Two people were arrested and five people ejected from Home Park as Plymouth Argyle clashed with Bristol Rovers on Saturday afternoon.
Police mounted a large-scale operation to ward off trouble at what was categorised a match with the potential for violent trouble.
150 officers were deployed at and around the ground and special barriers were brought in from Exeter to firect the fans.
The 15ft high metal barriers have not been used at a football match in Devon or Cornwall before - and are generally stored away in case of a nuclear or bio-hazard incident.
Chief Inspector Brendan Brookshaw hailed the success of the operation and said the low number of arrests and ejections was a "very good outcome".

England : Football hooligan who stabbed Everton fan jailed for five years - 03/09/2013
Source : http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk
QPR supporter Leon Hughes smirked as he attacked young Blues fan outside Goodison.
A football hooligan who smirked after plunging a knife into the chest of an innocent Everton fan was jailed.
Queens Park Rangers supporter Leon Hughes, 24, had travelled up to Liverpool on a coach from London with the fish knife in his pocket before committing the horrific attack after a Premier League game at Goodison Park.
Simon Duncan, prosecuting, told Liverpool Crown Court the stabbing happened at around 4.45pm on April 13 this year while hundreds of fans, including women and children, were flooding home along Priory Road near the ground.
He said: “Several QPR fans, including the defendant, used the emergency exit to leave one of their buses to confront Everton fans. The QPR fans appeared to be drunk and spoiling for a fight.”
He described how 20-year-old season ticket holder Nikolas Lintott saw one of the QPR fans picking on a woman in an Everton shirt and tried to step in but was then punched and kicked.
While skirmishes developed between fans on both sides Hughes approached armed with the knife and stabbed him.
Mr Duncan said: “He recalled seeing the blade being thrust towards his chest and that the male grinned and put the blade back in his pocket.
“It appears the defendant was pleased with what he had done. The complainant saw the smirk and another witness saw a smug smile which soon turned to laughter.”
Mr Lintott was helped by a passing paramedic and taken to hospital with a punctured lung, but miraculously suffered no lasting damage and was discharged the next day.
Hughes, who was easily identified by his silver tooth and sleeve tattoo got back on the bus and went home to Eastleigh Walk, London, but was tracked by Merseyside police through his Twitter account.
When confronted by detectives he denied having anything to do with the attack, saying he got down from the bus to have a look and left because he was scared.
But later pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and possession of a knife.
His lawyer said he had suffered trauma as a child and took to “habitually” carrying the knife after being badly beaten up.
The judge, Recorder Nicholas Clarke, QC, said: “The unfortunate Mr Lintott, a season ticket holder at Everton was doing nothing more than trying to help a woman who had become involved in the fracas. You unfolded your blade and plunged it straight into his chest. You could have killed him.
“Your reaction was to smirk at what you had done. You appeared smug to those who had seen you and were seen laughing by another witness. The location and timing of the incident it seems to me are particular factors to which I ought to have regard. The message has to go out that people who use violence in such circumstances will be punished severely.”
He jailed Hughes for five years with an extended licence of three years and imposed an eight year football banning order prevented him from entering any town or city where QPR are playing.
Speaking after the case Detective Sergeant Steve Reardon said: “This was a particularly nasty assault, on a man who was just trying to do the right thing and assist what he thought was a woman in need.
“Today's sentence reflects the severity of this incident and I hope it brings the victim some sense of justice.
“Liverpool is a safe city to visit, and thousands of football fans travel into our city every week to watch our premiership clubs – I'd like to reassure visitors and fans that incidents such as this are rare and we work with partners to do all we can to bring offenders to justice, as in this case.”
A second QPR fan, Victor Stevenson, 63, of Dulwich, London has been charged with assault and affray in relation to the fighting and will appear before the court in November.

