Supporters arrested over smoke bomb at St Mirren v Motherwell game
Four football fans have been arrested after flares and smoke bombs were set off during a match between St Mirren and Motherwell.
The incident occurred during the Scottish Premiership game on Saturday at St Mirren Park in Paisley, Renfrewshire.
Police Scotland confirmed two people were arrested in the stadium after the pyrotechnic items were set off in the away support end of the stadium.
The force said two more fans in the ground were arrested over alleged disorder after the game kicked off at 3pm.
On Monday, the police released a statement in relation to a “number of comments on social media regarding policing” of the match.
Chief Superintendent Alan Speirs: "We responded to a report of flares and smoke bombs being let off at St Mirren Park which subsequently resulted in the arrest of two people. A further two arrests were made in respect of disorder within the stadium. The use of both flares and smoke bombs pose a significant risk to spectators and those staff working within the football stadium.
"Police Scotland continues to appeal to all football fans across Scotland not to take smoke bombs or flares into football matches because of the real dangers they pose.
"As always, we are conducting a review of the police deployment in response to those incidents at St Mirren Park, and we'd like to reassure the public that our priority is to keep people safe - which was our main motivation on Saturday."
A group of Motherwell fans were kept in the stadium by police officers after the final whistle.
The match finished 1-0 to the away side after John Sutton scored the winning goal in the 38th minute.

Italy : Inter Milan must close part of San Siro for next home game - 17/09/2013
Source : http://www1.skysports.com
Inter Milan have been ordered to close the north end of the San Siro for their next home game against Fiorentina.
Serie A officials have imposed the sanction as punishment for Inter fans aiming racist chants at Juventus players last weekend.
The north end of the San Siro is traditionally the most boisterous section of the stadium, but the upper "green" section will now be off limits for the visit of Fiorentina on September 26.
A statement released by Serie A claimed "chants and noises of a racist nature were heard during both halves of the game".
The alleged racist abuse was aimed at the two black players in the Juventus side, Ghanaian Kwadwo Asamoah and former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.
Inter fans were also accused of aiming laser pens at the match officials and Juventus players.

The Netherlands : Ajax head to court to get fans into PSV match - ??/09/2013
Source : http://in.reuters.com
Ajax Amsterdam are going to court on Wednesday to try and overturn a ban on their supporters attending their weekend clash against fellow Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven.
Ajax, together with two supporters groups, are taking the action against the city of Eindhoven who, wary of possible supporter violence, had previously decided Ajax fans could only travel to the Philips Stadium by special trains.
This is not possible at the weekend because of work on the railway, Ajax said on their website www.ajax.nl.
Dutch railways said they were unable to find a solution but Eindhoven last weekend allowed a busload of Ajax fans to watch their reserve team play FC Eindhoven in the Dutch second tier.
The complaint will be heard in Den Bosch on Wednesday.

Italy : Police target nine Inter ultras over fan attack- 18/09/2013
Source : http://www.thesundaily.my
Police in Milan have identified nine Inter Milan supporters who are suspected of taking part in the beating of a Juventus fan in the stands during the 'Derby d'Italia' last weekend.
The Serie A giants have already been sanctioned by league officials for racist incidents during the 1-1 draw at the San Siro last Saturday.
The match was also marred by the attack on the Juventus fan who, after several verbal exchanges, suffered a beating that endured for a minute by up to 20 ultras fans of the Nerazzurri.
Police on Wednesday told domestic news agency ANSA they had identified the culprits.thanks to video surveillance and the cross-checking of numbered tickets as well as season tickets.
No further details were given in the report.
Serie A disciplinary bosses on Wednesday sanctioned Inter by closing the upper 'green' section of the 'Curva Nord', where the club's die-hard fans usually congregate for home games, for their next home game, against Fiorentina, on September 26.
The sanction was dealt after "chants and noises of a racist nature were heard during both halves of the game", said a statement.
Juventus have two black players in their side, Ghanaian Kwadwo Asamoah and Frenchman Paul Pogba.
Inter fans were also accused of targeting the match referee and Juventus players with laser pens.

Warsaw fans cause havoc in Eternal City
Hordes of Legia Warsaw fans caused disruption in Rome, prompting over a dozen arrests in the hours leading up to a Europa League tie against Serie A side Lazio, reports said Thursday.
Police who surrounded the Olympic Stadium were forced into action when dozens of supporters from the Polish first division side tried to break through barriers.
Police made 16 arrests and confiscated a number of dangerous weapons from the visiting team's fans, according to ANSA.
The report said groups of unruly fans had been causing disruption since arriving in the Italian capital on Wednesday evening.
Many gathered in Rome's tourist hotspots throughout the day on Thursday. It was reported that some activated the emergency brake on a train going from Rome to Lido and that others had refused to pay for taxis.
Police were also forced to round up dozens of fans who had congregated at the Colosseum and await a coach to take them to the stadium, while there were other incidents at the city's Piazza Venezia.

UEFA orders Legia Warsaw to play in empty stadium for fans' racism - 19/09/2013
Source : http://www.ctvnews.ca
UEFA has ordered Legia Warsaw to play in an empty stadium after more racist incidents involving its fans at Champions League matches.
The punishment will apply when Legia hosts Apollon Limassol in a Europa League group match on Oct. 3.
UEFA says a second match sanction was deferred for a five-year probationary period. Legia must pay a 150,000 euros ($203,000) fine.
UEFA charged the club with several offences, including racist behaviour and the displaying of racist banners, at home and away matches against Molde and Steaua Bucharest in July and August.
Legia was eliminated by Steaua and dropped into the second-tier Europa League. It plays at Lazio later Thursday.
Part of Legia's stadium was partially closed when it hosted Steaua as punishment for previous incidents involving fans.

