| KNVB Cup: ADO Den Haag to visit Ajax in third round - 22/09/2006
Source : Ajax website
Ajax face ADO Den Haag in the third round of the KNVB Cup (the Dutch cup competition previously known as Gatorade Cup and Amstel Cup). This was the outcome of the draw, immediately after the last matches in the second round on Thursday evening. Ajax's rivals from The Hague will come to the Amsterdam ArenA on 07, 08 or 09 November. The exact date and kick-off time will be announced later today. Ajax USA will then update both this news report and the matches index page accordingly.
Remarkably, ADO Den Haag's second round cup fixture was also played at the Amsterdam ArenA. The Eredivisie side faced Türkiyemspor, Amsterdam's 'Turkish' club, playing in the Hoofdklasse of Dutch amateur football. Den Haag won easily: 1-6, thanks to no less than four Eljero Elia goals. The setting was bizarre: the match it was played in front of only 300 spectators at the massive ArenA, all of them supporters of Türkiyemspor. The choice for the ArenA was safety measure: Türkiyemspor's accomodation was deemed unsafe for a match against a 'high risk' club such as ADO Den Haag. Authorities feared trouble between Den Haag and Ajax supporters at the amateur ground. Eventually, no Den Haag were allowed into the ArenA at all, allegedly because the The Hague club failed to submit their reservation of a supporters' train in time.
It is as yet unknown whether the Den Haag support will be welcome at the ArenA for the cup fixture in November. In the aftermath of the attack on the ADO Den Haag clubhouse by Ajax hooligans, on 11 February of this year, authorities, clubs and the KNVB decided that away fans are not welcome at Eredivisie matches between ADO Den Haag and Ajax for at least three seasons. Will an exception be made for cup games...? It is yet to be decided. _________________

| Soccer ban for pub thugs - 22/09/2006
Source : Blackpool Today
TROUBLEMAKERS in Blackpool pubs and clubs could be banned from Bloomfield Road. In what is believed to be the first partnership of its kind in the country, Blackpool Football Club has signed up to the resort's Pub Watch scheme and its 'banned from one, banned from all' policy. In joining the 130 pubs and clubs who have pledged to make the town safer, Seasiders' bosses have promised to ban any supporter who causes trouble. An individual can be banned from all venues if they are a persistent problem. Barring happens only as a last resort and has to be ratified by a panel from the Blackpool Licensees' Forum. Exclusions can last from three months to a lifetime. Adrian Clay, chair of the forum and boss at town centre pub The Litten Tree, said: "This is a unique link-up between ourselves and the football club. "We've found links between those causing trouble in our pubs and trouble at football matches, so it's the next step towards curbing that violence. "We get information about possible hooligans and large crowds in the build-up to games. "No-one wants their day or night out in Blackpool ruined by thugs. By bringing the football club on board with Pub Watch, we're looking to make the whole town a safer and better place." In February, Blackpool was the scene of chaos as Seasiders fans clashed with rivals from Nottingham Forest. Punch-ups flared outside pubs during the day, in the ground during the 90 minutes and through the town centre at night. Jayne Anderson-Dixon, senior licensee at Bloomfield Road, said: "A lot of people who drink in the town are fans here too and we're all for getting involved in anything that can help the police and other licensed premises. "Genuine, law-abiding fans have nothing to worry about but the hooligans not already banned from Bloomfield Road should be wary. We will not take the action lightly but those who go causing trouble in town are not welcome here. "It is a great opportunity for us all to keep a close monitor on the troublemakers and unsavoury characters neither the football club or pubs want to see." _________________

| Wolves football 'savages' jailed over drink-fuelled rampage - 22/09/2006
Source : 24dash
A pack of Wolves fans who savaged innocent bystanders during a drink-fuelled rampage through the West End were each jailed for up to 16 months today.
CCTV footage captured the 15-strong gang punching, kicking and head-butting their victims during a string of pre-planned skirmishes.
None of their victims stood a chance as the soccer thugs mindlessly piled in mob-handed.
