| Wolves: judgment - 13/08/2007
Source: locals press
A Wolves hooligan who wrestled with a police officer during one of the worst football riots in the city for years walked free from court today with a three-year match ban. ********** had pleaded guilty to affray.
The 21-year-old was pictured grappling with a riot officer as hundreds of rival thugs battled in the city centre after Wolves’ 3-0 FA Cup defeat to Albion on January 28.
The ugly scenes erupted in front of horrified shoppers when up to 500 Wolves fans turned on police in anger at being kept back from Baggies supporters.
***************, Wednesfield, appeared before Wolverhampton Crown Court this afternoon where a video of his attack outside The Moon Under Water pub on Lichfield Street was shown.
The four-minute clip showed *****, along with a gang of around eight men, ambush the police officer as he tried to arrest another yob.
Mr Sunit Sandhu, prosecuting, said the day’s violence had included police officers being kicked and punched, missiles thrown and vehicles damaged.
“The atmosphere was hostile and ***** made no effort to get away from the disturbance,” he said.
As well as the banning order, Judge Sybil Thomas handed ***** a four-month prison sentence, suspended for a year, and ordered him to pay £250 court costs.
He must also complete an anger management programme and be supervised by the Probation Service for a year. The judge said: “This attack took place in a public place where ordinary members of the public going about their day-to-day business would have been put in fear. You were seen at the front of the group and made no effort to get away.”
Miss Samantha Powis, defending, said he “vehemently denied” being a part of hooligan organisation Wolves Hardcore and also denied punching and kicking the officer.
During January’s riot 11 officers were injured.

| AC Milan fans blocked from season opener in Genoa for fears of violent vendetta - 22/08/2007Source : The Associated Press AC Milan fans will not be allowed into the stadium to watch the club's season opener against Genoa on Sunday because of fears of a violent vendetta. Genoa fan Vincenzo Spagnolo was stabbed to death during a brawl with Milan supporters outside Luigi Ferraris stadium in 1995. The clubs have not met since. "Having to make certain decisions after 12 years is a defeat," Genoa prefect Giuseppe Romano said in announcing the decision Wednesday. "Unfortunately there have been worrisome signals," he said without elaborating. Graffiti has appeared near Genoa's stadium recently containing threats to revenge Spagnolo's death. "If some stray Milan fans still come to Genoa we will see to it that they don't enter into contact with Genoa supporters," Romano added. Milan fans were supposed to be allotted 2,080 tickets for the game, which marks Genoa's return to the top division after a 12-season absence. GENOA - MILAN - 1995 | |

| Police target mini-hooligans in crackdown - 22/08/2007
Source : South Wales Echo POLICE have launched a new campaign to stop teen yobs who are causing trouble at Cardiff City football matches.
For the first time, officers targeting unruly Cardiff City supporters plan to crack down on abusive, threatening youths as well as the serious hooligans who organise football violence.
CCTV pictures have been released showing eight young fans who are suspected of causing trouble after City’s first home game against Stoke on Saturday, August 11.
A large group of around 100 fans – many of them 15 and 16-year-olds – gathered outside Ninian Park where away fans were expected to leave. When they refused to move back, yellow-jacketed police officers formed a line to move them away so Stoke fans could move freely out of the ground.
A hard core started throwing bottles, stones and anything else they could lay their hands on. Several were also seen on a video initially posted on the YouTube website rushing forward goading the police.
Detective Constable Simon Chivers, of the football intelligence unit, said this behaviour would result in banning orders.
He said: "We want to issue a statement of intent. These people are not football hooligans, who set out to organise violence. They are more akin to kids with Asbos.
"Many of them are 15 or 16 year olds who are hanging around causing bother.
"That behaviour to a certain extent has been tolerated. From this season it will not be tolerated."
Three men aged between 27 and 23 have already received football banning orders for their part in the trouble outside Ninian Park on August 11.
Mark Lewis, 27, of Church Terrace, New Tredegar, Michael Gore, 23, of Glamorgan Street, Mountain Ash, and Lee Paul Thomas, 24, of Twyn Gardens, Cefn Forrest, Blackwood, all pleaded guilty to public order offences at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court. Lewis was fined £100 and banned from football for a year. Gore and Thomas were both fined £200 and banned for three years. A further nine suspects have been identified and police hope to make arrests soon.

