Blackpool F.C. - Bolton - 14/05/2011

Source : Theboltonnews.co.uk

Fans clash after derby defeat for Wanderers

POLICE in riot gear had to remove a group of 60 Bolton fans from a pub after trouble flared in Blackpool town centre after Saturday’s derby match.

The supporters were asked to leave Molloy’s pub in Blackpool because of fears they may clash with rival fans nearby.

The group had earlier been caught trying to evade police by getting off their train early to avoid the pre-planned safe route.

Eyewitness Alyssa Hinchcliffe, an assistant in a nearby betting shop, said: “I saw one riot van, then another and another until there was five on the street.

“I saw two policemen with cuts on their faces before they all went back to their vans to get their helmets and shields.”

The police were originally called to Molloy’s to diffuse the brawl but had to leave when bottles were thrown.

Officers donned riot gear to deal with the troublemakers, and three officers received minor injuries.

Some neighbouring shops had to close their doors while police brought the situation under control.

The group was later safely escorted from the pub to the train station and sent back to Bolton.

Another witness, Gordon McCallum, from Blackpool, said: “I was terrified and people were flying about everywhere.

“They surrounded the pub completely for 30 minutes and at one point there were 40 police there.

“It was absolute chaos.”

The road was closed for half an hour until order was restored.

Bolton football intelligence officer PC Adie Ollerton said: “Our spotters worked really well to identify this group and the problems were then dealt with by police.

“The fans were escorted out of the pub and to the train station for their own safety.”

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “There were about 40 Bolton fans that we thought were causing problems in this pub. Three people were arrested on public order offences and everyone else was escorted to the train station.”

Football fan in Colombia gets 33-year sentence for killing rival supporter in hooligan brawl - 13/05/2011

Source : Washingtonpost.com

A football fan who stabbed a rival supporter to death during a battle between opposing hooligan groups has received a 33-year prison sentence.

The sentence by a Bogota court Friday is the most severe punishment ever handed down for hooligan violence in Colombia.

Miguel Angel Osorio was accused of stabbing Jeider Johan Fonseca during a brawl in a Bogota cafe between rival groups from the Santa Fe and Millionarios clubs in September 2009.

Although Osorio was tried under existing statutes, the sentence coincides with the recent approval of a “football law” that cracks down on soccer-related violence.

Brawls between hooligan groups are common in Colombia, often taking place far from stadiums and even when there is no match being played.

Omonia Nicosia - Apollon Limassol - Cyprus cup final - 18/05/2011

Source : Ahram Online + Sigmalive.com

Cyprus's football cup final was marred by violence, with 18 fans arrested before and after Omonia Nicosia won in a penalty shootout against Limassol's Apollon FC, police said on Thursday

Most of the arrests took place in Nicosia Wednesday night, when Omonia fans took to the streets of the capital to celebrate a 13th cup title for the island's best-supported club.
Five people were arrested outside the police station in Nicosia's downtown Lykavitos district when a crowd with fireworks and flares blocked a main intersection, hurled objects at police and set fire to rubbish bins, police spokesman Michalis Katsounotos said.

Another six were arrested on suspicion of stealing a car and possessing offensive weapons.

The main streets of downtown Nicosia were clogged with honking cars, trucks and even a front-end loader packed with cheering, flag-waving fans.

Katsounotos said that at around 11:00 pm, about 500 hooded hooligans -- some wearing Omonia shirts and scarves and carrying clubs and Molotov cocktails -- rampaged through the garden of a bar attacking customers.

Five people were hurt, but it was not clear if they were all patrons of the bar.

Another four people were arrested before the closely fought final staged in Larnaca, where the GSZ stadium suffered damage, and another fan immediately afterwards.

Details were not immediately available on the other arrests.

This is not the first time a big football occasion has been spoiled by hooliganism, which has become a common feature of Cyprus sporting events.

England : Hooligans' three-year bans from games - 19/05/2011

Source : Derbytelegraph.Co.Uk

A DERBY County fan who helped organise fights with rival supporters has been banned from matches for three years.

Alexander Dunn, 18, appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court yesterday, where he was given the football banning order along with another man, Ryan Martin, 19.

Police say they are both members of a Derby County hooligan fringe group known as the Derby Youth Connection.

The court heard that, over the past two years, they had been involved in a number of incidents with rival fans after matches and at Derby railway station.