Two men were booted repeatedly in the head as they lay helplessly on the ground.
London's Southwark Crown Court heard the Saturday afternoon violence followed a Coca Cola Championship clash between West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers on October 2, 2004.
However, only a handful of those arrested, aged 18-44 and including family men with children, had been to the match.
They were variously charged with violent disorder and affray. Some pleaded guilty. The remainder were convicted by a jury. Most had previous convictions, including a number for football-related violence.
Passing sentence, Judge Paul Dodgson told the defendants: "The video that we have seen time and time again in this case shows, in my judgment, a truly shocking scene. Many of you are family men - you have children.
"This was a Saturday evening, a time when Leicester Square was packed with people.
"For your gang to behave in this way must have been a frightening, if not terrifying, event for any onlookers.
"If there were families with children in the area, the effect on them must have been terrible."
As dozens of their friends listened from a packed public gallery, he continued: "Your conduct was of such a nature that I would be failing in my duty if I did not pass sentences to deter others from such conduct."
Outside court, the investigating officer in the case, Detective Inspector Joseph Hackett, said: "We are delighted with the sentencing. It took a long time to get an end result.
"It is a culmination of a joint operation between the Metropolitan Police and West Midlands Police.
"I believe the sentences imposed were deserved.
"I wish to reiterate to anybody coming to the West End that, as you can see from the quality of the CCTV, anybody that commits offences will be identified and it doesn't matter how long it takes, we will go to anywhere in the country and bring those offenders to justice."
Earlier the court heard how street camera operators first noticed the gang as they congregated near Charing Cross, central London, before barging their way through crowds of shoppers to Leicester Square.
As they neared their destination, some were seen wrapping scarves across their faces or pulling hoods over their heads.
Eloise Marshall, prosecuting, said: "There was no doubt this was done in a bid to conceal their identities."
Seconds later they approached a small group of young men standing outside the Tube station.
One was promptly seen to fall to the ground beneath a flurry of punches. His head was then repeatedly kicked and stamped on. Shortly afterwards another camera caught a second man receiving similar treatment.
A third was almost downed by a running punch.
Others, seen trying to back away from the trouble, were also hit.
Those jailed included Steven P*****, 32, of Old Hednesford Road, Cannock, near Walsall, who was at the forefront of the violence and had drunk 14 pints of lager. He was sentenced to nine months in prison and a football banning order, preventing him from attending any football ground within the UK or abroad on match days for six years after his release.
The others were Matthew C*****, 18, of St Michael's Court, Wolverhampton, who got 16 months and a football banning order for six years.
Craig E*******, 27, of Darlston Lane, Bilston, near Wolverhampton, got 10 months in prison and a football banning order of six years.
Gregory E*****, 41, of Slatch House Road, Bearwood, Birmingham, got 12 months and a football banning order for six years.
James H*******, 25, of High View Drive, Kingswinford, Warwickshire, was sentenced to eight months in prison and a football banning order for six years.
Steven H***, 35, of Bee Lane, Wolverhampton, got 12 months and a football banning order for six years.
Brendan K****, 46, of Amleside Close, Bilston, was sentenced to nine months and a football banning order for six years.
Paul M*****, 27, of Church Walk, Donnington, Telford, was sentenced to seven months and a football banning order for six years.
Michael E****, 42, of Lawn Road, Wolverhampton, got eight months and a football banning order for six years.
Lee M******, 20, of Holywell Street, Wolverhampton, got seven months and a football banning order for six years.
Twins Simon and Stephen P*****, 21, of Arden Place, Bilston, both received eight months in prison and football banning orders for six years.
Wayne R********, a 41-year-old martial arts expert, of Biddlestone Place, Darlaston, near Wolverhampton, got 10 months and a football banning order for six years.
Thomas S*****, 21, of Hydes Road, Wednesbury, near Wolverhampton, was sentenced to seven months and a football banning order for six years.
