Government promises tougher laws on violence at sports grounds
Three of the people arrested during disturbances at the Greek Cup Final on Saturday have been given suspended sentences.
The three men were given suspended terms of between three and six months and will have to appear at their local police station when AEK is playing.
The game between AEK and Atromitos, which ended 3-0 in favor of the Yellows was disrupted several times because of pitch invasion and crowd trouble.
The referee ended the game several minutes early when dozens of AEK fans had gathered around the pitch to celebrate. Some fought with Atromitos players after the final whistle.
Two of those arrested on Saturday night were found innocent and were released. Another five suspects asked for more time to prepare their defense.
Deputy Minister for Sports Giorgos Nikitiadis told Parliament on Monday that a new draft law to combat violence at sporting events would be presented to the Cabinet next week.

Slavia Prague match abandoned after fans storm pitch
Fans of Czech side Slavia Prague stormed the pitch during a national cup semi-final on Thursday to protest against the club leadership, forcing an early end to the match.
The fans were demanding an end to unclear ownership and financial dealings at the oldest Czech club, who have suffered heavy debts and are on the brink of losing their first division licence for next season.
Some 1,500 fans went onto the pitch before the start of the cup semi-final against Olomouc, demanding an explanation from management on how it would overcome the debts.
They allowed the game to go ahead after pleas from the players, but they stormed the pitch again after halftime, forcing officials to call off the game with the score at 1-1.
"We want the truth. Long live Slavia," the fans chanted.
New agency CTK reported some of the fans clashed with riot police, damaged equipment at Slavia's new Prague stadium and tried to attack club director Miroslav Platil.
The club could face a 3-0 walkover loss for the incident.
"We understand the fans to a certain extent, but the players are disappointed," Slavia spokesman Ondrej Zlamal said in a statement.
"They fought for a place in Europe (a spot in the Europa League), they have not seen pay for four months but still made it into the semi-finals. They believed they could win the cup but now they did not get the chance to get a better result than 0-3."
Slavia, who last won the league title in 2008 and 2009, have had a bleak season in the league and are in 10th place, with the cup being the only chance to book a spot in Europe next term.
Slavia said a potential investor had paid 30 percent of wages owed to players on Thursday to ease the situation at the club, established in 1892 and the most famous Czech side alongside cross-town rivals Sparta Prague.
Slavia, known for their traditional red and white jerseys and red star symbol, have won the Czech title 17 times.
The Czech Football Association has ruled not to give Slavia a first division licence for next season due to their debts. The club can still win back the licence if they find funding by the end of May.
Slavia have had an unclear financial and ownership structure for years, and the Czech press has been rife with speculation over which entrepreneurs were the ultimate owners.

Violence mars Polish Cup finale
Legia Warsaw fans clashed with police and damaged the stadium after their side won the Polish Cup on Tuesday.
Masked hooligans invaded the pitch following Legia's penalty shootout victory against Lech Poznan, smashing barriers, tearing off seats and assaulting photographers.
Police were forced to deploy water cannons and fire rubber bullets to control the situation.
The incident is embarrassing for the Polish Football Association with the country due to co-host the European Championships with Ukraine next year.
UEFA has already criticized Poland over hooliganism, following violence during their international friendly against Lithuania in March.
The Polish government has announced new legislation to tackle football violence similar to the laws implemented by Germany before the 2006 World Cup.

Fans barred from two league matches following rioting in Euro 2012 host Poland - 05/05/2011
Source : The Canadian Press
Fans will be barred from two upcoming league matches in Poland in a show of determination by the authorities to fight stadium rioting in the Euro 2012 host country. Warsaw province governor Jacek Kozlowski announced on Thursday that Legia Warsaw's home game against Korona Kielce on Friday will be played in an empty stadium. Poznan province governor Piotr Florek has barred fans from Lech Poznan vs. Gornik Zabrze on Saturday. Their decisions come two days after hooligans caused 40,000 zlotys ($13,000) in damage following Legia's win over Lech Poznan in a Polish Cup match at a stadium in Bydgoszcz. No arrests were made. The rioting has raised questions about security in the country ahead of Euro 2012, which Poland will co-host with Ukraine. In response, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called for stricter measures from city and football authorities to prevent such disturbances. "Measures used so far have proven themselves inefficient," Tusk told a news conference Thursday. "The modern stadiums we are building are not meant to witness Medieval-era kind of behaviour." Tusk called on prosecutors to take strong action against those breaking the law and warned of extended bans on stadiums with repeated cases of violence. Kozlowski said he was aware his decision hurt the true fans, but he could see no other way of enforcing proper behaviour. "This is our joint responsibility," Kozlowski told a news conference. "It is high time that the governor used his power. I have the courage to take such decision."

