UK police says will crack down on hooligans during Sunday’s FA Cup clash - 01/01/2010
Source : ANI
British police have warned both Manchester United and Leeds fans of a clamp down on offensive chanting during Sunday’s FA Cup clash.According to The Sun, Leeds are set to take 9,000 fans to Old Trafford for the third-round tie between the bitter rivals, who have not met for five years.Greater Manchester Police Superintendent John Graves said: “There’s a lot of pride and passion and both clubs have suffered loss and tragedy. It would be wrong for a small minority of idiots to use those as an opportunity to incite violence and disorder.”We’re not going to allow a small minority of idiots to spoil it for the vast majority. We have activity underway on our gateways, the borders into the county and motorway networks, to stop fans who may be coming to cause trouble.”

Police praise Leeds and United fans for 'impeccable' behaviour
The behaviour of rival football fans at the clash between Manchester United and Leeds was “impeccable” today, confounding predictions there would be widespread disorder, police said today.
The bitter rivals met for the first time in five years for the hotly-anticipated FA Cup third round tie at Old Trafford, and officers were braced for trouble.
But Greater Manchester Police said the “high risk” encounter passed relatively peacefully, with a “low number” of arrests.
Four men, aged 38, 41, 49 and 42, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit violent disorder at the Victoria Hotel pub, Withington.
A fifth man, aged 26, was arrested for a public order offence at the Sedge Lynn pub, Chorlton.
Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan, said: “The low number of arrests is testament to the excellent work of all those involved and a true reflection of the impeccable behaviour from both sets of fans.”
The police force mounted a huge security operation and had been preparing for the match for several weeks.
More than 8,000 Leeds fans descended on the city for the game, which saw Leeds knock out Manchester United in a surprise 1-0 victory.
The away fans were marched back to railway stations after the match by hundreds of officers in order to prevent trouble.
Superintendent John Graves, the match commander, had warned fans they would be arrested if they arrived at the stadium drunk.
He asked local pubs and off-licences to limit their sales and opening times, and advised coach operators of the dangers of transporting drunken fans.
Both clubs liaised with the Football Association and police forces in Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire in an attempt to stop trouble, he added.

Three-year ban for coin-throwing Wolves fan - 06/01/2010
Source : expressandstar.com
A Wolves fan who lobbed a coin towards rival Manchester City supporters has been banned from attending any football games for the next three years.
Richard Warner was spotted by match stewards hurling the missile during the Boxing Day game at Molineux which Wolves lost 3-0. The 33-year-old, who has no previous convictions, told Wolverhampton magistrates yesterday: “It was a really silly thing to do.”
A steward was on duty near the Jack Harris Stand, traditionally the home of the club’s more vocal support behind the goal, when he saw Warner take aim and hurl a small object at the away fans, said Maggie Meakin, prosecuting.
He was pointed out to police officers and arrested.
Warner said in his statement: “It was a bit daft. I threw a penny over their part”, meaning the away supporters in the lower tier of the Steve Bull Stand, said Mrs Meakin.
Defending himself at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court yesterday, he said: “I’m really sorry, it was a really silly thing to do. I’m not like that, it’s not something I would normally do.”
Warner, of Exhall Road, Keresley End, near Coventry, pleaded guilty to throwing a missile at opposing spectators at the December 28 game, an evening match that was broadcast live on Sky TV.
In addition to the banning order covering all football games in England and Wales until 2013, he was fined a total of £320.
Sentencing him, chairman of the bench Alan Leo, said: “Throwing a missile is an extremely dangerous thing to do. A three-year ban is the minimum period we can impose.”
Last January Aston Villa fan John Billington was handed a five-year banning order and a £2,300 fine when he admitted throwing a coin which struck a linesman on the head.
The 43-year-old managing director of an engineering firm, from Great Barr, threw a 50p piece during Villa’s 0-0 home draw against Portsmouth the previous October.

WEST HAM AND MILLWALL FACE FA FINES - 06/01/2010
Source : Daily Star
WEST Ham and Millwall will face the music today over the violence that marred their Carling Cup tie at Upton Park in August.
Both clubs go before the FA to defend themselves against charges which are likely to result in heavy fines.
The FA also have the power to close Upton Park if the Hammers are found guilty, although Starsport understands that action is unlikely. The East Londoners face four charges and Millwall three after troubled flared during West Ham’s 3-1 extra-time win.
Both clubs are accused of failing to take proper action to stop missile-throwing and violent, threatening and racist behaviour. One Millwall fan was stabbed outside the ground, while West Ham fans invaded the pitch three times during the match.
Police arrested 19 people on the night, while Hammers striker Carlton Cole and Millwall’s Jason Price both claim they were racially abused by fans. West Ham have since issued over 50 supporters with life bans.

