Angry fans gather outside Celtic Park after Champions League exit
An angry crowd of around 200 fans gathered outside Celtic Park's main entrance after the shattering play-off round defeat by Maribor, protesting against the club's board of directors, major shareholder Dermot Desmond and the chief executive Peter Lawwell, chanting "sack the board" and "where's the money gone?" and accusing the club of not investing enough in the squad.
The Slovenian champions won 1-0 when Marcos Tavares scored 15 minutes from time to cost Celtic at least £14m in guaranteed Champions League revenue. Instead the Scottish champions will be in Friday's draw for the Europa League groups.
The defeat heaped pressure on Deila, who said he understood the fans' anger. "Of course it's disappointing. This is a feeling I have to take with me. So do the players, the whole staff, the whole club. There are no excuses. This is the level it is. We haven't deserved to be in the Champions League.
"I really understand them [the angry supporters]. The only thing I can do is assure them that we are going to work really hard every day now so that next year we can sit in a better situation and be happy in this moment. We have to be honest. We haven't been good enough. That's the truth.
"The club wants to invest in the team. But I have only been here a short time and it's important we do things in a good way. It is very difficult to get the quality of the players I know the fans want us to get, with the salaries that we have.
"The Europa League is our level now. It is also a very good competition and we are going to get some good games there. We want to be one place - that's the Champions League. Hopefully we can get a new chance next year."
Deila insisted last season's top scorer, Kris Commons, still had a future under him despite not being used in the first leg in Slovenia and only coming on at half-time last night. His introduction added to Celtic's attacking threat but all they needed was a clean sheet and Celtic's poor defending was exposed by Maribor's late pressure.
Deila denied that bringing Commons had been unwise because it weakened the protection of his defence. "I don't think so because if we had continued like in the first half we would have conceded goals. We need to get much more out of what we did in the first half. That wasn't good enough.
"We lifted ourselves in the second half. We had some chances and they scored with their first chance of the second half. We put more pressure on them at the end of the first-half but in the end we didn't lose because of our defending. We lost because we didn't create anything."
Inevitably criticism will intensify on Deila and bookmakers McBookie.com last night issued a media release offering 2/1 that he would be the first manager to be sacked in the SPFL Premiership.
Ante Simundza, the Maribor coach, said he had expected the Celtic players to struggle under the expectations of a big Parkhead crowd, which they did. "It's very hard for every team to play at Celtic Park, and for the home team as well. The fans make a lot of pressure for the home team. The home fans are very tough with the team, they want them always to win."

Cardiff City supporters' bus window shattered by stone as fans travel home from Port Vale clash
A busload of Cardiff City fans leaving the Potteries after the club’s League Cup triumph over Port Vale were given a shock after a stone smashed part of a supporters’ bus window.
Pictures of the shattered glass on the supporters’ coach were circulated on Twitter and on Bluebirds forums following the late-night incident as travelling fans made their way back to South Wales.
Fans said the outer glazing of the bus window was damaged after they left the ground in Stoke-on-Trent.
A spokesman for Staffordshire Police confirmed an “unknown offender” threw a stone at the bus around the junction of Hamil Road and High Lane in the city.
No-one was injured although the outer panel of a window was smashed. Police said there were no other issues during the match, which saw Federico Macheda bag two goals on his debut and put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men through to the next round.
Sam Webb tweeted that the incident happened “as we were driving out of Port Vale”. He added: “Outer glazing got smashed.”
A Staffordshire Police man said: “We received a report at around 10pm on Tuesday that the outer window of a coach had been damaged.
“No-one was injured because the window wasn’t broken. An unknown offender had thrown a stone and it happened away from the ground on the junction of Hamil Road and the junction of High Lane.
“There were no other issues during the game. There was no attack or anything like that.”
No arrests have been made following the incident, the spokesman added.

