| Goalkeeper's attacker is jailed - 31/01/2006
Source: BBC
A Staffs football fan who ran onto the pitch and punched a goalkeeper during a match has been jailed for four months. Martin Andrew Wilson, 19, of Blurton, Stoke-on-Trent, admitted attacking Queens Park Rangers keeper Simon Royce.
Daniel White, prosecuting, said Wilson ran into the QPR goal area as the bad-tempered game was ending.
As Royce lent over to pick up a bottle off the pitch, Wilson jumped on his back and punched him on the neck leaving him with a lump and bruising.
QPR beat Stoke City 2-1 at the Britannia Stadium on 3 December.
Hamish Noble, defending, claimed Royce had provoked sections of the Stoke fans who had already become rowdy following the sending off of one of their players and the awarding of a controversial penalty to QPR.
He added that while Royce's provocation was "not an excuse, it was an explanation".
District Judge John Stobart, at Stoke-on-Trent Magistrates' Court, sentenced Wilson to 120 days for common assault and banned him from attending all league and international football matches for three years. _________________

| Coventry: Banned fan in fracas jailed - 10/01/2006
Source: Coventry Telegraph
A FOOTBALL hooligan from Coventry has been jailed after violence flared in a Brighton pub before the Sky Blues' weekend FA Cup game.
Bottles were thrown in the resort's King and Queen pub before Coventry City's FA Cup tie with Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
Sean O'Sullivan, of Walsgrave Road, Stoke, Coventry, was jailed for four months by magistrates in Brighton yesterday.
He had pleaded guilty to a public order offence and breaching a football banning order.
The 23-year-old was among a group who did not have tickets for the match at the Withdean Stadium.
They had been thrown out of one pub by police before arriving at the King and Queen.
Sussex Police said a minority then began to throw bottles at officers.
They also intimidated bar staff. Officers in riot gear, including helmets and shields, ejected them from the pub and after escorting them to Brighton station, put them on a train to Haywards Heath, where they had minibuses waiting.
Speaking after O'Sullivan was jailed, Chief Supt Jeremy Paine, of Sussex Police, said: "The actions of the small minority of people caused distress to many people who witnessed their behaviour.
"We will not tolerate it and I am gratified that this man has got the correct punishment."
* A man, aged 25, from Coventry, was arrested on suspicion of public order offences, possession of Class A drugs and breaching a banning order. He was bailed for six weeks pending further inquiries. _________________

| Ireland: Six sentenced after 'big two' clash - 17/01/2006
Source: http://www.4ni.co.uk
Six soccer fans have been given suspended jail sentences in Belfast
Magistrates Court today, relating to rioting which erupted at a Glentoran versus Linfield match last April.
Rival supporters stormed the pitch at the big two clash after Glentoran beat Linfield to lift the Irish League title.
The Judge, Mr Desmond Perry, described their behaviour as "appalling" and added that people should be able to attend football matches without the risk of being disturbed by violence.
The six defendants were convicted of riotous behaviour and sentenced to two months in prison, suspended for 18 months.
Mr Perry warned the men that any offence committed with in that period would result in imprisonment.
Some of the defendants surrendered to police after their photographs appeared in local newspapers and others were arrested after police were permitted through the courts to view TV footage taken at the match.
Mr Perry said the fans that had come forward should be given credit but nothing could excuse the sort of violence he had seen on a video recording of the trouble, which broke out after the match had ended.
Several others charged with the more serious offence of causing an affray will be dealt with at the Crown Court at a later date.

| Wrexham FC - Grismby Town - 01/01/2006Source: http://www.dailypost.co.uk/sport-news/wrexham-fc//tm_objectid=16541824&method=full&siteid=50142&headline=club-fury-at-yob-s-punch-on-keeper--name_page.html Club fury at yob's punch on keeperA fan is restrained by stewards after running on the pitch during the Wrexham versus Grimsby matc WREXHAM FC bosses yesterday blasted hooligans who invaded the Racecourse pitch and punched the Grimsby Town goalkeeper. Several yobs ran on to the pitch after the full time whistle blew on Saturday's controversial 2-1 defeat for the Dragons. Eyewitnesses said a punch was thrown by one youth which caught Grimsby keeper Steve Mildenhall on the ear. Stewards grabbed the young yobs and later handed them over to police officers. Last night police said there were no arrests following the fracas. Club bosses said they would not condone hooligan acts and insisted Wrexham fans were well behaved. Safety measures will be reviewed, and the hooligans, if traced, could be banned from Wrexham fixtures. And Welsh FA bosses, waiting for referee Darren Deadman's report on the game, may decide to fine Wrexham FC vital points. A Wrexham FC spokesman said yesterday: "Several youngsters were detained and handed over to the police. "Allegations have been made about what happened. We will have to wait and see what the police say before deciding what to do. "It was a police-free match. These days fans are well behaved and incidents like this are very rare. "We understand fans get frustrated and they voice their feelings, but that has to stay on the terraces. "We do not condone this type of behaviour." Wrexham's Red Passion fan website was also full of irate supporters who slammed the yobs' idiotic actions.. Grimsby Town manager Russell Slade was angered by the attack on his keeper. He said: "The attack was a very disturbing incident. "A fan has come over and Mildenhall has reacted professionally. "He's absolutely done nothing, just looked at the man, who's come and actually swung a punch and caught him on the side of the ear. "The safety of the players and management is paramount." Wrexham Supporters Trust spokesman Simon Johnson said: "This is the last thing we need for the club. We do not want this sort of behaviour here." | |
