| Football fans arrested - 16/05/2007
Source : ic Huddersfield THIRTEEN people have been arrested on suspicion of football related disorder following early morning raids in Huddersfield.
The arrests on Monday followed an incident in Wakefield city centre on Saturday, March 24.
The incident happened just after 3pm when a fight broke out on Smythe Street between a number of people from Huddersfield and several people from Sheffield.
A 19-year-old man from Sheffield suffered serious injuries.
An investigation was launched and police used CCTV footage to help identify people they believed to have been involved. Yesterday officers from the Wakefield Division visited 13 addresses across the Huddersfield area and arrested 13 young men aged between 16 and 20.
Insp David Peach from the Volume Crime Management Team at Wakefield who led the investigation said: "The incident caused disruption and fear in the city centre to people going about their everyday business."
The 13 who were arrested were still being questioned by police.

| Dinamo Zagreb - Hajduk Split - 19/05/2007Source : Javno Celebrations On Zagreb’s Streets With cheering and singing, the celebrations on Zagreb’s streets lasted well into the night. It all ended just as it started. Nothing could ruin the long announced victory celebrations for all of those that love the blur jersey. The rhapsody on the grass battlefield, “salted” with a hat trick by the record breaking Da Silva, was the best possible way to end the great season well, and apart from that, another even larger celebration has been announced. The celebrations, singing and general happiness rung through Zagreb’s streets until late at night. Thousands of loyal fans to the masters from Maksimir stadium gathered after the fireworks on the grandstands, in a long row of fans led by and English double decker bus with Dinamo’s players inside, headed towards the main square in Zagreb. The main square – the epicentre of the hot atmosphere The Ban Josip Jelacic Square was the epicentre of the hot atmosphere, which was additionally heated by various pyrotechnic devices as well as a huge euphoria for the fans. The eruption of celebrations happened after the players arrived, who showed great talent in cheering songs, whilst speeches were left out this time. However, they were not needed, because the boys have already said what they needed to. The excellent music-scene event was taken care of by the tried and tested MC Davorin Bogovic, along with the band Psihomodo Pop, as well as numerous other bands. Even though before the match itself 25 fans were arrested, there were only a small number of small incidents at the main celebrations, but larger problems were not encountered. The famous Count Jelecic, was not only a witness to the dedication of Zagreb’s citizens to their favourite club, but also to the totally visually changed old timer tram, which will probably stay covered in graffiti with Dinamo’s symbols until the end of its lifetime. | |

| New weapons for police - 21/05/2007
Source : Reuters
Greek police on Monday said they would fire paintball pellets containing different colours to identify any rioting fans during Wednesday's Champions League final between Liverpool and AC Milan. Authorities have drawn up extensive security plans for the biggest soccer match of the season to avoid any clashes between English and Italian fans.
"The paintball guns will be one of the weapons the riot police will use in case of fan clashes," police spokesman Panagiotis Stathis told Reuters. "The have the double aim of stopping trouble because they are quite painful as well as marking violent fans," he said.
Any fan covered with paint from a police gun, and not arrested immediatly, could then be easily identified and detained by police later. Stathis said the pellets would not be used in the case of crowd trouble inside the Olympic stadium and could only be used in large open spaces such as squares and major roads.
Greece expects about 50,000 Italian and English fans, many of them without tickets, for the final in Athens.
This will be the first time such weapons will be used by Greek security forces.

| Antisemitic chants for Lineker - 17/05/2007
CHELSEA fans hurled anti-semitic abuse at Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker at their glittering £135-a-head Player of the Year dinner.
As the former England striker walked on to the stage to present an award he was greeted with sick chants of "yiddo, yiddo".
They were referring to Lineker's time playing for Spurs, who have a large Jewish following.
One fan said: "It was appalling. And it wasn't a couple of people. I'd say at least 100 people joined in. It was embarrassing."
Lord Attenborough and ex-England rugby captain Lawrence Dallaglio were among stars who had to listen to the chants on Tuesday night.
Lineker tried to make light of the abuse. He said: "You wouldn't expect anything else."
Earlier this season Chelsea asked fans not to use terms such as "yids" or make noises mimicking the Nazi gas chambers

Eight people were arrested after violence erupted which was linked to Bristol Rovers' home game with Lincoln City at the weekend.
Two have been charged with threatening behaviour and one with violent disorder. Five others have been bailed.
Before the game three people were arrested at the Victoria pub where glasses and building materials were being thrown.
Afterwards a group of around 100 people threw bottles and glasses at police.

