Almagro - Estudiantes - 15/10/2005

Source : SportingLife.com

A man has died following a fight between supporters of Estudiantes from Caseros and Almagro after a game in the B Nacional tournament.

The victim has been named as "Fatiga" and he was a supporter of Estudiantes.

The fracas started at Almagro's stadium gates after Almagro had beaten Atletico Rafaela 3-0 when the Estudiantes fans were on their way back to their coaches.

There has been a history of violence between the two sets of fans as the towns are only a few miles apart and there is intense rivalry.

Police arrested over 50 hooligans after the incident.

Fifa confident on World Cup security - 19/10/2005

Source : TeamTalk

Fifa's security chief is confident advanced anti-hooligan measures put in place since the last World Cup in Europe should make next year's finals in Germany relatively trouble-free.
The 1998 finals in France were marred by violence involving English fans in Marseille, and German hooligans who kicked a French gendarme to death, but since then several governments have taken a tougher line in preventing suspected troublemakers from travelling to tournaments.
In Britain for example, there are football banning orders currently in force against 3,113 people, meaning they will have to hand in their passports for the duration of the World Cup.
Walter Gagg, Fifa's director of stadia and security, says the security focus now is as much about preventing terrorism than hooliganism.
Gagg said: "We know that Germany will be totally different to Japan and Korea in 2002 - it has open borders with several countries which means we have to be more aware about hooliganism and other security threats.
"We are working very closely with several countries including England, Poland and Holland where there has been a problem with hooliganism in the past.
"We are confident that we are very close to having an excellent anti-hooligan organisation. We know the names of the hooligans and we have photographs of them."
With the USA and England both having qualified for next summer's finals, that has increased the possibility of the World Cup being targeted by terrorists.
Gagg added: "When it comes to security however we know that anything can happen.
"We have to be very careful. While we don't want to consider that every spectator is a potential terrorist - at the same time we are aware it could be a wonderful platform for terrorists."

Crystal Palace - Brighton & Hove Albion - 18/10/2005

Source : BBC NEWS + The Argus

Fans held after clashes in pubs
Two pubs in south London have been clearing up after football fans from Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace clashed ahead of a game.

Landlords in Whitehorse Road, near Selhurst Park, said hundreds of pounds worth of damage was caused.
John Kichenside, of the Palace-supporting Duke of Cambridge pub, claimed the trouble began when away fans were refused entry.
Police arrested 10 people before, during and after Tuesday's match.

Windows smashed

The rival fans threw chairs and other objects at the Duke of Cambridge and The Crescent Arms, forcing both pubs to close.
Mr Kichenside said the whole experience had been very frightening.
"We just did our best to block the doorway and when they realised that they weren't getting into the pub... they smashed the tables and chairs, they broke windows, they picked the sign up, ashtrays, anything they could get hold of," he said.
Crystal Palace FC have refused to comment on the events, but Brighton and Hove Albion FC said in a statement: "The vast majority of supporters behaved themselves, enjoyed the game and got behind the team - they were a credit to the club.
"If there were any so-called fans who misbehaved, then they were very much in the minority."

Albion fans in pre-match violence

Violence in the streets erupted hours before Brighton and Hove Albion went head to head with their oldest rivals.
Rival fans clashed in the run-up to last night's match between the Seagulls and Crystal Palace.
Up to 70 aggressive supporters from both sides smashed windows, trashed a pub and fought each other a couple of hours before kick-off at Palace's home ground Selhurst Park.
The trouble flared in Whitehorse Road and Holmesdale Road, near Selhurst train station. Bystanders said it was a mini-riot.
Landlords of two pubs caught in the cross-fire said they were shocked by the violence.
Eyewitness accounts said the trouble started when Albion fans drinking in the Crescent Arms in Whitehorse Road came into contact with Palace supporters at about 5.45pm, two hours before kick-off.
The Crescent Arms is a popular pub with home fans.
Licensee Ryan Arscott said: "We had a lot of trouble. Crystal Palace supporters rushed the pub and started to throw things at the windows. It was pandemonium for a good 20 minutes."
Across the street, eyewitnesses said windows at The Duke of Cambridge in Holmesdale Road were smashed by Albion supporters. They had been refused entry because the pub is advised by the police not to let in away fans.
Joint licensee Diane Ridley said: "There were about 20 of them. They weren't what I would call teenagers. They were 20, 25, 30."
Police broke up the trouble but no arrests were made.

