Fans arrested as violence mars game
Violence erupted before and after Swindon Town's derby clash with Cheltenham forcing police officers to make more than 30 arrests.
Supporters of both clubs ended up behind bars for fighting, nuisance behaviour, and drink and drugs offences on the streets and in the pubs of Cheltenham on Saturday.
More fans were arrested after returning to Swindon.
advertisementSwindon police's football liaison officer PC James Neighbour, who was working with officers from Gloucestershire police, said: "Thirty arrests were made in Cheltenham of both home and Swindon fans.
"Two more were arrested in Swindon as some came back on the train. Some of them were drugs offences, for class As including cocaine, and public order offences.
"There was a bit of an issue with fans at the Northampton game a couple of weeks ago. Gloucester police were really proactive.
"There were quite a few staff on the operation and they weren't taking any flack. The trouble was all around the town, before, during and after the match.
"Those people arrested were not necessarily people with tickets to the actual match."
PC Neighbour said he suspected the Bank Holiday atmosphere had contributed to the trouble. "It was a warm day and I think fans had a bit to drink."
PC Neighbour said the exact breakdown of arrests would not be known until later in the week.
A spokeswoman for British Transport Police confirmed there was further trouble as fans returned home to Swindon by train.
She said: "We did have an incident at Swindon railway station. We were advised at about 9pm that there were about 25 supporters on a train being rowdy.
"One person was arrested for a public order offence."
Nigel Bennett from Swindon Town Supporters' Club said: "This kind of trouble is always a real shame. I didn't see anything because I was away pretty quickly afterwards, but this kind of behaviour can really ruin a good match.
"I didn't notice a particularly tense atmosphere during the match. It was noisy but relaxed. It surprises me to hear that there were a lot of fans arrested, and I can only hope it wasn't the Swindon Town lot at the heart of the trouble."
Swindon Town spokesman Chris Tanner thanked fans inside the ground for their good behaviour. "About 1,800 fans came to the game from Swindon and everyone I saw was very well behaved.
"I can only suggest there may have been a few isolated incidents away from the game. From the club point of view I want to thank the 1,800 fans who came to support us."

English FA to investigate after fans target Mido
The English FA said on Tuesday it will investigate allegations that Middlesbrough's Egyptian striker Mido was abused by Newcastle United fans during Sunday's Premier League game. Mido, who joined Middlesbrough from Tottenham Hotspur for 6.0 million pounds ($12.07 million) earlier this month, scored his second goal in two matches for his new club, who drew 2-2 with their northeast rivals. He also scored on his debut for Middlesbrough against Fulham on Aug. 18. An FA spokesman said: "We will certainly be looking into it," adding that both clubs will be asked for their views on the matter. "We will also look at the quotes from the player and take it from there," the spokesman added. Mido said after the game: "Maybe some of them were drunk or something. I heard it, it was very clear and I understood what they were saying. The chants made me want to score more goals. I was delighted to score and I wanted another." Mido was booked by referee Mike Dean for celebrating his goal in front of the Newcastle fans. Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate said: "I find it strange that 3,000 people can insult someone and nothing is done. On the other hand, when the boot is on the other foot, it gets him into trouble. In terms of civil liberties I find that strange."

