Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi announced he will ‘probably sign an order preventing Roma and Napoli fans attending away matches for two months’ after their shocking motorway brawl.

Those ugly clashes demanded a clampdown from the authorities and there were several meetings over the last few days between the Government, police, FIGC and Lega Serie A.

“This afternoon I will probably sign an order preventing Roma and Napoli fans from attending away matches for two months,” declared Minister of the Interior Piantedosi to La Repubblica.

“There will also be some other preventative measures” along with the Daspo for individuals – an order banning specific people from sporting events.

“I cannot help but consider a general order regarding the two sets of fans.”

The two sets of supporters have always had a bitter rivalry that too often has tipped over into violence, even resulting in the death of Napoli fan Ciro Esposito when shot by a Roma ultras leader before the Coppa Italia Final against Fiorentina in May 2014.

They are already banned from attending each other’s games because of that, but managed to meet at a motorway service station last week when Napoli fans were travelling to Genoa to face Sampdoria and Roma ultras were heading towards Milan.

The clashes spilled out into the A1 motorway, reportedly involving circa 300 fans, and caused traffic queues of over 8km as police struggled to get the situation under control.

Sussex Police intervene at Whitehawk FC vs Littlehampton Town match

A football club has condemned the actions of fans after a match was “marred” by “homophobic abuse”, “smoke bombs”, “smashed chairs” and pitch invasions.

A spokesman from Littlehampton Town said there were incidents involving both sets of supporters and described its “disappointment”.

Montpellier – Nantes game interrupted as fans throw flares

Montpellier’s match against Nantes this afternoon was momentarily interrupted in the first half amid fan unrest. Tensions were high at Stade de la Mosson as Montpellier, a normally reliable mid-table outfit, are this time embroiled in a relegation-battling season. In the last few days, the Hérault outfit suffered an embarassing defeat against Ligue 2 contenders Pau (1-2) in the Coupe de France and a humbling away at Nice (1-6). Nantes made it three losses in a row for MHSC.

During this Sunday’s home game against thirteenth-placed side Nantes, Montpellier’s most ardent fans group “La Butte Paillade” organised a strike movement during the first fifteen minutes. Then, they stormed the stands, throwing flares and firecrackers on the pitch. Referee Thomas Leonard had no choice but to interrupt the game, sending the players back to their dressing rooms. Fifteen minutes later, the game resumed.

Greece (basket-ball) : Nine Aris supporters received jail sentences - 13/01/2023

Nine Aris Salonika supporters were sentenced to 5 to 9 months in prison plus 3 years suspended for incidents that occurred during a match against Peristeri in November 2019.

The Salonika criminal court accused them of disturbing public order and possessing firecrackers and flares. On the other hand, the court acquitted them of the charges relating to the violations of the law on sports and the bodily harm inflicted on the police officers.

The defendants denied the charges, but were identified based on footage from security cameras around the venue. They appealed the decision and were released.
