Rome Derby 2013: Fans Reportedly Stabbed Before AS Roma vs. Lazio Match
Chaos erupted before a heated rivalry match between AS Roma and Lazio in Italy. At least two fans were injured and an emergency vehicle was attacked during a clash of supporters prior to the latest Rome derby, according to the Associated Press (via Yahoo! Sports):
The ANSA news agency reports an ambulance was abandoned after fireworks, rocks and sticks were thrown at it Monday.
After hearing of the news, Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno made an appeal for calm ahead of the match Monday night.
Matches between the two Rome-based clubs are among the most intense in Europe. The AP report states security was increased following the stabbing incident, and local businesses decided to close up shop before any more outbreaks of violence occurred.
Lazio and Roma are in close competition in the Serie A table, sitting in sixth and seventh place respectively. Both clubs are within striking distance of earning a European spot for next season, which helps explain the added tension ahead of today's clash.
It's the second act of violence ahead of a major football match in Rome in as many years. Premier League side Tottenham had 10 supporters suffer injuries in an attack before a Europa League encounter with Lazio, according to Reuters (via The Guardian).
There was also an incident in 2004 when supporters from both sides clashed with police after a match involving the two sides was postponed shortly after the second half began. A story on the confusion during that match from CNN also alluded to incidents before the match.
Violence associated with football isn't uncommon, as each of those situations illustrate. The good news is that it appears police were able to get today's situation under control relatively quickly, at least before the disorder led to even more injuries.
No further information was provided on the condition of the fans stabbed in today's attack.

Manchester police investigate alleged racial abuse of Vincent Kompany
• City's captain allegedly abused while giving interview • Manchester police made aware of footage on Sky TV
Greater Manchester police are studying TV footage of a post-match interview after Monday's Manchester derby following claims that the Manchester City captain, Vincent Kompany, was racially abused.
The comments under investigation could be heard while Kompany and his team-mate James Milner were being interviewed on Sky Sports following their 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.
"Greater Manchester police have not received a complaint about racist abuse directed towards any players following last night's fixture, however we have now been made aware of this footage by the Manchester Evening News," a police statement said. "The force will work with both clubs and review any footage to investigate the incident."
Neither City nor Kompany have made a complaint over the obscenity, which it is believed came from outside the tunnel area. The area was sealed off from public view by large metal gates, though it is not uncommon for supporters to yell abuse as they make their way past that part of the stadium, before barriers are erected to allow supporters to wait for players to emerge and for players' cars to be brought for them to leave.

England : Bradford man among 12 arrested over 'appalling' football violence - 09/04/2013
Source : http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk
A Bradford man is one of 12 arrested by police investigating an “appalling explosion of violence” following Leeds United’s FA Cup game against Tottenham Hotspur.
Around 40 Leeds and Spurs supporters clashed outside a Leeds city centre bar in January.
Officers arrested the men, aged 17 to 53, on Monday evening from addresses in Leeds, one in Bradford, three in South Yorkshire and one in North Yorkshire.
The fans gathered outside Yates’s Wine Lodge, in Boar Lane, at about 6pm on Sunday, January 27.
Officers from across the city were called to deal with the incident and had to form lines to clear those involved from the area.
Bottles were thrown at officers during the incident but none were injured.
Suspects and witnesses were identified from detailed analysis of CCTV footage from Leeds City Council’s Leedswatch system and from private security cameras in the area.
Chief Superintendent Paul Money, Divisional Commander for City & Holbeck, said: "This was an appalling explosion of violence in the heart of the city centre at tea-time on a Sunday and is obviously not something that we can ever tolerate.
As part of the investigation, detectives have released CCTV images of two men they want to trace in connection with the incident.

‘Heil Mou’ banner depicting Jose Mourinho and Hitler hung outside the Bernabeu
A bizarre poster depicting Adolf Hilter and Jose Mourinho on either side of the words "Heil Mou" and Real Madrid's logo was hung outside the Santiago Bernabeu prior to Real Madrid's match against Levante. It's unclear who put the banner up before Madrid's 5-1 win or what their motivation was.
That said, Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas once again did not play as Mourinho continues to favor Diego Lopez in goal. Of course, Casillas would never do that. But he has had a lot of free time...