RSC Anderlecht - FC Liverpool - 19/10/2005

Source : AFP

Dozens of Liverpool supporters detained in Brussels

Dozens of Liverpool supporters were detained in Brussels overnight as the English football club made its first return here since the Heysel disaster 20 years ago, security officials said.

Some 74 supporters were held and warned for trying to get into the ground of local side Anderlecht without tickets during their Champions League clash in the capital, the Belga news agency reported, citing the head of security.

Minor scuffles were also reported outside the ground, but there were no major reports of violence, with almost 350 police mobilised for the match.

"This will serve as a lesson to Chelsea supporters," said the official charged with security for the game, Philippe Boucar. Chelsea is also playing in Group G.

Officials also noted the warm atmosphere inside the stadium, with both groups of supporters applauding each other after the final whistle.

Thirty-nine people were killed during the final of this competition's predecessor on May 29, 1985, when Liverpool were playing Italian side Juventus.

Ascoli given two-match stadium ban for thrown firework - 19/10/2005

Source : AFP

Ascoli will have to play their next two home matches behind closed doors after a firework thrown by one of their supporters hit a woman at last weekend's Serie A game against Samporia.
The club, who were promoted to Italy's top division last season, were also fined 10,000 euros by the Italian football federation's disciplinary panel.
The missile, thrown by a teenage Ascoli fan, struck a 57-year-old woman in the face and she was taken to hospital with facial injuries.
The woman was in the enclosure housing Sampdoria supporters with her son and future daughter-in-law.
Ascoli will now have to face Udinese and Fiorentina without the support of their fans.

Grasshoppers Zurich - Middlesbrough - 20/10/2005

Source : Evening Gazette

Fans under siege

Riot police used tear gas and rubber bullets against a gang of Swiss football thugs as violence flared before Boro's UEFA Cup tie last night.
About 50 Swiss yobs attacked a group of Boro fans drinking at a bar next to the Hardturm Stadium in Zurich.
Police confirmed today that chairs and tables were thrown and baton guns, rubber bullets, CS Gas and tear gas were deployed.
No Boro fans were arrested or injured.
Supt Steve Swales of Cleveland Police, who was in Zurich for the game, stressed that Boro fans were in no way to blame for the violence about an hour before kick-off.
The Swiss yobs, understood to be from both Grasshoppers and FC Zurich clubs, closed in on the Boro fans who had made their way to a temporary bar near the ground.
Eyewitness fan Geoff Vickers said: "Around 50 to 60 Grasshopper youths took exception to us being on their patch.
"There was a bit of macho posturing and one or two punches thrown.
"The police in riot gear suddenly appeared.
"Then they let off three or four gas canisters in about ten minutes which dispersed them. It happened again ten minutes later.
"A couple of female fans were quite upset about it."
Supt Swales said: "The Swiss police responded by deploying baton guns and firing rubber bullets while they also deployed CS gas and tear gas.
"A water cannon was brought forward but it was not used.
"The people from Middlesbrough were very well behaved and in no way were they the cause of the confrontation."
Eric Paylor, the Gazette's chief sports writer, was inside the stadium when the incident, which is believed to have lasted for around 15 minutes, took place.
He said: "Those Grasshoppers fans who were already inside the stadium made a beeline for the exits.
"Eventually the sounds of police sirens could be heard, though at no time did the violence spill over into the stadium.
"However, around 1,000 fans in the home end were fully charged up throughout the game and never stopped chanting."
There were a number of objects, including a bottle-opener and a cigarette lighter, thrown at Boro goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.
The keeper handed the bottle-opener to Norwegian referee Espen Berntsen, who stopped the game to hand it to the fourth official.