Two football yobs targeted opposition fans as trouble broke out following a Carlisle United game
Two football yobs targeted opposition fans as trouble broke out following a Carlisle United game.
Police today said they would not tolerate anybody causing problems on match day as a court heard how one of the yobs called for violence with rival supporters while the other was “bouncing for a fight” and ran at them in the street.
The two men appeared separately at North Cumbria Magistrates’ Court in Carlisle to be sentenced for their behaviour after United’s first game of the season at home to Luton Town.
The court heard how Richard James Bell, 27, of Richardson Street, Denton Holme, Carlisle, was spotted by police after the match with a group of about 25 Blues fans who were known to pose a risk of trouble.
He was seen to run across Warwick Road with “clenched fists” towards Luton supporters, swearing at them.
Julie Hanson, prosecuting, said he looked very angry and was “bouncing for a fight”.
Bell admitted using threatening behaviour with intent to cause fear. He also pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine, which was found in a police search.
Martin McAlistair, in mitigation, said his client had felt a knock on the back of the head from somewhere. He looked around and one of the Luton fans was smiling towards him.
Bell was given a one-year community order, ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and pay court costs of £85.
Also appearing in court was David Walker, 25, of Talkin Tarn, near Brampton.
The court heard he went to the game with his grandad but after the match left him and walked up Warwick Road towards the city centre.
Police watched as he started to shout abuse towards the Luton fans, asking them to come across the road to fight.
Walker, the court heard, felt “goaded” by the away fans. He had drunk about eight pints before the match.
Mr McAlistair, also speaking on behalf of Walker, said he attended most games and this was an isolated incident.
Walker admitted using threatening behaviour with intent to cause fear.
Magistrates imposed a one-year community order and an eight-week 9.30pm to 4.30am curfew. He has to pay courts costs of £85.
Speaking after the cases, Superintendent Justin Bibby told the News & Star: “As a result of continued close working with the club, football-related crime in Carlisle is not a regular occurrence.
“On the isolated occasions it does occur, we work swiftly to deal with offenders and bring them to justice.
“The overwhelming majority of football fans enjoy their sport responsibly and we will not tolerate a minority interfering with that enjoyment.”
Carlisle were beaten 1-0 at Brunton Park by Luton on August 9 in a game that drew a crowd of 6,760 fans, including a large travelling support.

Just two arrests were made in the area around Portman Road for what police described as “low level” public order offences.
A large police presence worked to keep order along with stewards from Ipswich Town as crowds built up more than an hour before kick-off and as they left the stadium following the game.
Officers on horseback were used before and after the fixture to keep the rowdiest groups of fans apart as Canaries’ fans made their way to and from the railway station.
Before the match, police had asked that pubs in Ipswich close for two hours following the game.

Three Besiktas fans arrested during Arsenal Champions League clash
One man was arrested for affray and another for possession of a flare, while the third was detained for running on to the pitch during the game at the Emirates Stadium.
A huge procession of fans dancing and singing with lit flares filled Holloway Road as they made their way to the match which the Gunners won 1-0.
Police say two marches took place, one from Finsbury Park made up of mainly German Besiktas fans, with another from Paradise Park for the Turkish side’s Dutch followers.
Holloway Road was the scene of serious trouble involving visiting European fans in October when supporters of Italian club Napoli trashed Arsenal themed pastry restaurant Piebury Corner, smashing windows and leaving one man in hospital.
Despite the previous trouble at European games it was revealed last month that the Met could pull out of policing Arsenal games, due to the cost and lack of resources.

