United yobs brick visiting fans' coach
HOOLIGANS attacked a coach holding away fans after Leeds United's crushing home defeat by Sunderland last night. Roy Keane watches the game Bricks were hurled at the vehicle at around 9.45pm as it stood in the visitors' coach park outside Elland Road, near the ground's Billy Bremner statue. The troublemakers fled on foot as police moved in to deal with the disturbance. No arrests were made. Unconfirmed reports today said that an 11-year-old girl was injured in the incident. Before the game at least one arrest was made when Leeds and Sunderland yobs clashed on the M621 slip road roundabout near Elland Road's McDonald's restaurant. The Wearsiders brought 5,000 fans to the match – one of the biggest away followings seen at United in recent seasons. Inside the stadium, two Leeds supporters attempted to confront Sunderland boss Roy Keane at the beginning of the second half before being led away by stewards. Keane played down the rumpus after the final whistle, telling reporters: "Was that for me? I thought they had got lost." The Irishman is a hate figure for Leeds fans because of his playing days with the Elland Road outfit's arch-rivals Manchester United. West Yorkshire Police's Insp Melvyn Stubbs stressed today that the "vast majority" of supporters at last night's game had been well-behaved. United's 3-0 defeat leaves them third from bottom of the Coca-Cola Championship. The result heaped more pressure on Leeds boss Kevin Blackwell, who was forced to listen to his own supporters repeatedly calling for his head during the match. _________________

| Doncaster: Death threat thug jailed - 02/09/2006
Source: http://www.doncasterfreepress.co.uk/
A FOOTBALL hooligan will be watching England from behind bars today after he threatened to kill another fan with a hammer during a World Cup melee in Doncaster. Tony Cooper, aged 20, has been jailed for nine months following a massive 80-man disturbance in Stainforth when England played Paraguay in June. Now police are warning other hooligans they face similar repercussions if trouble flares during today's match against Andorra. They say even minor disturbances could lead to supporters being banned from England matches and those of their club side. The head of South Yorkshire Police's football banning unit, Phil Woodward, told The Star: "We're warning people to behave themselves, enjoy the game and, yes, have a drink, but don't engage in any violence or disorder. "The police are prepared for any disorder and arrests will be made." Cooper was arrested after trouble erupted in the town after England's televised World Cup opener on June 10. Officers arrived at the melee near his home on Princess Avenue to see him wielding a hammer and threatening to kill a man who had assaulted his brother. Police had to restrain him with leg irons when he resisted arrest. In interview Cooper was asked if he would have used the hammer had police not arrived, he replied: "I would have smashed him with it." He pleaded guilty to affray and possession of an offensive weapon. But defence barrister Michael Cane-Soothill said: "His involvement in this incident came when he saw his brother under attack. He went to get the hammer from his own house or that of his brother. "He has a very high degree of loyalty to his family and friends and perhaps on this occasion that led him into trouble. "In one way that loyalty is an admirable quality but what my client needs to do is temper it on occasions. He is older and wiser now and is 21 in the New Year." The court heard Cooper had previous convictions including robbery, ABH and driving offences. Judge Christopher Attwool said there was no alternative to custody, telling Cooper: "You have pleaded guilty to two offences of violence. This was an ugly, nasty incident in the street when there were a lot of people around. You also have a bad record of violence." Cooper was sentenced to three months for carrying the hammer and nine months for affray, to be served concurrently.

| Wolves football 'savages' jailed over drink-fuelled rampage - 22/09/2006
Source : http://www.24dash.com
A pack of Wolves fans who savaged innocent bystanders during a drink-fuelled rampage through the West End were each jailed for up to 16 months today.
CCTV footage captured the 15-strong gang punching, kicking and head-butting their victims during a string of pre-planned skirmishes.
None of their victims stood a chance as the soccer thugs mindlessly piled in mob-handed.
Two men were booted repeatedly in the head as they lay helplessly on the ground.
