Swans fans told to keep off the pitch - 01/05/2007

Source : Western Mail

SWANSEA CITY chairman Huw Jenkins is calling on supporters to stay off the Liberty Stadium pitch on Saturday after the crunch clash with Blackpool.

Jenkins is keen to avoid the chaotic scenes at Brunton Park last weekend which followed the Swans’ vital victory over Carlisle.

Home fans surged on to the pitch after the final whistle and the Swansea players found their route to the dressing rooms blocked.

Star striker Lee Trundle, who had grabbed his team’s first in the last-gasp 2-1 victory, needed a police escort and Swans boss Roberto Martinez expressed his own concerns about what had happened.

Swansea now welcome fourth-placed Blackpool on the final day of the League One season with a sell-out Liberty Stadium expected.

The Swans need to overcome the Tangerines and hope Oldham fail to beat already-relegated Chesterfield to secure a play-off place.

And Jenkins is calling on supporters to stay off the pitch for the safety of everyone.

“What happened at Carlisle was of concern and I was fearful for a few moments, but things were sorted out quite quickly,” said Jenkins.

“The problem clubs face is that it can be very difficult to keep supporters off the field of play if a large number are determined to do so.

“I know it seems to be traditional in the last home game of any season for fans to go on to the pitch – but I would ask our fans on Saturday not to.

“In our present facility, for everyone’s safety, I think supporters should stay in their seats after the final whistle.

“It is the safety of everyone at the game which is our prime concern.”

Jenkins said Swansea’s players might take a lap of honor at the end of the Blackpool game to show their appreciation to supporters.

Jenkins added, “If it’s appropriate, and people want it, the players will come out and the fans can show their appreciation from the safety of their seats.

“It’s going to be an exciting afternoon for us all.”

Swansea are expecting a near 20,000 sell-out with fans expected to snap all available tickets by Thursday.

Meanwhile, defender Alan Tate says an eye injury sustained against Carlisle will not prevent him from lining up against Blackpool.

“At the moment I can’t see a lot out of my eye, but I’m confident it will be OK for Saturday,” said Tate, who required stitches in the wound.

“One of the Carlisle players went for an overhead kick. I could see it coming, but I had to put my head in there because he was inside the box with a good chance of scoring.

“But it was worth it to come away with the three points and keep things going for the final game against Blackpool.”

Oldham remain in the final play-off place in League One on goal difference after beating Brighton 2-1 away to end a four-game run without a win.

“If I’m honest, we thought Brighton would get something against Oldham to put it in our own hands.

“But it didn’t turn out that way and now we’ve got to look over our shoulder at the Oldham result.

“You would expect Oldham to beat Chesterfield, so it could come down to how many goals we can score against a Blackpool side that have plenty to play for themselves with automatic promotion up for grabs.

“It was never going to be easy anyway because Blackpool are a good side, but we’ve got nothing to lose.

“We’ve had some big wins at the Liberty over the past two seasons, beating the likes of Bristol City 7-1 and Carlisle 5-0, so perhaps we’ll have to produce something special again.

“Saying that, who’s to say that Oldham won’t slip up. I’m sure the supporters will be letting us know how they are getting on during the game.”

Fans’ lives at risk in football brawl - 01/05/2007

Source : Swindon Advertiser

A FORMER police officer who was sitting in a Bristol beer garden when Swindon Town fans were attacked said someone could have been killed.

And Trevor Wainwright thinks any plans to ground share with Bristol Rovers should be called off for the safety of residents and pubs in Swindon.

The 55-year-old retired detective was one of the innocent Town fans caught up in the violence that took place at the Inn on the Green, in Horfield, before Saturday's match against Bristol Rovers.

"After I got a pint I sat down in the beer garden with my friend, his son and his son's friend," said Mr Wainwright.

"We sat next to some Bristol Rovers supporters and were talking to them, and there were no problems. It was a good atmosphere.

"There were a group of about 15 lads sat at the rear of the garden, not wearing any shirts, and at first they were well behaved and keeping to themselves."