England: Lincoln City fans banned from matches for three years following pitch invasion - 28/08/2014
Source : http://www.lincolnshireecho.co.uk
Four Lincoln City fans have each been given three-year football banning orders after invading the pitch at Sincil Bank during a game last season.
Ryan Peckham, 18, Aaron Bee, 22, Timothy Campbell, 30, and a 17-year-old who can't be named for legal reasons, all ran on to the pitch during the last few minutes of the game against Barnet on April 26.
Lincoln Magistrates' Court heard that a crowd of around 100 other supporters followed the four on to the pitch causing the game to be delayed.
After they had all been removed from the pitch, Peckham, of Marlowe Drive, Lincoln, then re-entered and started doing press-ups in the goal area causing the game to be delayed for a second time.
The four claimed to have invaded the pitch in tribute to their friend, Matty Ellis, who died in a car crash near Alford on April 18.
All four admitted going on to the playing area without lawful authority.
Mark McNeil, defending Peckham, said that at no time was there any intention of violence from the four.
He said: "At no time was he (Peckham) provoking violence or offering violence.
"He was trying to draw attention to Matthew Ellis about his death.
"It was somewhat foolish but there was no intent of violence."
Bee, of Lamb Gardens, Lincoln, Campbell, of Staverton Crescent, Lincoln, Peckham and the 17-year-old have all been given three-year football banning orders.
They have each also been ordered to pay fines of £75 plus £85 costs and victims surcharges of £20.
Lucy Bogustawski, spokeswoman for Lincolnshire Police, said: “Lincolnshire Police has worked closely with Lincoln City FC in this investigation and we are very pleased with the outcome of the hearings at court today.
“We hope this sends a positive message both to fans attending football matches and the public generally, that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated. With the new football season now underway, and two high profile matches coming up against Grimsby Town and Bristol Rovers, we want everybody to be able to enjoy the matches without worry of disruption or disorder.
“We have a zero tolerance approach towards anyone who causes any kind of problems during these fixtures and we will seek to impose banning orders, as we have here, to prevent anybody who seeks to cause any disruption from even being given the opportunity to behave in the same way again.”

England: Football hooligan Craig Roberts gets 12 weeks for St George's Square brawl after Huddersfield Town v Barnsley game - 28/08/2014
Source : http://www.examiner.co.uk
A football yob who broke a bone in a police officer’s hand as he was arrested for his part in a town centre brawl has been handed another prison term.
Craig Roberts was jailed for 17 months following the incident in St George’s Square after a football match.
The fight involved a group of Barnsley supporters and erupted on March 1.
During a previous appearance at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court Roberts admitted charges of threatening behaviour and failing to comply with a banning order.
Roberts, of Brownroyd Avenue in Rawthorpe, was sent to Leeds Crown Court where he was jailed.
Today he appeared before District Judge Michael Fanning sitting in Huddersfield via a prison video link.
He pleaded guilty to assaulting a police constable in the execution of his duty.
The assault arose from the incident which happened at around 6pm after the Huddersfield Town v Barnsley game.
At that time Barnsley fans were on their way to Huddersfield Railway Station.
Roberts was part of a group of 10 to 15 people involved in a confrontation with around five Barnsley supporters.
There was an exchange of blows and Roberts, described as the main instigator, was caught in Westgate.
He was then hauled into a police van loaded with gear including riot shields.
Andy Wills, prosecuting, said Roberts took an immediate dislike to one of the officers and called him derogatory names.
The 29-year-old then started to wipe blood he had from his injuries onto the jacket of another officer.
Mr Wills said that the officer used a ‘pre-emptive strike’ to stop Roberts from causing him harm.
He said: “There was a struggle. He believed he (Roberts) was going to bite him or headbutt him.
“The officer noticed some damage to his hand.
“He was taken to hospital and it was confirmed he’d broken a bone in his right hand as a result of the incident.”
In interview Roberts did say he felt he felt he was responsible for the officer’s injuries.
He was previously jailed for 17 months after the offence was committed during his suspended sentence order.
Roberts also received a football banning order for six years.
Judge Fanning sentenced him to 12 weeks for the new offence, but this will run concurrently to and not affect his current sentence.
He told him: “This is an incident which arose during a period of sustained football-related violence for which you have already received a lengthy sentence.
“Lashing out and scuffling with officers is always something that will attract a heavy sentence.”