UEFA punish Dynamo Kiev - 10/04/2013
Source : http://www.sportinglife.com
UEFA have ordered Dynamo Kiev to play their next two home matches in European competition behind closed doors due to two incidents of "racist conduct by their supporters" at the Olympic National Sports Complex.
The Ukraine club's fans are alleged to have behaved in a racist manner in Dynamo's Champions League clash with Paris St Germain in November last year and then again in the Europa League against Bordeaux in February.
And UEFA, whose general secretary Gianni Infantino has announced proposed sanctions of banning players for a minimum of 10 matches if they are found guilty of a racist offence, has taken a dim view of the fans' conduct although the club has lodged an appeal.
"FC Dynamo Kiev have been ordered to play their next two UEFA competition home matches behind closed doors due to racist conduct by supporters," said a statement on UEFA's official website.
"The first match behind closed doors applies to the next UEFA club competition match for which the club would qualify, while the sanction for the second match is deferred for a probationary period of three years.
"The Ukrainian club has lodged an appeal against this decision. The date of the UEFA Appeals Body hearing has yet to be decided."
Infantino also said there would be partial closure of stadiums for a first incident of racist abuse by fans and a full closure for a second offence.
The proposed sanctions would affect all matches in European competition.

Cyprus : Fifteen arrests for match hooliganism - 09/04/2013
Source : http://www.cyprus-mail.com
HOOLIGANISM reared its ugly head on Saturday, before, during and after the Omonia – APOEL match in Nicosia and the Anorthosis – AEK match in Larnaca as police arrested a total of 15 people. Before the Omonia – APOEL game which was due to start at 4.30pm, trouble started while APOEL fans were making their way into the GSP Stadium, with one fan and three police officers being injured. Police arrested one man to help their investigation into the incident. According to police, both sets of fans set off firecrackers and flares before and during the match. As the second half was about to get underway a section of fans from each team attempted to enter the moat which circles the stadium and throw objects at each other. In their attempts to prevent trouble escalating, the police used a limited amount of tear gas. After the match three more fans were arrested. One had a sharp object in his possession and the other two caused damage to a police vehicle with a flare. After the match at around 7pm, around 300 APOEL fans gathered outside the team’s clubhouse, throwing Molotov cocktails and stones, causing damage to passing cars. Two men, aged 21 and 23 were arrested there. Nicosia CID and Lykavitos Police Station are continuing their investigations. At the same time, Anorthosis and AEK were playing each other at the Antonis Papadopoulos stadium in Larnaca. During the match, fans from both teams threw objects and firecrackers at each other. Ten minutes after the match finished, a section of Anorthosis fans left the stadium, put hoods on and threateningly headed towards the stand where the AEK fans were, police said. Police cut them off but were hit with stones that the Anorthosis fans threw at them, resulting in one officer being injured. Following that, 100 Anorthosis fans went to their team’s training ground where they threw stones at around 12 cars according to police reports. Later on, a car with five AEK supporters was cut-off by three cars containing Anorthosis fans who attacked and injured them. Three men, aged 21, 20 and 18 were arrested during the early hours of Sunday and yesterday another six men were arrested to assist investigations. The six men were remanded in custody for three days. Police spokesman Andreas Angelides said that the police were continuing to look at evidence and information regarding incidents at both matches and will arrest more people if necessary.

Hundreds of Levski supporters were so disgusted by their second-placed side's performance that they set up a road blockade and tried to storm the club bus on the trip back to Sofia, asking for explanation for "the pitiful display".