Mr Wainwright, who said he was one of only three fans in the pub wearing a Town shirt, said the group later sang a song, identifying them as Swindon fans, but thought only those in the garden would have been able to hear it.

"We noticed a young guy opposite us make a call on his phone," he said.

"We didn't think anything of it until a gang of about 35 skinhead yobbos came into the garden and he stood up and pointed to the group of lads.

"I felt really vulnerable because I was in a Swindon shirt, but fortunately they ran straight past me.

"It was really quite a vicious attack and all the yobs were armed with bats, glasses, bottles and bits of wood."

Mr Wainwright said that bottles were flying in both directions, but that the Swindon fans needed to defend themselves. And he said that fans who had run for cover, leaving their phones and wallets on the table, had returned to find them stolen.

"Up until Saturday I had kept an open mind about the ground share option, and I think I probably would have been in favour of it going ahead," he said.

"But after what I saw on Saturday, I fear for the pubs of Swindon and what the residents could be put through.

"I'm not saying there aren't a lot of decent Rovers fans, because the majority are, but there is a yob element to Bristol Rovers.

"And I think that pubs like the Merlin, County Ground Hotel and Queens Tap would suffer from Bristol fans going in and wrecking them.

"It is sad for the genuine fans but why should our police, pubs and the people of Swindon have to put up with it?"

A spokesman for Swindon Town said that Saturday's incident would play a part in the club's decision in any ground share plan.

"We are deeply distressed to hear of the physical attacks on Swindon fans in Bristol on Saturday," he said.

"Any violence associated with football is thoroughly distasteful, but vicious unprovoked assaults on families are completely unacceptable.

"We have requested reports from the safety officer in Bristol and the local police and clearly these incidents will have a significant bearing on any further discussions that may take place regarding the suggested ground share."

Cheltenham Town chairman Paul Baker said he believes Rovers are waiting to see if they go up via the play-offs before they make a decision on which ground to go for as the County Ground has a larger capacity and would mean more money from gate receipts.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that officers were called to a disturbance on Saturday and that one man had been taken to hospital.

"No arrests were made at the pub, but police have confirmed inquiries are continuing," he said.

"A well-rehearsed police operation was put into place and only four arrests for the clash between Bristol Rovers and and Swindon Town were made on the day.

He added that three Bristol Rovers fans and one Swindon Town fan were arrested on the day.

"Two men were arrested on public order offences, another for assault and a juvenile for possession of drugs," he said.

Sheepshanks praises Town fans - 01/05/2007

Source : East Anglian Daily Times + gettyimages

IPSWICH Town chairman David Sheepshanks has criticised Leeds supporters who attacked Blues fans after Saturday's match - while revealing others have contacted the club to express their regret.

He also praised the conduct of the travelling Portman Road faithful who he said were “a credit to themselves” in the face of extreme provocation.

The trouble flared following Alan Lee's late equaliser for Town - an act that has all but condemned Leeds to relegation from the Championship.

Shortly after, thinking the match was over, sections of the Elland Road crowd poured on to the pitch and pelted away fans with bottles, coins, lighters and watch straps.

Last night Mr Sheepshanks said: “We utterly deplore what happened, as, it must be said, do the majority of Leeds United supporters, some of whom have even contacted us to express their regret.

“It was a stark reminder of a past era of football violence that I thought we had managed to leave behind in this country. It will now be a matter for the football authorities to investigate and take whatever action they see fit.

“However what concerns us most is the safety of our players and fans. All of us at Ipswich Town would like to pay tribute to the conduct of our supporters under extreme provocation.

“Once again they were a credit to themselves and the club. Our thoughts and best wishes are with those who were hurt as a result of what happened.

“I would also like to commend our players for their recognition of both what our own fans endured and their display of empathy for the sad plight of the real Leeds United fans who remained at the end of the game.”

The match, which ended 1-1, was held up for half an hour while calm was restored so the last 45 seconds of the game could be played.