London's Southwark Crown Court heard the Saturday afternoon violence followed a Coca Cola Championship clash between West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers on October 2, 2004.
However, only a handful of those arrested, aged 18-44 and including family men with children, had been to the match.
They were variously charged with violent disorder and affray. Some pleaded guilty. The remainder were convicted by a jury. Most had previous convictions, including a number for football-related violence.
Passing sentence, Judge Paul Dodgson told the defendants: "The video that we have seen time and time again in this case shows, in my judgment, a truly shocking scene. Many of you are family men - you have children.
"This was a Saturday evening, a time when Leicester Square was packed with people.
"For your gang to behave in this way must have been a frightening, if not terrifying, event for any onlookers.
"If there were families with children in the area, the effect on them must have been terrible."
As dozens of their friends listened from a packed public gallery, he continued: "Your conduct was of such a nature that I would be failing in my duty if I did not pass sentences to deter others from such conduct."
Outside court, the investigating officer in the case, Detective Inspector Joseph Hackett, said: "We are delighted with the sentencing. It took a long time to get an end result.
"It is a culmination of a joint operation between the Metropolitan Police and West Midlands Police.
"I believe the sentences imposed were deserved.
"I wish to reiterate to anybody coming to the West End that, as you can see from the quality of the CCTV, anybody that commits offences will be identified and it doesn't matter how long it takes, we will go to anywhere in the country and bring those offenders to justice."
Earlier the court heard how street camera operators first noticed the gang as they congregated near Charing Cross, central London, before barging their way through crowds of shoppers to Leicester Square.
As they neared their destination, some were seen wrapping scarves across their faces or pulling hoods over their heads.
Eloise Marshall, prosecuting, said: "There was no doubt this was done in a bid to conceal their identities."
Seconds later they approached a small group of young men standing outside the Tube station.
One was promptly seen to fall to the ground beneath a flurry of punches. His head was then repeatedly kicked and stamped on. Shortly afterwards another camera caught a second man receiving similar treatment.
A third was almost downed by a running punch.
Others, seen trying to back away from the trouble, were also hit.
Those jailed included Steven Powner, 32, of Old Hednesford Road, Cannock, near Walsall, who was at the forefront of the violence and had drunk 14 pints of lager. He was sentenced to nine months in prison and a football banning order, preventing him from attending any football ground within the UK or abroad on match days for six years after his release.
The others were Matthew Cooper, 18, of St Michael's Court, Wolverhampton, who got 16 months and a football banning order for six years.
Craig Eagleton, 27, of Darlston Lane, Bilston, near Wolverhampton, got 10 months in prison and a football banning order of six years.
Gregory Elliot, 41, of Slatch House Road, Bearwood, Birmingham, got 12 months and a football banning order for six years.
James Hemmings, 25, of High View Drive, Kingswinford, Warwickshire, was sentenced to eight months in prison and a football banning order for six years.
Steven Howe, 35, of Bee Lane, Wolverhampton, got 12 months and a football banning order for six years.
Brendan Kelly, 46, of Amleside Close, Bilston, was sentenced to nine months and a football banning order for six years.
Paul Martin, 27, of Church Walk, Donnington, Telford, was sentenced to seven months and a football banning order for six years.
Michael Evans, 42, of Lawn Road, Wolverhampton, got eight months and a football banning order for six years.
Lee Millard, 20, of Holywell Street, Wolverhampton, got seven months and a football banning order for six years.
Twins Simon and Stephen Pearce, 21, of Arden Place, Bilston, both received eight months in prison and football banning orders for six years.
Wayne Ratcliffe, a 41-year-old martial arts expert, of Biddlestone Place, Darlaston, near Wolverhampton, got 10 months and a football banning order for six years.
Thomas Slater, 21, of Hydes Road, Wednesbury, near Wolverhampton, was sentenced to seven months and a football banning order for six years.
Christopher Spilsbury, 24, of Pendeford Avenue, Wolverhampton, was sentenced to a 120 hours community punishment order.
