunday and will soon be leaving the country.
The man, who has not been identified and has been released from custody, will not have to serve his sentence unless he commits another crime in Austria soil, Lutschounig said, without providing more details.
The Austria Press Agency quoted a prosecution spokesman as saying that the man was involved in a skirmish between rival fans in Klagenfurt late Saturday, during which he lashed out at police and resisted arrest. The incident occurred after Germany defeated Poland 2-0 in the city's stadium.
The man lives in Britain, APA reported.

| Rangers - Police: we will catch Uefa Cup thugs - 13/06/2008
Source : The Herald
Police efforts to identify those involved in the violence in Manchester following Rangers' Uefa Cup final defeat will continue for 18 months, according to the head of Scotland's largest force.
Speaking publicly for the first time on the violence, Stephen House, Strathclyde Police Chief Constable, said Greater Manchester Police would be in Scotland in the coming months and further arrests were imminent.
Addressing his governing body on the role of Strathclyde Police before the final and in the aftermath, he said Manchester officers had been in contact 12 months ago to discuss scenarios if Rangers reached the final and revealed the force had sent "considerable numbers" of officers to European games at Ibrox Stadium to observe the behaviour of supporters.
His comments come as both forces revealed details of the investigation, which they claim is progressing well, including evidence-gathering, viewing CCTV, identifying suspects and preparing evidence. Police spotters from Strathclyde and representatives from Rangers are also working with Manchester police to trace those involved.
At a meeting of the Strathclyde Joint Police Board on Thursday, Mr House told councillors the CCTV images of crowds attacking officers "looked like a science fiction film", saying excessive drinking was a key factor.
He also told how a simulated exercise involving 260 Strathclyde officers dressed in riot gear was staged at Glasgow's SECC within a fortnight of the final on May 15. But he insisted it was not a "knee jerk reaction to Manchester" and had been planned for months.
More than 150,000 fans flocked to the game against Zenit St Petersburg at the City of Manchester Stadium.
But violence erupted and there were running battles with riot police. Some 43 people were arrested on the night but Mr House said he expected the numbers to rise in the coming months.
He said: "Greater Manchester Police will be coming up to Scotland to identify offenders and I'm quite sure this will take many months."
He added: "I know what I saw on TV and it looked like a science fiction film, a baying crowd running down a street chasing police officers. Being drunk or drinking is no excuse."
Detective Superintendent Geoff Wessell, the Manchester police officer leading the investigation, said: "These people sullied the reputation of Rangers FC and the tens of thousands of genuine fans who travelled to Manchester and acted impeccably."

Twenty people were arrested after a fight between French, Dutch and Swiss fans. A police officer confirmed two people were wounded in the clashes which involved at least forty people. Police also made 105 ''temporary arrests'' for ''minor offences'' after the match between the Netherlands and France, which the Dutch won 4-1.

| Hooligans sentenced for pre-match clash - 20/06/2008
Source : Chester Chronicle
A FOOTBALL hooligan has been jailed and banned from watching Chester City for six years for his part in a city centre clash.
Trouble flared before City’s first game of last season when rival Chesterfield fans clashed with home supporters in the city centre on August 11, 2007.
The violence began at about 1.30pm at Kaleyards, near the Frodsham Street car park.
On Friday, three Chester City supporters and 16 Chesterfield FC fans were sentenced for affray and using threatening or intimidating behaviour at Chester Crown Court.
CCTV footage of the brawl showed several of them throwing bottles, branches and punches in broad daylight.
Chester fans Adam Futcher, 21, of Greenfields, Upton, Brian Curtis, 40, of Browning Close, Blacon, and Dale Cooper, 21, of Olivia Street, Bootle, Liverpool were sentenced with 16 Chesterfield supporters.
Both Futcher and Cooper had been before the same judge, Nicholas Woodward, in 2005, following a clash between Chester and Wrexham fans outside Chester railway station.
Futcher, a window cleaner, was at the front of the group of Chester fans and admitted punching two people, breaching an ASBO.
Judge Woodward told him: “You can be seen beckoning the Chesterfield fans to come over. When they do you are involved in direct violence.”
Convicted of affray, he was jailed for 12 months and handed a six-year football banning order.
Curtis was convicted of the lesser public order offence.
Curtis was given a three-year football banning order and ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work and pay £250 prosecution costs.
Cooper, seen throwing a large stick which did not hit anybody, received a 12-month prison term, suspended for two years. He was also given a two-year supervision order, told to attend the substance-related offending programme, handed a six-year football banning order and must pay £250 prosecution costs.
Of the 16 Chesterfield fans arrested, 12 were convicted of affray and four of public order offences.