| Time for football clubs to shoulder the blame - 29/08/2007
Source : Cyprus Mail
THE CYPRUS football season kicks off at the weekend, but if last Thursday’s crowd trouble during a ‘friendly’ in Limassol was a sign of things to come only the hooligans would be looking forward to the new championship. If a friendly between two sides whose fans had no old scores to settle could turn into an orgy of fanaticism and violence, what would happen when the clubs are playing for league points?
Events prompted the Limassol police chief to wonder whether there would soon be a need to police the clubs’ training sessions as well, such is the scale of the problem.
Last Thursday’s friendly between Apollonas and Omonia was meant to be a low key affair, the clubs agreeing that it required a minimal police presence. This made it possible for Omonia fans to take beer bottles on to the terraces, which they subsequently hurled on the pitch together with other objects. Apollonas fans then tried to get in the Omonia terrace, but failing to do so hurled objects at the visiting supporters; there was also chanting of political slogans. There was more fighting outside the ground, with damage caused to cars and shop-fronts, but, thankfully, nobody was injured, even though police patrols continued all night.
The following day we had the obligatory ‘broad’ meeting at police HQ, attended by the Chief of Police and representatives of Football Federation KOP and Cyprus Sports organisation. The meeting produced the familiar platitudes and customary pledge to root out the hooligans. For this purpose, CCTV would be installed at stadiums, even though the experiment at the Tsirion last Thursday – it was the first time there was CCTV – proved a flop, the police unable to identify the troublemakers from the film footage even though some people were called in for questioning.
We should not be too harsh on the police force because it has been trying to tackle football violence on its own, without any help from the clubs or the spineless KOP. If anything, the clubs constantly undermine the police’s effort by encouraging fanaticism and the abrogating all responsibility when this fanaticism leads to violence. KOP, meanwhile, is a monumentally ineffective ruling body, the top officials of which are more concerned with keeping the clubs that elect them happy than taking unpopular measures against them for tacitly encouraging hooliganism and constantly bringing the game into disrepute.
It is high time the clubs were made to take responsibility for the state of the game instead of always passing the buck. Why were fans allowed to take bottles on the stands, last Thursday? Where were the stadium stewards to stop them from doing so? Why did the clubs not issue a statement condemning the behaviour of the fans and clearly condemning the use of political slogans which foster fanatical behaviour? The problem is that the clubs are responsible for politicising football. And it is often the club officials who keep fanaticism alive with their incendiary public statements – the public exchanges over the elections held for the KOP executive committee a few weeks ago would have psyched up most supporters.
If the clubs sincerely want to make football grounds safe (we doubt they are prepared to take the necessary measures) again they should start taking responsibility for the behaviour of their fans, instead of expecting the police to always carry the can. It is the irresponsible clubs and the pitiful KOP that have the power to change things for the better and not the police.

On the other side, local ultras and lads (to confirm) tried to enter the pitch. The game was stopped for a few minutes. ********************************************************************************************* Fans clash during Fenerbahce win at AnderlechtTurkey's Fenerbahce secured a spot in the group stages of the Champions League after a 2-0 win at Anderlecht on Wednesday in a game marred by crowd violence. After a 1-0 win at home two weeks ago, the Turkish first division side won the tie 3-0 on agregate. Belgian police had to intervene after fans from both clubs clashed in the 80th minute and the game was stopped for several minutes after Anderlecht fans attempted to jump over fencing dividing them and visiting fans. A number of racist chants were also heard from both sets of supporters and Anderlecht players were forced to intervene to calm the situation. "At the moment there is a lot of activity on the streets, but we will have to wait and see if there are any arrests," a Brussels police spokesman said. The visitors took the lead after three minutes when Mateja Kezman tapped the ball home easily after Anderlecht had failed to clear a corner. The goal stung the Belgian champions into action but, despite throwing everything at their opponents, they conceded a second goal on the counter-attack when Brazilian Alex pounced to put the tie beyond doubt. Fernabahce enter Thursday's Champions league group stage draw, while Anderlecht will be among the teams in Friday's UEFA Cup draw. ******************************* Source : RSCA online Riots during the game against FenerbahçeUntil the last minute, most of the fans kept cheering for their club. But a small group of fans started a riot. A fine will certainly follow, and Anderlecht's reputation in Europe has been damaged. During the second half, Anderlecht fans in block L3 started a riot with Turkish fans in block P. The police and stewards were able to get the situation under control by arresting a few hooligans. Though the situation almost got out of control a little bit later, when fans in block D3 tried to open a gate leading to the field. The game was interrupted by the referee. Lucas Biglia and several stewards managed to calm down the fans. A few windows were smashed, and one steward got injured. The match resumed after 5 minutes. *********************************** REPORT SOON

They were all assaulting the Turkish fans and the police. One fan of Fenerbahçe had bullets for a 9mm gun with him. The police will look at security tapes and try to identify several hooligans. | Five Arrested As River Plate Barra Bravas Clash - 31/08/2007
Source : Goal.com The Argentine Federal Police arrested five River Plate supporters after clashes between the club’s barra bravas outside the Monumental stadium in Nunez, Buenos Aires.
Police arrested five fans, who tried to escape after clashes began with other supporters from the prestigious Argentine club.
Everything started in a Buenos Aires province, outside of a supermarket, when between 20-25 violent fans began to tussle with each other for reasons that have yet to be announced.
Worried neighbours called authorities, and within minutes police arrived at the location to put an end to the clashes, which first started back in February, and have continued right throughout the year.
River Plate is suffering an internal crisis, where violent fans of the club’s barra bravas are fighting to claim a proportion of the proceeds from the sales of some of the club’s top players.
Earlier in the month Gonzalo Acro, a former member of “Los Borrachos del Tablon” was gunned down, days after Juan Pablo Carrizo was expected to be sold to Italian club Lazio.
The local authorities are investigating the clashes, but if the violence persists the Argentine football competition, which is in its fourth round, is likely to be temporarily suspended.

