Cyprus: Omonia Nicosia - APOEL Nicosia - 11/12/2011

Source : http://www.cyprus-mail.com/football/shoppers-aghast-football-violence/20111213

Shoppers aghast at football violence

A MAJOR shopping street in Nicosia was brought to a standstill on Sunday when violent clashes broke out before the start of a football match between APOEL and Omonia.
Police said they had arrested eight youths aged between 15 and 25 in connection with the numerous scuffles on the streets of Nicosia before the match and outside the stadium before and after the match.
They face charges of rioting, assault and the illegal possession of a dangerous instrument and firecrackers.
According to the police, approximately 100 fans from both teams gathered outside the Lycavitos police station in central Nicosia prior to the match, exchanging blows and spraying graffiti on different buildings.
According to eyewitnesses, Makarios Avenue and near by streets were cut off by parked cars and scooters and fans who were marching en route to the stadium.
“Some of the fans were removing the pavement tiles and smashing them in pieces so they could hurl them towards opposing fans,” said an eyewitness.
“They even kicked someone off his scooter and started hitting it with steel bars,” said another.
Two 16-year-olds and a 20-year-old were arrested after a police found a firecracker and a knife in their car.
Police also arrested five fans in the stands for possessing firecrackers and for their participation in the scuffles outside the stadium, where a total of seven people suffered head injuries from the hurling of stones and other objects.
Police spokesman Michalis Katsounotos said that the force had intervened promptly and decisively to facilitate the swift departure of fans from around the stadium, successfully avoiding any extensive scuffles.
“Violent behaviour was observed by both sets of fans and it does seem as though these people never learn,” said Katsounotos.
Meanwhile, a small bus carrying APOEL fans was attacked with steel bars and stones in Paphos, although no one was injured.
The match ended with a 3-1 win for APOEL, with Omonia expressing serious complaints about the performance of the referee.
The police hierarchy had met representatives of both clubs on Friday before the match and they had all called on the fans to avoid any violent altercations.

Swiss club Grasshoppers to exclude hooligan fans - 12/12/2011

Source : http://www.greenwichtime.com/sports/article/Swiss-club-Grasshoppers-to-exclude-hooligan-fans-2397210.php

Swiss club Grasshoppers has pledged to shut a section of its home stadium for one game after another incident in a season marred by hooligans.
Fans lit flares during an away match at Lausanne-Sport on Sunday, then ignored a request to stop from club president Roland Leutwiler broadcast over the stadium loudspeakers.
Leutwiler responded Monday by promising to fulfill his threat to close a popular section of the team's Letzigrund stadium for a future match.
Leutwiler was quoted by broadcaster Radio 24 saying: "We should speak to the fans in a language they understand."
In October, fighting between Grasshoppers and FC Zurich fans forced a city derby match to be abandoned. Grasshoppers was awarded a 3-0 victory.
Grasshoppers is ninth in the 10-team Swiss League.

UEFA fines Celtic €15,000 for pro-IRA songs - 12/12/2011

Source : http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/soccer/wires/12/12/2080.ap.soc.uefa.celtic.fined.0127/index.html#ixzz1gLFBiu8M

UEFA has fined Scottish club Celtic ?15,000 ($19,877) after its supporters sang Irish political songs during a Nov.3 Europa League match against Rennes.
UEFA's control and disciplinary panel fined the Glasgow club after the body's match delegate was informed of what it called "illicit chanting'' by a Scottish police official.
Celtic was fined over pro-Irish Republican Army songs. Celtic traditionally draws support from Catholics and those in favor of Irish independence.
The club escaped punishment from the Scottish Premier League following an investigation into the singing of the same songs by a section of the club's fans in October.
Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell used October's annual club meeting to ask fans to stop the songs.

Northern Ireland: Cliftonville FC - FC Coleraine - 12/12/2011

Source : http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-16174333

Youth arrested over assault at Cliftonville match

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with an assault at Solitude Football Ground in Belfast on Tuesday.

A Coleraine FC player was punched at the north Belfast ground after scoring the winning goal in a cup semi-final.