The banning order, which lasts for three years, forbids the pair from attending any regulated football matches in England and Wales.

It also bans them from going inside an exclusion zone, which includes Pride Park stadium, the railway station and the bus station, for four hours before and six hours after any Derby County home match.

In addition, they are banned from entering any town or city where Derby are playing away matches and must surrender their passports when the national team has a game.

The pair, who chose to represent themselves in court, did not oppose the order.

Caroline Sellars, for Derbyshire police, told the court that both men had been identified as "risk supporters".

She said: "It refers to somebody who is a person who could be regarded as a posing a risk to public order or anti-social behaviour."

Ms Sellars said both men also "attached" themselves to other "risk supporters".

She then told the court about a series of incidents they had been involved in.

Ms Sellars said that in August 2008, Dunn, of Alvaston, was seen "with injuries" after a fight had broken out between Rams and Bristol City supporters.

Then, on March 27, 2010, Dunn was arrested in connection with a pre-arranged fight with Leicester City fans, during which missiles were thrown.

Ms Sellars said: "He [Dunn] was not seen throwing missiles but he admitted that he had been involved in a fight to defend someone."

On August 7, 2010, after a match between Leeds and Derby, Ms Sellars said Dunn was among fans who were "goading" each other, shouting and trying to get through police barriers "to engage in disorder and violence".

She said Dunn was also involved in disorder at Derby train station with Crewe and Portsmouth fans.

On January 2, 2010, she said Dunn was "instrumental" in contacting the Millwall risk group to arrange a meeting "purely for the purpose of fighting".

She said on this occasion some fans were carrying weapons and arrests were made. Ms Sellars said Dunn was also present when there was disorder between Derby County and Coventry City fans on February 27.

Ms Sellars said Martin, of Alfreton, was involved in disorder with Forest fans on August 29, 2009.

On March 27, 2010, Martin was arrested in connection with a fight with Leicester fans but was later released without charge.

Martin was then involved in a meeting between groups of Leeds United and Derby County "risk supporters" on August 7, 2010.

And on January 22 this year, he was involved in disorder involving Forest and Derby "risk supporters".

In February, he was involved in disorder after an Alfreton Town match.

England : Dozen Burnley 'Suicide Squad' hooligans to appeal sentences - 17/05/2011

Source : Thisislancashire.co.uk

A DOZEN members of infamous Burnley hooligan firm the Suicide Squad are set to appeal against sentences for violence after a Premier League clash with Blackburn Rovers.

Ringleaders Andrew Porter, Daniel Tempest, Paul Hartley and Mark Hamer are among those asking law lords for more lenient sentences over the October 2009 confrontation.

The quartet led a mob of ‘roaring, screaming and grunting’ Clarets fans towards rival Rovers supporters outside the Cherry Tree pub in Blackburn.

But police managed to intercept the two sides and prevented a mass brawl, in the wake of the East Lancs derby clash at Ewood Park.

Nearly 50 people were arrested during a five-month long inquiry and mobile phone records and CCTV footage was seized as evidence. Four crown court trials heard evidence that there had been a planned confrontation between the Suicide Squad and ‘Blackburn Youth’.

Porter, 44, of Parliament Street, Burnley, never even made it to the pub after his taxi got lost.

He was jailed for five years and banned from football grounds for 10 years.

Hartley, 26, of Church Street, Burnley, was jailed for four years and also banned from grounds for a decade.

Tempest, 27, of Mitton Grove, and Hamer, 28, of Olivant Street, both Burnley, were jailed for 50 months and 44 months respectively and issued bans.

Thomas McDonough, 23, of Valley Road, Barnoldswick, Stuart Craig, 23, of Haverholt Close, Colne, Ian Grice, 37, of Herbert Street, Padiham, Scott Page, 26, of Huntroyde Close, Burnley, Joshua Gornall, 22, of Northview, Eastburn, near Keighley, and Sean Widdop, 24, of Hornbeam Way, Manchester, were also convicted.

They received jail terms ranging from three-and-a-half years down to 21 months and banning orders of between seven and eight years.

The length of sentences imposed on all 12 by Judge Graham Knowles QC last January are being challenged at the Court of Appeal in London on Thursday.

Aston Villa and Birmingham City football hooligans jailed for mass battles - 21/05/2011

Source : http://www.birminghammail.net

NINE Aston Villa and Birmingham City fans have been jailed after taking part in mass battles after a derby game when police were pelted with bricks and bottles.

