| Wales - England - 03/09/2005************************************************************* Match security operation pays off - 04/09/2005Source : BBC NEWS Police have confirmed that the massive security operation for the World Cup qualifier between Wales and England in Cardiff paid off.Just 18 arrests were made, largely for public order offences. Tens of thousands of football fans poured into the capital for the game, which England won 1-0. South Wales Police had warned hooligans they would be dealt with severely if there was any trouble after the match at the Millennium Stadium. Fans poured into Cardiff streets, pubs and clubs after England's victory thanks to a second-half deflected Joe Cole goal. Just after the final whistle, police said one or two "minor altercations" beforehand were dealt with quickly. There were 18 arrests for minor public order offences, but police said their operation was successful. England fans were warned beforehand that they would not be allowed into Welsh sections of the ground if they wearing English shirts. In the event, about 10 people were ejected from the ground during the game because they had bought tickets for the "wrong" end. Event commander Ch Supt Bob Evans said: "The vast majority of fans left peacefully after the game and I hope they enjoyed their time in Cardiff. "Unfortunately, there were a minority who were intent on causing problems for an hour or two after the game but we had more than enough officers to deal with whatever came our way. "Overall, I am absolutely delighted with the operation and the success of the day which I think it is testimony to the city as a whole." Ch Supt Evans was also pleased with the response to an England "fans' village" in Coopers' Field, close to the stadium. "It went down extremely well with the supporters and is something we will be looking to repeat in the future," he said. Medical teams Between Friday night and early on Sunday medical teams were based in the city centre for a speedy response to calls and to ease the pressure on hospital accident and emergency staff. A field hospital was in place in the stadium, staffed by doctors, paramedics and volunteers. The city centre ambulance responded to 26 calls, nine of them the result of an assault. In total, eight people were transferred to the University Hospital of Wales. Alun Harris of the Welsh Ambulance Service said the city centre presence meant medical care could be given as soon as possible. "By working this way we are also able to deploy valuable resources more efficiently to the greater community of Cardiff during periods of exceptional high demand." The police operation was bigger than those for the FA Cup finals that the Millennium Stadium has staged since 2001, with 400 officers backed by mounted police and dog handlers. Ch Supt Evans had warned before the game that the vast majority of fans were in Cardiff to enjoy the game, and police would "stamp very hard" on any troublemakers. ************************************************************* Wales v England, 18 arrests South Wales Police have reported a successful operation for the Wales v England football international in Cardiff with 18 arrests, mainly for public order offences. The police operation began on Friday evening and upto kick off time on Saturday afternoon there were no football-related arrests. There were one or two minor altercations in the city before kick off but these were dispersed quickly by officers and no arrests were made. There were around 10 people ejected from the ground during the match as they had purchased tickets for the ‘wrong’ end of the stadium. Event commander, Chief Superintendent Bob Evans, said: "The vast majority of fans left peacefully after the game and I hope they enjoyed their time in Cardiff. "Unfortunately, there were a minority who were intent on causing problems for an hour or two after the game but we had more than enough officers to deal with whatever came our way. "Overall, I am absolutely delighted with the operation and the success of the day which I think it is testimony to the city as a whole." Ch Supt Evans was particularly pleased with the success of the fans’ village which was provided at Coopers Field by the Football Association, South Wales Police and the local authority. "It went down extremely well with the supporters and is something we will be looking to repeat in the future," added Ch Supt Evans. "We have had six months to plan this event and by working with our partners, including the emergency services, the licensees and the local authority, I think everyone can be well satisfied. "There will continue to be a police presence in the city throughout Saturday night to ensure the safety of all those enjoying the city's bars and restaurants." Cardiff City lads _________________ | |

| Mbesuma needs police protection from angry mob - 01/09/2005
Source: Reuters
Zambia striker Collins Mbesuma was rescued by police after angry fans threatened him in a bar in his home town of Luanshya, Zambia's Post newspaper reported on Thursday.
Mbesuma, who signed for English Premier League club Portsmouth last month, returned to Zambia on Monday to play in Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Senegal in Chililabombwe.
The Post said Mbesuma had to seek refugee at the town's police station after being threatened by fans who accused him of drinking rather than training for the vital match.
Mbesuma was held by police in the afternoon to protect him from the angry mob before being escorted to the team's training camp on Wednesday evening, police sources said.
The Post quoted several fans who accused Mbesuma of turning up drunk to watch a local league match on Wednesday.
Mbesuma has scored six goals in Zambia's qualifying campaign and is crucial to the side's chances of beating Senegal and keeping alive their hopes of a first appearance at the World Cup finals.
Zambia lie second in African zone Group One, one point behind leaders Togo and one ahead of Senegal. _________________