Celtic - Rangers - 04/01/2010
Source : Glasgow Evening Times
In total, five people were arrested following yesterday’s 1-1 draw at Parkhead.
Strathclyde Police said four arrests were for alcohol-related offences and the other was for a sectarian breach of the peace.
The arrests came after a clampdown on Rangers and Celtic fans before, during and after the match, which saw police give warnings to hundreds of known offenders of domestic abuse.
Figures show the number of incidents rise by a factor of three after an Old Firm match.
An extra 750 officers were stationed across the west of Scotland for the match.
Almost 300 CCTV cameras, hand-held cameras, undercover officers and helicopter images relayed information to a police control room at Helen Street.
Potential problems that were thwarted included a planned march by around 500 Rangers fans to the ground by a route normally used by Celtic supporters.
A group of 60 fans was also intercepted by police in London Road after officers spotted four “risk” category thugs.

B92 will sue Partizan and Red Star - 06/01/2010
Source: Serbian media + IzaberiPartizan.com
The 2 biggest Serbian clubs, Partizan and Red Star, have issued a joint statement on 5th of January regarding the TV series "Insajder" aired on B92 television during December 2009 and after B92 TV Editor in Chief, Veran Matić, called all the sponsors not to support the 2 clubs if they do not distance them selves from fan violence and hate speech. The 2 clubs have stated they do not support any kind of violence, but that they can not be held responsible for behavior of individuals especially beyond the stadiums. Clubs have offered their help to the Government in fight against violence and have accused B92 for leading the ordered campaign against them and sport in general in purpose of destroying their reputation and lowering the clubs value, by dealing with hooliganism issues in way they did in "Insajder" series. They have accused B92 for misusing the national frequency and have said they will file a complaint to National Broadcasting Agency regarding this.
Reacting to the joint statement, B92 television has stated they will sue the 2 clubs for, as they say, false accusations for leading the ordered campaign against the Partizan, Red Star and sport in general. As it is said in B92 statement, by doing this, the managements of 2 clubs are just showing they are not yet prepared to distance them selves from hooliganism and that they are still defending individuals mentioned in "Insajder" series, accused by the prosecution for illegal possession of weapons, drug trafficking, extortion, hijacking etc.
Last week, Partizan basketball club coach, Duško Vujošević, was the first to say that B92 is leading the campaign against sport by calling for all sponsors to abandon the clubs which do not distance from fans hate speech (this is regarding the Grobari death threats towards B92 journalist Brankica Stanković). He said he doesn't support violence and hate speech, but that he too, as a public figure, was a subject of threats, and that the campaign against hooliganism has gone to far going into hysteria.
Partizan fans Grobari have expressed their opinion with this banner during the Euroleague basketball game against Lietuvos on 6th of January.

Juventus fans have reacted in disgust to their side's performance against Milan, creating havoc during and after the Bianconeri's 3-0 loss to the Rossoneri.
The supporters jeered on several occasions for coach Ciro Ferrara to bring on club icon Alessandro Del Piero, who was left on the bench until the hour mark.
A small fire inside the stadium was also lit towards the final minutes of the match, emphasising the way that the Bianconeri fans felt. Flares were also fired during the encounter.
After the match, there were also allegedly scuffles between the police outside of the stadium, and Juventus fans.