But the violence continued outside of the ground and police in riot gear had to disperse angry mobs.

John Taylor, 64, who was staying in Leeds overnight, said: “When my wife and I got back to the hotel there were a load of lads outside a nearby pub taunting about 40 or 50 riot police.

“It was frightening. Some fans were trying to find out where people were from and I imagine they were hoping to find some of us from Ipswich. Fortunately I wasn't wearing the team colours.”

On Sunday night police said they had arrested 11 people in and outside the ground for public disorder offences following the game.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police confirmed yesterday there had been violence in the city centre involving between 70 and 100 people.

“Officers from West Yorkshire Police's operations support unit dispersed the group from three separate public houses, one of which was closed at the request of the licensee,” he said. “The group were hostile towards the officers, including the throwing of missiles. A number of arrests were made and sporadic disorder continued until approx 9pm that evening.”

The Football Association has already confirmed that, together with the police, it will be investigating the violence after Saturday's game and warned that Leeds United and their supporters could face disciplinary actions.

A spokesman for Leeds United Football Club was unavailable for comment last night.

Police appeal to Sunderland fans - 01/05/2007

Source : Luton Today

Don't travel to Luton without a ticket is message

Sunderland fans without tickets for Sunday's championship-deciding clash with Luton are being urged not to travel to the game.

Police expect more than 2,000 Black Cats supporters to journey to already relegated Hatters for the 1pm kick-off match, which could see the north east club land the title.

And the authorities are appealing for everyone who attends the encounter to 'join together in a day of celebration of football'.

Superintendent Martin Darlow, the police commander for the event, said: "We hope this will be a great day. Many supporters will be in fancy dress and we shall be encouraging a carnival like atmosphere.

"At the end of the match both teams will remain on the pitch to acknowledge and thank their supporters.

"However in the interests of safety and to be fair to all supporters attending the game, this will only take place if supporters remain in the stands and keep off the playing area.

"Following the sport of football is a family activity and we want to reassure the majority of law-abiding people attending, that while we are encouraging a party atmosphere Bedfordshire Police will deal firmly with anyone whose actions might spoil it.

"Police officers in the town centre will be on hand to give any guidance and help they can to visitors, but people behaving in a drunk, disorderly or anti-social manner will not be tolerated and will be dealt with robustly.

"This stance will also be enforced in Kenilworth Stadium by stewards and police officers."

Fans' disgust over stewards' actions - 01/05/2007

Source : Mansfield Today News

MANSFIELD Town chairman James Derry has assured supporters the club will fully investigate the 'heavy-handed' reaction of stewards to young fans who ran onto the pitch at Saturday's final whistle.
Disgusted fans have described seeing teenage supporters being punched, kicked, rugby tackled to the ground and grabbed in headlocks after rushing onto the pitch to celebrate the team avoiding relegation.

Club officials are now sifting through CCTV footage to ascertain exactly what happened –– with the Stags vowing to dismiss any steward ‘who has acted inappropriately’.

Said Mr Derry: “This has been an ongoing theme and we have put training into place to try and improve the situation. The stewards were specifically instructed not to be heavy-handed at Saturday’s game but it would appear they have gone against what was said.

“Entering the pitch is a criminal offence but in that situation common sense needs to prevail. It was a nice sunny day, the atmosphere was good and Barnet only had about 100 travelling supporters –– so that was never going to be an issue. It got completely out of hand and we are very disappointed.”

But irate mum Nina Hibbert has blasted the club after seeing pictures on the Chad website of her 15-year-old son Jordon being led from the pitch in a headlock.

“We want to take this further,” she said. “We’ve been to the police and they told us to contact the club but we’ve had no feedback. As a parent it’s very frightening to see this happen.

“We didn’t know about the photos until we put on the internet and when I saw them I just felt sick. Jordon is a season ticket holder and he wants to go back next year –– if his dad lets him.