| Argentina in fear of the Drunks in the Stands - 22/08/2007
Source : Guardian Unlimited
This was meant to be the year Argentinian football cleaned up its act - but gangs of murderous hooligans are ensuring it isn't happening yet.
This season was to be the one in which Argentina tackled football-related violence head on. Increased television revenue would give clubs added income necessary to help them combat the endemic hooligan problem, while 50% reductions in tickets available to away fans were imposed by the football association. Yet just three weeks into the apertura season, the outlook is bleak. Reports last weekend that San Martin fans were sold tickets to the home area at Boca Juniors' Bombonera hardly speak of clubs tightening control over ticket sales. Meanwhile, the full-scale war that is raging among one of the most feared hooligan groups - River Plate's Los Borrachos del Tablón (The Drunks in the Stands) - shows no signs of abating.
Two Tuesdays ago, just before midnight, Gonzalo Acro left his gym after a kick-boxing class in Buenos Aires. He had been receiving threatening text messages all day, but as a notorious member of Los Borrachos, he was no stranger to intimidation. Barely reaching the corner of the block, a group of four gunmen shot him first in the leg, then, as he lay on the ground, twice in the head. Acro died in hospital two days later.
River's first home game of the season, against Newell's Old Boys, was suspended as it came just days after the shooting. "Given the lack of security, we had to act," said home secretary Aníbal Fernández, justifying government intervention. In fact, River played their first match of the season just last weekend: their opener against Gimnasia was postponed as the team were still on tour in east Asia. The move to reschedule the Newell's game came as no surprise, but postponing fixtures is far from the solution to the problem. In the case of River Plate, the feared barra brava is at war: Los Borrachos have split into two factions, one led by Adrian Rousseau, the other by Alan Schlenker.
"Alan organised it," Rousseau told the magazine Veintitrés in reference to the murder of Acro, his right-hand man. "He may have an alibi but he arranged it all ten days ago." He later added, rather ominously: "I want divine justice." Schlenker was quick to respond. "I was skiing ten days ago," he told listeners in a radio interview. "I am very sad about what happened. I was good friends with Gonzalo, we used to go out together, go running together, we never had a problem."
Schlenker had been content to share the leadership of Los Borrachos with Rousseau since the imprisonment of previous 'capo' Luis Pereyra, who is serving a jail sentence for murder. Yet a rift developed over status within the group and, crucially, control of finances. Los Borrachos earn approximately 300,000 pesos (around £50,000) a month touting tickets, controlling parking areas around River's stadium El Monumental and organising away trips for fans. The reported cut of multi-million pound transfer fees received by River Plate regularly bumps up their income.
Institutional support of the barras in Argentina is no secret. River president José María Aguilar once admitted his admiration of previous leaders of Los Borrachos live on television. Aguilar was quick to distance the shooting of Acro from the club - "This has nothing to do with River Plate," he protested - but official backing of Los Borrachos is a poorly-kept secret. Acro, for example, enjoyed a monthly income of 5,700 pesos (£900) for working at a swimming pool in River Plate's sports complex. He only lost his job when a paid position at the club was no longer tenable - the dispute over leadership of Los Borrachos spiralled out of control in February and Acro was directly involved.
On the opening day of the clausura season last February, River faced Lanús at home. Fighting broke out between Schlenker and Rousseau supporters, and the scenes were later to be dubbed "The Battle of the Quinchos" (in reference to the area where the fighting broke out close to the stadium). As a result of the shootings and stabbings, El Monumental was closed by the Argentine Football Association for five matches, later reduced to three. A few months later, the "Battle of the Playón" saw yet more confrontations between the two groups after the match against Independiente.
The murder of Acro is the third chapter in this series of events, and violence is expected to intensify. Board members from River Plate are keen to brush the issue aside. "This will all be sorted out by a couple of results," they repeat in the local press. Yet even the most optimistic fans know that a string of good results is, in itself, a big ask. River are in crisis, not just in the stands but also on the pitch. The team have failed to win a domestic trophy since 2004, the longest drought since the current league format began in 1991. Confidence in coach Daniel Passarella is low, and the main hope of a successful season rests on the shoulders of recovering alcoholic Ariel Ortega.
River are by no means the only club in Argentina with violent fans. Last season was characterised by matches played at neutral venues, suspended games, pitch invasions and bans on visiting supporters. The leader of Boca Juniors' barra brava, "Il Doce" (the 12th man), is currently serving a four-year jail sentence for assaulting Chacarita fans. Second Division side Nuevo Chicago, meanwhile, had their ground closed for 20 matches and were docked 20 points in July after a fan died in the clashes during their promotion playoff with Tigre.
"For one match at least, calm has been restored," wrote La Nacion after River's first game of the season against San Lorenzo passed by without incident. Thirty-eight 'barras' were denied entry, even if one well-known hooligan was arrested inside the stadium. On Thursday, River face Gimnasia to play the postponed league fixture. With Gimnasia also experiencing crowd trouble last weekend, only the brave, or foolish, will be there to see the game.