Poland : Football league protests Legia stadium fan ban - 06/05/2011
Source : Thenews.pl
Poland’s Ekstraklasa first division has expressed concern over the local government decision to ban fans from tonight’s league match between Legia Warszawa and Korona Kielce after rioting at the Polish Cup final on Tuesday.
“[The] decision [to hold tonight’s match behind closed doors] will bring disastrous consequences to the image of the league,” says a statement by the Ekstraklasa management board.
“It adopts the principle of collective responsibility for hooliganism that took place at a different stadium and in a competition not associated with with Ekstraklasa SA,” the statement continues.
The local government decision, taken in consultation with Warsaw police, was taken after Legia Warszawa fans were involved in rioting at the Polish Cup final, which the Warsaw club won after a penalty shootout against Lech Poznan. The stadium in Bydgoszcz was damaged and police had to use rubber bullets and water canon to break up the disturbance.
The incident was made all the more embarrassing for Polish football as representatives of the European governing body UEFA were sitting in the stands at the time, monitoring procedures ahead of the Euro 2012 championships to be co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine next year.
The Ekstraklasa management says that their competition was being punished for what is, fundamentally, a social problem.
“In our opinion, the only effective method of eliminating pathology from football stadiums, as took place after the Polish Cup final, is to quickly identify and severely punish persons who have committed crimes,” says the statement released yesterday after the decision to force the game tonight to be played in front of an empty stadium.
“This decision causes huge financial losses for clubs and will in no way contribute to the elimination of violence and vandalism at football stadiums in Poland,” concludes the statement.

Arrests as Frankfurt fans riot
RIOT police used pepper spray and batons to drive back 150 Eintracht Frankfurt fans who invaded the pitch. The fans rioted after a 2-0 home defeat by Cologne, which threatens to relegate their team. After Cologne's Germany striker Lukas Podolski netted a 93rd-minute penalty to seal his team's and drop Frankfurt to second-bottom, angry home fans poured onto the pitch at the final whistle. Frankfurt players had to flee into the changing rooms and were protected by hundreds of riot police, who beat back a group of charging fans and made several arrests. "The behaviour of the fans is just terrible," admitted Frankfurt chairman Wilhelm Bender. This is the second Saturday in succession that Frankfurt fans have allowed their emotions to boil over. A group of 200 fans stoned the team's bus after they were beaten 3-0 at Mainz last weekend and the club cancelled training on police advice early last week before resuming their preparations in secrecy.

2 basketball fans shot in clashes in Greece - 07/05/2011
Source : USAtoday.com
Police say two Panathinaikos basketball fans have been wounded after being shot during a clash with supporters of fierce rival Olympiakos.
A hospital spokesman in Corinth says one fan had minor wounds and has been discharged while the other supporter has extensive damage to a leg and was transferred to an Athens hospital. Police say both men, who are in their late 20s, were hit when an Olympiakos supporter armed with an AK-47 assault rifle took aim at seven people after the rival groups of fans had arranged to meet at midnight in a deserted spot outside Corinth to fight. The clashes had initially begun late Friday after Panathinaikos defeated Montepaschi Siena in Spain to reach the Euroleague final.

Police called to football match
Police were called to a football match involving a Dewsbury team on Friday.
Allegations of racism and violence emerged after the tie between Park Football Club of Earlsheaton, Dewsbury, and Fairbank United from Bradford.
The teams were playing in the final of the Wilf Ward Memorial Cup, which was hosted in Cleckheaton by Liversedge Football Club.
Match officials claimed that fans of both teams shouted racist chants throughout the match, which kicked off at 7pm on Friday.
In the second half of extra time, two players from each team were sent off after a scuffle broke out.
When the final whistle was blown, meaning a 4-3 victory for Park FC, fans invaded the pitch from the sidelines.
Dean Rigby, Park FC team manager, said that punches were thrown before the police were called.
Mr Rigby was in goal for the match, while his son, Aaron Walton, played outfield. Mr Rigby said the scenes were ‘frightening’, and described the behaviour as ‘pathetic’.
He said he would take Park FC out of the Spen Valley League if they were in the same division as Fairbank again next season.
Fairbank secretary Akif Waseem said that his club would wait for the outcome of an investigation by the West Riding County FA before making a comment on the incident.
Spen Valley league secretary, Mavis Ward, who was at the match, said: “It was alright during the match — there were one or two incidents. It was only the second half of extra time.
“Both teams were equally to blame. I don’t think there were much to pick between them.
“Nothing happened until the second half of extra time, and then all hell broke loose.”
Mrs Ward said that spectators ran on the pitch and intimidated players, but did not see any punches being thrown. She said: “It doesn’t do the Spen Valley League any good.”
John Riordan, West Riding’s governance manager, said the county FA could not comment until it had seen the match referee’s report.
A police spokeswoman said that officers were called to the scene, but that no crimes had been reported.