“I don’t agree with them going on the pitch but they weren’t running on to fight, they were only celebrating. Jordon was quite prepared to walk off the pitch and when he asked the steward to let him go his grip just got tighter.”

The trouble kicked off after the Stags ensured their survival in the Football League with a 2-1 win over Barnet, and one angry fan told Chad tensions had been building all afternoon as stewards intentionally provoked the crowd with hand gestures and tried to intimidate supporters.

But a steward at the game, who asked not to be named, has defended her colleagues –– labelling the fans that stormed the pitch as ‘hooligans’.

She said: “If people go to the ground to watch the match they will be treated with respect but on Saturday they went planning to run on the pitch even though they were told again and again not to. They were acting like hooligans.

“It wasn’t heavy handed, all we were doing was restraining them which is difficult to do when they’re fighting you back. If they want to act like hooligans they are going to be treated like that. If anyone is to blame it’s them.”

Austrian official wants previously convicted hooligans to register with police - 03/05/2007

Source : The Associated Press

Austria's interior minister wants previously convicted hooligans to register with police during the 2008 European Championship.

Guenther Platter said Thursday the purpose of his idea, which he plans to formally propose soon, was to keep violent-prone fans away from stadiums during games, the Austria Press Agency reported.

Under Platter's proposal, individuals who don't register could end up behind bars.

"It's urgently needed because if the violence is in the stadiums, then it's very, very difficult to effectively prevent this violence," Platter was quoted as saying by Austrian broadcaster ORF.

Greece: Five charged for fan’s death - 03/05/2007

Source : Kathimerini

A prosecutor yesterday charged five Olympiakos soccer fans with instigation in the murder of a rival supporter during a mass brawl at Paeania, northeast of Athens, last month.

Prosecutor Eleni Raikou filed the charges against the five fans of the Piraeus club who were brought in to testify last week as the chief suspects in the murder of 22-year-old Panathinaikos fan Michalis Filopoulos.

Two of the five unnamed suspects are members of Olympiakos’s hardcore supporters’ club Thyra 7 (Gate 7). One of the pair is also a member of the governing board of Olympiakos soccer club.

All five suspects have denied taking part in the violence last month, when more than 500 hooligans clashed at a prearranged meeting. The case file will now be forwarded to a magistrate entrusted with the main investigation.

Rangers hit with UEFA fine - 03/05/2007

Source : Sportbox

Rangers have been fined £8,000 for the behaviour of their fans during a UEFA Cup last 16 clash with Osasuna in March.

UEFA have fined the SPL club following a series of violent clashes between travelling fans and Spanish police in the second leg of their tie in Pamplona on March 14.

However, UEFA reserved its harshest punishment for Osasuna, who were fined £31,000 for a lack of organisation at their stadium.

"Osasuna have been fined for serious deficiencies in the organisation of the game, as well as for the improper conduct of their supporters," confirmed a UEFA statement.

"Rangers, meanwhile, have been ordered to pay for the latter offence involving visiting fans of the Scottish team.

"Both clubs have been given three days to appeal." Rangers, who admitted some fans banned from their home matches at Ibrox had acquired tickets, lost the match 1-0 and the tie 2-1 on aggregate.

Rostock, Essen fined over fan violence - 03/05/2007

Source : Reuters

German second division clubs Hansa Rostock and Rot-Weiss Essen have been fined over stadium violence involving Rostock fans in Essen on Monday. Rostock were fined 100,000 euros ($136,100) by the German Soccer Association on Thursday and Essen 30,000. Rostock will also be forced to close the standing areas for their home match against Koblenz on May 6, the DFB said.

The eastern German club would lose about 200,000 euros in ticket revenue as a result, according to German sports news agency SID. Both clubs had accepted the ruling, the DFB said.

Fourteen people were injured and several detained by police after the trouble began early in the second half.

Fans in the Rostock section of the ground set fire to the terraces and a flag, causing panic. Play was interrupted for about 15 minutes when police moved in to restore order. The match finished 0-0.