| UEFA increases Serbia's fine for racism in under-21 match against England - 23/08/2007
Source : The Associated Press
The Serbian soccer federation had its fine for racism during an under-21 match against England increased to €61,000 (US$42,000) from €24,000 (US$32,600).
UEFA said Thursday that half of the amount would be deferred for two years, to be paid only if Serbia commits a similar offense during that time.
The decision was taken by a UEFA disciplinary panel after European soccer's governing body appealed what it considered a lenient sentence. According to its statutes, UEFA can appeal decisions by the independent panel.
Serbian players and fans had used racist language after England scored the second goal in its 2-0 win during a match on June 17.
The English FA was also fined US$4,100 (€3,000) for the improper conduct of its players after the match.

| UEFA upholds Legia's Intertoto Cup exclusion, suspends team's ban from European play - 23/08/2007
Source : AP
UEFA upheld its decision to disqualify Legia Warsaw from this season's Intertoto Cup after an appeal by the Polish club. However, European soccer's governing body suspended its one-season ban for a probational period of five years. Last month, UEFA expelled Legia from the Intertoto Cup and banned the team from one European club competition within the next five years after fans clashed with riot police during a match last week. UEFA said its reasons for the decision would likely be available next week. The sanction came after hundreds of Legia fans stormed the field at halftime of last Sunday's match with their team trailing Lithuanian club Vetra FC 2-0. The fans then attempted to tear down the goal posts and vandalize billboards.
Riot police arrested dozens of Legia supporters. Seven were later given short jail sentences and nine others were fined for the violence. UEFA awarded Vetra a 3-0 win, and ordered Legia to cover the cost of damages to Vetra's stadium.

| MAJOR SECURITY ALERT FOR RED STAR V RANGERS - 22/08/2007
Source : Glasgow Daily Record
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE LATEST Serbs under miscroscope for Gers visit
RED STAR BELGRADE and local authorities last night placed a major security alert on the Champions League return leg against Rangers.
The SPL leaders are preparing for a powderkeg occasion on Tuesday when they travel to Serbia for the second leg of their explosive final-qualifying round clash.
Tensions have been fuelled ahead of the clash after Red Star's Ognjen Koroman claimed Rangers defender Alan Hutton will get the "beating of his life" in Belgrade.
Koroman is on the warpath as he believes his side were the victims of rough treatment in the first leg in Glasgow.
Serbian authorities, however, were already planning for severe disciplinary measures and the game will be one of their highest-ever security missions within the 55,000- capacity Marakana stadium.
UEFA are focusing on the country after a series of incidents and local officials are desperate to ensure there are no further problems.
Red Star remain on probation with Europe's footballing chiefs after fans bombarded the coaching staff of Croatian side Inter Zapresic with lighters, coins and a mobile phone in a UEFA Cup tie 23 months ago.
The Serbs were forced to play one game behind closed doors and Tuesday's match is their last before the two-year study period ends.
The Serbian FA already fear being kicked out of Euro 2008 as the team prepare to play Belgium in a Group A clash tonight in Brussels. UEFA officials have warned that any incident triggered by Serbian supporters will lead to a ban.
As a result Serbian chiefs refused to organise travel for fans but thousands - most of whom live in EU states - are expected to attend.
Last month, UEFA fined Serbia £16,000 for racist language their players and fans aimed at England stars in an Under-21 European Championship match in June.
They have also investigated claims of racist abuse against Rangers' DaMarcus Beasley by pro-Serbian supporters in Montenegro during the Scottish side's 1-0 victory over FK Zeta two weeks ago and UEFA fear nationalist Red Star supporters may do the same next week.
To make matters worse, UEFA recently expelled Partizan Belgrade from the UEFA Cup after their fans fought with FC Zrinjski's Bosnian-Croat rivals during a qualifying match in Mostar.
Red Star know that any misdemeanour next week in Belgrade will see UEFA throw the book at them.
But well aware they are so close to successfully ending their probation period, the club are desperate to ensure Rangers' visit passes off trouble free and strict guidelines have been put in place.
Rangers have taken 1000 tickets for the game and fans are expected to start arriving in Belgrade on Sunday.
Extra police and security will be drafted in to ensure there are no problems for the visitors inside or outside the Marakana.
Meanwhile, Koroman has escaped UEFA punishment for his comments ahead of the game.
Europe's governing body had been made aware of the Red Star player's outburst but have decided not to take the matter further.

