Killing of German man by alleged 'foreigner' sparks two days of far-right and hooligans riots - 27/08/2018
Source : https://www.i24news.tv/
An East German town has been rocked by two days of far-right and hooligans riots following the killing of a German man, allegedly by a "foreigner". The far-right movement PEGIDA called Monday for a second consecutive day of protests after a brawl on the streets of Chemnitz, in the State of Saxony, left one German national dead. The protests on Sunday quickly turned violent and included attacks on foreigners, forcing police to call in reinforcements. The fatal altercation which sparked the protests took place in the early hours of Sunday outside a street festival. According to the police, it involved 10 people of “various nationalities.” One 35-year-old man was killed while two others, ages 33 and 38, were stabbed and sustained serious injuries. Two suspects were arrested.Unconfirmed reports, denied by Saxon police, suggested that the fight began after a woman was harassed and the deceased came to her aid. On Twitter, police relentlessly urged people to stop spreading rumors and fought off allegations that information regarding the incident was being withheld for political reasons.“Just a moment, I need to call Mrs. Merkel to find out what I can say,” the police’s social media team tweeted cynically.
On Sunday afternoon, an 800-strong crowd gathered outside the festival, forcing it to close early. They hurled bottles at the police, and several people reported being assaulted, among them, a man of Syrian origin.A spokesperson for Chancellor Angela Merkel said Monday the German government condemns the events in Chemnitz "in the strongest terms" and condemned far-right protesters for seeking to "hunt down" foreigners. "Such riots, pursuits of people of different appearance and other origins, or the attempt to spread hatred on the streets, we do not accept," said spokesperson Steffen Seibert in his weekly press conference in Berlin."Vigilantism has no place in our constitutional state," he stressed, referring to AfD lawmaker Markus Frohnmaier's comment on Twitter that "if the state can no longer protect the citizen, then people will go on the streets and protect themselves."
The rioters ignored police instructions and confronted passersby of foreign appearance. They chanted “foreigners out”, “we are the people” and “this is our city.” Unprepared for the spontaneous rally, Chemnitz police was forced to call in reinforcements from neighboring cities Leipzig and Dresden. On Monday, PEGIDA’s regional chapter leader for Chemnitz and West Saxony called for renewed protests beginning 6:30 PM local time. “Muster strength from anger and sadness ! Only together can we ensure that his death was not in vain,” he wrote on Facebook.Saxony’s AfD chapter, as well as other right-wing sites, also called for demonstrations in the early evening. To counter their message, a left-wing alliance plans to protest “against right-wing agitation and instrumentalization.” “When the state can no longer protect citizens, people take to the streets to protect themselves. Simple as that!” tweeted Markus Frohnmaier, a member of the German parliament for the AfD. “Today, it is civic duty to stop the deadly 'knife migration'! It could affect your father, son or brother!”Chemnitz Mayor Barbara Ludwig, on the other hand, called the protesters’ behavior horrifying. “The fact that it is possible for people to organize themselves, gather, force the cancellation of a city festival and then run through the city and threaten people – that is bad,” she told public broadcaster MDR.Saxony state has become a hotspot for racist hate crimes and anger at the arrival of more than a million asylum seekers since 2015.

Heated clashes between football fans and police in Zurich - 25/08/2018
Source : https://www.thelocal.ch/
A week after authorities in Zurich called for police to be equipped with bodycams, there were a number of violent clashes between officers and football fans.
On Sunday afternoon, police reportedly employed tear gas and rubber bullets after around 20 to 25 fans of Switzerland’s FC Basel football club tried to attack passers-by at Zurich’s Altstetten train station in the wake of a match between FC Basel and FC Zurich.
The FC Basel fans then boarded a train to the northern city but after 100 metres the emergency brake was pulled with a number of fans trying to leave the train and stir up more trouble. Police then used tear gas a second time, Swiss news portal 20 Minuten wrote in an unconfirmed report.
Also this weekend, early on Saturday morning police were threatened and objects hurled at them as they tried to intervene in a violent clash between two groups. Those attacking the police were wearing FC Zurich fan gear, police said.
Officers had to withdraw and call for backup as they dealt with an incident in which two people were seriously injured, Swiss daily NZZ reported.
Meanwhile, later on Saturday police were called in to deal with a clash between two suspected groups of football hooligans in Zurich’s Kreis 5 district. Four people were arrested. During the arrests, however, officers were attacked. Rubber bullets were employed in the incident and one officer was injured.
This weekend’s incidents came just days after Zurich authorities called for police to be equipped with body worn videos (BMVs). That call came after a group of some 200 to 300 masked individuals wearing FC Zürich football club fan gear attacked police and medics near the city’s opera house.
Zurich City Hall and the cantonal parliament must now approve any move that would allow the city's force to become the first in Switzerland to wear the controversial body cameras.

