Bradford City - Aston Villa - 08/01/2013

Source : http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk

Bradford City fan claims he was headbutted ahead of Aston Villa clash

Police swarmed around The Queen pub in Bradford city centre at 6.30pm to deal with rowdy Aston Villa fans.

Known football hooligans were said to be among a group of about 80 surrounded by police outside the pub on Bridge Street.

One Bradford City fan claims he was headbutted by an Aston Villa fan when he went inside.

He said he was given a Section 27 order and told to get out of the city centre, while the person who assaulted him went unpunished.

Police escorted some of the Villa fans onto a waiting coach; others outside the pub were set to be escorted to Valley Parade by officers.

Bradford cab drivers bemoaned a hit to their business as Bridge Street was closed off at the junction with Hall Ings and cabs blocked from picking people up from Bradford Interchange. Buses were also re-routed.

Ref and assistants left 'barely conscious and bleeding' after player attack in Chile - 09/01/2013

Source : http://www.dailymail.co.uk

With football still reeling from the shocking death of a linesman in Holland last month, it seems the message of respect hasn't filtered down as far as Chile.
Footage has emerged from a regional game in the South American country which ended with sickening scenes of violence.
The match, a final between Baquedano and Pablo Lizama, was in extra time when chaos erupted after one player took particular exception to a decision. What followed will send shivers down the spines of officials everywhere.

After seemingly cooling tensions - with the help of some of the players - a fan broke onto the pitch and kicked out at the linesman. The referee was then set upon by those from Pablo Lizama after calling a halt to proceedings.
The melee, involving men and women, left the man in the middle barely conscious while his assistant suffered bleeding to the face and a few missing teeth.
Jorrit Smink, a former coach of the Melipilla Primera B side, told English news website, I Love Chile: 'Unfortunately football has too many players like this.
'The surprising thing is that the only people who work at FIFA are mafia types and complete idiots. That works from the top down.'
The incident was a reminder of the appalling story of Richard Nieuwenhuizen, a linesman who was beaten to death by three teens after a youth match in Holland.
The trio have been charged with manslaughter, assault and public violence after the atrocious attack that shocked the country.

Scotland : Hamilton Academical - Falkirk FC - 05/01/2013

Source : http://www.falkirkherald.co.uk

Bairns fans in street fight before match

Falkirk Football Club has pledged to take action against any Falkirk fans involved in a brawl before last Saturday’s match in Hamilton.

The incident saw a police helicopter hovering above the town’s New Douglas Park during the first half of the 1-1 draw.

Five males aged 21, 20, 19, 18 and 16 - reportedly Falkirk fans - were arrested, along with four Hamilton Academical supporters, after a scuffle broke out in John Street.

This morning, officers from the national Football Co-ordination Unit for Scotland arrested nine young men in the Falkirk area.

They were all aged 15 to 19 years.

These arrests followed a retrospective investigation carried out by FoCUS officers, who were assisted by colleagues from Central Scotland Police.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police confirmed the alleged incident involved fans from both clubs.

Falkirk FC general manager David White said: “The club don’t want anything to do with this kind of behaviour.

‘‘As far as I’m aware this incident happened outside the ground before the match.

“If the police do get back to us and confirm these people were in fact Falkirk fans then we will take action against them.

‘‘We can then give them a written warning or withdraw their season ticket - the action we take will depend on the seriousness of the offence.”

Six more held after clashes among Shrewsbury Town and Walsall fans - 11/01/2013

Source : http://www.shropshirestar.com

Six more people have been arrested in connection with the violence that marred Shrewsbury Town Football Club’s derby clash with rivals Walsall.

Police have arrested six men from the Shrewsbury area in connection with the trouble that occurred on October 14 in the town centre.

And officials have said further arrests were likely as investigations continue.

On the day of the match, 15 people from Shropshire and the West Midlands were arrested for a variety of offences.

Three police officers were injured, two of whom needed hospital treatment.

The majority were arrested for violent disorder in the Mardol area before the match as two large groups of opposing supporters were involved in a fight.

The fresh arrests come after CCTV footage was examined.