Rostock, second in the standings and close to winning promotion to the Bundesliga with three weeks of the season left, have had other problems with their fans this season.

Schalke 04's Germany striker Gerald Asamoah, who emigrated to the country from Ghana as a child, was racially taunted during a German Cup match in September against Rostock's regional team who were fined 20,000 euros.

Cyprus: Police boycott threat after hooligans run riot - 05/05/2007

Source : Cyprus Mail

POLICE have threatened to boycott high-risk sports events after Larnaca’s Police Chief was injured and fires were set during a basketball match between AEL Limassol and APOEL Nicosia at the Kition Stadium in Larnaca on Thursday night.

The serious incidents took place not just in Larnaca, but continued along the motorway between Kofinou and Ayios Theodoros, leaving police and fire services struggling to keep up with all the fires and violent incidents that took place before and after the game had ended.

In fact, the match was delayed for half an hour due to clashes between police officers and AEL fans, who objected to the presence of over 20 APOEL fans in their section of the stadium. Finally the latter were moved to another area.
Larnaca Police Chief Soteris Hadjichristofis and three other officers were slightly injured during the clashes.

A National Guard soldier was also taken to Larnaca General Hospital after suffering respiratory problems, brought on by fires that were started, not only in the stadium’s vicinity, but also on the motorway, the Dromolaxia Industrial Estate and the river bridge.

“After this, we are debating very seriously the participation of the police in such matches,” Hadjichristofis said yesterday. “I believe this does not honour us as Cyprus. The police leadership will think about policing such matches in the future, where there are fanatical fans.”

He added: “We have told the police leadership that it must respect the rights and the positions of our officers who go to stadiums and are mercilessly assaulted by fanatical fans.”

Two hurt as soccer fans clash at derby match

Two soccer fans were taken to hospital with head wounds following a clash during the Absa Cup semifinal derby match between Ajax Cape Town and Santos at Athlone Stadium on Sunday.

Fans of Mamelodi Sundowns, which had already won its semifinal match, were at the stadium backing Santos. Things got heated in the stands with Ajax and Sundowns supporters eventually getting into a brawl.

Spectators Kasief Wagner and Tembela Mahlati had to be taken to hospital for stitches to head wounds, said Salama Joseph of Melomed 24 ambulance services.

Police spokesperson Captain Elliott Sinyangana confirmed last night that a group of spectators had been waving banners and that people had gotten upset because they could not see the game. No one was arrested.

Cars torched in Euroleague title celebrations

Police detained 29 people Monday after fans celebrating Panathinaikos' Euroleague victory torched two cars and two trucks, authorities said.

The Athens team won its fourth Euroleague title Sunday, beating defending champion CSKA Moscow 93-91.

Some 5,000 police had been deployed to provide security during the championship at the Olympic Hall.

Police also said 181 people were detained trying to enter the stadium without a ticket. Another nine were arrested with forged tickets and media accreditation passes.

The heavy security was seen as part of preparations for policing at the May 23 Champions League soccer final in Athens between Liverpool and AC Milan.

Peterborough United - Rochdale AFC - 07/05/2007

Source : Goal

Soccer fan banned for life

Peterborough has banned a fan for life for punching an opposing player in the face after a match.

Rochdale midfielder Glen Poole was punched in the face by the unidentified supporter after fans ran on to the field following Saturday's 3-3 draw in League Two. Peterborough said the fan has been arrested by police.

"I don't really know what happened at the end but it's not acceptable if it's what I heard, and the club will be punished," Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson said. "We stressed to the fans to stay off the pitch and I would have thought they would have adhered to our request, but that sometimes happens and it was only a minority."

******************************************************************************************

TWO soccer stars chased down a thug who attacked one of their team-mates during a pitch invasion by fans and handed him to police.

Rochdale forward Glenn Poole was punched to the ground after Peterborough United fans invaded the pitch following the League Two game in Cambridgeshire on Saturday.

Eyewitnesses said a man confronted the Dale winger and made gestures at him before punching him to the floor.