Uruguay to tackle violence in football stadiums - 09/04/2013
Source : http://news.xinhuanet.com
Uruguay's Police announced it will submit a list of violent fans to the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) for the clubs to ban their entrance to stadiums, local press reported Tuesday.
"It is necessary to deprive them of the right to enter," said Sports Minister Liliam Kechichian, cited by local daily "La Republica" .
A security committee formed by the Uruguayan Interior and Sports Ministries met Monday with AUF and delegates from the soccer clubs to discuss about the measures against violence in stadiums.
"We will ask the clubs to appoint a person responsible for security and also to evaluate the consequences of not having the necessary conditions" to guarantee security, said Kechichian.
So far, the clubs delegated the security in the stadiums to their own groups of diehard fans called "barras bravas" .
Kechichian affirmed "if the teams do not appoint a person and there is nobody to talk with, the games could be played without the presence of the clubs' supporters."
The minister said "these 'barras bravas' should not exist anymore, we have to eliminate them."
Meanwhile, Jorge Vazquez, Interior Vice Minister, admitted that it is "difficult" for the clubs to ban the boisterous fans from the stadiums.
Violence among the barras bravas have occasionally affected the Uruguayan soccer, where five people have been killed in the last two decades.

Sweden : AIK Stockholm board 'infiltrated by hooligans' - 11/04/2013
Source : http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com
A Swedish television programme has alleged that the AIK Stockholm board has been infiltrated by members of the club's hooligan firm.
The hour-long 'Uppdrag Granskning' show said the 'Firman Boys' hooligan group had members on the board at the club but AIK chairman Johan Segui refuted the claims.
"As far as I know no-one on our current board is ex-Firman Boys because you can't be in Firman Boys and sit on the board," said Segui who is a former member of the Hell's Angels group.
Football in the otherwise-peaceful Scandinavian country has in recent years been blighted by matches abandoned due to crowd trouble.
Instead of taking a confrontational attitude, AIK has engaged in dialogue with various fan groups including the hooligan firm.
Violent supporters, who have been known to threaten and intimidate players, coaches and board members, began to make efforts to gain representation on the board in 2009, the programme said.
Former police chief Bjorn Eriksson, who recently completed a report on hooliganism for the government, said talking to troublemakers was admirable but allowing them to have influence could have negative consequences.
"It can be good but then we forget - these violent people have done many violent things to scare normal people," he told the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper.
AIK were held 0-0 at home by Syrianska on Sunday, their second successive draw at the start of the new season.

Paraguayan hooligans attack Argentine fans in Libertadores Cup
Paraguayan hooligans attacked several Argentine football fans who were being treated in a hospital in Paraguay's capital Asuncion for cuts and scrapes sustained during a regional tournament match.
The incident occurred Thursday following a Libertadores Cup game between Paraguayan team Olimpia and Argentine team Newell's, during which rocks and stones hailed on Newell's fans, reports Xinhua.
Local media reports Friday said about a dozen hooligans "armed with sticks and knives" burst into Asuncion's Emergency Medical Center Thursday night and attacked the Argentine fans, sending them running through the hospital hallways looking for cover.
The sole guard on duty was unable to control the situation, until police arrived at the scene several minutes later and arrested three of the hooligans, including a 19-year-old.

Scotland : Edinburgh derby day football hooligans arrested - 13/04/2013
Source : http://www.scotsman.com
FOOTBALL hooligans thought to be behind running street battles before an Edinburgh derby have been targeted in a string of police raids.
Teams of officers swooped yesterday seeking to arrest seven suspects accused of being ringleaders in violence which erupted near Tynecastle Stadium. The men were all alleged Hibs “casuals” wanted in connection with fights in Dalry Road before the January 3 match with Hearts.
The game itself was marred by ugly scenes inside the ground, including fans allegedly spitting into the face of a young ballboy and a flare being hurled which nearly struck a nine-year-old Hibs fan.
The crackdown was part of the city’s first Campaign Against Violence (CAV) Day which saw more than 60 extra officers, including senior police chiefs, hitting the streets. Officers visited addresses in Clermiston, Firrhill, Midlothian and East Lothian in an attempt to detain the suspects.
Four men had been arrested by yesterday evening, two aged 38, a 43-year-old and a 26-year-old, while officers continued attempts to trace the others.
Chief Inspector Mark Patterson, who led the operation, said: “The alleged offences related to general violence, disorder and assaults. We had good CCTV and witnesses from the scene and, combined with old-fashioned police work, we’ve been able to identify those allegedly involved.”
Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said the level of disorder witnessed at Tynecastle at the January match demonstrated a clear link between all-day drinking and widespread thuggery inside football grounds.
Mr MacAskill called for football chiefs to launch a review into late kick-off times which created the conditions for prolonged drinking and fuelled disorder.