| Zambian fans riot, beat up Senegalese nationals after losing football match - 04/09/2005
Source : AFP
Zambian football fans went on the rampage and staged riots on Saturday night after their team was beaten 1-0 by Senegal in a World Cup qualifying match.
The riots continued Sunday morning when irate fans beat up Senegalese nationals living in Zambia's copperbelt town of Kitwe and burnt down several shops and vehicles, an unnamed police official told AFP.
"We have managed to control the situation now. We have made some arrests," he said Sunday.
Kitwe, a mining town situated about 400 kilometres (250 miles) north of the capital, Lusaka, has a sizeable population of Senegalese who are mainly involved in small-scale mining.
The riots started in Chililabombwe, a small mining town where the match was played, but the looting spread further to other parts of the province.

Zambia soccer fans destroy mosque, cars after loss

Zambian soccer fans destroyed a mosque and burnt cars in violent riots late on Saturday following Zambia's loss in a world cup qualifier to Senegal, officials said on Sunday.
The soccer fans in the Copperbelt town of Kitwe, 400 km (249 miles) north of the capital Lusaka, burnt four vehicles and destroyed four houses in the aftermath of Saturday's 1-0 loss to Senegal in the nearby town of Chililabombwe.
Police inspector general Ephraim Mateyo confirmed the riots and said police would give details later.
"My commissioner of police is in the area and once I get a briefing, I will release the details," Mateyo told Reuters.
A police officer from Kitwe told Reuters that the fans rioted from Saturday evening until the early hours of Sunday. Their targets included a residential area where several Senegalese live.
"I saw four cars which were burnt and also four houses which were extensively damaged. The soccer fans were targeting property belonging to Senegalese nationals resident in Zambia," the policeman told Reuters by telephone.
"The fans also destroyed a mosque where the Senegalese go for their prayers ... it was an orgy of destruction, which police failed to contain," he said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties. _________________

| Slovakia - Germany - 03/04/2005Source : AFP Germany's Football Association (DFB) apologised again on Sunday after German fans fought police in Slovakia, raising further concerns over security with just nine months to go before the World Cup. Reports from Bratislava said around 500 German fans tried to force their way out of the stands following Germany's 2-0 defeat in a friendly international on Saturday. Six fans were hurt, one of them seriously, German media reported. The incidents followed a more serious outbreak in Slovenia in March when around 200 hooligans rampaged in Celje, smashing windows and damaging cars before and after the game and throwing flares on to the pitch during a match that Germany won 1-0. "That is unfortunate and deplorable. It shows Germany in a bad light," DFB co-president Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder said in Bratislava. "We can only be ashamed, and apologise." Hooliganism continues to be a major problem in German football, mainly in the lower leagues, but World Cup 2006 organisers continue to state they are confident that fan violence will not hit the tournament. "Our security forces will have (the hooligans) in their grasp in 2006," Franz Beckenbauer, president of the organising committee, told Bild newspaper on Sunday. _________________ | |

Afther the game RCM lads (with a group of about 40lads) attacked Eendracht Aalst lads (with a group of about 30 lads) in front of the stadium. Remarkably there was no police forces in sight so Racing lads attacked once but Eendracht lads stood their ground. Afther a few minutes police arrived and the action was over.
Eendracht Aalst supporters got on the coaches, and just before the coach left Mechelen, projectiles were trown from the bushes but police forces prevented another clash between the two sides. _________________