Birmingham Crown Court heard trouble was brewing before the match on October 31, but serious violence started after the match when missiles were thrown and a series of fights broke out.

Prosecuting, Miss Madhu Rai, told the court police tried to separate the fans by making them walk down separate sides of Witton Lane.

But fighting began along the road as fans continued to taunt each other. Villa fans later targeted police in Aston Lane, throwing broken bricks, bottles and coins, hitting cars and police officers, the court was told.

Sentencing the two Blues fans and seven Villa supporters, Mr Recorder Richard Bond said: “You may think that you were fighting for the honour of your club but nothing could be further from the truth.

“When people attend football matches they must realise that if they are involved in unlawful violence an immediate custodial sentence will follow.”

All nine were charged with violent disorder.

Villa fan Sean Wale, aged 28, of Green Lane, Small Heath, was described as a “leading light” who “used more violence than anyone else”. He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment.

Douglas Patterson, a 19-year-old Villa fan, of Wickmore Grove, Kingstanding, who was “clearly looking for trouble” was sentenced to ten months detention in a young offenders institute. The court heard he deliberately picked up a missile and threw it into the crowd.

Villa fan Sean Jenkins, aged 23, of Wood End Road, Erdington, was seen playing a key role in “actively encouraging people to get involved”. He was sentenced to seven months imprisonment.

Martin Smith, aged 41, of Willow Close, Bromsgrove, was seen “gloating” after kicking a man lying on the floor three times. The Villa fan was sentenced to eight months imprisonment.

Former Birmingham City chef Karl Dudley, aged 45, of Perch Avenue, Chelmsley Wood was one of the first Blues fans to cross over the police line. He was sentenced to eight months imprisonment.

Blues fan Graham Burden, aged 36, of Severne Road, Acocks Green, who was seen “spoiling for a fight” was also sentenced to eight months imprisonment.

Villa fan Matthew Whiting, 19, of Elmbridge Road, Kingstanding, was “deliberately obstructive to the police”. He was sentenced to eight months in a young offenders institute.

Villa fan Paul Dunn, aged 25, of Oxford Road, Moseley, threw three missiles at police. He was sentenced to eight months imprisonment.

Gary Smith, aged 35, of Appleton Avenue, Great Barr, and a Villa season ticket holder for 20 years, was sentenced to six months imprisonment. The court heard he was drunk at the time.

All were given a six year football banning order.

Sergeant Gareth Mason from the Force Football Unit said: “Disorder of this kind places decent and genuine football fans and other members of the community in extremely dangerous and uninvited situations. These nine men have today learnt how seriously their violent conduct has been viewed by the courts.”

3 Polish fans turn themselves into police - 22/05/2011

Source : Kyivpost.com

Three Polish hooligans have reportedly turned themselves into police on Wednesday after pictures of 51 troublemakers were posted on the Internet as part of a crackdown on stadium violence ahead of the 2012 European Championship.

TVN24 channel said six people in total have been identified from numerous phone calls and e-mails following the police initiative.

Acting on a prosecutor's decision, police posted photos of 51 people on Tuesday who were involved in a riot following the Poland Cup final in Bydgoszcz two weeks ago. They said the photos were taken before and during the match.

The aim is to publicly identify the troublemakers and signal that violence in stadiums will not be tolerated.

Poland is the co-host of Euro 2012 along with Ukraine but is under pressure to prove it can eradicate fan violence. Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned last week that Poland may not host the event unless authorities and football clubs ensure the safety of supporters in stadiums.

England : Five in court over Exeter City v Plymouth Argyle football violence - 20/05/2011

Source : Thisisexeter.co.uk

FIVE men have appeared in court after violence broke out in Exeter city centre following Exeter City's derby clash with Plymouth Argyle.

Nick Antonelli, 23, of Wardrew Road, Exeter, Andrew Napier, 44, of Western Road, Crediton, and Matthew McGarry, 32, of Alvington Street, Plymouth, all admitted using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, causing fear of unlawful violence.

All three were involved in a fight in Sidwell Street, at around 2pm on Saturday, April 30, in the aftermath of the league game between the bitter rivals at St James's Park.

Two more men, one from Exeter and one from Plymouth, denied charges relating to disorder at the match.

Prosecutor Karen Ball told Exeter Magistrates' Court that there was a heavy police presence in the city, with mounted officers and dogs.