West Ham face FA sanctions over crowd violence - 13/01/2010
Source : Times Online
West Ham United face a heavy fine after they were found guilty of breaching FA rules after crowd violence at the Carling Cup tie at home to Millwall in August.
Millwall were cleared of all charges against them while an FA disciplinary panel found that charges against both clubs of failing to prevent racist behaviour by their supporters were "not proven".
West Ham will learn the nature and extent of their punishment on Friday after the FA's independent regulatory commission found them guilty of two charges: failure to ensure their supporters refrained from violent, threatening, obscene and provocative behaviour; and failure to ensure their supporters did not enter the field of play.
However, it is thought unlikely that the Barclays Premier League club will be forced to play a game or games behind closed doors.
It is understood that Millwall’s defence, which was conducted by Jim Sturman QC, was that circumstances at Upton Park had been beyond their control and that Millwall had exercised due diligence.
Andy Ambler, the Millwall chief executive, told the club's website that the decision vindicated their defence against the charges. "Millwall FC welcomes the verdict in respect of our club as we have always maintained that we were innocent of the charges," he said.
"This club condemns all misbehaviour within football stadia and works tirelessly to eradicate misconduct and to continue to change an unfair and distorted misconception of Millwall Football Club and its fans."
64 people were arrested as a result of disturbances before, during and after the match – both inside and outside the ground - a Millwall fan was stabbed and there were pitch invasions. There were also reports of racist chanting at the match, but charges against both clubs of failing to prevent racist behaviour by their supporters were found to be “not proven.”
The cup tie, between two rival clubs whose supporters are bitter rivals and include an element with a history of hooliganism, had been eagerly anticipated in some quarters and described on certain websites and message boards beforehand as a “World Cup final of hooliganism”.
Yet, as The Times revealed, Millwall had not been consulted about security arrangements for the game despite their experience and expertise in dealing with potentially disruptive elements.
Millwall had contacted West Ham to discuss arrangements on the morning after the draw had paired the London clubs, whose supporters have a long and bitter rivalry. Their suggestions included an early kick-off time and the closing of pubs near the ground, while they also made recommendations about ticket allocation.
However, they were informed that, in a break with a tradition established in advance of League meetings between the clubs, decisions were being dictated by the police and that Millwall would not be invited to meetings of the safety advisory group, a body that includes representatives of the local authority, the emergency services and the Football Licensing Authority.
This was a departure from recent practice, in which representatives of both clubs had attended meetings before league matches in the Championship at The Den and Upton Park. One of the decisions to which Millwall would have objected was the closing of Upton Park Underground station. According to Millwall, the stabbed fan — a retired fireman attending the match with nine family members — had got off a train three stations short of Upton Park and been misdirected into hostile territory.

Azzurri fans reportedly threw stones after Napoli's 3-0 loss to Juventus in the Coppa Italia...
The Stadio Olimpico in Turin has seen its second post-match protest this week, with Napoli fans, this time, allegedly being involved.
The Partenopei supporters were not pleased with the security around the ground, and started to throw stones at the stewards once the match between Napoli and Juventus was completed.
Five security personnel have been injured, according to Eurosport. Also found to be damaged were toilets inside the stadium.
The police are conducting an investigation into the incidents, and one man has already been arrested.
The first protest occurred during the Bianconeri's 3-0 loss to Milan on Sunday night in the league.

Juve stand closed for one match after racist chants - 15/01/2010
Source : ESPN
Juventus have been ordered to close a stand for next week's home Serie A match against AS Roma after some of their fans sang a racist chant in Wednesday's Italian Cup win over Napoli.
The 'Curva Sud' (south end stand) will be shut after fans occupying that area of Juve's stadium "directed a chant formed of expressions of racial discrimination at another team's player" in the 3-0 victory, the Italian Soccer League said in a statement on Friday.
A group of the Turin club's fans sang "there are no black Italians", a chant that cost them a stadium ban last season when directed at Inter Milan forward Mario Balotelli.
Balotelli, an Italy Under-21 forward of Ghanaian descent, is frequently the victim of abuse from fans of Juventus and other teams.
The league's sporting judge said he had taken account of the fact that the chant came from only one section of the ground and was not repeated.
He said Juventus's cooperation with the authorities to prevent such episodes taking place was also considered when deciding the punishment.
Italian media reported that if fans from the 'Curva Sud' buy tickets for the opposite end of Turin's Stadio Olimpico there is a risk they could clash violently with rival followers of the same team.
Racism is a major problem in Italian football and a number of clubs have been fined recently for offensive chants.
Juventus were fined 10,000 euros when their supporters sang the "no black Italians" chant at a game last month.