Christopher S********, 24, of Pendeford Avenue, Wolverhampton, was sentenced to a 120 hours community punishment order. _________________

| Apollonas punished for fan violence - 23/09/2006
Source : Cyprus Mail
APOLLONAS Limassol have been forced by the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) to play their next home game at a neutral venue as punishment for violent incidents that took place during the team’s derby against AEL Limassol.
Apollonas fans, disgruntled at their team’s 2-4 defeat by arch rivals AEL, set fire to seats and hurled objects onto the pitch, even as fire fighters tried to put out the flames.
The CFA Disciplinary Committee took into consideration Apollonas fans’ history of football violence, handing them the maximum fine of £1,500 for the incidents caused during the super cup match.
The Limassol team will play at a neutral venue for their game against Ethnikos Achnas in two weeks’ time.
So far in this year’s championship, which began in mid August, the CFA has handed out a total of ten penalties.
Olympiakos Nicosia player Afonso Ivo Rafael Brandao was fined £200 for hitting his Nea Salamina Famagusta opponent in the face with his elbow, while Enosis Paphos player Ioannis Sfakianakis was banned for one game game for kicking an opponent in the leg.
Enosis Neon Paralimniou got fined £100 plus £110 for fans throwing objects onto the pitch and Omonia Nicosia was made to pay £750 for the serious incidents that took place during the team’s clash with Ayia Napa.
AEL Limassol got penalised £1,000 for causing serious incidents and a further £200 for entering the pitch during celebrations for the team’s win over rivals Apollonas. _________________

| Panathinaikos president attacks hooligans, journalists - 21/09/2006
Source: Ekathimerini.com
Last Thursday’s fan behavior incited by a newspaper, Vardinoyiannis says
Six days after some of its fans chased the coach off the field following a UEFA Cup draw against Ukraine’s Metalurh Zaporizhya, soccer club Panathinaikos yesterday warned the team’s fan clubs that if they fail to control their members and isolate the few troublemakers, any formal relations will be severed.
Club President Yiannis Vardinoyiannis, who himself became the target of fan abuse and threats following Panathinaikos’s poor performance last Thursday, which resulted in a 1-1 draw, and had to be escorted out of the stadium, accused journalists of inciting trouble.
“A certain newspaper encouraged our fans to do what they actually did in case we did not play well,” Vardinoyiannis said, adding that he had received a letter from the Sports Journalists’ Union (PSAT) a letter unjustly accusing him of inciting hooligans to attack journalists. “A lot of (hooligan-related) incidents are being reported as ‘protests’ (at the state of Greek soccer) when they are pure incidents of vandalism. How can you call destroying a stadium a protest? You should report the truth and call things by their proper names.”
Referring to the creation of the Super League, a new body created by club owners to run the Greek soccer championship, he said: “Football club owners took matters into their hands and decided to create something new. A lot of you are sneering at our effort. You expect us to reach the level (of organization) of, say, English soccer right away. This can’t be done. It takes time. We would welcome your suggestions, too.”
A day after the Metalurh match, Vardinoyiannis fired the team’s Swedish coach, Hans Backe, less than two months into the new soccer season. The decision was criticized by many as yet another example of a Greek team finding an easy scapegoat. Changing coaches often is the norm; Panathinaikos has gone through over a dozen in the past 10 seasons. Vardinoyiannis did not directly criticize Backe, saying many are to blame for the team’s uninspired performance. He did say, however, that coaches wishing to work in the Greek league must have a special “understanding” of the conditions.
“Terminating a coach’s contract is a serious matter. We do not want this to happen, but it happens in many other clubs, not just ours. Working conditions in Greece are unique. Choosing a coach must be done with care. A CV tells you nothing. We need to hire a coach who can acclimatize quickly and live up to the special requirements of the Greek championship,” he said, indirectly indicating that he would prefer Serbia’s Dusan Bajevic, who has won seven Greek championships and now works for Red Star Belgrade. _________________

| Santos 'keeper clashes with fans after blunder - 21/09/2006
Source: Reuters
Santos goalkeeper Fabio Costa clashed with a group of his team's fans as he left the stadium after making a blunder in the 1-1 draw with Fluminense, Brazilian media said.