Millwall Hooligans Clash With Fans and Police at Wembley FA Cup Semi-Final
Skirmishes between Millwall supporters erupted at Wembley today in the latter stages of the FA Cup semi-final between Wigan and Millwall.
TV footage and photographs showed small groups of Millwall supporters fighting between themselves near a corner of the ground. There were scenes of policemen trying to push fans back, while it appeared that some Millwall supporters jeered their own fans who were causing the hooliganism.
According to reports from the ground, there were 20 or more hooligans involved in the ruckus where punches were thrown. Millwall supporters reportedly also ripped up seats and threw them.
The Football Association will undoubtedly take action as a result of the violence today in the worst skirmishes seen at Wembley Stadium since the redeveloped ground opened.
Police were forced to intervene after bloody fighting broke out amongst a section of the London club's support, overshadowing Wigan's victory and progression to the final.
The FA Cup semi-final between Wigan and Millwall at Wembley has been tarnished by fighting and hooliganism by a small minority of fans from the London club.
The trouble had been brewing for much of the second half but intensified shortly after Latics attacker Callum McManaman handed Roberto Martinez’s side a two-goal lead with barely 10 minutes remaining in the match.
A small cluster of Millwall fans, a club notorious for its hooligan firms, began fighting between themselves, but the conflict quickly spread across the Millwall section of the stadium.
There were fists flying and bloodied faces in the crowd, with a general air of panic amongst the innocent bystanders trying to avoid the violence.
Police attempted to intervene and were met with vicious resistance, with riot helmets flung through the air.
The violence should be attributed to small minority of fans, with many Millwall supporters escaping the fighting before applauding their defeated side’s efforts at the end of the match.
But the scenes, the most bloodied in the short history of the new Wembley stadium, will sour an otherwise engaging and fairly contested on-field match which saw Wigan progress to the final of the FA Cup.
Afterwards Millwall manager Kenny Jackett told ESPN: "I didn't see or hear anything at all. It's the first I've heard of it and I didn't see anything. Nothing has been brought to my attention.
"I've come out straight after the game with the disappointment of a loss. I'd need all of the facts and need some time before I form an opinion."

Toon yobs throw bottles at Benfica coach
Police have condemned Newcastle United fans who attacked a coach carrying Benfica supporters
Newcastle fans attacked a Benfica supporters’ coach following the Magpies European exit.
The yobs, shrouded in the darkness of the St James’ Metro station car park, launched bottles at the London-bound bus, smashing a window.
The group then fled the scene, running off down Gallowgate with the Portuguese fans in pursuit.
Benfica fan Valta Lorento, 25, from Crawley, said the mindless violence marred what had otherwise been a nice visit to the North East.
“We didn’t even see the people who did this before the attack, let alone provoke them,” he said. “All we came to do was watch the game then make our long way home.
“The police wouldn’t escort us – they said we didn’t need it – but clearly that was not the case.”
Other fans aboard the coach suggested those responsible may have been trying to hit a Benfica flag they had pinned to a window, but were keen to stress they held no ill will against Newcastle United or the majority of Magpies supporters – many of whom were appalled by the attack when they stopped to speak to the passengers as they waited in the cold.
With his Benfica scarf wrapped around his face to protect against the North East night air, Joseph Abrino said: “I don’t think what they did should be associated with the club because it did so well and made us feel so welcome. It’s a shame the evening ended this way, but it won’t put me off coming back to the city.”
A spokesman for Northumbria Police said they were aware of the attack, which happened around 10.40pm, though no arrests had been made.
“The side window of a bus was shattered as it was on Barrack Road,” he said.
“Officers spoke to the driver and nobody aboard was injured.
“Investigations are ongoing to find who did this.”
The spokesman also said that decisions on whether to escort away coaches are made on a case-by-case basis, depending on the rivalry between fans.