A football match in Sweden was disrupted and five people were arrested on Thursday when Hammarby supporters invaded a stand and began throwing objects at the visiting GAIS fans below.
Match officials stopped the second-tier clash at Stockholm's Tele2 Arena after 56 minutes as beer, fireworks and other objects rained down on the supporters of Gothenburg club GAIS.
Swedish state broadcaster SVT reported that police had made five arrests at the match, which resumed after a break of about 50 minutes. Hammarby went on to win 3-1.
Stockholm club Hammarby are in fifth place but with six games left promotion to the top flight, from which they were relegated in 2009, is now almost impossible.
The home fans expressed their disappointment with a half-hour long silent protest at the beginning of the game.

Argentina tests anti-hooligan card system for fans - 20/09/2013
Source : http://uk.reuters.com
Fans going to Sunday's match between Colon and San Lorenzo in Santa Fe will be guinea pigs for a cutting-edge biometrics system aimed at combating hooliganism that has been blamed for 70 deaths in the last decade.
The Argentine Football Association's (AFA) ambitious new system, known as "AFA-Plus", has been a year in the making and is designed to drastically reduce football-related violence by prohibiting known hooligans from entering stadiums and will also reduce ticket touting and fake ticket sales.
Anyone wishing to enter a first division stadium, from fans to technical staff to police, will first need to register in one of the club's assigned offices.
Once registered, they will be given a magnetic identity card that contains their personal information, a photo and digital finger prints.
AFA spokesman Ernesto Cherquis Bialo said the measures were meant to weed out violent offenders.
"The objective is to kick out the violent people. We want to get rid of the business of the barrabravas," said Cherquis, using the local term for football hooligans.
"We want there to be better revenue for the clubs, we want families to go back to football games and, more than anything, we want order in football and not fear," he told Reuters.
Fans have been lining up to register ahead of the implementation of the new security measures expected to be rolled out later this season.
FANS SCEPTICAL
Most said they understood the importance of the extra security measures, but voiced doubts the system will keep out those it is designed to bar from entering the clubs.
"It's good on the one hand, but on the other, not so much. Because for me, the barrabravas who are the main problem for safety at football games, I think they're still going to get in," fan Facundo Salomon told Reuters.
Fellow supporter Raul Luoni echoed the sentiment when he said: "The main problem is the (football) directors who know who shouldn't get in (to games), but they get in all the same and I don't think they will ever fix that."
Cherquis said rolling the system out at the Colon-San Lorenzo match will give the AFA a chance to learn how the system works and time to iron out all the kinks before going live.
"We're going to hear all the grievances there, all the delays. Someone is going to say to the referee, ‘delay the game because there are a ton of people outside'. Any of this could happen, but also with this example we can better implement the system," he said.
The AFA is investing 300 million Argentine pesos ($52.09 million) in the new security measures, which will require, among other things, turnstiles, card scanners and non-transferable membership cards.
There have been 269 hooligan-related deaths in Argentine football since 1924.

Swindon Town - Bristol City - 21/09/2013
Source : http://www.thisiswiltshire.co.uk
Police will be out in force at Swindon Town clash with Bristol City
POLICE will have a large presence in the town centre as Swindon Town take on near neighbours Bristol City – and officers hope there will be no repeat of ugly scenes that have marred previous encounters between the teams.
Today marks the first time the two teams have met at the County Ground in almost eight years, since both teams find themselves in the same division of the Football League again.
Both Wiltshire Police and the club have been in discussions to plan how they will manage the 12,500 fans, including 2,500 City supporters, expected to make their way to the stadium for the 3pm kick-off.
But Chief Inspector Keith Ewart admitted the length of time that has lapsed since the two sides last faced each other has meant there was an element of the unknown in what officers expect.
He said: “Of course it’s a local derby and there has been some history of disorder in games involving Bristol City, but it’s been a while since they played each other so it’s a little bit of an unknown quantity.”
In previous matches at SN1 fans have clashed, most notably before the last league game between the two sides in 2005 when around 30 Bristol City fans heard singing by Town fans at the Merlin pub, in Drove Road, and broke down the wall from the house opposite before throwing stones and rocks at the pub and smashing windows.
More recently, City supporters clashed with their Bristol Rovers rivals following the sides’ Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie earlier this month, with 12 arrested after three police officers were left needing treatment, while also 10 Swindon Town fans are currently facing court action over a violent disorder in Brentford in May.
Chief Insp Ewart said: “This is a category C game and will be appropriately policed.
“We have spoken with the club and based our staffing on previous history, intelligence that has come into us and other factors including the numbers of people attending.
“The message is it’s a high-profile game and we will have a visible police presence in the town centre - many fans will be enjoying the game and we hope that nobody engages in altercations or inappropriate conduct.
“There will be a large police presence in the area all day and evening and we are conscious of the impact it will have on the local community. We are optimistic and have the resources in place as appropriate.”
Mark Isaacs, operations manager at the football club, said: “We had a planning meeting with the police on Tuesday for around three or four hours, making sure our plans are set for the City game and also the Chelsea game on Tuesday so we are well prepared.
“We have plenty of stewards on and we hope the fans enjoy what should be an interesting derby.”