*************************************************************
Superintendent Steve Swales, the Middlesbrough District Commander, led five Teesside police officers at the match who attended on an intelligence and spotting basis.
He said "98pc" of Boro fans behaved impeccably.
He said: "The major incident occurred in licensed premises near the football stadium before the match kicked off.
"The people from Middlesbrough were in fear of their safety when the incident started.
"Around 25 Middlesbrough fans were involved and between 30 and 40 known hooligans from Switzerland.
"Sadly there were further skirmishes after the main incident and some of our supporters did rise and react to the provocation."
He said that no fans from Middlesbrough were injured, though some did feel the effects of the tear gas.
Supt Swales said that "one or two of the risk supporters from Switzerland were taken into custody".
He added: "When you think there were 800 people here, 98pc of them behaved very impeccably.
"They were in good spirits and enjoyed the party they came for.
"It was just unfortunate that some of them were dragged into this situation."
Supt Swales will be filing reports on the incident on his return to Teesside today and further investigations are likely to take place.

Riot cops gas Boro fans

RIOT police were forced to use tear gas on rowdy football fans before Middlesbrough’s Uefa Cup match in Switzerland last night.

Officers also used baton rounds during a series of heated clashes.

But “99 per cent” of the travelling supporters showed restraint in the face of provocation by local hooligans, Superintendent Steve Swales said.

Around 800 Boro fans travelled to Zurich for the 1-0 win against Grasshoppers, which was marred by trouble before the game.

Mr Swales, district commander of Middlesbrough, said most of the away fans enjoyed the build-up to the match by relaxing in the city’s pavement cafes and mixing well with locals.

But around 25 Swiss hooligans tried to confront a larger group of English supporters, he said, until police intervened.

Just before the match, around 30-35 local thugs attacked Middlesbrough supporters drinking in a bar outside the stadium, and turned over chairs and tables.

No Middlesbrough fans were injured in the clash.

But a small group of “known-risk” Boro fans then sought out Swiss supporters and a brief fight took place, although no-one was arrested.

Mr Swales said: “There was increased tension before the game but the match passed off peacefully.

“Ninety-nine per cent of Middlesbrough supporters showed great restraint and caused no problems whatsoever.”

British quizz Anderlecht clampdown on Liverpool fans - 21/10/2005

Source : AFP

Home Office officials have asked Belgian police to explain why they imposed a five-mile exclusion zone around Anderlecht's Constant Vanden Stock Stadium which led to 74 Liverpool fans being detained before their Champions League match on Wednesday.
Chelsea play Anderlecht in Brussels on November 23, prompting worries of heavy-handed policing that might provoke a reaction from Chelsea fans.
The Liverpool supporters were all later released but the Football Intelligence Unit which monitors hooligan activity has called for less heavy-handed policing.
"We are seeking advice from the Belgian authorities with regard to the rationale behind the exclusion zone," the Home Office said in a statement. "We are interested to know the legal basis behind the tactics deployed."
Police in the Anderlecht district of Brussels said that laws introduced for the European Championship in 2000, which Belgium co-hosted, had been invoked in the arrest of the Liverpool fans.
"The football law, which has been in application for some time, dictates that a supporter who is not in possession of a valid ticket is committing an offence to be in the vicinity of the ground," said a spokesman.
And the Belgian authorities said they had no plans to relax their policing policy for Chelsea's visit.
"The football law is in place for all matches," added the spokesman for Brussels police.
There is a history of zero-tolerance policing towards English fans in Belgium. During the 2000 European Championship clashes between England fans, German and Turkish supporters and police in Brussels and Charleroi led to 584 Britons being arrested.
At the time Brussels' assistant commissioner of police Christian de Coninck described Belgian authorities as having been "too soft" on hooligans.
But Wednesday's clampdown has worried Chelsea fans.
"Chelsea supporters are worried that innocent fans will be mixed up in this and be deported," said David Johnstone of the Chelsea fanzine cfcuk.