| Apollon Limassol - Omonia Nicosia - 23/08/2007 Source : Cyprus Mail Police concern as ‘friendly’ spirals into violencePOLICE were yesterday examining CCTV footage after a pre-season football friendly degenerated into violence on Thursday night. New CCTV cameras were being put through a pre-season dress rehearsal at Limassol’s Tsirio stadium on Thursday night. They were put to the test almost from the moment they were switched on, as the ‘friendly’ between Apollon Limassol and Omonia Nicosia spiralled into mayhem inside and outside the ground. Police and football officials yesterday expressed their deep concern over the outcome of what was meant to be “a friendly match between two friendly teams”, while Police Chief Iacovos Papacostas called for an urgent meeting to discuss how to act further. The game was stopped five minutes before the final whistle. The incidents began with objects hurled onto the pitch by supporters of both teams and continued outside the stadium. Damage was caused to parked cars and motorbikes, and within the stadium. The Omonia bus was also vandalised. The entire Limassol police force, along with men from the Rapid Reaction Unit (MMAD), was summoned for help and eventually brought the situation under control without anyone being hurt. But the violence has got police worried about the impending friendlies this weekend between Apollon and AEP Paphos and Ares Limassol-AEL Limassol, let alone the start of the season on September 1. Incidents began at the 55th minute of the game, when fans started throwing bottles and other objects onto the pitch. The violence carried on outside the stadium, where fans threw stones at each other. Police only had a small force on site, as the game was meant to be a friendly and violence was not anticipated. Fans of Apollon are saying the violence was provoked by a banner held up by Omonia fans, which showed Cyprus split in two with the message: “Look what you’ve done.” Omonia fans said the other team’s supporters continuously provoked them with chants referring to EOKA. Some were also displeased with the referee’s decisions during the game. Limassol police chief Tassos Economides yesterday expressed his grave concern and stressed the incidents had not been expected as it was a friendly game between two teams that generally maintained a friendly relationship. “Apollon football team requested a small police presence, taking into consideration that they would welcome to Limassol a friendly football club,” he told CyBC. “A football club with which they have not had problems in the recent past, so we covered the match with restricted forces.” He added: “Unfortunately, before the match began, certain Omonia supporters did not want to comply, they broke the control line, invaded the pitch, they threw bottles and they held up a banner with a scathing political message. “This is an unacceptable situation, which has nothing to do with sport.” But this time the hooligans may be brought to book. Tsirio’s head technician, Costas Tsigaris, said the stadium’s CCTV system had operated for the first time on Thursday on a trial basis, in front of officials from the Cyprus Sports Association (KOA) and the police. “It was the first day that the company had to present the system, in the presence of the police and members of KOA,” he explained, adding that all the incidents had been recorded. “The police are still examining them; they seized the tape last night.” CCTV will continue to operate within the stadium. Following a meeting at police headquarters, Police Chief Iacovos Papacostas said police were determined to take all necessary measures in order to restore safety in football grounds. “As police, we will be very strict in our investigations; very strict in our decisions on whether a match should be stopped because a banner has been raised with insulting or other political messages or a fire was set or objects were thrown on the pitch,” he stressed. “We will also provide the best possible security and greatest possible police powers to avert every form of violence in the pitch.” | |