Colchester United - Norwich City - 16/01/2010
Source : Norwich Evening News
Through a ballot some 2,000 Norwich supporters snapped up the allocation of tickets for the travelling fans, but some yellow and green fans obtained tickets among the Colchester supporters.
A number of them were ejected from the stadium by stewards, while a Colchester supporter who ran onto the pitch and sped over towards the Norwich fans was rugby tackled by policemen and taken away.
A Colchester United spokesman said around a dozen Norwich fans were ejected from the home ends at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, but added on the whole fans had been well behaved in and around the ground.
With emotions running high police warned troublemakers they would face stern action. British Transport Police officers were on duty at Norwich, Ipswich and Colchester stations to ensure the safe and orderly movement of football fans.
But a spokesman for British Transport Police said that, as of 6.30pm on Saturday, there had been no arrests made.
With Ipswich Town at home to Coventry, Suffolk police also ensured there was a high visibility presence at Ipswich railway station, with the fans travelling back to Norfolk by train passing through there.

Norwich emphatically won the grudge match with Colchester 5-0, exacting revenge on their East Anglian rivals after the 7-1 opening day drubbing at Carrow Road.
Spice was added to the game because Canaries boss Paul Lambert swapped Essex for Norfolk just 10 days after that match, along with assistants Ian Culverhouse and Gary Karsa.
The move sparked a bitter compensation row between both clubs, which is set to end with a Football League tribunal later this season, and prompted angry Colchester chairman Robbie Cowling to refuse to increase the Canaries' ticket allocation for this weekend's clash.

West Ham fined £115,000 over violence against Millwall - 15/01/2009
The Football Association has fined West Ham £115,000 for failing to control their fans at Upton Park after violence at a Carling Cup tie against Millwall.
The Hammers, who have 14 days to appeal, were found guilty on two of four charges relating to the game last August and must also pay £5,000 costs.
Millwall were cleared of three charges while allegations both clubs failed to prevent racist behaviour were unproven.
A Millwall supporter was stabbed as fans clashed outside the ground.
Pitch invasions by West Ham fans followed each of their side's goals in the 3-1 extra-time win.
More than 50 people have been charged by police in connection with disorder inside and outside the ground.
The FA convened a disciplinary hearing where an independent three-man panel, chaired by a QC, considered evidence for three days last week.
West Ham were found to have failed to ensure their fans refrained from:
- Violent, threatening, obscene and provocative behaviour
- Entering the field of play
They were cleared of failing to ensure their fans refrained from:
- Racist behaviour
- Throwing missiles, harmful or dangerous objects on to the pitch
Millwall faced three of the four charges, as above except for entering the field of play, and all were not proven.
The Lions had complained about their ticket allocation being reduced before the match and vigorously defended the charges.
"We have always maintained that we were innocent of the charges," said Lions chief executive officer Andy Ambler.
"As ever this club condemns all misbehaviour within football stadia and works tirelessly to eradicate misconduct and to continue to change an unfair and distorted misconception of Millwall Football Club and its fans."
Police have said the 44-year-old Millwall supporter who was stabbed did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
Hundreds of supporters were thought to have turned up for the game without tickets.
It was the first time the east London rivals had played each other since April 2005.
Eyewitness reports suggested opposing fans threw bottles and bricks at each other and started small fires as police moved in to try to quell the disturbances outside the ground.
Police said they arrested supporters of both sides outside the ground.
Inside the stadium, police and stewards battled to remove fans who had invaded the pitch from the home sections of the crowd.
It is understood scores of seats in the visitors' section of the ground were damaged.
The FA would not comment on the commission's decision to find the charges against both clubs of failing to prevent racist behaviour by fans "unproven", although more may emerge when the full findings of the disciplinary hearing are published.
Both West Ham's England striker Carlton Cole and Millwall's Jason Price claimed they had been racially abused.

Greece: Hooligans meet for fight in Athens suburb - 11/01/2010
One man was arrested and several cars were damaged during what appears to have been a prearranged fight between some 150 Olympiakos and Panathinaikos supporters in a parking lot in Maroussi, northern Athens, late on Saturday.
Police said that about 100 Olympiakos fans left a volleyball match involving their team in the northern suburb of Kifissia after half an hour and headed on motorcycles to a municipal parking lot in Maroussi.
They were met there by a group of some 50 Panathinaikos fans. The supporters traded blows and threw various missiles at each other before police intervened. Officers collected 15 empty beer bottles and numerous rocks from the scene. There were no reports of injuries but eight cars were damaged.
A Panathinaikos fan was killed in March 2007 when the two teams’ supporters clashed just outside Athens.
