Heavy police presence as hundreds of Napoli fans cross city ahead of Liverpool Champions League clash
Hundreds of Napoli fans have been seen singing and waving flags across Liverpool before being escorted to Anfield.
The Italian club will face off against Liverpool at 8pm on Wednesday evening in the fifth game of the group stage in the Champions League .
Ahead of the match, hundreds of supporters travelled into Liverpool to meet up before making their way to the stadium .
Pictures taken in Williamson Square and on Mathew Street, in Liverpool city centre, showed groups of fans gathered together with a heavy police presence close behind.
Supporters were heard singing songs in Italian and waving club flags before being herded by police and directed towards St George's Hall.
A police source told the ECHO that fans would be put on buses near Queen Square bus station but officers were waiting on around 200 more arriving on trains at Lime Street.
Rumours circulated on social media suggested that Napoli fans were seen with golf clubs and other weapons in the city centre.
Merseyside Police have confirmed this is not true after confiscating a number of flag poles.
A spokesperson for the force said on Twitter: "Merseyside Police is aware of social media posts saying Napoli fans are armed with golf clubs in the city centre.
"Officers have responded and confiscated a number of flags attached to flag poles. No golf clubs have been found."

Violent scuffles in Amsterdam as Rangers fans gather ahead of Feyenoord clash
Violent scuffles broke out in the centre of Amsterdam last night ahead of Rangers' Europa League clash with Feyenoord.
Thousands of Gers supporters have travelled to the Dutch capital despite just 3,000 tickets being made available for travelling fans at De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam. There have been reports of Rangers fans snapping up tickets in the home end, fuelling fears of hooligan attacks.
Feyenoord have a notorious hooligan element amongst their support and earlier this week were barred from selling tickets to fans for next month's Europa League trip to Porto.
The ban was enforced after disturbances during another European tie in Switzerland against Young Boys.
Police in Amsterdam are braced for around 10,000 travelling fans descending on the city and congregating in Dam Square, which is where scuffles broke out last night.
Video footage circulated on social media appeared to show one man being struck in the face by a drink outside a bar, with several people wading into the scrap which carried on in the street.
Things calmed down when several cops arrived to break up the skirmish.
At the match between Rangers and Feyenoord at Ibrox, Dutch fans lit pyrotechnics and forced the game to be temporarily halted while others, including one wearing a Celtic shirt, clashed with cops at the ground.

Rangers fans attacked in Rotterdam hotel by Feyenoord fans launching chairs and trashing bar
Rangers fans came under attack from rival fans following the Ibrox side's Europa League clash against Feyenoord in Rotterdam, Holland on Thursday night.
Fans enjoying a drink at the cocktail bar in the Rotterdam Hilton were accosted by passing Feyenoord fans who began throwing chairs at the bar's glass windows and doors from the street.
Footage shows fans being hit with chairs as the bar's elegant seating area is trashed around 11.30pm.
The Rangers fans can be seen going to the doors to confront the rampaging Feyenoord fans who continue shouting and hurling chairs.
One witness told the Record: "We were just sitting having a drink in the bar at the front of the hotel when we were attacked.
"It's a cocktail bar and there were a lot of Rangers fans here."
The fans attacked just hours after the tie between Rangers and Feyenoord ended in a 2 - 2 draw.
Dutch media is reporting that 42 arrests were made near Feyenoord's stadium De Kuip in Rotterdam earlier on Thursday evening but offences do not appear to have been serious in nature.
Dutch media are reporting that six people were arrested for not complying with an order, five for lighting fireworks, two for insulting, one for wanton behavior, one for public intoxication, two for selling things illegally, and one for "other."
Only one of the people arrested, for intoxication, has been confirmed as Scottish by news sources in Holland.

Eintracht Frankfurt fans cause chaos ahead of Arsenal clash as Police escort supporters
Arsenal take on Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League tonight, and fans of the German side have reportedly been causing chaos in the streets of North London, with police having to escort supporters.
Hundreds of Eintracht Frankfurt fans have turned up in London ahead of their Europa League clash with Arsenal tonight. But, supporters of the Bundesliga side were banned from attending the fixture, due to crowd trouble in an earlier European fixture.
They’ve reportedly blocked the road, and police have had to escort them away from the area.
Arsenal security staff and police are currently containing the fans before kick-off.
Members of the public close to the action have claimed that police are trying to move the Frankfurt fans south on Holloway Road, after they blocked the road.
Outside the Emirates Stadium, large groups of fans have been “penned in” by police on all sides, according to the Islington Gazette.
Police are expected to reject Eintracht Frankfurt fans from entering the Emirates Stadium.
The club also refused to put tickets on general sale, and temporarily shut down their resale website.
They’re officially banned from attending the Europa League fixture, after crowd trouble against Vitoria last month.
Fans engaged in fights with Portuguese police in the stands, while Ultras ripped up seats and used them as missiles.
Eintracht Frankfurt fans were also banned from attending the Europa League clash against Standard Liege earlier this month.