Zurich Trouble Won't Affect Friendly - 21/10/2005

Source : SportingLife

The violence which erupted following Middlesbrough's UEFA Cup match in Zurich will have no bearing on England's friendly international against Argentina next month in Switzerland. Police fired rubber bullets to disperse Grasshoppers supporters who had targeted visiting fans after Boro won 1-0 in their group opener on Thursday night.
Middlesbrough's visiting fans were largely absolved of any blame, with a Swiss police spokesman on Friday morning indicating Zurich supporters had lived up to their undesirable reputation.
But it was stressed that Geneva, where England are due to face Argentina on November 12, is more placid, and it is understood the Football Association are not reviewing their decision to play the friendly on neutral ground.
The FA continue to be guided by the Swiss security forces, but their current position remains that the game goes ahead.
Since announcing the game, the FA have been in regular contact with Swiss officials, and barring any serious football violence in Geneva - 138 miles from Zurich - there seems little likelihood of England's match being threatened.
It is a fixture which has already caused a degree of concern in terms of security, after Switzerland were drawn to face Turkey in the first leg of their World Cup play-off in Berne on the same night.
Berne is located just 79 miles from Geneva, yet the Swiss authorities are confident they will be able to avert trouble involving supporters of the four teams.

Sparta Praha - Arsenal fc - 18/10/2005

Source : REÜTERS

Because of racist chanting during Sparta's Matchday 1 game against AFC Ajax, the Czech champions were ordered to close part of their stadium for the Gunners showdown. Some 6,300 Sparta fans were shut out of the ground, reducing the attendance to 12,528, and the Prague club was fined an additional €32,000.

Having initially lodged an appeal against the severity of the ruling, Sparta withdrew their protest when their fans transgressed again, during Matchday 2's game against FC Thun, in Switzerland. "UEFA bodies will be punishing Sparta again in the near future, for further disorder, so we didn't want to risk having the original punishment increased," explained Sparta business director Dušan Svoboda at the time of the decision. "That could have meant the closure of the whole stadium for the Arsenal game."

For the Arsenal game, UEFA's measures seem to have had an impact. Perhaps most significantly, the section of the ground known as the "kotel" (cauldron), where Sparta's hooligan element congregates, was closed for Tuesday's match, and there was no obvious barracking of Arsenal's black players. Also, as part of the Action Week organised by UEFA's partner Football Against racism in Europe (FARE), which, ironically, coincided with the Arsenal game, flyers were distributed reminding fans that racism had cost Sparta both money and support, and public-address announcements condemning racism were made before the game.

Racist abuse is not a new phenomenon at Sparta or in Czech football at large. In a society that, until recently, has been relatively isolated from multiculturalism, black players have often been the target of racial abuse, both in the domestic league and in European competition. Liberian star George Weah was abused by Sparta fans in 1995, while playing a UEFA Cup tie in Prague for AC Milan, and in 2001, UEFA punished the club when fans targeted FC Spartak Moskva's Brazilian striker Robson da Silva during a Champions League game. At the time, the fine of €35,000 was the largest ever levelled against a European club for racism.

Aware that the problem is not going to go away overnight, Sparta are now taking a bold and radical step, refusing their allocation of tickets for their next Champions League match. "Sparta have decided not to offer fans any tickets for the away game against Arsenal," confirmed club spokeswoman Lenka Raková, "and we are considering doing the same thing for the Ajax game in Amsterdam."

Sparta's new coach, Stanislav Griga, has joined condemnation of the fans' behaviour. "It's really very sad that things like this are happening in the 21st century," he said. "I find it very embarrassing. It's not real Sparta fans that do this, because real fans couldn't possibly want to damage the club. It's like scoring an own goal."

Goalkeeper Jaromír Blažek has added his disapproval - but the Czech international is somewhat pessimistic about the chances of keeping racism out of stadiums long-term. "I'm afraid that we might see these things continuing," he said.

