Burnley fan stabbed in Greece before Olympiakos game

A Burnley fan was stabbed, and four others were injured, before the first leg of their Europa League play-off against Olympiakos in Greece.

The fan needed stitches to a leg wound and received medical attention at the stadium in Piraeus near Athens.

More than 900 Burnley fans travelled to Greece for the game; 22 were held by police for being drunk and disorderly.

Burnley lost the game, the first leg of the Europa League play-off round, 3-1. The second leg takes place on Thursday.

A statement from the club said: "The vast majority [of our fans] were once again impeccably behaved, with the coaching operation to transport supporters to the ground put in place by the club again a great success, as it was in the previous round in Istanbul.

"However, five of our supporters were unfortunately injured - including a person who received a stab wound to the leg - and received medical attention at the stadium.

"Those injured all travelled independently to the stadium, outside the organised travel operation."

The club added that the 22 fans detained were not arrested and were released later on Thursday night without charge.

The club said they were working closely with Olympiakos and local police to investigate the incidents.

Burnley, who went into the game unbeaten in their previous four qualifying games under manager Sean Dyche, have not been in European competition since 1966-67.

A ROMA fan who admitted attacking Liverpool supporters outside Anfield before their Champions League game has been jailed for two and a half years.



Violence marred the home leg of Liverpool's Champions League game against Roma.

A gang of Ultras attacked Liverpool fans with belts outside Anfield in shocking scenes.

In a separate incident during the melee, Sean Cox was left in a critical condition.

Although he wasn't involved directly in attacking Mr Cox, Sciusco has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for his part in the disorder.

At a sentencing, Mr Sciusco was told his actions were a slap in the face to "Scouse hospitality".

As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Judge Mark Brown told him: "During the past few years, the British police and the FA have done a great deal to try to eradicate this kind of mindless public disorder so that people can attend football matches without the fear or violence and intimidation.

"Young people are often present and it is for many a family occasion. You had traveled from Italy for the game and were a visitor to this country.

"The Liverpool people had welcomed the Italian supporters with their usual Scouse generosity and your actions were a slap in the face to that hospitality. You have tarnished the reputation of Italian football supporters and Italian football."

Judge Brown added that the attack on Mr Cox had an impact of the level of harm and could not be ignored.

Dad-of-three Cox, from the Republic of Ireland, was forced to undergo major surgery after suffering a bleed on the brain.

He was then placed in an induced coma.