Johnny Black was punched after fans of Cliftonville FC ran onto the pitch at the final whistle of the game at their home ground.

The youth was released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Coleraine had just won the match 2-1 in extra-time to go through to the League Cup final.

Mr Black said: "I was just walking off to the tunnel and saw someone coming out of the corner of my eye and I got punched in the mouth," he added.

Calm restored
"There is no place in football for that kind of stuff."

There were also skirmishes between a small number of Cliftonville FC supporters and stewards before calm was restored.

Cliftonville said it would be investigating the incident.

Sports Minister Caral Ni Chuilin condemned the incident and said it was regrettable that it had marred the game, "especially after Cliftonville had received so much positive publicity with their magnificent run of 14 victories and recent trophy win".

"I have every confidence that Cliftonville FC will investigate the matter fully and take the appropriate action," she said.

"I'm also sure Cliftonville will return to making the headlines for all the right reasons in what has been a great season so far."

'Tarnish club'
In a statement on Tuesday, the club said it would look closely at the events and would, with the help of the IFA, take appropriate action in addressing any issues arising from its investigation.

"Cliftonville Football Club wishes to condemn any persons involved in actions that tarnish our club," the statement said.

"Numerous people work tirelessly for the good of our club as volunteers, both on match days and throughout the season, and such incidents are not a just reward for their efforts nor for supporters, or indeed players."

Coleraine manager Oran Kearney praised the actions of the Cliftonville stewards in dealing with the trouble.

"It is by no means the fault of Cliftonville, that could have happened at our ground," he said.

"It is as simple as that, when emotions run high at the end of games you can't legislate for every single person that walks into your ground.

"In no shape or form would we blame Cliftonville, I think their stewards did a great job trying to get people off the pitch."

Cliftonville's defeat brought their run of 14 successive victories to an end.

Coleraine play Cliftonville again on Saturday in a Premier Division match at Solitude.

Argentine soccer gangs' growing clout - 14/12/2011

Source : http://www.aljazeera.com/news/americas/2011/12/2011121472044865172.html

Argentine authorities are struggling to break the increasing influence of "Barras Bravas" hooligans.

Argentine hooligans, known as Barras Bravas, have been blamed for many deaths and injuries in a succession of incidents of football-related violence in recent years.

At least 14 people have been killed and hundreds of others injured in fights between rival fan groups in just the last year and a half.

And with rival gangs at major clubs such as Boca Juniors fighting among themselves for control over activities such as control of the sale of merchandise outside stadiums, ticket sales and even alleged cuts of player transfer fees, authorities are struggling to break the power of the gangs.

Teresa Bo reports from Buenos Aires.

Universidad de Chile - Liga Quito - Copa Sudamericana - 14/12/2011

Source : Associated Press

Rioting Universidad fans attack buses in Santiago

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Police in Chile say 217 people have been detained for rioting as thousands of Universidad de Chile fans spent Wednesday night celebrating the club's Copa Sudamericana victory.

Police in Santiago say 151 public transport buses were attacked by fans and 18 drivers were injured.

Anti-riot squads used water cannons and tear gas to control the disorder and try to disperse fans.

The Copa Sudamericana is South America's second most important club competition after the Copa Libertadores.

Universidad beat Liga de Quito 4-0 in the two-legged final. The title is the first international trophy won by Universidad, the second most popular club in Chile, after Colo Colo.

Besiktas - Stoke City - 14/12/2011

Source : http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/16191283.stm

Stoke rule out complaint over Besiktas missile incidents

Stoke players were pelted with objects during the Europa League defeat at Besiktas, but manager Tony Pulis says they will not complain to Uefa.

Goalscorer Ricardo Fuller and winger Jermaine Pennant, as he prepared to take a corner, had items directed at them inside the Inonu Stadium.

"We won't be complaining to anyone. We're Stoke and we don't complain," said manager Tony Pulis.

Pennant added: "I was getting pelted with everything - lighters, coins."

He continued: "I didn't want to take [the corner] because every second I could see things flying past me.

