Inside the stadium it also seems a few scuffles erupted between normal Standard fans and security. ******************************************************************************************* Source : Reuters Sixty injured and 14 arrested after Belgian CupAbout 50 supporters and 10 police officers were injured in violent clashes after Saturday's Belgian FA Cup final between Club Bruges and Standard Liege, a police spokesman said. Fourteen Bruges fans were arrested after a large number of supporters attacked the police, launching rocks and other objects at officers about an hour after the match, Brussels' police spokesman Christian De Coninck said on Sunday. "Ten police officers were injured and taken to hospital. Four of them were seriously injured, but I am told they will be okay. They had broken bones and neck injuries," De Coninck said. "About 50 supporters were also injured with 35 treated on the spot. The other 15 were dispatched to various hospitals in the area." The incidents took place outside the stadium after Bruges won the match 1-0 thanks to a 17th minute goal from Mannaseh Ishiaku. De Connick said a follow-up investigation by police and the Belgian football association into Saturday's events would begin on Tuesday. European soccer's governing body UEFA and EU governments have become increasingly concerned following an upsurge in soccer-related violence over the past season, including the death of an Italian police officer in February.

| Liverpool supporters angry at police action, UEFA blames fans for trouble - 24/05/2007Source: The Associated Press UEFA blamed Liverpool fans for ticketing problems that led to trouble ahead of the Champions League final while the British government criticized organizers and the police. Liverpool supporters said Greek police used pepper spray and batons after problems arose over tickets in Athens on Wednesday. Police arrested 128 fans, mostly from Liverpool, because they either had forged tickets or none at all. But hundreds more with genuine tickets were stopped from entering the Olympic stadium for the 2-1 loss to AC Milan and violence broke out when they tried to enter the ground. "I've been tear gassed and hit on the back of the head by the police," said 19-year-old Kenny Roberts, who said he had a genuine ticket but was not allowed in. "I've paid good money for that ticket, I'm a (Liverpool) season ticket holder, and this is just disgraceful. It's terrible organization." Police said Thursday that the officers on duty "followed the lines of their responsibility" while UEFA spokesman William Gaillard said the problems were caused by Liverpool fans trying to get into the stadium without a legitimate ticket. Gaillard also rejected complaints by fans that the stadium used for the 2004 Olympics was not suitable for a major cup final. "It was a suitable venue. It is the stadium where the 2004 Olympics were held and where all the games of the national team are held," Gaillard told BBC Radio Five. "Unfortunately in Britain it is the behavior. Liverpool fans are responsible for the problems before, during and after the game. "Trying to go over the barriers to get into the stadium without tickets ... is not the behavior we can condone. It is very easy to say 'this is not a football stadium.' Milan supporters didn't face the same problems because they didn't behave the same way." Gaillard backed the action of the police and said that the fans' behavior could have led to serious injuries. "In terms of fans pushing and attempting to get over the barriers, with turnstiles there could have been a tragedy," Gaillard said. "At one point the police were overwhelmed and it is much to their credit that there were no dangerous incidents." Meanwhile, the British Embassy in Athens said that the ambassador would be raising concerns about the treatment of the Liverpool fans. "We want the Greek authorities and UEFA to investigate this and put together a full report on how it could be handled better in future," Britain's Foreign Office said in a statement. "There is an issue over some fans with legitimate tickets not being allowed access because of the concern about possible overcrowding in the stadium, and it is clearly not right that fans with legitimate tickets should not see the game."

| Football body takes aim at hooligans - 31/05/2007Source : Viet Nam News Viet Nam’s football governing body has told stadium managers to take measures to combat hooliganism, which it said was becoming a serious problem. An official from the Viet Nam Football Federation (VFF) said immediate steps needed to be taken to stem crowd violence as competition becomes more fierce and tensions mount towards the end of the football season. At least two serious cases of hooliganism in the top-flight V-League were seen earlier in the year. Two anonymous threats to decapitate the son of a coach were also reported. Halida Thanh Hoa were ruled to have lost their sixth round match against Da Nang 3-0 after their fans invaded the pitch and held up play for almost an hour. Despite the punishment, Thanh Hoa’s fans ran riot at the Military Zone 7 Stadium during their 12th round match against Southern Steel-Sai Gon Port on May 20 in HCM City. The visiting fans clashed with home fans, lit fires and threw bottles and chairs onto the field in protest at a referee’s decision. The game was stopped in the 66th minute. Role of stadium Despite hostility between fans, organisers concede that violence can only break out if security is lax - as was the case at the Military Zone 7 stadium, where a handful of security guards tried to contain the situation in the absence of police, who took half an hour to arrive. Conversely, at Binh Duong’s Go Dau stadium and Nam Dinh’s Thien Truong, which have water canon and where more than 100 policemen and security personnel are typically deployed during matches, there hasn’t been a single recorded case of hooliganism in the last two years. Even verbal taunting is rare as troublemakers are kept under surveillance, warned, and even evicted. Police also carry cameras to record evidence. Threatening leaflets Following the violence at the Thanh Hoa-Southern Steel-Sai Gon Port match, the home team was fined VND30 million (US$1,900) for the poor security on their grounds. The last 24 minutes of the match were scheduled to be played tomorrow behind closed doors, with the northern side playing with 10 men. However, Thanh Hoa on Tuesday sent a letter to the VFF agreeing to forfeit the game by a 3-0 margin - as ruled by VFF regulations. Thanh Hoa’s management board made its decision a few days after fans started leaving threatening leaflets at the offices of the club’s headquarters in Ha Noi. At least two serious cases of hooliganism in the top-flight V-League were seen earlier in the year. | |