| SAFC hooligan 'fans' ignore banning orders - 08/05/2007
Source : sunderlandtoday
HOOLIGANS blacklisted from Sunderland matches have breached their football banning orders on 50 different occasions. The alarming figures come as police gear up for a new season featuring Tyne-and-Wear derby matches. There have been 40 orders obtained against so-called Sunderland AFC fans during the past three years. Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that, last year, repeated breaches were carried out so that thugs could get to see World Cup matches. Now police are warning that anyone flouting their bans, introduced to deal with hardcore football thugs, in the coming season will be severely dealt with. Sergeant Darren Sweeney, of the Football Intelligence Unit, said: "We have already got the experience in dealing with derby matches and full preparations will be made to make sure they are trouble-free events." Most breaches were during last year's World Cup. During the Germany tournament, those with orders against their name needed to hand their passports in to police stations before kick-off of all England games. Some banned fans chose to ignore the condition and faced getting a knock on their door from police. So far this year, there have been six breaches of orders, which police say demonstrates the effectiveness of the bans. Sgt Sweeney said: "They play a vital role in helping to reduce the number of football-related incidents. "Now that Sunderland are back in the Premiership we will be taking into account all the past intelligence we have used when policing derby games. "We will continue to target people who cause disorder at these football matches." Clubs like Sunderland AFC and Newcastle United have managed to stamp out hooligans in their stadiums during recent years, which means trouble is now caused elsewhere – usually in the city centre, at pubs and railway stations. Police from Sunderland Area Command arrested 95 boozed-up troublemakers during the first seven days of last year's World Cup after adopting a zero-tolerance approach.
Living with a football ban
YOBS slapped with a football banning order on conviction of a crime face living with the following restrictions: Not to go within a designated area on a Sunderland home match day at the Stadium of Light. This includes the four hours before and after kick off. Not to go within a five-mile radius of any football stadium in England and Wales where a football match involving Sunderland AFC or the England national team is being played. This includes 24 hours before and 12 hours after the advertised kick-off time. Police must be notified of any change address.

| Busy week for English airports - 20/05/2007
Source : forum
Airports in the north west of England are gearing up for a busy week as the mass exodus of Liverpool fans to the Champions League final begins.
An additional 57 charter flights have been laid on at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, where more than 13,500 fans will depart for Athens.
More supporters are expected to leave from Manchester Airport, where police say they will target known hooligans.
Liverpool take on AC Milan in the final of the competition on Wednesday night.
Airport bosses in Liverpool have been planning their operation since the semi-finals of the Champions League.
A total of 17,000 tickets have been allocated to Liverpool fans and police are urging people who do not have a ticket not to travel.
Ch Insp Chris Ullah, of Manchester Airport Police, said: "As with all operations like this, we are sending out a clear message to people intending to travel to commit violence to think again.
"In past operations, the vast majority of people approached by officers were genuine supporters who were co-operative and understanding, but we have been successful in stopping a number of known hooligans travelling. "
Mr Ullah said the operation would prevent troublemakers "ruining the reputation" of genuine football fans.

River Plate fans furious after home defeat
River Plate fans vented their fury at coach Daniel Passarella and his players and fought with each other after watching their team lose 1-0 at home to Estudiantes on Sunday.
During the match, River fans fought with each other in a section of the stadium occupied by the hardcore supporters.
Passarella, captain of Argentina's 1978 World Cup winning team, made a brief appearance before reporters but refused to answer questions.
"They tell me there are problems outside and it's not a good moment to talk," he said.
On Friday, Argentina's Interior Ministry slapped a two-match home ban on River for incidents following their 1-1 draw at home to Independiente.
River have already served a previous three-match home ban this year because of fighting among their notorious supporters.

| Greek police begin security operation for final - 21/05/2007
Source : Reuters
More than 7,500 police officers and thousands more security personnel on Monday started taking positions in and around the capital ahead of Wednesday's Champions League final between AC Milan and Liverpool. With about 50,000 English and Italian fans expected in Athens, many of them without tickets, police are bracing for three days of potential clashes.
'It is not only the 7,500 officers who will patrol the city. Every single employee of the police force is on full alert until after Wednesday,' a police official told Reuters.
Greece has activated a part of its successful Athens 2004 Olympics security plan, including cameras, helicopters and three security perimetres as well as limited vehicle access to the area around the Olympic stadium.
'We feel the need to show again that we as a society and as police are worthy hosts,' Public Order Minister Byron Polidoras said following a security meeting on Sunday.
Polidoras and his senior officers have done their homework in the run-up to the final, liaising with British and Italian police for information regarding known trouble-makers but their main source of concern is potential demonstrations by their own officers on the day of the final.
Police unions seeking pay hikes and improved working conditions have pledged not to go on strike on Wednesday so as not to disrupt the match but have confirmed they will stage a demonstration on the day.
They have planned a rally in Athens some three hours before the start of the final.
'These actions by the unions for the day of the final are wrong. They must not take place,' Polidoras said. 'They could stain this major sports event and embarrass the nation.'
Authorities have said they expect a total of about 35,000 Liverpool and AC Milan fans with tickets and at least another 15,000 who will travel to Greece without a match ticket.
Athens international airport has said Italian and English fans will not meet upon arrival and will be guided to the airport exits from separate routes.
'These fans will not meet at the airport. Our plan is for them not to meet throughout their stay in Athens,' the police official said.
It is the second time in three seasons that Liverpool and Milan have played each other in the Champions League final following their first meeting in Istanbul in 2005 which passed without any major crowd trouble.