"Until that stopped, I didn't feel comfortable taking the corner and then obviously the referee called me away.

"I've played here before so I know what the atmosphere's like," added Pennant, who came on as a first-half substitute for the injured Andy Wilkinson.

Despite the defeat, Stoke progressed to the last 32 of the competition having sealed their berth in the previous round of Group E games.

They went ahead through Fuller before Besiktas equalised from the spot after Hugo Almeida was brought down in the area by stand-in captain Matthew Upson, who was sent off for the foul.

Goals from Mustafa Pektemek and Edu gave the Turkish side a victory that put them through to the knockout stages as group winners.

"They had a lot of possession and a lot of creativity but with 11 men we were holding on," said Pennant.

"The penalty and going down to 10 men just put us right on the back foot and they got hold of the game."

Pulis, who began with an entirely changed starting XI from the one that kicked off against Tottenham on Sunday, chose not to dwell on the defeat.

"We've finished above Kiev and we've given Besiktas two very good games, especially when it was 11 against 11," said the Welshman.

"Every one of the players who played today has done absolutely fantastically for us and even when we went down to 10 men they just kept working.

"I was told it was going to be an interesting trip coming to Turkey, and it's certainly been that. This is all new to me.

"I was told I would experience different things and I have, but I thought the players handled it well."

Police charge Ipswich man with assault of Norwich City supporter - 15/12/2011

Source : http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/crime/police_charge_ipswich_man_with_assault_of_norwich_city_supporter_1_1154826

An Ipswich man has been charged with assaulting a Norwich City supporter at London’s Liverpool Street Train Station in October.

Police were called to platform 10 of the station at around 7.20pm on Saturday, October 29 - when Ipswich Town had been playing in London, against Millwall - after reports that a man had been attacked.

Officers discovered a 19-year-old victim had been assaulted. A man they believed to be a rival football fan was arrested and has now charged.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: “I can confirm that Adrian Taylor (45) of Pine Croft Road, Ipswich, has been charged with common assault. This relates to an incident at Liverpool Street station on 29 October 2011.

“Taylor will next appear at the City of London Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 11 January.”

Manchester United fan banned for three years after throwing lager at Valencia fans - 15/12/2011

Source : http://menmedia.co.uk/manchestereveningnews/news/s/1468050_manchester-united-fan-banned-for-three-years-after-throwing-lager-at-valencia-fans

A Manchester United fan who hurled a pint of lager over opposition fans in Spain before swinging punches has been banned from all football matches.

Thomas Hagan, 39, was slapped with a court order after admitting to a judge he had never bought a ticket legitimately through the club.

It means Hagan cannot go to any football fixture across the Britain for three years and must surrender his passport before his team play abroad.

Manchester magistrates heard that Hagan had drunk seven pints before he attacked a fan during United’s Champions League clash with Valencia in Spain last year.

He hurled the beer from his plastic pint into a crowd of Spanish fans before running across the road and punching one, the court heard.

Hagan, of Hurst Avenue, Sale, admitted throwing the lager, but said it was in retaliation after opposition supporters threw a road sign towards him. He denied punching anyone, but District Judge Jonathan Taaffe found the case against him proven.

Hagan, giving evidence in his defence, told prosecutors he bought his Valencia ticket ‘off a friend’.

Tom Gilbart, prosecuting, asked him: “Have you ever obtained a ticket for a Manchester United game through legitimate means?”

Hagan replied: “No.”

Mr Gilbart told the court: “He [Hagan] was witnessed attacking opposition supporters. Officers were quite clear. He wasn’t defending himself.”

But Jason Smith, defending, said: “We are dealing with what’s a very isolated incident that took place in seconds. This wasn’t a man hell-bent on attacking Valencia fans for no reason. He had something thrown towards him and he reacted – perhaps over-reacted.”

Mr Smith added that since the incident in Valencia, Hagan had never been arrested or charged for incidents at football matches.

Judge Taaffe said: “What concerns me is that he obtains tickets through unofficial channels.”