England : 39 United fans facing bans from matches - 11/09/2013
Source : http://www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk
THE number of fans banned from Scunthorpe United's Glanford Park ground has increased more than three-fold in the past 10 months.
Last November, the Iron – then in League One – reported to the Home Office a total of 11 banning orders had been imposed against supporters – well below the 38 figure for neighbouring Sheffield United.
But the club's general manager, David Beeby, has confirmed the current figure stands at 39 – all of them males banned for varying periods of up to 10 years.
The sharp rise is mainly due to Operation Feather – a joint initiative involving Humberside Police and the club – undertaken following a pitch invasion and disorder during the final home game of the season against Swindon Town in April.
As a result, 26 fans have so far been issued with bans, all but one for three years. The longest exclusion order of 10 years was a first for North Lincolnshire.
The head of policing in Northern Lincolnshire has praised officers for their role in the operation – and the Scunthorpe Telegraph for its support.
Chief Superintendent Tony Forbes, divisional commander for the South Bank, said: "We took a decision that if we did not launch a full investigation that people would think that disorder is fair game at Scunthorpe United football matches.
"We want Scunthorpe United to be a place where families can go to enjoy the football, a place where people are happy to go to without the threat of violence or disorder.
"I would like to thank the Telegraph for its support and publicising the operation as, without this, we could not have got the message out."
In dealing with football bans, the force followed the guidelines laid down by the Association of Chief Police Officers and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).
Nick Hawkins, lead sports prosecutor at the CPS, said: "There is no place for criminal behaviour in football grounds and the CPS is clear about how those engaging in violent, abusive or dangerous behaviour at football matches will be dealt with; where there is sufficient evidence to bring offenders before a court on appropriate criminal charges and a football banning order is necessary, a prosecution is likely."
Deputy Chief Constable Andy Holt, national policing lead on football policing, said: "We work with the CPS to enforce football banning orders which is vital in this respect. And we are grateful to those genuine football fans who support us in dealing with those who would blight the sport with violence."

England : Banning orders for East Lancs football hooligans - 12/09/2013
Source : http://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk
FOOTBALL hooligans from across East Lancashire who became embroiled in a street brawl following a pre-season game have been banned from every ground in the country for six years.
And two of the trio, detained after violence broke out in the wake of a friendly match between Burnley and Carlisle United last July, have been jailed by magistrates.
Police believe the confrontation in Carlisle city centre, after the Brunton Park clash which the Clarets won 4-1, had been pre-arranged by troublemakers.
Philip Palmer, 29, of Russell Court, and Sean Taggart, 25, of Villiers Street, both Burnley, and William Guilfoyle, also 25, of Cattle Street, Great Harwood, were convicted of using threatening behaviour when they appeared before North Cumbria Magistrates' Court.
Palmer and Taggart were each jailed for 60 days and given six-year football banning orders. Guilfoyle was given a one-year community order with 120 hours community service, and a four-year banning order.
After the case, Insp Neil Marr, of Lancashire Police, said: “I hope that the sentences passed down to Palmer, Taggart and Guilfoyle reflect how serious the police and the courts view these offences. While the majority of fans enjoy football matches and don’t get involved in any trouble, there are a few who think it’s acceptable to get involved in violent situations.
“I hope that these sentences serve as a warning that we will not tolerate any type of disruptive or violent behaviour from any football fans in Lancashire.
“My message to all fans, whether home or away, is to attend the match and not get involved in any incidents that could escalate into any type of altercation or violence.”
Two other Clarets fans and a Carlisle United supporter were released without charge. Around 420 fans are thought to have made the trip to Cumbria for the tie, where an increased police presence was noted.

Greece : PAOK Fans Attack Golden Dawn HQ - 11/09/2013
Source : http://greece.greekreporter.com
The “war” between the fans of the Thessalonian association football club PAOK FC and Golden Dawn seems to have gotten even worse after the incident with the Albanian footballer Ergys Kace.
On Sept 4, Kace uploaded a photo on his personal Facebook account wearing a T-shirt of the Kosovo Liberation Army (UCK). A few days ago, Golden Dawn published a provocative announcement against PAOK footballer Ergys Kace.
On the afternoon of September 11 (shortly after 18:00) PAOK fans attacked with stones the central headquarters of Golden Dawn in Thessaloniki at Kazatzaki Street in reaction to Golden Dawn’s announcement.
The young men on motorbikes caused material damage with the stones they threw. As passers-by stated, small clashes occurred as the supporters of Golden Dawn that were in the offices at the time came out on the street to face PAOK fans.
The police arrived on the scene and arrested 40 people. No report of injury has been made so far. The detainees were transferred to the Police Department of Democracy Square in Thessaloniki, while draconian security measures have been taken in the region.