Sergeant Julie Shephard, who is leading the investigation, said: “As a result of our inquiries, a further five men have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and one on suspicion of encouraging a violent disorder.

“All six are from the Shrewsbury area.”

She said further arrests are likely, both in Shropshire and the Walsall area, as inquiries continue. “We are confident of being able to identify those who were involved in causing trouble on the day,” she added.

Other arrests on the day of the game related to minor public order offences, possession of drugs and criminal damage both inside and outside the stadium.

Then, supporters thrown rocks and one wounded a woman.
Journalists were also attacked so the referee decided to stop the game.

Aberdeen supporters banned from matches after Rangers clash - 15/01/2013

Source : http://news.stv.tv

Three Aberdeen fans have been banned from attending football matches after they were involved in a "violent disturbance" before a match with Rangers.

Stanley Thain, 47, and Ivan Bridge, 41, pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to forming part of a disorderly crowd, engaging in and challenging others to fight.

Gary Leys, 37, admitted an amended charge of shouting and swearing and repeatedly trying to breach a police cordon.

He was fined £550 in 2002 after he was caught on camera punching a 71-year-old Rangers supporter in the face at a football match in Aberdeen and breaching the peace.

Thain also has a previous conviction from 2001 at Dundee Sheriff Court when he was fined £150 for committing a breach of the peace at a football match.

Passing sentence on Tuesday sheriff Ian Miller handed each of the men orders with the condition they must carry out unpaid work in the community within nine months, as a direct alternative to custody. He also issued Football Banning Orders, of various lengths, to each of them.

Thain must carry out 270 hours and is banned for three years, Bridge must complete 215 hours of work and is banned for two years and Leys has to carry out 235 hours and is banned for two and a half years.

The sheriff described the incident as being a "charged atmosphere" that was "not helped by the consumption of alcohol".

The court was told the men were on their way to watch the Dons play at Ibrox Stadium on January 21, last year.

He said: "The three accused are Aberdeen supporters and in fact did attend the match after this incident."

The court heard that the fans as well as some Rangers fans got off the train at Ibrox underground and made their way up the stairs to Copland Road around 20 minutes before kick-off.

Mr Stewart said: "It was obvious from the CCTV and the police that some of the Aberdeen supporters were in an agitated state. Some of them were shouting and waving their hands."

CCTV footage of the mass brawl at the underground was played in court.

The prosecutor then described in turn what each of the accused's part in the incident was.

He said Thain, of Greig Court, Aberdeen, can be seen charging forward with numerous fans towards the Rangers supporters and lashing out.

He is described as "retreating" when the mounted branch of the police become involved.

Bridge, from West Kilbride, Ayrshire, was at the front of the crowd of fans engaging in a fight and lunging towards fans swinging his arms and also moved back when the police intervened.

Mr Stewart said Leys, of Newburgh Road, Aberdeen, walked up and down the police cordon and repeatedly tried to breach it and push his way past the officers. The fans were then escorted to the game by police.

Speaking following sentencing Joe Stewart, Football Liaison Prosecutor for the West of Scotland, said: "Behaviour such as this is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

"Innocent members of the public and ordinary, decent supporters were clearly alarmed as the fighting ensued. Thankfully the police officers who were nearby intervened promptly to break up the fighting otherwise the incident could have been much worse."

Carlisle United supporters praised after rival's fan banned - 16/01/2013

Source : http://www.newsandstar.co.uk

A man who ran onto the pitch during an MK Dons game against Carlisle last year has received a three-year banning order.

Yousef Ayub, 23, of Angus Drive, Bletchley, pleaded guilty to one count under section four of the Football Offences Act. He was also fined £85.

Ayub went onto the pitch on September 1, ran towards the Carlisle supporters, making offensive gestures towards them and exposed his backside.

He was detained by club stewards and subsequently arrested and charged.

PC James O’Brien said: “Thames Valley Police, working with MK Dons, bought this prosecution to show that supporters visiting stadiumMK that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated.

"The majority of the time the stadium is a safe and friendly environment and when individuals act in this manner they will be dealt with robustly.

“The restraint shown by the Carlisle United supporters at the time was greatly appreciated as it allowed stewards and police to concentrate fully on dealing with the offender.”