She said violence broke out as crowds walked along Sidwell Street away from the ground shortly after Exeter had won the game.

The violence started after McGarry approached another man and exchanged words. He then punched the man with his left fist.

Mrs Ball said Antonelli then stepped in and punched or pushed McGarry as he backed away. McGarry fell to the ground. Antonelli then threatened another man who came to assist McGarry.

Other threats were made by men close to the incident before Napier walked past McGarry, looked around, and headbutted him.

McGarry then punched Napier to the floor and Antonelli punched McGarry to the back of the head.

All three men were arrested and the incident was captured on CCTV.

In police interview, Napier claimed he did not support either team and had not watched the game. He said his behaviour was stupid.

Antonelli told police that he was defending himself and struck out a "sneaky punch."

In interview, McGarry admitted punching a man but denied that it was football related.

Mrs Ball said the crown believed that the violence was directly related to the football and applied for a football banning order for all three men.

The court was told that McGarry had already been the subject of a six-year football banning order that was revoked in February this year by crown court Judge Darlow.

Mrs Ball said McGarry, a father of three, had told the judge that he wanted to take his daughters to football matches and stated that he was not applying for the ban to be lifted so that he could attend the derby.

She said: "He was certainly in the vicinity of the game."

Mrs Ball said McGarry had been warned by Judge Darlow: "If you come before the magistrates or this court for any street-related violence your feet won't touch the ground."

Mitigating for McGarry, Caroline Salvatore said the victim had said something about McGarry's mother, and he had lost his temper and hit out.

She said it was when he was trying to leave that a complete stranger came up and headbutted him.

McGarry appeared in court using a crutch due to a bone injury in his ankle.

Mitigating for Napier, James Calderbank said he was on his way to a book shop and got mixed up in the crowd.

Mr Calderbank said on behalf of Antonelli, that he was looking at a community order.

Magistrates told Napier his was the most serious offence, as he had used his head as a weapon.

They adjourned all three cases for sentence before a district judge on June 24, so that reports can be compiled by the probation service and football banning applications can be heard. All three are on conditional bail with restrictions on attending football matches.

Magistrates warned the trio that they could face jail.

Joshua Westcott, 21, of Prescot Road, Exeter, also appeared and denied a charge of willfully obstructing a police sergeant, in connection with the football match.

The court heard that Westcott is currently on a football banning order that has three years to run.

The case was adjourned for a pre-trial review on May 31.

And Darren Mitchell, 36, of Grenville Road, Plymouth, appeared charged with a public order offence in Exeter, relating to the football match.

The case was adjourned until May 31, so that he could apply for legal aid. No plea was entered. He is on conditional bail.

Rapid Vienna - Austria Vienna - 22/05/2011

Source : Reuters + Bild.de

Austrian derby abandoned after pitch invasion

Rapid Vienna's derby at home to Austria Vienna was called off in the first half on Sunday when dozens of home fans invaded the pitch.

The two teams ran to their changing-rooms as the supporters, many of them shirtless, masked and heavily tattooed, swarmed on to the field in the 26th minute shortly after the visitors had taken a 2-0 lead.

Media reports also said that stones were thrown at the Austria Vienna team bus before the game, breaking windows but not causing any injuries.

Referee Thomas Einwaller abandoned the match at Rapid's 19,500-capacity Hanappi stadium after a half-hour wait, Rapid's website said (www.skrapid.at).

"It was a difficult decision as both teams and ourselves, the officials, wanted to continue," Einwaller told reporters. "But the authorities said they were unable to guarantee the security in the stadium."

"I'm very sorry for Austrian football."

The Austrian league will rule on the outcome and will almost certainly award the points to Austria Vienna.

"It's the darkest hour in my decades with Rapid," said club president Rudolf Edlinger. "I'm deeply upset, shocked and sad."

"I want to apologise, especially to the Austria players who were physically threatened."

The club's general manager Werner Kuhn said: "Everything we could think of was done to prevent this.

"It's inexplicable and unforgivable. There are countless video cameras in the stadium. There's a big chance we can identify most of these people. We will pursue them and sanction them."

The fixture is the biggest and oldest derby in the country and was being played for the 297th time.

Rapid are traditionally regarded as the working-class team and their fans look upon their rivals as a bourgeois club.

The incidents came on the penultimate day of the Austrian Bundesliga season which finishes Wednesday.