| KFC Verbroedering Geel - Royal Antwerp FC - 04/09/2005
Minor incidents after the game Geel-Antwerp. Antwerp fans (about 300 of the appr. 2000 visitors) tried to reach the homesupporters and succeeded. A lot of Geel fans who were just curious about what was happening caused chaos when the Antwerp group arrived. Those from Geel who were up for it (a small group, about 50 most of them 18-22) were separated as the "tourists" ran away as fast as they could. OB appeared, the Antwerp then fans started running back. Some Antwerp fans entered the gates. At that time Geel started to reorganize themselfs which was kind of bad luck for those who had the guts to enter the gates. They got some punches but were left alone when Geel saw that Antwerpfans were outnumbered. 15 arrests on Antwerpside were made.
Video: go to 19 min 45 s http://www.vtm.be/asx/vtmnieuws/vtmnieuws13uur_Ma.asx
The footage isn't realy correct, the running should be first, the punches after that...
Of course Geel hadn't had a chance if the topboys of Antwerp had joined the other Antwerpsupporters. Geel has only a young, small group die-hards. _________________

| Away fans tarnishing Germany's World Cup image - 05/09/2005Source : AFP With the 2006 World Cup just nine months away hosts Germany have anything but a clean-cut image after a section of unruly away supporters rioted in Saturday's 2-0 friendly defeat by Slovakia in Bratislava. The German Fooball Federation (DFB) admitted beforehand they feared trouble in the Slovakian capital and only 500 German fans made the trip. However, an estimated 150 supporters bought tickets at the stadium through improper channels and a section broke through barricades and confronted security personnel. A total of six people were injured - one seriously - with police arresting two German fans for their actions. "It is regrettable and casts Germany in a bad light," admitted DFB co-president Gerhard Mayer-Vofelder. "We are ashamed and can only apologise to the Slovakian people and their Football Federation. "The problem is away games in the former Eastern block states where tickets are sold outside the stadium to some idiots - they have nothing to do with football." The incidents in Bratislava mirrored Germany's last visit to Eastern Europe in March when they defeated Slovenia 1-0 in Celje. That 'friendly' match saw a total of 65 people - 45 Germans and 20 Slovenians - arrested with bricks thrown through shop windows, stadium seats ripped out and flares thrown on the pitch. "I do not know what type of people we are dealing with here," goalkeeper Oliver Kahn said at the time. "They are not football fans that is for sure." While the 2005 Confederations Cup witnessed true German fans getting behind their team the last three away friendlies have seen followers causing trouble with the local authorities. Riots in Celje, Slovenia in March were considered a one-off incident but then in mid-August 22 fans - the nationalities were not revealed - were arrested by police prior to the 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in Rotterdam. The recent events in Bratislava have added to Germany's concerns and Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger was one star to call for action to be taken. "We are World Cup hosts and represent Germany," said Schweinsteiger. "It is sad and I hope there are consequences." The DFB slogan for the World Cup is: 'We beat our opponents on the pitch not in the stands' and the World Cup organising committee (OK) insist security will be tight to ensure there is no repeat of events in Bratislava, Celje or Rotterdam. "The security procedures at an away match can not be compared with a tournament on home soil," declared OK vice-president Horst R. Schmidt. "Fortunately we do not have incidents such as that in Germany." German World Cup organisers will be on red alert to make sure this remains the case. _________________ | |

| 48 Zambians arrested after riot - 06/09/2005Source : BBC SPORT Zambian police say they have arrested 48 people in connection with the riots and burning of properties which followed Senegal's 1-0 victory in Chililabombwe on Saturday. The result ruined Zambia's dream of appearing in a first ever World Cup finals, and prompted Zambians to riot in the northern town of Kitwe. This was despite the fact that the Chipolopolo are guaranteed third spot in Group One and have thus qualified for next year's Nations Cup in Egypt. Police chief Ephraim Mateyo said in a statement on Monday that police have charged 14 football fans with arson while 34 others have been slapped with charges of causing malicious damage to property. He said the value of destroyed property had not yet been ascertained because most of the owners, the majority of whom are Senegalese nationals, were still in hiding. "All the 48 accused persons will appear in court soon," Mateyo said. "However, investigations into the matter are still going on." Police said over 800 irate fans rampaged in Kitwe, a mining town some 400 kilometres north of the capital Lusaka. Police said the fans beat up Senegalese nationals, stoned a mosque and smashed windscreens of vehicles that were suspected to have been owned by Senegalese. _________________ | |

