More than 50 hurt in Israeli football crush - 06/05/2007
Source: Reuters
More than 50 football fans were injured, at least two of them seriously, in a crush when celebrating supporters invaded the pitch at the end of an Israeli Premier League soccer match on Sunday, medics said.
Dozens in the crowd became pressed against a perimeter fence as fans tried to get on to the pitch. Others escaped on to the playing area through a narrow gate that then gave way and collapsed under the weight of the crush.
Yael Bosem Levy, the spokeswoman for Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem said two supporters were in serious condition and were being treated for head and chest injuries. Five others were receiving treatment for less serious injuries, she added.
Israel's Channel 5 television said two other fans were in what it called a "serious to moderate condition" at the Sha'are Zedek Medical Centre, the city's other major hospital.
Fans at Jerusalem's Teddy Kollek Stadium were celebrating after Beitar Jerusalem beat Hapoel Petah Tikva 2-0, taking the league leaders closer to the Premier League title.
"The crowd burst on to the field against all expected scenarios, and unfortunately there are injuries," Jerusalem police commander Ilan Franco said.
More than two dozen ambulances rushed to the scene to take the injured to hospital, medics said.
Several dozen other fans sustained lighter injuries, medic Ronen Beshari told Reuters
National police chief Dudi Cohen said the incident was "very grave" and said he had appointed an investigation panel which would begin work on Monday morning.
As Beitar Jerusalem were unable to clinch the title on Sunday, Franco said police had not prepared for the pitch invasion and the premature celebrations.
Officers had apparently deployed in relatively small numbers for a match attended by a crowd of around 15,000 -- short of the stadium capacity of 23,000.
Television reports said the fences at the stadium were due to be removed next week.
A crowd crush in 2001 when Maccabi Haifa won the title left two teenagers seriously injured. One has remained in a coma in hospital since then.
However, fences at most Israeli grounds have been removed during the past two seasons after initial experiments showed that fans do not regularly invade the playing area.
Israeli pitch invasions are usually limited to when a team wins the league championship. Invading the pitch is a criminal offence in Israel and offenders are often dealt with harshly.

Halifax - York: New arrest over pitch invasion - 15/05/2007
Source: Evening Courrier
A FIFTH person has been charged following disorder between Halifax Town and York City fans at the match on January 23. The 16-year-old has been charged with throwing a missile on to the pitch and invading the playing area.
He will appear at Calderdale Magistrates Court tomorrow.
Earlier this month police charged two 16-year-olds, a 15-year-old and an 18-year-old with a range of offences in connection with the incident.
After the match police received reports of assault, threatening behaviour and criminal damage after a pitch invasion in the last minutes of the Nationwide Conference game at the Shay.
The charges follow consultation with Calderdale Police operations and CID aided by North Yorkshire Police, plus the Crown Prosecution Service.
Inspector Simon Spencer said: "This type of behaviour is not acceptable. It causes safety concerns to people who want to enjoy football as a family event."
He said football banning orders may be sought if the five people are convicted.
If successful, the orders will prevent them attending any UK football matches from the Conference League upwards, plus any England games.
"Football banning orders will send out a clear message that if you conduct in violent behaviour then you will be vigorously pursued," said Insp Spencer.

Police warning to travelling Blues fans - 03/05/2007
Source: Birmingham Mail
BLUES' fans were today warned to be on their best behaviour or risk spoiling the jubilant club's Premiership promotion celebrations.
The team is planning to party in front of thousands of travelling fans at the end of the clash with Preston that could see them clinch the Championship title.
But Lancashire Police have warned the celebrations could be pulled if over-excited fans invade the pitch.
And they warned supporters without tickets for Sunday's game not to travel.
The high-stakes match, which Preston need to win to stand any chance of making it to the play-offs, is already sold out to away fans and a capacity crowd is expected to pack the ground.
Insp Richard Cox, of Lancashire Police, said: "This is going to be an exciting match for both sets of fans and we want everyone to have a great time.
"We hope those who make the trip will have an enjoyable visit, but my concern is people turning up without tickets could spoil the atmosphere for everyone.
"At the end of the game Birmingham will have a short celebration of their promotion in front of their supporters provided they remain in their seats.
"Any pitch invasion or encroachment by supporters will prevent this celebration from taking place."
There will be an increased police presence on the day of the clash, the final of the season, and police warned troublemakers that they risked missing Blues return to the top flight next season.
Insp Cox added: "My message to anyone who might be thinking about causing problems or getting involved in any disorder is to think again.
"We will deal with troublemakers swiftly and robustly. Anyone arrested for any football-related offence can expect to be put before the courts.
"We will request a banning order preventing them from attending football matches for the next three years."
Don't miss Monday's and Tuesday's Mail for the best coverage of Blues at Preston and their promotion party.