Poole's team-mates David Flitcroft and David Perkins chased the man across the pitch through hundreds of fans and caught him. They then handed him over to police, who arrested him.

Eyewitnesses who were at Peterborough's London Road ground said they "could not believe what they were seeing".

One Rochdale supporter said: "The Peterborough fans were chanting `on the pitch' all through the game and at the final whistle there was a big pitch invasion as there sometimes are at these kind of games.

"One of them ran up to Glenn - possibly one of the most mild-mannered players on the pitch - and cracked him.

"A couple of the Rochdale players saw what had happened and were chasing the attacker through hundreds of Peterborough fans who had invaded the pitch. They eventually caught him and the police arrested him."

Peterborough journalist Alan Swann said that Poole had shown "remarkable restraint".

He said the incident `left a nasty taste after a really good game and wasn't a nice thing to see'.

The sides had shared a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Rochdale chief executive Colin Garlick praised the two players involved.

He said: "They were both alert and quick and their response is typical of the team spirit we have here."

An FA spokesman said they were looking into the incident.

A 16-year-old youth has been charged with three offences including assault by beating and is due to appear at youth court next week.

Mbabane Swallows - Highlanders - 06/05/2007

Source : The Swazi Observer

About 20 supporters seriously injured

ABOUT 20 supporters sustained serious injuries after the violence that broke out during a bloody derby pitting city rivals Mbabane Swallows against Highlanders yesterday.

The match was played at the Trade Fair Ground. Most of them were treated and discharged at the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital (RFM) while others opted for other health centres.
Seven seriously injured supporters were found waiting to be attended at the emergency ward at RFM about half an hour after the match was abondoned.

Most of them had cuts inflicted by broken beverages bottles flung at them during the skirmish.

One casualty was former Swallows’ coach Zenzele ‘Ace’ Dlamini, who was acting as a Good Samaritan.

Dlamini was hit on the leg with a stone as he went from the Royal Boix where he was sitted to rescue a supporter that was lying down haplessly and bleeding profusely.

“I saw this Swallows’ supporter bleeding and beiung unattended and I rushed to save her in the midst of the skirmish. The next thing I was hit,” said the soldier by profession.

Dlamini did not suffer a severe injury and he was attended by first aiders at the ground.

Another supporter suspected that he was stabbed with a sharp object believed to be a screw driver. Some of the supporters were received first aid from the teams’ doctors before making their way to their respective homes.

Police PRO Superitendent Vusi Masuku, when reached for comment last night, confirmed that most supporters were beaten with stones.

It was, however, still uncertain as to how many supporters were casualties during the derby the football fratenity would love to quickly forget.

Pandemonium broke out about 20 minutes from time. The major cause was that the two teams’ supporters were sharing the same stand situated on the left-hand side of the royal box.

Given the rivalry between the two sides, such should have been avoided at all cost. Police officers manning security at the venue had to fire teargas canisters before the violence subsided.

But they reacted a bit late when a number of innocent supporters had already been injured.

AZ Alkmaar - Ajax Amsterdam - Cup - 06/05/2007

Source: DutchNews.nl

Some 50 arrests after Ajax celebrations

Some 50 people were arrested and one person was injured when riots broke out on Amsterdam’s Leidseplein on Monday night following the celebratory appearance of Dutch Cup winners Ajax.

Earlier in the evening around 10,000 Ajax fans congregated on the Museumplein to give a hero’s welcome to the team that beat AZ Alkmaar in a thrilling penalty shoot-out (8-7) on Sunday.

After the official reception, groups of supporters gathered at the Leidseplein despite the presence of riot police. According to ANP news agency, the atmosphere was ‘grim’. When riot police moved in to clear the area, football supporters started breaking shop windows and challenging the police.

The area was calm again by around 10pm, said ANP.

Before the riots, police chief Bernard Welten warned that if supporters did not behave themselves it would be the end of such events on the Museumplein. Last year’s celebrations led to similar riots.