An unhappy night for the burly goalkeeper began when his mistake allowed Fluminense to snatch a late equaliser in the Brazilian championship match.
Costa misjudged a Fluminense free kick and Santos defender Luiz Alberto headed the ball into his own net.
As he left the field, Costa was involved in an angry exchange with Santos fans behind his goal during which he was seen to make insulting gestures.
Brazilian media said that on leaving the stadium later, the goalkeeper lashed out at one fan who insulted him and was attacked by a group of around 15 supporters who kicked and hit him.
Security men pulled the fans off him and Costa was left with a bruised cheek and cut finger.
Santos had taken the lead midway through the second half with a controversial penalty awarded when Rodrigo Tabata appeared to trip in the penalty area. Cleber Santana fired home.
The draw left Vanderlei Luxemburgo's team third in the championship with 40 points from 25 games but they fell nine behind leaders Sao Paulo, who won 1-0 at Sao Caetano.
Sao Paulo's winner was a fortuitous effort from midfielder Richarlyson, whose intended cross found its way through the Sao Caetano defence and into the net in the 47th minute.
Gremio stayed four points behind Sao Paulo in second place by thumping Ponte Preta 4-0, following their win by the same score over Botafogo three days earlier.
Hugo fired in from close range in the 20th minute and then set up the second for Lucas just before halftime. Argentine substitute German Herrera added two more late in the game.
South American champions Internacional dropped to fourth when they lost 1-0 to a controversial goal at Figueirense.
Marquinhos Parana scored the winner as referee Heber Lopes over-ruled a linesman who had waved for offside.
The Florianopolis team, who had not won in their previous eight outings, moved up to seventh with 36 points.
Defending champions Corinthians remained languishing dangerously close to the relegation zone after being held 1-1 at home by Vasco da Gama.
After briefly kneeling down and praying over the ball, midfielder Andrade fired home a free kick for Vasco in the first half.
Rafael Moura scrambled the equaliser in the 71st minute shortly after Corinthians coach Emerson Leao had made a triple substitution. _________________

| German soccer federation launches racism probe - 18/09/2006
Source: Reuters
The German soccer federation (DFB) said on Monday it had launched an investigation into 'racist incidents' at Saturday's Bundesliga match between Alemannia Aachen and Borussia Moenchengladbach.
'During Saturday's match in Aachen, there was racist abuse directed first from the Aachen fan area at Moenchengladbach's Brazilian striker Kahe and then from the Moenchengladbach supporters at Aachen's Zambian player Moses Sichone,' the DFB said in a statement on its website.
According to German media reports and spokesmen for the two clubs, referee Michael Weiner had an announcement broadcast in the stadium at halftime threatening to halt proceedings if the Aachen fans did not stop chanting 'Asylant', German for asylum seeker, at Kahe.
After the announcement, the Moenchengladbach fans began abusing Sichone, the reports and spokesmen said. Aachen won the match 4-2.
Racism has been a prominent issue in the German media in recent weeks in the run-up to Sunday's state election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in which the far-right National Democratic Party (NPD) won 7.2 percent of the vote.
The DFB last week fined Hansa Rostock's regional league side 20,000 euros ($25,310) after fans chanted racist slogans at Schalke 04's black striker Gerald Asamoah in a German Cup match. Rostock is in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Moenchengladbach spokesman Markus Aretz told Reuters on Monday the club would use its next home match to step up its campaign against racism.
'This is something that does not belong in a soccer stadium,' he said. 'We are surprised that our fans were involved in something like that because we have not had any problems of that kind before.'
Thorsten Pracht, a spokesman for Alemannia Aachen, said the club very much regretted what had happened and it fully supported the action taken by the referee.
The club already had an active campaign against racism in soccer and this would be intensified in light of Saturday's incidents, he told Reuters.
The DFB said Weiner had prepared a report on the incidents for a special investigating committee and both clubs had been asked to make immediate statements.
Aachen and Moenchengladbach both said they would likely provide their statements to the DFB on Monday. _________________
