PSG chief issues warning to fans - 23/01/2010

Source : mirrorfootball.co.uk + Le Parisien newspaper

Paris St Germain president Robin Leproux has threatened to ban fans from travelling to away matches if they continue to run riot at other grounds.

PSG supporters have caused a number of problems of late and did so again last weekend when rival factions of the club's fans clashed with each other at Lille.

"If we have to give up organising away trips, it would be a terrible shock for football and also for democracy," Leproux said. "I hope it doesn't get to that point."

Next weekend's visit to Lyon could be the last for PSG's supporters with extra security measures being taken to do as much as possible to prevent incident.

For the first time tickets will only be sold at the Parc des Princes to individuals and will have their name printed on which will then be checked against their identity cards by police at Lyon.

Leproux added: "We are aware of the annoyance this will cause to the true supporters of the club," Leproux told Le Parisien. "But they'll have to put up with it to be sure of their security.

"We're stepping our security measures up a notch and that's displeasing."

With hundreds of supporters protesting furiously against the club's board outside the ground prior to kick-off, and the stadium almost half empty, it is clear all is not well at Fratton Park.

With Pompey fans having little to smile about on the pitch, two supporters invaded the field after 32 minutes. Midfielder Aaron Mokoena calmly apprehended the first fan, while Hermann Hreidarsson handed the second man over to stewards.

Yeovil Town FC - Exeter City FC - 23/01/2010

Source : avonandsomerset.police.uk

Police are warning football fans that football-related crime and disorder will not be tolerated following arrests and a pub closure before Yeovil Town FC's league match last weekend.

On Saturday 23 January Yeovil Town FC hosted Exeter City FC at Huish Park. Away supporters arrived in the town as early as 9.30am and were drinking heavily. With several hours before kick-off, police were out early with a strong presence on the streets to deter potential troublemakers. However, a number were intent on causing trouble and nine Exeter City supporters were arrested.

As a result, seven people have been charged with trying to enter a designated sporting venue while drunk and one person has been charged with trying to enter the pitch. Someone arrested for criminal damage has been released on police bail pending further enquiries. Police will be seeking football banning orders for all those arrested.

Police also used their powers to temporarily close the Railway Hotel in Henford for the day following intelligence about possible disorder at the premises.

Speaking about the arrests, Chief Inspector Paul Richards said: "We put robust plans in place for each football match to ensure that there is no disorder. This includes having a visible police presence on the streets and using intelligence to find out about and prevent planned violence. Our message to troublemakers is simple: we will not tolerate you committing crime in Yeovil no matter who you support.

"We work closely with Yeovil Town Football Club and share an ambition to kick trouble out of football. Fortunately most football fans are well behaved. However, we will relentlessly pursue the small minority who try and spoil the event for those who go to have a good time and hopefully enjoy a thrilling game of football."

Arrests after Manchester derby violence images issued - 26/01/2010

Source : BBC NEWS

Two men have been arrested after police released CCTV pictures of several fans wanted in connection with trouble that flared at the Manchester derby.

Fans of both clubs were believed to be behind the disorder before and during the Carling Cup semi-final last week.

Two men, aged 30 and 21, were arrested on Tuesday as a result of the appeal.

Police have spoken to Manchester United and Manchester City ahead of the return leg urging the clubs to ensure their players behave during the match.

There was a public spat between City striker Carlos Tevez and his former United team-mate Gary Neville after the game at Eastlands.

Police want to ensure that the players do not incite any trouble during the second leg at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Asst Ch Con Ian Hopkins said managers Sir Alex Ferguson and Roberto Mancini would be reminding their players of their responsibilities.

"We have met with the clubs - the FA had a representative there as well - who spelt out very clearly to the clubs what action would be taken if there is any player involvement in anything that goes wrong with the crowd.

"Both the managers will be speaking to the players; I understand the referee will speak to the captains before the game about that as well.

"So they're doing everything that they can to make sure it's a passionate and memorable derby."

Greater Manchester Police released the CCTV images of men they wanted to trace on Tuesday morning.

Officers said "a small number of so-called football fans" marred the otherwise enjoyable game.

Coins and seats were thrown by some supporters during the match, while police were also pelted with bottles.

"The people who caused the disorder are a disgrace to the vast majority of peaceful and genuine fans who simply wanted to enjoy the match," said Supt Craig Thompson.

"If you recognise the people pictured, please get in touch, we need to find those responsible so we can stop them from ruining matches for anyone else."

Manchester Manhunt For Footie 'Thugs'

Police have arrested two men after releasing pictures of people wanted in connection with trouble at last week's volatile Manchester cup derby.

It came as Greater Manchester Police issued a fresh warning to supporters and players to avoid disorder during the second leg of the Carling Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

Eighteen supporters were arrested at the first leg of the tie last Tuesday night after sporadic violence broke out.

