Hooligans fought running battles after AFC Telford match - 20/10/2016
Source : http://www.shropshirestar.com/
Three teenagers have admitted their part in running battles that took place after an AFC Telford game between rival sets of supporters.
Trouble flared in Wellington town centre after the FA Trophy first round clash between Telford and Chester.
The game, at the New Bucks Head on December 13, 2014, ended 1-1.
But a court heard the teenagers were more interested in looking for trouble than following the football.
They were involved in running battles that had been pre-arranged, Shrewsbury Crown Court was told.
Daniel Lloyd, 19, of Longfellow Road, Sedgley, was one of the three involved. The teenager is currently serving a two-year prison term for his part in an attack on Watford fan Nic Cruwys.
Mr Cruwys, 44, spent three weeks in a coma and was left with brain injuries after being attacked by Lloyd, who punched him to the ground, and a group of others following a game between Watford and Wolves at Molineux in March last year.
One man and eight teenagers had been due to stand trial on charges of affray at Shrewsbury Crown Court in relation to the Telford trouble, starting this week and expected to last for 10 weeks.
But three of the teenagers entered guilty pleas to a lesser charge of causing fear or provocation of violence at court.
Two 16-year-olds, who cannot be named for legal reasons, also pleaded guilty to causing fear or provocation of violence in relation to the Telford trouble at court yesterday.
Barristers said the pleas were entered on the basis the three did not use any violence themselves, but “lent support” when they saw violence present.
As a result of the pleas the prosecution offered no evidence against the rest of the defendants in the dock – Bradley Gosling, 21, of View Street, Hednesford; River Greenfield, 18, of Brands Meadow, Muxton, Telford; and two 17-year-olds and two 16-year-olds who cannot be named for legal reasons.
Not guilty verdicts were formally returned.
No evidence was also offered in relation to a second charge of affray against Lloyd from a separate incident on the same day, and he was also found not guilty of that charge. Judge Peter Barrie said: “This relates to an incident of violence that took place after a football match that had taken place in Telford between Telford and Chester.
“The prosecution case was a number of supporters of the two teams engaged in violent behaviour on the streets of Telford after the match, some of it organised and arranged.
“Comings and goings were captured on CCTV but not very much of the actual fighting. It also happened after dark, so working out who does what is a challenge for everybody concerned.”
The three will be sentenced at a later date to be confirmed after the probation service has compiled pre-sentence reports.
Prosecutor Mr James Coutts said football banning orders would also be sought for the trio, although Lloyd is already subject to an eight-year banning order and a lifetime ban from Molineux as a result of the attack on Mr Cruwys.
Football hooliganism and organised brawls between gangs at matches were commonplace in the 1970s and 1980s but are thought to be much less frequent in the modern era.
While violence among fans is generally less of a problem, the rise of social media now means it is easier than ever to organise fights between rival fans.
Messages found in the mobile phone of Daniel Lloyd indicated the teenager was regularly involved in fights with opposing football fans.
The texts, sent a month after he was caught on CCTV in a confrontation with Chester fans in Wellington, were logged as evidence in the case against him and showed arrangements to meet up with other fans for potential violent activity.
Lloyd also sent a message to someone saying he had been fined £90 for a public disorder offence in another area where Wolves were playing.
Shrewsbury Crown Court had heard the teenager was part of a gang who were regular visitors to AFC Telford.
They had been thrown out of the New Bucks Head during the game with Chester in December 2014, a couple of hours before the confrontation took place with Chester supporters in Wellington town centre near the train station.
AFC Telford today made it clear those involved in the hooliganism were unknown to the club. It said the trouble did not happen at the ground but at Wellington Station, which is a mile away.