Santos FC (Brazil) - Independiente (Argentina) - Copa Libertadores - 28/08/2018

Santos-Independiente Copa Libertadores match abandoned after fan disturbance
Santos fans threw fireworks at the Independiente bench and tried to invade the field during Tuesday's Copa Libertadores match, forcing the referee to abandon the game with just minutes remaining in a 0-0 draw.
The result means that Independiente, who earlier in the day were awarded a 3-0 first-leg win after Santos were adjudged to have used an ineligible player, qualified for the quarterfinals of South America's premier club competition.
Tuesday's game at the Pacaembu stadium was drifting toward a stalemate when Santos fans began throwing missiles toward the Independiente bench and onto the pitch with some eight minutes remaining.
Scores of fans then stormed the perimeter fence, prompting police to beat them back with batons.
A few managed to scale the barriers and get onto the pitch as police and supporters clashed at the bottom of the terraces. Police then launched percussion grenades to quell the violence.
The Chilean referee halted the game and a few minutes later took the teams to the dressing rooms and abandoned the match.
The trouble came at the end of a tumultuous day for the South American Football Confederation CONMEBOL.

Far-right & hooligans, anti-fascists clash in east German town of Chemnitz - 28/08/2018
Source : https://fr.news.yahoo.com/
Far-right activists have clashed with anti-facists in the eastern German town of Chemnitz following the murder of a German national of Cuban origin over the weekend.
A man, identified as Daniel H by local media, was stabbed during an argument on Saturday. Two men, of Syrian and Iraqi origin, have been arrested by the police.
On Sunday, around 800 far-right activists rallied on the streets to protest the stabbing. But those who knew Daniel have accused the far-right of exploiting his death for their own benefit.
"I think it's horrible what's happening here in Chemnitz, and I hope that they know who they're doing this march for," Daniel's friend, Nancy Larssen, told Deutsche Welle (DW).
"I think it's sad that in the media they're just saying that a German has died, and that's why all the neo-Nazis and hooligans are out, but the media should describe who died, and what skin colour he had, because I don't think they'd be doing all this if they knew."
State and local officials appealed for calm as thousands of people took to the streets in Monday's protests that turned violent after injuries caused by fireworks thrown from both sides.
Local media reported Neo-Nazis performing the Nazi salute, and local TV showed footage of skinheads chasing a man.
"The scenes of people going after those who look like foreigners scare us. We want to show that Chemnitz has another side that is cosmopolitan and opposes xenophobia," Tim Detzner, head of the radical left party in Chemnitz, said at the anti-fascist rally.
Demonstrators waving German and Bavarian flags were also present nearby, some breaking through police barriers aimed at keeping the two sides apart.
Spokesperson for German Chancellor Angela Merkel's said Germany would not tolerate "vigilante justice".
"We don't tolerate such unlawful assemblies and the hounding of people who look different or have different origins, and attempts to spread hatred on the streets," Steffen Seibert said at a regular news briefing.
The far-right has surged across Europe during the continent's migrant crisis and increasing political rhetoric against Islam.
Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany party (AfD) is now the main opposition party, and Merkel faces opposition within her governing coalition for her immigration policies.
More than a million people fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East have sought refuge in Germany since 2015.