The melee erupted in the main fan zone on a square adjacent to City Hall. No major injuries were reported, but first-aid personnel had to treat some fans for bloody noses and other superficial injuries. | Holland - Russia - 21/06/2008Source : Reuters Basel police make 50 arrests after Dutch defeatBasel police arrested 50 fans after Netherlands' unexpected 3-1 defeat by Russia in their Euro 2008 quarter-final on Saturday but said the vast majority of supporters had been well-behaved. Police spokesman Klaus Mannhart told a news conference on Sunday most of the arrests were made following scuffles between the two sets of fans, as well as among the Dutch themselves. Fifteen of those arrested were Swiss locals. "A lot of alcohol was consumed and things got pretty hectic after the match as a combination of the result, the drinking and the warm weather," Mannhart said. "There were small fights breaking out all over the town but we had no serious injuries." Up to 180,000 supporters were estimated to have followed the match in Basel, a number roughly equal to the city's population. The city centre had been packed out several hours before the game with Netherlands' orange-clad army of boisterous fans far outnumbering the Russian visitors. "There were clearly some unpleasant incidents but when you look at the number of fans and the amount they had drunk, then I think the authorities passed what was definitely our biggest test," Basel tournament coordinator Hanspeter Weisshaupt said. Officials estimated that up to 500,000 litres of beer had been consumed, not including any which supporters had brought with them. Some 40 tonnes of rubbish had to be cleared from the city's streets. Weisshaupt said that around 100,000 people were expected for Wednesday's semi-final between Germany and Turkey. "We are of course aware of some of the tensions between Turkish and German supporters, but we are looking forward to another friendly encounter," he added. "There is a large Turkish community in Basel who are very well integrated. Together with the large number of fans travelling from neighbouring Germany, it is another dream draw for us." ************************************************************* Source : Trend News Dutch football fans clash with police in DelftDutch football fans in the city of Delft, near The Hague, clashed with police early Sunday, dpa reported. | Student killed, seven others injured before Peru football match - 26/06/2008
Source : The Canadian Press
A student was fatally shot and seven other Universitario club fans were wounded while on their way to a league football match Wednesday evening.
Police Gen. Javier Uribe told Lima's Radioprogramas that a gunman on a motorcycle opened fire on the eight fans, who were on their way to the National Stadium for a match between Universitario and Sporting Cristal.
Carlos Zamora, a doctor at the Cayetano Heredia hospital where the men were taken, said the 21-year-old student died in the operating room. Five of the seven wounded were between the ages of 14 and 17.
"Unfortunately, this happened and we regret it," Uribe said. "I'm sure that perpetrators of this will be captured quickly."
Witnesses interviewed by Radioprogramas said the gunman was a fan of Universitario's bitter rival Alianza Lima.

| Germany - Turkey - 25/06/2008Source : AFP + Netzeitung + dpa Several incidents were recorded from eastern Germany, with kebab-shops in Dresden attacked by hooligans and six policemen injured during fights in Chemnitz - the hometown of Germany captain Michael Ballack. ************************************************************* Thousands of extra police were deployed across the country from Munich to Frankfurt to ensure that the mix of rival fans, beer and summer sunshine did not become too volatile before, during and after the match. In the capital, home to 120,000 people of Turkish origin among a population of 3.4 million, authorities said 1,500 police including reinforcements from four other states would be on the streets. In Munich, 300 uniformed officers kept the revelry in check, a third of them outside the Olympic stadium where 30,000 people watched the game via satellite, while Frankfurt, Cologne, Hamburg and other cities beefed up security. Police said that between 20 and 30 vandals attacked two Turkish kebab shops after the game in the eastern city of Dresden and that a small number of people had been injured inside. In the western city of Cologne police said that 21 people had been taken into custody including seven out of a group of around 50 football hooligans known to police. In the capital police made 13 arrests, "but considering the amount of people we are very happy ... There have been a few verbal altercations but that's it," police spokeswoman Claudia Frank told AFP. | |

| Leeds United : Football thugs get three-year match ban - 27/06/2008
Source : Yorkshire Evening Post
THREE thugs have been banned from football games for three years after trouble erupted following a Leeds United-Millwall match.
The Leeds United hooligans were seen on CCTV in a baying mob causing trouble after the match on October 27.
The three – one a police equipment tester – were among up to 40 troublemakers wanted by police over the troubles which flared before, after and during the clash with Millwall.
They were brought before Leeds Magistrates Court where CCTV footage showed Andrew Horan trying to punch a TV cameraman.
Dressed in a smart suit, Horan, 45, of Doncaster, appeared before District Judge Christopher Darnton QC who told him: "I cannot understand you. You are, on the face of it, a respectable person with responsibilities, educated and here you are at a football match behaving in that way."
Curfew
Horan, who was also banned from grounds in 1991, was given a 12-week curfew (8pm to 6am), a 12-month community order and ordered to do unpaid work for 180 hours.
At the same game, police equipment tester Scott Lorimer was seen hanging around and refusing to budge as police tried to move him on. He was also seen hurling a coin into the crowd.
Lorimer, 28, of Dufton Approach, Seacroft, was ordered to do 150 hours unpaid work.
Simon Curtin, 37, of Elmwood Drive, Wakefield, was also involved in the disorder – although to a lesser extent, the court heard.
Curtin was shouting and being abusive to an officer. He was bitten by a police dog. Curtin was ordered to do 150 hours unpaid work.
All three were sentenced after admitting public order. They were all banned from matches for three years as well as being ordered to pay £50 court costs.