Dortmund fined 20,000 euros for fan trouble - 16/01/2013

Source : http://uk.reuters.com

Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund were fined 20,000 euros for fan trouble in two Bundesliga home games, the German football association (DFB) said on Wednesday.

Dortmund fans threw lighters and other objects onto the pitch in the league game against regional rivals Schalke 04 in October while Schalke goalkeeper Lars Unnerstall was hit in the back by a coin.

Fans also interrupted Dortmund's game against VfL Wolfsburg in December after throwing paper rolls onto the goal of the visiting team and forcing the referee to briefly stop play.

England : Fan banned over abuse allegation - 05/01/2013

Source : http://www.crawleyobserver.co.uk

Crawley Town Football Club has banned one of its supporters after fellow fans reported a match official had been racially abused.

Sussex Police is investigating the allegation which was made after the Reds’ League One game against Sheffield United at Broadfield Stadium on December 22.

Neither the official nor the referee’s assessor made a complaint on the day.

Crawley Town chief executive Richard Low said: “We are grateful to our supporters who made us aware of this unfortunate incident.

“The person concerned did subsequently come forward and has now been given a
ban from the Broadfield Stadium.

“The length of the ban will be ratified once the club has met with the police and our safety officer next week.

“Racism or discrimination of any sort at the Broadfield Stadium is not acceptable and anyone who besmirches our name as a family friendly football club in this way will be severely dealt with.

“The ban is a club directive. We will also be assisting Sussex Police in an ongoing investigation of this incident.”

A spokesman for Sussex Police confirmed that officers had been made aware of the comment after the match had finished.

He appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident or who had information about it to contact them.

Sergeant Darren Taylorsaid: “Incidents of this nature will not be tolerated and will be dealt with robustly.

“Unfortunately this incident was not brought to the attention of the police during the game, however, a full investigation will now be carried out.”

France : Bastia fans banned for three home matches - 11/01/2013

Source : http://www.sportsmole.co.uk

Bastia have been ordered to play a further three home games behind closed doors for failing to control their fans during a home match against Marseille.

It is the second ban that the French Football League's Disciplinary Commission (FFLDC) have handed the French Ligue 1 side this season.

The Corsican fans were hit with a two-game ban following an incident during the Coupe de la Ligue quarter-final with Lille on November 28, in which a linesman was struck with a coin and had to receive treatment.

He also claimed that he was racially abused by the crowd.

An empty Stade Armand Cesari greeted Les Phoceens for their visit on December 12 as a result, but fans gathered outside the stadium in allegedly violent protest as Elie Baup's men boarded their team bus after a 2-1 win in Corsica.

The FFLDC have now ruled that home fixtures with Rennes, Evian and Nice will be played in an empty stadium.

Bremen ban group of right-wing Dortmund fans - 16/01/2013

Source : http://www.sportlive.co.za

Werder Bremen have banned a group of eight Borussia Dortmund fans with links to right-wing politics ahead of Saturday’s home Bundesliga match against the German champions

In a statement, the group, who are all known to police, are banned from Werder’s Weser Stadion based “on previous experiences in Bremen”, and their unnamed ringleader already has a nationwide stadium ban.

“It’s one of the big goals for Werder Bremen to ban violence, as well as racist and extremist ideas, from our stadium,” said Werder director Klaus-Dieter Fischer ahead of Saturday night’s league match.

“For this reason, in close coordination with security authorities, we have banned eight people from Dortmund, who are clearly connected to the far right.”

According to the north German club, Dortmund fans have unfurled banners with right-wing content in previous matches between the teams. The banners have also been seen at other clubs around the country this season.

As of the start of the season, a ban was put in place at Werder’s Weser Stadion to exclude anyone seen spreading racist ideas.

England : South Yorkshire Police call for clubs to foot policing bill - 17/01/2013

Source : http://www.thestar.co.uk

A SOUTH Yorkshire Police chief has said football clubs should foot the bill for controlling unruly fans – after it was revealed arrests at Sheffield Wednesday’s ground were the highest in the region last season.

Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Andy Holt said clubs should pay for officers policing a ‘minority’ of misbehaving fans, taking them away from their usual crime-fighting duties.

Owls fans shared the top spot for arrests in 2011-12 with Championship rivals Leeds United.

Both clubs saw 62 supporters arrested on game days. Sheffield United fans came third, with 48 arrests.

DCC Holt, the Association of Chief Police Officers’ lead for football policing, said clubs pay for officers stationed in a designated area around stadiums.

The taxpayer then pays for police outside of the ‘agreed footprint’.

DCC Holt said: “Undoubtedly the way we would prefer it is if football matches were the same as rugby and cricket matches, which are largely police-free.

“We’re moving in that direction, with better stewarding, better CCTV and all-seater stadia.

“However, unfortunately at the moment there is still a minority who engage in violence and disorder.

“They ruin it for ordinary, decent spectators, who are the overwhelming majority.

“My argument would be football should pay for the policing of that minority who take officers away from preventing burglaries, car crime and all sorts of other things.”

DCC Holt said Leeds United Football Club recently took West Yorkshire Police to court, claiming the force was unlawfully charging them for its policing operation.

He said: “The judgement was very complex and some tricky arguments are going to be rehearsed once again.”

Football policing is now ‘more effective’ and fewer officers are needed today, he said, adding: “Although we see the number of arrests, what we should be looking at is the number of matches that are trouble-free.”

Should football clubs be forced to pay for policing outside the grounds?

Uefa fines Ajax over fan banners critical of money at Man City game - 18/01/2013

Source : http://www.guardian.co.uk/

• €10,000 fine imposed for signs shown at October match
• Banner showing sheikh said: 'Against Modern Football'

Not only are football fans having to absorb the enormous costs of the modern game, it seems they are now having to be told to keep their mouth shut about it too. Following on from the disquieting story of Manchester City supporters being warned by police to take down banners questioning the price of an away ticket at their recent match at Arsenal (a slogan with no swear words or severe antagonism, by the way), Uefa has fined Ajax €10,000 after their crowd displayed banners about the effects of mega-money in football.

During their Champions League match at home to Manchester City in October, Ajax fans unveiled a banner with the motto "Against Modern Football", beneath a cartoon of a sheik holding a bag embossed with a dollar sign, the image presented as a stop sign with a red line through it. Another slogan read "€80 for the away section is ridiculous", and there were banners with offensive messages aimed at Manchester City, Chelsea, Red Bull Salzburg and Red Bull Leipzig.

City are owned by Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed al-Nahyan, a member of Abu Dhabi's ruling family. Ajax, who last won the European Cup in 1995, have struggled to compete at the top level of the continental game since the arrival of heavy overseas investment at some of the wealthiest clubs in Europe.

Uefa's official stance was that the Dutch club was fined for "display of a provocative and inappropriate banner".

Uruguay bans football for 10 days after goalkeeper punches riot cop

Uruguayan Football Association president Sebastian Bauza announced the ban after the incident at the end of Wednesday's "clasico" between arch-rivals Penarol and Nacional at the Centenario.

A young man was also still in intensive care after being shot during fighting between the teams' rival hooligan gangs in a street close to the Centenario in Montevideo before kickoff.

"We have agreed (with the Interior ministry) that we have to take decisions and send out signals that there are limits that must be respected," Bauza told a news conference.

"The acts that occurred outside and inside the Centenario stadium must not be repeated," he said at Thursday's announcement of the ban.

Uruguay took the measure of banning football for 10 days after violence in and around a match between Penarol and Nacional, including Nacional goalkeeper Jorge Bava getting arrested for punching a riot cop in the face.

The riot police were protecting the referee from protesting Nacional players after the match ended, when Bava alleges he was hit by the cops' equipment. This prompted him to punch one of them in the face, and a judge watching the match on TV called the police precinct under the stadium and had Bava arrested. Seriously.

Bava spent a night in jail, but reportedly apologized for his actions.

Though it's only 10 days, the country's timeout from football is an interesting gesture. Could this be what other places with football violence issues need to put things in perspective? At the very least, Bava's punch proves that goalkeepers really are insane.