| Cyprus: Violence looms with ahead of football season kick-off - 31/08/2007
Source : Cyprus Mail
WITH THE new football season expected to start this weekend, it is once again looking painfully apparent that hooliganism and sports violence is not a thing of the past.
And while the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) is staging last minute rallies to overcome the problem, the telltale signs are already in place for what will look like yet another bitter and bloody year for football.
As part of a measure to stamp out the problem – one that has plagued the beautiful game since football came to the island – the CFA have now decided to ban banners of any kind at football matches.
During last season’s cup final, a supporter of Omonia unveiled a flag of “north Cyprus” prompting an angry response not just from football supporters of Anorthosis Famagusta but also from the media.
Although the new football season has yet to officially kick off, there is little to make anyone thing that the bad days are a thing of the past.
Another banner – that was shown by fans of Apollon Limassol during a friendly with Omonia two weeks ago – sparked off violent clashes at the Tsirion Athletic Stadium. The game was stopped with five minutes left to play and the violence continued outside the stadium with fans clashing and cars and coaches targeted with stones.
A moped was also torched.
A recent announcement by the CFA stated that “as a first measure” all banners, with the exception of CFA-sanctioned banners, would not be allowed in football grounds.
“This measure,” continued the announcement “is part of an effort from the CFA to tackle the problem of sports-related violence. Unfortunately, many times offensive banners were the reasons for violent scenes between opposing supporters.”
CFA officials have recently been meeting with youth organisations as part of their efforts.
The CFA will be holding a second meeting on September to discuss the issue of some games being played behind closed doors while CFA Chairman Costakis Koutsokoumnis yesterday held a meeting with representatives of the supporters clubs to inform them about the new measures. A few days ago, Koutsokoumnis also met with United Democratic Youth Organisation (EDON). But those efforts are already looking a lost cause.
Even the match between current champions APOEL and Anorthosis in the CFA Super Cup showed no signs of better relations between supporters or even players.
During the fiery match in Nicosia, six players were yellow-carded and two players were sent off.
Anorthosis’ William Boaventura was booked for inciting crowd trouble when he gestured to opposing APOEL fans after scoring while APOEL’s new signing Nuno Morais was sent off for stamping on an Anorthosis player.
The referee couldn’t even be blamed for bias because he was brought in from Greece to oversee the match.
The problem of where all the violence comes from depends on who is asked.
Some people blame political groups backing the football clubs while others, like club chairmen, blame the police for taking inappropriate measures.
Others blame the CFA for not caring or not being knowledgeable enough to deal with the problem.
Last season, a policeman died of a heart-attack after fans of APOEL and AEL clashed outside the stadium while hundreds of people were also arrested for hooliganism.
Hundreds of thousands of pounds in cost damages were also made both inside and outside stadiums with hooligans even targeting cars and house windows.

| UEFA promises better protection for United fans - 31/08/2007Source : ESPN UEFA have promised that special measures will be taken to protect Manchester United fans in Rome in the Champions League this season. Eleven supporters were hospitalised after the quarter-final against Roma in the Stadio Olimpico last season, many after a baton charge by riot police inside the ground. United will seek assurances about their fans' safety and UEFA say there will be changes to the arrangements after the two clubs were drawn in the same group of the Champions League. William Gaillard, UEFA communications director and special advisor to president Michel Platini, said: 'We will take special care of Manchester United fans because we know they had trouble. 'We will tighten up security to make sure they don't get a repeat of the incident. 'The Italian FA have a new training programme for stewards. It is something that is being applied in the Italian League - we hope that will make a difference. It means we will have well trained stewards instead of riot police.' United chief executive David Gill said: 'There were unacceptable scenes last time we were in Rome and looking at it from our perspective, our fans were blameless. 'We will work with the authorities, with Roma and UEFA to make sure there is no repeat of what happened because we want it to be remembered as a great game on the pitch.' | |