Slovak police arrest 30 before World Cup tie

Slovak police arrested 30 Russia soccer fans following a clash with police in Slovakia's capital, the TASR news agency reported on Wednesday.

Hundreds of Russians arrived in Bratislava for their team's World Cup qualifying match against Slovakia on Wednesday. Russia need a win to finish second in Group Three behind Portugal and make it to the playoffs. TASR quoted a police spokesman as saying that at least five Russian fans were injured in the melee, some with stab wounds. Two Slovak citizens were also taken to hospital.

The clash between the fans and riot police units started in the city centre shortly before midnight on Tuesday, TASR said.

PSG fear clashes between own fans at Marseille

Paris Saint Germain officials fear rival groups of the club's supporters may clash in the visit to arch-rivals Olympique Marseille in a Ligue 1 match on Sunday.
Police arrested 85 people after fights erupted between two groups of PSG
supporters, the Tigris Mystics and the Boulogne Boys, before a home game against Nantes earlier this month.
"It was not the first time nor the last that there has been some fighting and there is a risk for Sunday," said Jean-Philippe d'Halivillee, the club's communications' manager, who is also responsible for dealing with the fans.
D'Halivillee has spent the last two days talking to both groups and travelled to Marseille on Friday to meet security officials there.
"We hope that the fans will come to support the club and not to fight but there's a real problem," he added.
At Parc des Princes, the Tigris Mystics and Boulogne Boys take their places in opposite sections of the stadium but at Marseille they will share the same part of the ground.
PSG chairman Pierre Blayau urged the fans to behave.
"The image of the club has to be respected," he said. "This is about watching football and having fun. We are doing our best to make sure everything will remain under control".

French government want to kick louts out of stadiums - 19/10/2005

Source : REÜTERS

French interior minister Nicolas Sarkozy wants soccer fans encouraging violence to be banned from stadiums.
"There are fans associations who call for violence against fans from other clubs, but also against other fans from their own club," Sarkozy told the National Assembly on Wednesday.
"I want these associations to be banned and broken up."
Earlier this month, police arrested 85 people after fights erupted between two groups of Paris St Germain supporters, the Tigris Mystics and the Boulogne Boys, before a home game against Nantes.
Sarkozy said he wanted the closed circuit television systems to be reinforced inside stadiums in order to use their footage as evidence against the troublemakers.
"Someone whose picture is taken while doing the Hitler salute is not a fan, he is a lout. He shall not be let into a stadium," he said.
"Our policy is very simple. We want to get rid of the louts in our stadiums. Our families should be able to come back in the soccer stadiums."

AS Roma - Lazio SS - 22/10/2005

Source : REÜTERS

Derby pressure high for struggling Roma

AS Roma go into Sunday's derby against Lazio with the pressure already beginning to mount after a poor start to their Serie A campaign.

Form favours Lazio, whose coach Delio Rossi is getting the most out of a side who few expected to go beyond mid-table but who are currently lying in fifth place.

Roma's defeat last week to 10-man Empoli leaves them in the bottom half of the table with just two wins from the opening seven matches of the campaign.

Coach Luciano Spalletti has avoided serious criticism so far but knows that a derby defeat may turn some fans against him, especially given the mood in the capital.

Roma fans protested at the club's training ground this week and there is frustration that Roma have fallen well below the standards set during Fabio Capello's reign which brought the 'scudetto' four years ago.

The much-documented dressing room troubles that plagued Roma last season have eased under Spalletti, who joined from Udinese in the close-season.

But the continuing bitter exchanges between management and contract rebel Antonio Cassano have robbed the coach of an attacking talent he badly needs.

Vincenzo Montella is expected to the lead line and the striker believes that early season form will count for little on Sunday.

"We still believe we can get up to fourth place this season, we have had some poor results but now is the moment to change direction," he said.

"They are doing better than us and are in better form but, even so, they are not as good as us."

As always there will be a heavy police presence at the Olympic stadium and, after violence in recent derbies, the match will provide an early test for Italy's new tough anti-hooliganism legislation.