Coins, bottles and even seats thrown as West Ham and Chelsea fans clash at London Stadium
Crowd trouble once again marred a game at West Ham's London Stadium after their victory over Chelsea became tainted by violence.
Record amounts of police were deployed for the fixture between these two rivals but it wasn't enough to keep a lid on fighting between fans.
Segregation between the home and away supporters was destroyed as fans brawled in the dying minutes of the clash.
Coins, bottles and even seats were thrown as police and stewards acted quickly to try and separate fans.
Police said seven public order arrests were made on the night and promised an investigation to identify any more troublemakers.
Commander BJ Harrington from the Met said: "There were a minority of people who attended the match that were clearly intent on being involved in confrontation and violence."
Chelsea fans' way out of the ground was sealed off by security barriers in the immediate vicinity of the stadium but the mile-long route to Stratford station, a key weakness in the hope for peace between the rival supporter groups, is only sparsely populated by police serials - the operational name for groups of officers.
"They're going to have to do something about this," one police officer told Mirror Football.
"Operationally it is the worst football stadium I have ever worked out.
"It just isn't a football stadium.
"The segregation inside the ground isn't enough and out here it's impossible."
A helicopter whirred overhead as sirens raced to Stratford station in the aftermath of the game, and West Ham will once again face questions over their new home and its suitability to host games.
Hammers manager Slaven Bilic said: “Whatever happened, we are totally against it as a club.
"For those kind of things to happen, especially in England, is unacceptable.
“I can say only that I noticed it. I was more concentrated on telling Aaron Cresswell not to watch it and to watch the game.”
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte added: “I don’t like this type of situation.
"It is important always to see the right atmosphere, above all in England, and it is right to maintain this habit because this country is fantastic with this aspect. "
The Hammers condemned the violence and have vowed to take action against anyone involved.
A club statement said: "West Ham United and London Stadium partners unreservedly condemn the behaviour of individuals involved in incidents during this evening’s fixture with Chelsea.
"Whilst quickly brought under control, the Club, in line with its clear zero tolerance policy, will work closely with London Stadium 185, the Metropolitan Police Service and Chelsea to identify the individuals involved.
"London Stadium is fitted with a state of the art Panomera CCTV system which provides HD footage of every area of the ground and has led to the successful identification and subsequent banning of 23 individuals already this season.
"Once identified, those found to have acted improperly will be banned from attending any West Ham United fixtures for life and we will request the courts serve banning orders to prevent these individuals attending any other football.
"West Ham United have 10,000 under-16 season ticket holders and 25,000 supporters who attend as part of a family unit, and the Club and Stadium partners have been working hard to ensure that the Stadium is a safe and family friendly environment for all home and away supporters.
"As such, the purchase of tickets for tonight’s fixture was limited to supporters with a recorded West Ham United purchase history and limited to only one ticket per person.
"We must stress that the overwhelming majority of supporters who have visited London Stadium have supported the team exceptionally and behaved impeccably."
The Met police said in a statement: "Police have made seven arrests following disorder at the London stadium during the EFL Cup match between West Ham and Chelsea.
"The seven men were arrested for public order offences and are currently in custody at various police stations.
"In addition to these arrests, 30 people were issued with directions to disperse under antisocial behaviour legislation prior to the match."
Commander BJ Harrington added: "Although the vast majority of people left the stadium peacefully and were well behaved, there were a minority of people who attended the match that were clearly intent on being involved in confrontation and violence.
"Despite extensive work with both clubs and the London Stadium partners as well as a large and robust policing operation, there were unacceptable incidents inside and outside the stadium, before, during and after the game.
"We welcome the condemnation from partners and have already started a post match investigation.
"We have already made seven arrests and will work tirelessly to identify people involved and bring them to justice."

West Ham to ban 200 supporters after derby trouble against Chelsea - 27/10/2016
Source : https://www.theguardian.com/
West Ham United will pursue a zero tolerance policy against the thugs they believe are damaging their image and are ready to ban 200 of them following the ugly scenes that marred their EFL Cup win over Chelsea at the London Stadium.
The club mounted a massive security operation for the visit on Wednesday of Chelsea, who brought 5,182 travelling fans, and it featured police officers inside the stadium concourses and rapid response units outside it. There were more than 900 stewards on duty.
There were tensions and instances of trouble throughout but the abiding images were provided during stoppage time, when the Chelsea supporters filed towards the exit at the back of the lower tier of the Sir Trevor Brooking Stand. Some West Ham fans ran through segregation lines to confront them and, although the rival factions were kept apart by the stewards, there were many missiles thrown, including ripped-up seats, bottles and coins. There was bitter frustration among the West Ham hierarchy because they were told by experts from the police and safety groups that the stadium operation had been a success.
The security line between the two sets of supporters was not breached and the riot police arrived on the scene less than 60 seconds after they were called. But it did not stop what was extremely damaging footage towards the end from being beamed round the world and pushing the team’s 2-1 victory down the news agenda. The club have resolved to send the strongest possible message to the hooligan minority, partly because they are mindful that, in their new stadium, they have 10,000 children among their season ticket holders.
They are in the process of sifting through the CCTV footage to identify the offenders. The club are looking at 200 cases, with the worst offences being the missile throwing. They intend to ban those individuals for life. But they will also clamp down on others. They have seen footage of people making throat-slitting gestures; others running through a segregation block of 25 unsold seats to get into the stewards’ faces and some more who dashed back to join the mêlée, having initially left the stadium. The club plan to ban these individuals for the remainder of the season. West Ham’s image has taken plenty of hits since their move to the London Stadium because of various instances of disorder, which has led them to ban 23 fans already.
The West Ham vice-chair, Karren Brady, said on Twitter: “Fantastic result last night. The team were exceptional & atmosphere electric. Shame that a few marred the occasion. WHUFC and London Stadium have today been identifying all of them and we will be issuing banning orders. Football doesn’t want these people & with over 55,000 supporters on our season ticket waiting list we certainly don’t need them at WHUFC.”
A spokesperson for London Stadium partners West Ham United, E20 Stadium LLP and London Stadium 185 said: “An extensive safety and security operation was delivered in and around London Stadium throughout Wednesday’s match with close co-ordination between West Ham United, London Stadium 185 and the Metropolitan Police Service. A small number of individuals were intent on becoming involved in disorder and are being investigated, identified and banned from London Stadium as a matter of priority.
“The response of our safety and security teams was measured, fast and effective and we commend our stewarding.
“It must be stressed that the vast majority of West Ham United and visiting supporters have behaved impeccably and we are committed to ensuring that they can continue to support their team in a safe environment.”

Manchester United toilets destroyed by Manchester City fans as disgruntled away supporters vent fury at Old Trafford
Supporters vented their frustrations by smashing up the toilets in the away end at Old Trafford.
Pictures show fans laughing and kicking urinals off the wall as they queue to relieve themselves.
There appears to be significant damage caused to the facilities, and only time will tell if United and City look to punish those involved.
It’s not the first time sets of fans have caused chaos in the bog, with Rangers fans tearing up toilets after a heavy defeat to Celtic in the Old Firm derby earlier this season.