Around 1,000 Manchester United fans turned up moments before kick-off and tried to force their way into the City of Manchester Stadium without tickets.

In the stands a flare was set off, missiles - including darts and golf balls - were seized and a police officer was injured.

There was confrontation on the pitch too, with cameras catching United defender Gary Neville apparently making a one-fingered gesture towards former teammate Carlos Tevez from the touchline.

He seemed to be responding after Tevez, who left United to join City in the summer, ostentatiously celebrated scoring both his side's goals in a 2-1 win over their bitter rivals.

The Argentinian has since branded Neville an "idiot" and a "boot-licker" in an interview.

Both clubs have been spoken to by GMP about their responsibilities to set an example on the pitch at Old Trafford.

Fans too will be closely watched and the force hope that releasing the images on the eve of the game will serve as a reminder that violence will always be robustly investigated.

Superintendent Craig Thompson said: "The people who caused the disorder are a disgrace to the vast majority of peaceful and genuine fans who simply wanted to enjoy the match.

"When we catch these people, and be assured we will, they could become subject to football banning orders, which in simple terms means they will banned from attending football matches.

"If you recognise the people pictured, please get in touch.

"We need to find those responsible so we can stop them from ruining matches for anyone else."

Assistant Chief Constable Ian Hopkins added: "While the people involved may think they have got away with it, we have spent the past few days reviewing evidence and we are working hard to catch those responsible.

"These people must be held accountable for their behaviour."

3,000 hooligans given World Cup ban - 26/01/2010

Source : The Press Association

More than 3,000 football hooligans will be banned from travelling to South Africa for the World Cup, the Government has confirmed.

Measures to stop troublemakers who are currently barred from watching matches from going to the tournament this summer will be passed in the Commons in the coming weeks, according to the Home Office.

The step will allow Home Secretary Alan Johnson to impose a "control period" on approximately 3,200 hooligans who are currently subject to banning orders.

Banning orders prevent hooligans from attending football matches in England and mean they have to surrender their passports to police before international football matches.

But in order to apply the sanction for the month-long duration of the World Cup, Mr Johnson has to lay a statutory instrument before Parliament, a Home Office spokesman said.

The powers are part of the process whereby officials try to prevent England fans from being able to cause trouble during international events, he added.

"Football banning orders have proved highly effective in preventing known risk fans from travelling overseas to football matches," the spokesman said.

"There has been no significant violence at any England match or tournament played overseas since 2000 when the current football disorder strategy was introduced along with very tough banning order legislation.

"The behaviour of English fans has improved dramatically in recent years and there is nothing to suggest that people will travel with the intention of causing problems. However, there is no complacency. Police will monitor all England fans on departure and intercept any known to pose a risk of violence or disorder."

Figures released by the Home Office last month revealed the number of football hooligans arrested by the police fell last season. There were 3,752 arrests at matches in England and Wales - a fall of 2% on the 2007/8 season.

Police prepare for Leeds fans' arrival - 26/01/2010

Source : swindonadvertiser.co.uk

EXTRA police officers are being drafted in to patrol Swindon Town’s match as 3,300 Leeds United fans are expected for the crucial League One game tonight.

Police have said they are not predicting trouble and are policing the game appropriately with 14,400 supporters packing into the County Ground for the 7.45pm kick-off.

PC James Neighbour, a football liaison officer for Swindon Police, said there would be an increased presence in and outside the stadium and throughout the town centre.

“There will be a lot more fans than normal and will be close to a sell-out,” said PC Neighbour.

“We don’t expect any issues and are working closely with our colleagues from West Yorkshire Police.

“Leeds are a big club with big support and we will police the game appropriately.

“There will be an increase in police with a visible presence.”

Police wouldn’t say how many officers will be called up for the match due to “operational” and “intelligence-based”reasons.

The option of horses was also something police aren’t ruling out at this stage.

A Swindon Town spokesman said this would be the Robins’ highest attended game since they played Brighton in the 2003/2004 play-offs.

“We would advise fans to allow plenty of time to get to the match early,” he said.

“It should be a cracking atmosphere with 14,400 fans.

“Leeds have taken their full allocation of 3,300 tickets.”

Leeds are currently joint top of League One along with Norwich City, while fifth-placed Swindon Town are hoping for a play-off position come May.

In March 2008 the Swindon Advertiser reported how police made five arrests during the Leeds fixture at the County Ground last season.

Three of the arrests were for public order offences. They involved two Yorkshiremen and one man from Chippenham.

A Leeds fan from Cardiff was arrested for trying to enter the ground with alcohol and a man from Swindon was detained for throwing an object on to the pitch.

Groups of fans were escorted to and from the town centre to the County Ground to avoid potential clashes.

