Sunderland fans call for visitors to be moved at Stadium of Light after Portsmouth supporter arrested for throwing flare
Sunderland fans have called again for away supporters to be relocated in the Stadium of Light after yesterday's game against promotion rivals Portsmouth was marred by a flare-throwing incident.
Play was stopped for several minutes in the first half while police and stewards dealt with the incident, after the flare was thrown from the upper tier of the North Stand into home supporters below.
Northumbria Police said the suspected offender was quickly arrested and detained. It is not yet known whether he faces any charges.
The incident follows similar trouble at the previous home game v Coventry City on Saturday, April 13.
On that occasion, home supporters complained that they had coins, bottles and flares thrown at them by visiting supporters in the section above their seats in the same area.

Three Norwich City fans arrested for pitch encroachment following Premier League promotion
Three Norwich City fans remain in police custody after invading the pitch after the club’s promotion to the Premier League.
But police have praised the behaviour of fans celebrating the club's achievement following the game.
Ahead of the final whistle, Norwich City fans were urged to remain in their seats and warned that supporters would risk police action should they encroach on the pitch.
All but three supporters heeded the advice, instead soaking up the atmosphere from the stands.
However, the three that did rush onto the field were arrested by Norfolk Constabulary and remain in custody.
Duty inspector John Colbert said: “People were naturally in very high spirits after the game but there were no significant issues.”
Another officer wrote on Twitter: “A big thank you to Norwich and Blackburn fans for really good natured support.”

Germany : Police investigate Sancho incident amid fan trouble in Dortmund - 28/04/2019
Source : https://www.thelocal.de/
German police are investigating an incident in which England international Jadon Sancho was struck by what appeared to be a cigarette lighter thrown from the away block during Borussia Dortmund's 4-2 defeat to local rivals Schalke on Saturday.
A number of arrests were made amid trouble from both sets of fans, during a tense day on which Schalke dealt a severe blow to their rivals' Bundesliga title bid.
TV footage showed Sancho, 19, being hit by a projectile as he celebrated Dortmund's opening goal with teammates just in front of the Schalke fan section. He was briefly taken off the pitch for treatment, but returned to play the rest of the game.
In a statement on Saturday, police said they had opened criminal proceedings on the basis of aggravated battery.
The Ruhr derby is generally subjected to a high level of security, with hundreds of police officers deployed to keep opposing fan groups separated both at the game and on their way to and from the stadium.

Saturday's game in Dortmund was nonetheless overshadowed by a handful of ugly incidents, involving what police called an "unteachable and violent minority" of fans.
Before the game, a group of Schalke fans attempted to storm the turnstiles, leading to delays in security checks. At full time a group of Dortmund fans attempted to break their way into the away block, but were beaten back by officers. The police also confirmed the use of pepper spray in a confrontation at a local metro station.
In total, police confirmed they had taken 13 people into custody and filed charges against 36 people, both for assault and breaches of the Explosives Act.
The police statement said that the use of flares in the home block towards the end of the game had left six people injured, two of which were hospitalised. Schalke fans also set off flares at kick-off, unleashing a cloud of blue smoke across the field.
They later held up a tasteless banner demanding the release of Sergei Wenergold, the man who was jailed for attempted murder after a bomb attack on the Dortmund team bus in 2017.
Former Dortmund player Marc Bartra, who was injured in the 2017 attack, condemned the banner on Twitter, saying that it was "unacceptable" and "sad".
"Rivalry in football is one thing, it is quite another to demand freedom for someone who played with the lives of 28 people," wrote the Spanish defender, who now plays in Seville for Real Betis.

Met Police on high alert as Ajax fans descend on London for Champions League clash with Tottenham
London Metropolitan Police are on high alert for Tuesday's Champions League semi-final between Tottenham and Ajax after a spate of violence involving Dutch supporters during recent European games.
Uniformed police officers are set to be stationed inside Tottenham's new stadium, in addition to the usual stewarding procedure, after the force raised the risk level of the fixture to a Category C fixture.
A section of Ajax's support have a reputation for causing trouble. There were clashes with Italian Juventus fans before the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final in Amsterdam and busloads of Ajax fans were raided by police on the eve of the second leg in Turin.
Italian authorities upended 54 weapon-carrying 'ultras' and escorted them out of the country. Ajax fans were found in possession of knuckle-dusters, mouth guards and pyrotechnics.
Thorough checks will be made on supporters entering the stadium, while the police will also be wary of any hotspots in the capital after the trouble that played out in Amsterdam when England fans travelled to Holland for a friendly match last year.
A police statement read: 'Police will be deployed both in and outside the grounds of Tottenham Hotspur Football Stadium for the Tottenham Hotspur vs Ajax Champions League football match on Tuesday, 30 April.
'A proportionate policing plan is in place to ensure any instances of crime or disorder is responded to quickly and robustly.
'We are working with Tottenham FC and supporter groups to ensure fans attend a safe and enjoyable match and would urge anyone who witnesses any form of criminality or suspicious behaviour bring it to the attention of a police officer.
'The match has been deemed a Category C game which stands for high risk.'