England : Senior police could face Hillsborough charges - 13/09/2013
Source : http://www.espn.co.uk
Senior police officers on duty when 96 Liverpool fans died in the Hillsborough disaster could face criminal charges, according to investigators.
Jon Stoddart has indicated that senior officers - in addition to the South Yorkshire Police force as a whole, Sheffield Wednesday FC, Sheffield City Council and the Football Association - are being investigated for manslaughter.
The disaster victims were crushed to death on an over-crowded section of terracing at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough, home of Sheffield Wednesday, on April 15, 1989.
An independent report, published on September 12 last year, exonerated fans of any blame for the tragedy, and laid bare the extent to which the police and emergency services attempted to cover up their own culpability.
Stoddard, the former chief constable of Durham Police, is leading an investigation focusing on possible criminal behaviour by any people or bodies with responsibility for fan safety at Hillsborough.
That is running alongside a separate investigation being run by the Independent Police Complaints Commission, the UK police watchdog, into the role played by police on the day of the tragedy and the subsequent cover-up.
Asked if South Yorkshire police, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield city council and the FA were being investigated for possible criminal culpability, Stoddart said: "Yes, absolutely."
He added: "We are exploring all liability, both public and individual.
"We are looking at unlawful killing; who is responsible for the deaths. Those 96 people went to Hillsborough to watch a football match and didn't return home. We want to know what happened, how it happened and why, and who is responsible.
"Clearly it is about more than just the command and control [of the 54,000 crowd at Hillsborough by South Yorkshire Police] and what happened with the emergency services' response.
"It is about the safety of the stadium, certification, the planning and preparation, the engineering and design that went into the Leppings Lane end [where the 96 people died]."
Stoddart's investigation, codenamed Operation Resolve and given a budget by the Government of £9.6 million, has to apply UK law as it was in 1989, at the time of the tragedy.
This means any organisations brought to court would face charges of gross negligence manslaughter, rather than corporate manslaughter, which did not become law until 2008.
Stoddart's team are investigating the role of Sheffield Wednesday, who offered to host the 1989 semi-final despite the fact that Hillsborough's safety certificate was 10 years out of date.
Sheffield city council, which was legally responsible for licensing the stadium as safe, and the FA, which approved the use of the stadium for the match despite previous crushes at semi-finals there in 1981, 1987 and 1988 - in which no one was killed - are also being investigated for potential manslaughter charges.

Football fans cause disturbance in Lichfield
THREE coach-loads of Newcastle United fans went on a drunken rampage through Lichfield's picturesque streets on Saturday afternoon.
Police were called after the coaches stopped off in the city on their way to a match at Aston Villa.
At around 1pm, residents in Beacon Street were disturbed by shouting, with many of the culprits walking in front of cars and disrupting traffic.
The street itself was littered with bottles, cans and other rubbish, and drinkers left empties on residents' windowsills.
One of the coach drivers later cleared up the rubbish but fans continued to scream and shout up Beacon Street.
There were also gangs of fans hanging around in the city centre.
Police attended the scene but made no arrests.
The coaches were all due to leave by 1.15pm to get to the match but fans remained making a racket in Beacon Street, where residents continued to report intimidating shouting, disruption of cars and the noise of breaking glass.
The yobs eventually left shortly before 2pm, just before police came back.
Community-minded residents from the area all mucked in to help clear up the mess in Beacon Street.
City resident Annette Rubery was one of many residents who witnessed the disturbance.
"Lots of football fans were standing around and shouting in the street, stopping the cars in a huge crowd outside the George and Dragon pub," she said.
"I needed to get to the hairdressers and I didn't dare leave as it was literally outside our window.
"Residents are fuming.
"People across the road have taken the coach driver's number plate details. He seemed to be clearing up rubbish as a result of complaints."
Another eyewitness saw the coach parked up on the A38 earlier on Saturday.
Some of the occupants appeared to be throwing rubbish over a hedge in a lay-by.

Ukraine put to shame as ugly mass street brawl between rivals hooligans unfolds in broad daylight
The Ukraine's reputation for football violence was once again damaged after a shocking video emerged showing a mass brawl between rival hooligans taking place in a high street during broad daylight.
It has been reported that the camera phone footage features Metalist Kharkiv ultras joining forces with Spartak Moscow fans (without shirts) to wage war on Dynamo Kiev hooligans.
As traffic trundles past, an orchestrated fight erupts when a mass of shirtless thugs corner a smaller group outside a shop front with blows and makeshift missiles raining down from every direction.
One floored male gets a particularly severe beating with several brutes jumping two-footed onto his head while other victims lay prostrate on the floor.
The brawl lasts for almost two minutes before riot police arrive to disperse the crowd, swinging batons at the shirtless hooligans who refuse to leave the scene and form another stand off that is separated by only a few policeman before both sides eventually flee.
The rivalry between between Spartak Moscow and Dynamo Kyev has always been intense and dates back to when both teams were the leading sides in the former Soviet Top League. Besides football competition the derby is also political as a part of Russian-Ukrainian relations, especially since 1991 when Ukraine became an independent state with its own football league.
It is the second time this month that football violence in the Ukraine has come under the spotlight after a group of England fans were attacked by knife wielding hoodies in the city centre ahead of a World Cup qualifier.