England: Prison for yob fans in pub clash - 13/12/2011

Source : http://www.expressandstar.com/news/2011/12/13/prison-for-yob-fans-in-pub-clash/

Seven Albion football thugs who clashed with rival Wolves supporters and police at a Black Country pub were today each beginning 16-month jail sentences.

Glasses, stools and beer barrels were used as “missiles” whenthe two groups of football fans brawled at the Tamebridge pub in Great Bridge following a league local derby.

Customers with young children and babies feared for their safety while police used specialist safety helmets to protect themselves, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

Judge Michael Challinor said yesterday he was convinced the yobs had gone to the pub expecting trouble.

The court has heard how violence flared followed the match on February 20, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

At about 5pm, five Wolves fans walked into the pub and started chanting towards a group of Albion supporters.

They retaliated by launching glasses and stools like “missiles” towards the Wolves group and forced them out of the pub, said prosecutor Miss Madhu Rai.

The Albion fans moved to the beer garden when police arrived, with some throwing whatever they could at officers. The court heard Stephen Whitehouse, 37, of Birchfield Way, Yew Tree, a “main aggressor”.

Shaun Bennett, 33, of Fountain Lane, Coseley, and Stephen Cox, 34, of Whitley Crescent, Rowley Regis, threw items.
James Wiles, 24, of Broadwaters Road, Darlaston, and Jason Harris 40, of Abbey Close, Tantany, West Bromwich threw objects while Neil Sutera, 34, of Radford Lane, Castlecroft, Wolverhampton, was also involved in the scuffle. Ricky Wright, 30 of Arthur Street, West Bromwich, threw punches. All admitted affray and were jailed.

Nathan Painter, 22 of Moxley Road, Darlaston, was seen “striking out”. He got an 18-month community order and a £1,000 fine.

Scotland: Nine men arrested after alleged riot before football match - 16/12/2011

Source : http://news.stv.tv/scotland/east-central/288401-nine-men-arrested-after-alleged-riot-before-football-match/

A group of fans are said to have been involved in disorder in Dunfermline town centre before the game.

Nine men have been arrested after an alleged violent riot before a football match.

A group of fans are said to have been involved in disorder in Dunfermline town centre as they made their way to the Dunfermline versus Dundee United match at East End Park on October 29.

On Friday, nine fans, aged between 19 and 43, were arrested in Dundee and the surrounding areas and charged with mobbing and rioting.

They are due to appear at Dunfermline Sheriff Court on Monday.

The arrests are the result of a joint operation between Fife Constabulary and Tayside Police.

Detective Inspector David Russell from Fife Constabulary said: "Following the unacceptable conduct of a group intent on causing football related disorder, officers from Fife Constabulary have worked closely with colleagues throughout Scotland to ensure that those considered responsible are identified and brought before the courts.

"Earlier this morning a joint operation involving officers from Fife Constabulary, Tayside Police, British Transport Police and FoCUS nine individuals were arrested. They are expected to appear at Dunfermline Sheriff Court early next week. We will continue to work closely with FoCUS and other forces to attempt to rid football of this type of violent behaviour."

Chief Inspector Shaun McKillop from said: "Tayside Police are committed to working with colleagues across the country to identify and apprehend those involved in football related violence. No community should tolerate this type of violent behaviour and we will continue to work with communities and football clubs to ensure that attending a football match remains a safe and enjoyable experience."

Argentina: Schiavi spoke about his relationship with the hooligans - 17/12/2011

Source : http://m24digital.com/en/2011/12/17/schiavi-spoke-about-his-relationship-with-the-hooligans/

The defender of Boca Rolando Schiavi spoke about the relationship between hooligans and the team and also about his future.
He spoke to a sports program, where Schiavi said about the relationship with the fans and particularly with the hooligans that “you can hear them, but you could not talk with them on the phone or have a relationship” because “ it is not good to listen because then you cannot stop them, but sometimes as captain you have to hear all the fans”.
On the internal fight in Boca between hooligans, among the group headed by Mauro Martin and the one of Di Zeo, he said “I do not like what happened as a fan, I do not think they wanted to suspend the stadium for his fight, we are all Boca fans and that’s before their personally”.