Club Africain Hilal game abandoned after pitch invasion
Violence forced the abandonment of the African Champions League game between Club Africain of Tunisia and Sudan's Al Hilal at the Rades Stadium near Tunis. Club Africain were just a few minutes away from going out of the competition when fans invaded the pitch. There was further violence in the stands and the Sudanese visitors were forced to run for shelter. The match was tied at 1-1 but Hilal's 1-0 win from the first leg gave them a 2-1 aggregate lead. Trouble flared a few minutes before the end of the match and there are unconfirmed reports that the match officials were attacked. League matches in Tunisia are being played without fans but an exception had been made for continental games. It is not known what the Confederation of African Football's (Caf) response will be but it is likely that Hilal will go through and that Club Africain will be punished. A previous Champions League game featuring the Tunisian side against Egyptian team Zamalek was marred by violence and Club Africain were fined by CAF. The second leg of that tie was abandoned after fans invaded the pitch in Cairo, prompting further action by CAF.

Police identify Polish Cup final hooligans - 09/05/2011
Source : Thenews.pl
Police say they have identified the main culprits involved in the hooliganism at the Polish Cup final between Legia Warszawa and Lech Poznan last week and arrests will follow “in a few days”.
Police spokeswoman Monika Chlebicz said that officers from Warsaw, Poznan, Bydgoszcz, Szczecin and Sosnowiec are involved in the operation to track down the hooligans and their identities have been ascertained from TV coverage, CCTV footage as well as intelligence work.
The individuals will probably be charged with bringing alcohol and flares into the ground in Bydgoszcz and for destruction of property.
Over one million zloty (350,000 euros) in damages were incurred by the football stadium as fans rioted towards the end of the Polish Cup final which Legia won on penalties. Police used tear gas to break up the disturbances as some fans wrecked seating in the stadium.
UEFA official were at the match, as part of the preparations for the Euro 2012 football finals which will be held in Poland and Ukraine next summer.
The Polish FA (PZPN) has banned fans attending two matches by Legia and Lech Poznan as punishment.

Wrexham FC fans blasted after play-off defeat vandalism
FOOTBALL hooligans went on the rampage after Wrexham FC’s disappointing defeat on Thursday night.
A number of home fans caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to The Racecourse ground after Wrexham were beaten 3-0 by Luton Town in the first leg of the semi-final play-offs.
Fans viciously kicked at the seats in the Mold Road end of the stadium, damaging about 50 in total at a cost of £40 each.
The vandalism continued after the match, which was attended by more than 7,000 spectators, when the fans went on the rampage down Maesgwyn Road, opposite the stadium, smashing wing mirrors off cars.
Police received several calls from worried residents who looked on in horror as scores of fans marched down their street leaving a trail of destruction.
Resident Mark Morris, 20, a student at Glyndwr University, said hundreds of fans were shouting and causing trouble in the street.
“One of my friends had her wing mirror ripped off,” he said.
“We normally have problems with parking at the games, but nothing like this because people don’t really come down here after the games so it’s come as a bit of a shock.”
Another resident Anthony Bozzola, 20, who went to the match said trouble was brewing between the two sets of fans during the game.
He said: “They were all trying to push their way onto the pitch to get to each other. It was all going to kick off whatever the score.”
Wrexham FC secretary Geraint Parry said: “We are very disappointed by the behaviour of a number of fans at the game. They caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to the seating and we have been speaking to police about the vandalism caused to cars.
“These people purport to be Wrexham supporters, but all they have done is cost us money and with the financial situation at the moment this is just what we don’t need. The police and the stewards did a very good job and we can only apologise for what happened on what should have been a good occasion.”
Brynyffynnon ward councillor Phil Wynn has also blasted the yobs.
He said: “It’s totally unacceptable. This puts a bad light on the club. I don’t believe these people are true fans, they are just people turning up for a big game looking for trouble.
“Hopefully police have video evidence of the crowd and arrests will be made.”
Police said they had reports of three cars being vandalised in Maesgwyn Road. Officers were also called to reports of trouble at Wetherspoons in the town, but no arrests were made.
Two Luton fans were slapped with fixed penalty notices of £80 for public order offences. One is reported to have exposed himself to the crowd.
A Wrexham fan was also ejected from the ground for anti-social behaviour.
Wrexham town district inspector Alex Goss has condemned the acts of “mindless violence”.
He said: “Those responsible were in the minority, a small group of home supporters. Most of the fans, home and away, were very well-behaved.
“Anyone with information regarding the acts of criminal damage should contact us as soon as possible.”
Wrexham fans have also hit out at their fellow supporters’ behaviour on fans forum Redpassion.
Smiffysarmy posted: “Name and shame them. We don’t need people like that associated with the club at all.”