France : 4 PSG fans taken into police custody for attacking bystanders at Jul concert - 28/11/2019
Source : https://www.getfootballnewsfrance.com/
L’Équipe report that 4 PSG fans have been taken into police custody for attacking bystanders at a recent Jul concert in Paris.
Jul is one of France’s biggest rappers, but is a known Marseille fan. His concert on the 13th November at the AccorHotels Arena made members of Collectif Ultras Paris (CUP) angry and feel the need to take action.
These ultras were largely hooded and broke into the concert hall before intimidating innocent bystanders, firing smoke cannons and bringing in firecrackers, deploying anti-Marseille banners and instigating fights.
Four individuals were identified by videos put on social media and then taken into police custody. They had a court hearing this afternoon and were released thereafter.
Investigations continue into this specific matter.

Wolves fans attacked by hooligans in second night of Porto violence
The travelling supporters were involved in several clashes after being targeted by hooligans believed to be supporters of Belgian club Standard Liege.
Fans in Portugal told the Express & Star how running battles broke out across the city as British fans were specifically sought out by Belgian supporters, with one man seen lying on the floor surrounded by blood.
Thousands of Wolves fans have been arriving in Porto over the last few days ahead of the team's match in Braga tonight.
Meanwhile Standard Liege supporters have been travelling through Porto on the way to Guimaraes, where they are playing Vitoria SC on Thursday evening.
Videos shared on social media showed chairs being thrown and Wolves fans involved in street confrontations with groups of men dressed all in black.
Dave Timmins, from Sedgley, said: "We couldn't get away from it, to be honest. Every bar we went to, something happened - waiting for us outside.
"They were everywhere, chucking things at the pub and trying to charge into the pub. We saw one Wolves fan who we think got stabbed. He was laying on the floor with blood everywhere."
Craig Melia, from Dudley, added: "Police seemed to have it in hand, generally, apart from a few alterations.
"We got in on Wednesday teatime and seemed to follow it just after the incidents had occure - running battles, to be fair."
One video showed a small group of men, believed to be Wolves fans, standing off against a much larger group who were believed to be Belgians.
Chairs, poles and other missiles were thrown as the two groups faced off in Filipa de Lencastre Square in the city centre.
The video started as chairs were thrown outside the FE Wine & Club bar before showing a running fight up the hill towards the Infante Sagres hotel.
Further footage, filmed just 200 metres away from the FE Wine & Club, showed a man being kicked and beaten by a group of around 15 men outside the Adega Sports Bar on Rua de Jose Falcao.
Other clips were shared of clashes on streets down the hill closer to the Douro River.
Lifelong supporter Steve Plant was among those caught up in the trouble and filmed footage of Portugese police dispersing a crowd in the city centre.
He said the video was taken as the police confronted Belgian supporters who had just attacked well-behaved Wolves fans, near where families and children had been enjoying the atmosphere.
Mr Plant said police used rubber bullets to break up the disturbance and described the Standard Liege fans as a "proper organised group".
Meanwhile on Tuesday evening Wolves fans were reportedly charged at by a similar black-clad group of hooligans, with one fan left with a fractured cheek bone, fractured eye socket and a broken nose.
The number of arrests is not yet known.

Celtic Glasgow - Rennes - 28/11/2019
Source : https://www.getfootballnewsfrance.com/
PSG ultras travelled to Glasgow to attack Rennes fans
L’Équipe report that Ligue 1 champions PSG’s ultras travelled to Glasgow today to attack Rennes fans who this evening faced Celtic in a Europa League clash.
No serious injuries were sustained as the 2,500 person-strong SRFC contingent was attacked by other French fans who identify with Les Parisiens. It appears that the PSG ultras decided to travel to Scotland to attack the Brittany club’s fans because of the loss they sustained to Rennes in last season’s Coupe de France final.
The incidents occurred at the beginning of the evening, when around 20 people, later identified by police as PSG ultras, attacked Rennes fans in the city centre and stones and projectiles were thrown.
Police were pre-warned that hooligans might try to cause trouble. The local authorities were very organised and quickly dispersed the troublemakers – nobody was obviously injured.