Tout worries for Derby v Forest - 27/01/2010

Source : thisisnottingham.co.uk

FANS of Nottingham Forest and Derby County have been told they risk being banned from matches if found to have bought tickets for this weekend's clash from internet touts.

A Derbyshire police spokesperson said they, Notts police and both clubs had been made aware of supporters placing web adverts offering inflated prices for match tickets.

This has sparked fears fans won't be segregated properly.

Hundreds of officers from Notts and Derbyshire will be at the Coca Cola Championship league clash at Pride Park which kicks off at 1pm on Saturday.

Alan Bexon, safety officer at Nottingham Forest, said: "We are aware that there are advertisements being placed by individuals wanting to purchase tickets for our game against Derby County this weekend and are offering inflated prices.

"We remind our supporters who are fortunate enough to have received a ticket for this match that they are not transferable and that the details of each ticket have been recorded against the name of the person who has purchased it.

"Should their ticket be sold or passed on to anyone else, not only will the person in possession of the ticket face a ban from the football club, but it may result in the person who has purchased the ticket also being banned, which will also see them forfeiting their season ticket and membership."

When asked about the possible risk of fans not being segregated properly due to tickets being sold on, a Derbyshire police spokeswoman said: "We will make sure that policing is in place to deal with any issues that may arise."

Letters are also being sent by police to known banned hooligan fans of both teams, telling them to stay away from the ground or face arrest.

Superintendent Kul Mahay, of Derbyshire police, who is in charge of policing the match, said: "This is the one match that fans from both sides of the Brian Clough Way look for when the fixtures come out and we know it is a big deal for all concerned.

"The match will be a sell-out and because of the rivalry between the clubs and fans we expect a charged atmosphere but that isn't an excuse for violent or aggressive behaviour.

"We will have significant resources in place, both inside the ground and elsewhere, and we'll be working closely with Derby County, Nottinghamshire Police and our colleagues in the British Transport Police to ensure there are sufficient resources in place to deal with any disorder. My focus is to ensure that people see this as a successful day, whatever the result."

Thousands of Forest fans attending the game will find no alcohol on sale in the visitors section of Pride Park at half-time.

A special train with extra carriages is also being provided from Derby station to Nottingham at 3.21pm to take Reds fans back home after the game.

Increased resources from British Transport Police will be in place to guard trains and railway stations ensuring safety and minimising the disruption to genuine supporters and commuters.

Venues showing the match on television will also be contacted and reminded of their licensing obligations.

Police warn that any arrest, conviction or breach could result in club bans which will prevent individuals attending any future fixtures at Pride Park or the City Ground for a predetermined period.

Only eight fans were arrested following the match between the teams at the City Ground in August.

ELEVEN ARRESTED AFTER DERBY VIOLENCE - 27/01/2010

Source : sportinglife.com

Eleven suspected football hooligans have been arrested in connection with trouble at last week's Manchester derby, police said on Wednesday.

Officers detained the fans on suspicion of conspiracy to commit violent disorder in raids on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Trouble flared at last Tuesday's first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final between Manchester City and Manchester United at Eastlands. City won the game 2-1.

Police hope the arrests will deter fans from misbehaving at Wednesday night's return leg at Old Trafford.

Seven men, aged between 18 and 52, were arrested during raids across Greater Manchester, Preston, Lancashire and Bradford, West Yorkshire, on Wednesday.

Four other men, aged between 17 and 30, were arrested yesterday, Greater Manchester Police said.

One of the four handed himself in after spotting himself on a CCTV picture circulated by police.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Roters, of Grey Mare Lane CID, said: "Many families, including women and young children, attend football matches so it is totally incomprehensible that a small number of mindless thugs would incite violence when they are surrounded by people clearly terrified by their actions.

"Football related disorder is a stain on the game and we have been working hard with both clubs and members of the public to identify those involved.

"These arrests act as a strong warning ahead of the reverse leg this evening to anyone prepared to get involved in this type of behaviour that we will come after you."

Eighteen arrests were made last week after the match and appeals have been made by the police and the Football Association for calm ahead of Wednesday night's game.

Manchester United face FA inquiry after Craig Bellamy struck by coin

• Manchester City forward hit when retrieving ball for a corner
• Beer bottles among other missiles thrown at Welsh striker

Manchester United face a Football Association disciplinary inquiry after the Manchester City striker Craig Bellamy was struck on the back of the head by a coin and had several other missiles aimed at him.

Among the other objects hurled from a section of Manchester United supporters were three beer bottles containing liquid. They narrowly avoided striking him.

Bellamy was hit when he retrieved the ball for a corner early in the second half and the impact caused him to fall to the floor holding the back of his head.

The Manchester United goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar, picked up a bottle and appeared to call for restraint from the home fans in the area from where the missiles were thrown.