Police in Cali have arrested 66 people after the relegation of soccer giant America caused riots in Colombia's third largest city, local media reported.

The riots broke out both inside the stadium as in other parts of the city after America's 3-4 loss against second division team Patriotas, who will be promoted to the first division of Colombia's Liga Postobon.

Twelve people were injured in the riots.

America de Cali is officially Colombia's best-performing team ever, but will play in the country's second division after losing in the two-legged play-offs against Patriotas, a team from the small town of Tunja.

Football fans have wreaked havoc in the city of Cali in Colombia after their team was relegated to the second division of the national league.

The riots began after America de Cali lost 3-4 against Tunja's Patriotas.

Fans took to the field and tried to attack the players. They also tried to break into the team's locker rooms.

Police say a small incendiary was thrown into the crowd, injuring five people. Others were beaten and attacked with knives.

12 people were injured, with rioters damaging several stores and 160 cars. At least 66 people have been arrested.

America de Cali is one of Colombia's most prestigious clubs, having won the title 13 times and reached the final of the Libertadores Cup four times.

Azerbaijan:Detained teenage football fans molested in SSF Intelligence detention center - 19/12/2011

Source : http://www.freedomessenger.com/archives/44726

According to reports from local Azarbaijani media, in the past few months a number of young detainees were sexually abused in Tabriz.

According to Sana News two teenagers who were arrested during the Tabriz football game were sexually abused by the personnel of the Tabriz SSF Intelligence Agency.

According to the statements of these two 16 and 17 year old boys, who asked not to be identified because of the consequences of their revelation, after being arrested in the Imam Stadium in Tabriz, they were taken to the Tabriz State Security Forces Intelligence Department in Saeb Street. They were blindfolded and after being subjected to torture, agents of the Intelligence Agency touched various parts of their body and molested them.

According to this report, in light of the widespread arrests of the spectators in the stadium, there is probability that this treatment has happened many times more in the past few months with younger detainees who have stayed quiet out of fear of losing their honor.

Notably, these measures and similar instances also reportedly happened to Azari activists and detainees in the past few years in the Revolutionary Guards Corps Intelligence Agency. (Student Committee in Defense of Political Prisoners – Dec. 14, 2011)

Celtic back in the dock as UEFA charge club over fans behaviour at Udinese - 19/12/2011

Source : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2076073/Celtic-face-UEFA-charge-fans-Udinese.html

Celtic face their second UEFA disciplinary case in two months after being charged in relation to two offences during their Europa League game against Udinese in Italy.
UEFA confirmed they had opened disciplinary proceedings against Celtic, charging the Glasgow club with 'the displaying of a banner of an offensive nature and the setting off of fireworks by supporters'.
The case will be heard by the UEFA's control and disciplinary body on January 26.

Some Celtic fans held aloft a two-part banner which insulted UEFA, days after the club were fined about £12,700 for 'illicit chanting' involving pro-IRA songs at a Europa League game against Rennes at Celtic Park.
Several flares were also let off and one was thrown on to the pitch-side track as Celtic exited the tournament with a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Friuli last Thursday night.
Celtic have already banned for life one fan who was arrested in Italy over the alleged assault of a club steward, and who they say was one of those responsible for the banner.
Celtic manager Neil Lennon and chief executive Peter Lawwell hit out out at the 'rogue' element within their support on the day after the game.

The club also vowed to sift through photographic evidence to find those fans responsible for the use of the flares, warning that they will take 'appropriate action'.
Lawwell said: 'It is very frustrating. Those people are not Celtic supporters.
'We will weed them out and these guys will not get back into Celtic Football Club.
'One or two silly little juvenile boys doing funny kids' pranks and stuff and it is bringing the whole of Scottish football down.'
Lennon added: 'My only surprise is that they got the spelling (on the banner) right.
'I am very disappointed, they have let me down, they have let the board, players and background staff down and 99.9% of the support down.'