Security beefed up in Belfast ahead of England clash
Source : AFP
Thousands of police officers were on the streets of Belfast ahead of the World Cup qualifier between hosts Northern Ireland and England.
The match takes place Wednesday against a backdrop of sporadic rioting in Protestant areas of the city.
Security has been beefed up around the 14,000-seat Windsor Park stadium, in a south Belfast Protestant stronghold, ahead of the 7:45 pm (1845 GMT) kick-off.
England last played in Belfast 18 years ago, when Irish National Liberation Army terrorists left a bomb close to Windsor Park.
Up to 1,200 England fans are expected at the match.
The England squad are holed up in the Culloden hotel in the plush southeast suburbs, with security forces close at hand.
Though unrelated to the football game, rioting broke out in the Protestant districts of northwest Belfast almost from the moment the England squad arrived in the city on Tuesday.
Youths bombarded the police with petrol bombs, stones and paint bombs. Rioters set fire to trucks and cars in the heart of the Protestant Woodvale area.
Police said nobody was injured in the clashes, linked to a feud between armed Protestant groups. Officers used water cannon to disperse the crowd.
Ken Eccles, the Police Service of Northern Ireland superintendent in charge of Wednesday's operation, said he was not anticipating any trouble at Wednesday's match.
"In Northern Ireland public order terms, this is not a huge set-piece operation," he said.
"But it's still a significant one and contingency plans are in place for any eventuality and should anything happen to unravel.
"Pockets of England fans were out and about the bars last night, and they were well behaved. It was a good atmosphere and we want that to continue." _________________

| Malta - Croatia - 07/09/2005Croatian fans charged after violent clashesSource : AFP Police said they had charged 103 Croatian football supporters following the violence which erupted after their team's 1-1 draw against Malta. The trouble started after Croatian defender Mario Tokic was sent off in the final minute of Wednesday's World Cup qualifier. The small police presence inside the national stadium were heavily outnumbered by the 500 visiting supporters and they only managed to restore order after a 45-minute battle when more officers were drafted in. Several Croatian fans ripped up seats and threw them into the VIP area, one of them hitting Malta's Minister for Communications, Censu Galea, who was taken to hospital for treatment. Fighting continued outside the stadium and around 70 people were treated in hospital including sixteen police officers. Maltese police said supporters identified as troublemakers were kept inside the stadium until everybody else had left, while the remaining fans who were not involved were escorted to the airport. A FIFA delegate visited the stadium on Thursday morning to assess the damage. Meanwhile, Croatia's Foreign Minister Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic talked over the phone to her Maltese counterpart Michael Frendo voicing her regret over the incident. "The Croatian side is ready to help relevant Maltese authorities in providing all necessary information in order to process the whole case in an appropriate way," a foreign ministry statement said. Croatian striker Ivan Klasnic said the behaviour of the fans rounded off a miserable night for his team whose draw against the group's bottom club saw them overtaken as Group Eight leaders by Sweden. "I am sad about the trouble caused by some fans," he said. "I think those who instigated it were drunk. It was a negative night in every respect." Thx to Gre _________________ | |

| Man banned from football grounds - 06/09/2005
Source : BBC NEWS
A Bristol man has been given a two-year ban from attending football grounds in England and Wales after police stopped him from leaving Bristol International.
The 34-year-old, from Staple Hill, was detained at the airport after officers suspected he was travelling to Belfast to watch England play Northern Ireland.
A force spokesman said it was part of a operation targeting those suspected of being involved with football violence.
He received the ban from magistrates in Weston-super-Mare on Tuesday.
'Relevant convictions'
The man was also told he would have to surrender his passport five days before England play any future matches abroad
The spokesman added: "People who have relevant convictions in connection to football violence or those who officers have intelligence to suspect are involved in such activity are liable to be detained while further enquiries are made.
"Avon and Somerset Constabulary is among a number of forces throughout the country committed to helping to eradicate problems at football grounds.
"We will continue to be vigilant and have spotters who can identify individuals we believe may be, or have been, involved in football-related violence.
"These people will be dealt with and run the risk of being served a banning order."
Police have a five-day control period when officers have the power to stop anyone they suspect may be travelling abroad to watch an England football match who may be involved in football-related disorder. _________________

At this time we're only about 10. Their group is composed by ex-RB and Ultras Auxerre. We're very surprised and a few punches are exchanged and finally visitors charged us and we ran back. We requested our other boys to help us but they came so slowly. So we came back to Auxerre fans with the aim to speak to have an off after the game. At the end of the game, we waited for 40 minutes but they did'nt come. Finally we were very disappointed but Auxerre lads made a good fair job. Well done. Breizh Stourmer _________________