The referee, Howard Webb, asked for extra security to be brought to that part of the stadium. He was handed a coin by the City midfielder Gareth Barry.

United could be sanctioned by the FA for the behaviour of their fans, which came despite calls for calm in the build-up from the FA and Greater Manchester police.

A spokesperson for United said: "Our security thinks they [the perpetrators] were identified and arrested." They can expect to be banned from Old Trafford for life.

Manchester City's manager, Roberto Mancini, said he was too far away from the incident to see what happened.

Eleven fans were arrested tonight in the build-up to the Manchester derby. The men were arrested before the two Premier League teams met at Old Trafford in the second leg of the Carling Cup semi-final.

There was a large police presence at Manchester United's ground in an attempt to avoid a repeat of events at last week's first leg which resulted in appeals for the public to identify troublemakers.

So far 29 people have been arrested for alleged offences stemming from the first game, which City won 2-1.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "Officers policing tonight's Manchester derby have made 11 arrests. Eleven men have been arrested on suspicion of various offences including public order, affray and criminal damage."

Carling Cup : Man charged in Bellamy missiles probe - 28/01/2010

Source : AFP

A man suspected of throwing a coin which struck Craig Bellamy on the head during Manchester City's League Cup semi-final defeat by Manchester United has been charged with the offence, Manchester police said Thursday.

City striker Bellamy was struck on the back of the head by a coin, as well as having bottles and other missiles thrown at him, as he prepared to take a corner in Wednesday's second leg at Old Trafford.

The man charged, Adam Teese, 26, will appear in court on February 9 and will be banned from United for life if convicted, which could also lead to the club being sanctioned by the Football Association for failing to control their fans.

Police made a total of 11 arrests at Wednesday's match, which was largely trouble-free apart from the Bellamy incident. A total of 29 people had been arrested as a result of incidents during the first leg at the City of Manchester stadium last week.

Dundee United appeal to fans over missile - 29/01/2010

Source : sport.scotsman.com

DUNDEE United have appealed for fans to come forward and identify the person who threw a lighter at St Johnstone goalkeeper Graeme Smith during Wednesday's 3-3 draw.

The action was stopped to allow Smith, who is also believed to have been the target of a beer can, to hand the missile to referee Steve O'Reilly. One person was arrested after being picked out by his fellow fans, but United are keen to find the person who threw the second object.

Innocent United fan arrested by bungling police - 29/01/2010

Source : lep.co.uk

John Oakes was dreaming of a trip to Wembley when he had a rude awakening.
However, it wasn't from his alarm clock or his wife, but a visit from the boys in blue.

The 38-year-old was dragged from his bed by police at his home in Longridge at 5.20am and spent eight hours in the cells suspected of being involved in violence during Manchester City's 2-1 win over neighbours United in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi-final.

Greater Manchester Police released CCTV images of suspected soccer hooligans involved in the violence on Tuesday, one of whom looked like Mr Oakes.

But, he says, he wasn't even at the match, so was left stunned when police burst into his home in the early hours of Wednesday, as his terrified step-daughter slept in the next room.

Today, police admitted they had arrested the wrong man after the real suspect handed himself in.

Manchester United fan Mr Oakes said: "I was woken up by five or six police officers.

"They arrested me for violent disorder.

"One of the pictures that had been released of the people causing trouble at the match was supposed to be me.

"But I wasn't even there.

"All the neighbours were looking.

"People talk and it's not nice."

Mr Oakes, from Redwood Drive, was taken to Blackburn police station on Wednesday morning, spending four hours in the cells.

He was then brought back to his home while officers searched for evidence before being taken to a Manchester police station.

Mr Oakes, who lives with his wife, Lisa, and eight-year-old stepdaughter Emily, added: "When they brought me home my little girl had to see me in the van.

"She was crying her eyes out.

"I had to wait in the van while they searched my home.

"Then they took me to Manchester and I spent another four hours in the cells there."

Mr Oakes, who suffers from epilepsy, was eventually released 10 hours after his arrest and brought home by the police.

"The officers who arrested me were very nice, but they went about it in totally the wrong way.

"They didn't even apologise."

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "Intelligence was given to us that Mr Oakes was one of the people involved.

"But the real person handed themself in to police and Mr Oakes was released without charge."

Paris SG - 29/01/2010

Source : The Canadian Press

PSG is once again beset by mounting inner turmoil. The club's notorious hooligan element has started fighting again, and the fans are united against the club's chief backer, Colony Capital, which they say refuses to buy new players.

About 100 hardcore thugs from two different sections of PSG's stadium - the Kop of Boulogne section and the Auteuil section - clashed violently at Lille two weeks ago.

The feud is growing enough for the French league to consider whether to separate Boulogne and Auteuil supporters inside Lyon's stadium. This would make for the rare right of a club's away fans being segregated from each other, rather than just from the home fans.
